In this series, we'll dive into the life of Elisha — a man who lived with bold faith, relentless obedience, and a willingness to risk everything for God's calling. Elisha didn't hold back, and neither should we. No half-hearted prayers. No arrows left in the quiver. Let's learn to live and lead like Elisha: fully spent, completely surrendered, and all-in for God's purposes.

The final sermon in our series "The Last Arrow." Today's Starting Question: What does it look like to stand my ground? 2 Samuel 23:11-12, the story of Shammah is a story of standing one's ground. What does it look like to stand my ground? 1. I will do what is right even when the odds are stacked against me. 2. I live for the audience of One rather than for the audience of many.

Pastor Steve Gill teaches part five in our series "The Last Arrow." Today's key idea: What God wants to do through you is often more important than what God wants to do for you. Today's key text comes from 2 Kings 7. It's a story about four lepers who find themselves in a dire, hopeless, and urgent situation. What can I learn from this text? 1. Sometimes God's “for you” is “for you.” 2. Many times God's “for you” is more about his “through you.” 3. What you have been through is often how God works through you.

Today's Key Ideas: -We were not created to do life alone. -If we want people to be there for us, we have to be there for people. The Scripture Backdrop for today's sermon is The Story of Jonathan and David found in 1 Samuel chapters 14–23. In this story, we see that David and Jonathan were soul friends. 1 Samuel 18:1 (ESV) says, “As soon as David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.” Reflection and Application Who is with you? In the third installment of our sermon series "The Last Arrow," Pastor Steve Gill taught on the key idea of Refusing To Be Left Behind. In 2 Kings 2:1-14 we see how Elisha will not leave Elijah's side, despite being given permission to do so. As a result, he asks Elijah for a double portion of the Spirit that has been on Elijah, and it's granted to him. How do we avoid being left behind? In a word: Faithfulness. Today's application: 1. Where am I being faithful? 2. Where do I need to be more faithful?

In the first of Commonway's series "The Last Arrow," Pastor Steve Gill set the stage for what we will be talking about over the next several weeks. We are challenged by the story of Israel's King Jehoash from 2 Kings 13. King Jehoash was described as hesitant, half-hearted, and not "hungry" enough. When the Prophet Elisha instructed him to strike his arrows, he only did so three times. We are challenged to think about if we are the type of people who will strike our arrows a few times and then quit, or will we keep striking and striking until no arrows are left? The key idea for this message is that God has given us victory in Christ and calls us to walk with a faith that never quits. The application of this message is for each of us to think "What is one thing in life that have quit consistently? And what is my first step to re-engage where I quit?

Imagine leaving the comfort of a steady job with no safety net - that's exactly what I did. It's a journey filled with uncertainty and risk, but also, immense potential. I share insights from my own voyage into entrepreneurship and how "The Last Arrow" by Erwin McManus opened my eyes to the power of 'burning the boats'. This means cutting off bad habits, getting rid of toxic relationships, and making sacrifices - leaving no room for retreat. I use compelling stories from the book such as the military commander who ordered his men to burn their boats and the biblical tale of Elisha, drawing parallels with my own journey. But stepping into the unknown doesn't mean going in alone. Reflecting on my journey, it's the people that have made all the difference. From the pages of 'The Last Arrow', I bring forth an African proverb "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together". I highlight the crucial role a supportive network plays on your voyage to success. So, are you ready to burn your boats and bring people together to achieve your dreams? Join me as we learn to take control, make sacrifices and work together to reach our goals. Have you set your past on fire? In this new message pulled from 1 Kings 19, Pastor Erwin McManus challenges us to move toward the life God has designed for us. In 1 Kings 19, Elisha's life is interrupted by Eljiah as he is called to step into a new life away from the comfort of his family and home. As Elisha was plowing his field and living in the comfort of his success, he left everything behind to serve king Elijah. Pastor Erwin reminds us that often our past becomes our anchor when God wants it to become an altar. And though many of us feel as though our past failures are most difficult to move past, we're reminded that it is more difficult to leave success behind when God is calling us forward toward a life of risk . We cannot step into the future God has for us unless we are willing to light a match to it and let God build a new future from the ashes.  As we move with God, we are challenged to give up our plan B and move toward a life that is beyond our imagination.  Are you ready to let go of the past and move into the power of the future God has for you?  This message is inspired by The Last Arrow, Erwin Raphael McManus' book that calls us to save nothing for the next life.

