“Channel Orange” was released in 2012 by the transcendent Frank Ocean, an artist dubbed a cultural icon for blurring the boundaries of R&B, soul, experimental, electro and rock, winning him two Grammy's, a GLAAD media award and a spot on Time Magazine's list of 100 most influential people. His work has extended beyond music into fashion and photography, and “Channel Orange” remains such an influential force in music that some have called it R&B's “Ziggy Stardust” moment for moving the genre in a new and forever changed direction. Our guest, Lady Midnight, is a performer, singer, musician and dancer, whose art is described as emotional, soothing, and prophetic. Her 2019 album “Death Before Mourning” captured a personal feeling of grief and loss that many communities shared just a year later. She was named by Minnesota Public Radio as an artist to watch in 2016, and best Twin Cities vocalist by City Pages in 2017. She has recorded with Bon Iver and Brother Ali, and shared the stage with Common and Moby, among countless others.

Lady Midnight is known as a multidisciplinary artist who uses dance, music and other arts expressions to share her own story as well as working with kids to encourage them to use their creative energies to respond to the world around them. Aaron Mader has made quite a name for himself in the music industry. That name just happens to be "Lazerbeak." Using the moniker, the co-founder and CEO of Doomtree has released an abundance of his own music, produced songs with the likes of Lizzo, P.O.S, Mac Lethal and Dessa and delved into the world of artist management. Long before Mader was a Midwest music mainstay and one of the driving forces of an accomplished creative collective, he was an inexperienced teen in the Minneapolis suburbs who was struggling to get shows for his first band. That band — The Plastic Constellations — wound up lasting 13 years, being signed to French Kiss Records, touring and selling out spacious venues in Minneapolis before he could even legally drink. Along the way, Mader dabbled in beat-making and his Lazerbeak alias was born. The rest is history. Recently, Mader spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas and told him about his impressive indie rock past, the origin and unexpected explosion of Doomtree, and how he stays both active and creatively fulfilled making music in his solo project, Shredders and the brand new Night Stone, and as part of a forthcoming band with William Elliott Whitmore and members of Ten Grand. Over the course of the lengthy and open discussion, Mader also talked about ways the COVID-19 crisis is currently impacting Doomtree and the artists he manages, accidentally sharing a stage name with an obscure Transformers character, his inspiring "little money in lots of places" approach and how Lizzo gave him a six-pack of Mike's Hard Lemonade to make beats for what would eventually become her Lizzobangers album. Leonard Cohen died last week, so I saw fit to have a tribute to him on today's show. Thanks to all those who phoned in. So many songs I had to omit: "The Partisan," "Lady Midnight," I'm Your Man," Famous Blue Raincoat," "Waiting For the Miracle," "Blessed is the Memory" and many more. That catalogue runs deep. Also, while I love Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah," he really set the conditions for the awful glut of covers of that song.Co-sign Luke's sentiment in the ep. Included is a snippet from David Remnick's interview and a clip from the NFB's 1965 film "Ladies and Gentlemen... Mr Leonard Cohen." I highly recommend seeking out both the film (it's on YouTube) and Remnick's profile in the Oct 17th, 2016 issue of the New Yorker.

i have finished reading cassandra clare’s lady midnight and i have a lot of feelings about it! particularly about julian, emma, and how the clave needs to FREAKING DIE. and then be fed to flesh-eating goldfish, just for kicks. ;)