In this critical moment, Joshua had to step into leadership and move past the point of no return -- past the victories of Moses and into his own land of promise. Often, we believe that people's success is based only on their gifts or talents. But in this message, we are encouraged by Joshua's story that our impact is based on our courage to walk into the territory God has promised us. In this week's episode, we find ourselves at the prequel of The Last Arrow with I'm Not Finished Yet Some of us have our deepest regrets because there were great things started in us that were left unfinished by us. And do you wonder how much is inside of you that is not yet finished? We like using fatalistic deterministic language, not sometimes just to defend ourselves from failure, but actually to protect ourselves from success. We act like the future is already concrete, completely set, and all you're doing is robotically moving into the future God has already designed. God is so much more creative than creating a fatalistic future, but sometimes what we do is we actually protect ourselves. There are opportunities right in front of you that you don't even realize are ripe. There are certain things in your life you just need to give yourself to and believe that your resolve, your discipline, your pain, your sacrifice, your suffering, your wounds are the material that God needs to use to accomplish something that will never happen apart from you.

Do you want to become the best version of yourself? To live the life you want, you have to brave through discomfort and take intentional action. You can change the trajectory of your future just by becoming 1% better than yesterday. In this episode, I will dive into the lessons and takeaways from the book The Last Arrow. I will also discuss choosing to live fully, finding clarity, and what it takes to be an elite. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Live fully and intentionally. Change your past and future. Know how to become an elite. Become 1% better than yesterday. Live the life you want. Episode Highlights: [01:36] The 7 Categories of Setting Goals and Living Intentionally Are you where you want to be spiritually, physically, and according to your personal points of interest? How about in your key relationships, business, job, and finances? [03:40] Choosing to Live Fully You become a source of life for others when you choose to live fully into your God-given purpose and ultimate fulfilled life. Consequently, choosing to stay where you are could leave other people stranded. You can't be somebody's top five if you don't take action. [07:58] Changing the Future I often think about the future as months or years from now. But even the next 8 hours is the future. If you want to change your past, change what you do in the next 8 hours.  [09:22] Becoming an Elite Elites commit to taking action towards being the best version of themselves. Surround yourself with the right people, have the right conversations, and design the right environment. [11:14] Becoming 1% Better than Yesterday Change what you do over the next 8 hours. Do something that allows you to wake up tomorrow, knowing you did something to get 1% better. Then, make a habit of it. From there, you'll become elite and live the life you're seeking to live. Notable quotes from the Episode:  [03:55] “When you choose to live fully, then you become a source of life for others.” [06:24] “If you don't get clear on everything that could be, for your life, or you get clear but you don't take action, then you're leaving the people who you would be part of their five—you're leaving them stranded.” [08:48] "If you want to change your past, change what you do in the next 8 hours because come tomorrow, today will be your past. So if you want to change your past, change your future."  Resources Mentioned: https://www.amazon.com/Last-Arrow-Save-Nothing-Next/dp/1601429533 (The Last Arrow) by Erwin Raphael McManus https://www.businessinsider.com/jim-rohn-youre-the-average-of-the-five-people-you-spend-the-most-time-with-2012-7 (Jim Rohn: You're the Average of the Five People You Spend the Most Time With) Sign up to my https://thementee.com/ (email list)!

Erwin Raphael McManus offers a thought-provoking, motivating treatise in The Last Arrow, published in 2017.  In this episode, Beth discusses some of McManus' themes, such as what is represented by arrows, why we tend to hold back from pursuing our most important goals, how God uses ordinary people to accomplish his purposes, the importance of community, how to take action, how to guard against the temptation to quit, and why it's not just acceptable, but crucial to go BIG, where life and God are concerned. BE READY WHEN YOU GET THEREAt age 29 I had been the pastor of a tiny congregation in South Dallas, TX for six years. A huge faith-based event took place in Reunion Arena every year and I typically volunteered there as, essentially, an usher. Right before the event was scheduled to start, the executive director of the conference came to me and told me the main speaker couldn't make it and that I would take his place. It took a lot of convincing from him to make me believe he wanted me to step onstage in front of 20,000 people in less than an hour. That night I gave every ounce of passion within me, but it wasn't because I was in front of thousands. It was the same intensity I gave every week to the 20 or 200 people who walked through the doors of my church. Afterward, the director told me that he had seen me preach in Spanish at my church without my knowledge – he didn't know what I was saying, but he knew what was happening in the room and trusted me with a large moment because of that small one.Remember that Jesus laid out this principle for us: it is the person who is faithful in the small things who will be entrusted with bigger things. So many of us are trying to get “there,” wherever “there” might be, but when we get there, we're not ready for it. The great tragedy would be to live your life waiting for that moment to come instead of living your life preparing for when that moment comes. What I have seen over a lifetime is that, from our perception, we wonder why God hasn't given us the opportunities we long for, and from His perception, He wonders why we chose to be unprepared for the opportunities He placed right in front of us. You cannot know every challenge you will face, but you can know who you are when you face that challenge! Are there areas in your life where you feel God has called you to prepare yourself for something larger? How has God rewarded your stewardship of small things with the trust of larger ones?

KNOW WHAT YOU WANTThere is a story in the life of Jesus that has always struck me as odd. Jesus was leaving Jericho and a large crowd began to follow him. In the midst of the commotion two blind men were sitting by the road. “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” they cried out. The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet but they raised their voices even louder. “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. The men responded, “Lord, we want our sight.”Usually when we read a story like this we are primarily struck by the outcome - it's no small thing that at the end of that story Jesus gave the two blind men their sight. So the question Jesus asked often goes over looked. When Jesus asks them “What do you want me to do for you?” he wasn't asking because he didn't know, but because he needed them to declare what they wanted God to do on their behalf. The Psalms tell us that we are to delight ourselves in the Lord and he will give us the desires of our heart. This means we need to know our hearts, we need to know our desires, and we must allow those desires to be informed and then formed by our love and worship of God.If you don't know what you want, then God trying to give you what he wants is a wasted effort. You have to want what God wants in order to receive what God wants to give you. There are times in life when it is not within the scope of God's intention for our life to give us certain things we ask for. But wouldn't you rather err by asking for too much than too little? What do you want from God? Is that a question you typically ask yourself? Is there anything you want that you're afraid to ask for?

DON'T STOP UNTIL YOU ARE FINISHEDThe concept of The Last Arrow came to me when I was reflecting on a story from the life of the prophet Elisha in the Hebrew Scriptures. In this story, Jehoash is the king of Israel in the midst of a massive war, and he seeks the wisdom and counsel of Elisha in how to win against the armies of Judah.Elisha tells Jehoash to ‘get a bow and some arrows' and then to ‘take the bow in [his] hands.' After commanding Jehoash to shoot one of the arrows out of the east-facing window, he declares that Jehoash will have victory in battle. But then Elisha asks him to take the remaining arrows and ‘strike the ground.'Jehoash strikes the ground three times before he stops and, quite unexpectedly, Elisha grows angry with him. ‘You should have struck the ground five or six times; then you would have defeated Aram and completely destroyed it. But now you will defeat it only three times.' And that is where the story ends.Jehoash began with the promise of a complete victory and afterward found himself the recipient of much less. And it all centers around one decision: he struck the ground three times and then stopped. To put it another way, he quit. For Elisha, Jehoash striking the arrow was connected to his ability to receive the full measure of God's intention for him, and when he quit the victory was lost.It makes me wonder how many times in my own life I thought I failed, but actually the only thing that happened was that I quit. When you come to the end of your life, will you be able to say, “I gave everything I had,” or will you have a hollow feeling inside of your soul that you quit too soon, that you expected too little, that you did not strike the last arrow? Make the commitment to not stop before you are finished, because you are truly stopping before God is finished. Are there areas in your life where you too easily give up? Can you identify patterns in your past where you thought you failed when you actually quit? What makes you want to be a person who lives their life fully alive and dies with their quiver empty?

SET YOUR PAST ON FIREIn 1977 my family's home erupted in an electrical fire that consumed everything inside. While my mother lamented the loss of my brother's trophies and promised him they could be fixed, I remember that my brother seemed strangely unmoved. The insight he left me with that day was that if those trophies are the highlights of our life, then our lives were not worth living, going forward. Why waste time and effort to reclaim the past when it would be much better for us to focus on creating the future? There are things and even people that you will have to leave behind if you are going to keep moving forward - anyone and anything that would keep you trapped in the past and would rob from you the future God has for you. Jesus clearly imparted to all of His disciples: You cannot follow me into the future if you are holding on to your past.Your past will be your future until you have the courage to create a new one. Take every memory that continues to wound you, take all of the pain, all of the regret, take all of the bitterness and disappointment, take all the moments of betrayal and every failure out of your heart and put them in the fire.Keep in mind that this is not an invitation for destructive behavior; don't burn relational bridges or operate under a scorched-earth strategy. Try to make sure you do the right thing in the right way; appreciate the past, but live in the present and for the future. The journey into our best future always passes through the furnace. The fire both forges us to who we must become and frees us to live the life for which we were created. What has a negative hold on your life that you need to leave in your past to create your future? Identify three strongholds over your decisions, behaviors, and relationships that you need to ‘burn' to move forward into the life Jesus is calling you to live.

When he had taken it, Elisha put his hands on the king's hands.17 “Open the east window,” he said, and he opened it. “Shoot!” Elisha said, and he shot. “The Lord's arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Aram!” Elisha declared. “You will completely destroy the Arameans at Aphek.”18 Then he said, “Take the arrows,” and the king took them. Elisha told him, “Strike the ground.” He struck it three times and stopped. 19 The man of God was angry with him and said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times; then you would have defeated Aram and completely destroyed it. New Bedford, Massachusetts is known for its profitable fishing port. It even draws visitors by celebrating Moby Dick, a novel inspired by whalers there. But facing a crackdown on fishing by regulators, the city is starting to look at another source of revenue – offshore wind. We take a look inside the hidden, often lucrative world of Vermont sheriffs, and mourn (or celebrate??) the end of L.L. Bean's lifetime return policy. Plus: responding to racism on campus through art, and Palestinian storytellers in Boston. A man looks at a harpoon display at the New Bedford Whaling Museum (John Bender/RIPR) Keeping Tabs on the Sheriff When Attorney General Jeff Sessions at a speech to the National Sheriffs Association said “The office of sheriff is a critical part of the Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement,” he prompted many shocked observers to wonder where that leaves people of color within that heritage. It's also thrown a pretty harsh spotlight on the job of sheriff. But do you even know who your sheriff is? In 2006, an anonymous whistleblower tipped the Vermont state auditor off to financial misdeeds in the Windham County Sheriff’s Department, which was led by Sheila Prue. If you live in Connecticut, that’s a trick question! County government is nonexistent in the Nutmeg State — that’s why there are no sheriffs — but it’s not very strong in other New England states either. While Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts have elected sheriffs, their elections don’t get much attention. That lead a listener to the Vermont Public Radio podcast Brave Little State to ask: if voters aren't holding these elected officials accountable, then who is? VPR investigative reporter Emily Corwin dug in and joins us to share some surprising tales of sheriffs going bad — and virtually getting away with it. So, did that dog bed you purchased from LL Bean five years ago get chewed by its occupant? Up until last week, you could just take it back and get a replacement for no charge. But the iconic Maine company is changing its famous unconditional return policy — one that has been a part of the brand since it started more than a century ago. The change comes as a response to the growing number of customers who have been taking advantage of the policy. Maine Public Radio’s Patty Wight reports. “The Last Arrow,” by Thomas Moran, is one of the works slated for sale by the Berkshire Museum. Image courtesy of Sotheby’s And there are plenty of complaints about a deal the Massachusetts attorney general struck with Berkshire Museum. The deal allows, with some conditions, the museum to sell up to 40 works of art — including two Norman Rockwell paintings — to fund renovations and boost its endowment. A group of the museum’s members said it will press forward in a lawsuit attempting to block the sale. New England Public Radio’s Adam Frenier has more. A Maritime Past and Future in New Bedford Boats docked at the Port of New Bedford. (Lynn Arditi/RIPR) New Bedford, Massachusetts was on the front page of the New York Times this week. The headline: “A Famed Fishing Port Shudders as Its Codfather Goes to Jail.” Back in October, fishing magnate Carlos Rafael, also known as “the Codfather,” was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for mislabeling his catch and money-laundering. But with Rafael behind bars, the men who worked for him are barred from catching groundfish with his boats. Some of Rafael's boats and permits have even been seized by regulators. And as the Times reports, the ripple effects can be felt across the usually bustling port of New Bedford, which has gone eerily quiet. Visitors listen to Moby Dick read aloud, during the annual Moby Dick Marathon at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. (John Bender/RIPR) Yet while the fishing sector sits in limbo, another industry is just gearing up off Massachusetts' South Shore — offshore wind. Right now, the Commonwealth is developing what could be the nation's first large-scale offshore wind project, and New Bedford wants to be a big part of it. Rhode Island Public Radio's environmental reporter Avory Brookins takes a look at that city's bet on offshore wind energy. In the mid 19th Century, New Bedford was one of the world’s whaling capitals. The whaling industry is long gone, but New Bedford is drawing in fans of the world most famous leviathan. RIPR’s John Bender has the story. The RIPR newsroom has been exploring New Bedford for their series “One Square Mile,” and there’s lot’s more at ripr.org. RIPR and the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth are holding a public forum on Wednesday, February 21 called “After the Codfather: The Future of New Bedford’s Fishing Industry.” Admission is free, registration required. (Jill Kaufman) NEPR An art professor recently spent four days painting a six-foot-tall portrait of Trayvon Martin, while spectators came and went. The performance took place at Westfield State University, near Springfield, Massachusetts, where last semester there were numerous reports of racist messages left around campus. New England Public Radio’s Jill Kaufman reports. Photo by Annie Sinsabaugh When we hear about Palestinians in the news, it's usually in the context of conflicts or negotiations with Israel. Nadia Abuelezam, a Palestinian-American living in the Boston area, wants to change that. In 2015, she launched an event series called Palestinians, Live! featuring true stories told on stage. The stories are later released on Palestinians Podcast, which Nadia also created.
