Beyond the Sessions is answering YOUR parenting questions! In this episode, Dr. Rebecca Hershberg and I talk about...   - Dr. Sarah and Dr. Rebecca debate whether mom-guilt is inherent to all mothers or a societally structured construct (Spoiler: Dr. Rebecca wins this battle!)   - The critical distinction between distress and guilt and why one can be a destructive grenade in parenting.   - Releasing guilt is a form of activism - we're explaining why.   - How to course correct once you've noticed you're parenting from a space of guilt.   - The question to ask yourself that can help guide your behaviors as a parent that come from a place of attunement and trust, rather than guilt or fear.   - Using a “values-driven” distinction to help you determine the root reasons you are making certain decisions, and how bringing this into your consciousness can be helpful.     ADDITIONAL PODCAST EPISODES YOU MAY LIKE:

This week I am talking to Randi Tangney, an Employment attorney in the USA. Randi talks about becoming a mum and role model to three incredible girls whilst also trying to resolve the physical and mental demands of breastfeeding, no sleep, pumping and fitting a baby into a trial schedule. Randi also shares the additional barriers women in the US face to having a family and a career when she describes how her healthcare cover was tied to her job, and so leaving her job to care for her child was never an option, especially not when her unborn child was diagnosed with Myelomeningocele, a severe form of spina bifida requiring in-utero surgery.  We also wonder whether one way to improve outcomes for working mums is to record the cost of parental leave as an investment in the company's balance sheet rather than as a cost to the P&L, and Randi recommends we all read The Fifth Trimester by Lauren Smith Brody.

Lauren Smith Brody is the founder of the Fifth Trimester movement, best-selling author, and former editor with Glamour Magazine. We discuss everything from pumping to politics. You don't want to miss this in-depth conversation.

freemom, conversations for modern mothers

It's no secret that corporate America kind of treats women like crap, with men earning roughly 16% more than us for doing the exact same jobs over the exact same time. If that doesn't sound like a lot, tell your friends that they'd have to work 42 more days a year to even the score. No thank you. What's even more shocking than the gender disparity in this country is what's known as the “motherhood penalty” which studies show accounts for 80% of the gender pay gap. So it's not just women who are being screwed, it's actually mothers. To make that perfectly clear, we are earning less and getting passed up for promotions more simply because we have children. There is some pretty scary research to support all of this. A Harvard study found that mothers were recommended an 8% lower starting salary than non-mothers which is more than 8% lower than the recommended starting salary for fathers. Oddly, the trend is reversed for dads when compared to childless men. According to a recent report by the World Economic Forum, it will take another 130 years to close the gender pay gap globally. Let's make this perfectly clear, we are talking about paying women, and disproportionately mothers, equal pay for equal work. That's it. So how can we fast-track that trajectory and start to build a foundation that will actually benefit our daughters in ways that we are unlikely to see in our lifetime? Let's find out. With me today is Lauren Smith Brody, founder of The Fifth Trimester an educational consulting platform that supports all working parents and caregivers to advance women's leadership and build gender equity in the workforce. Her book, The Fifth Trimester, is a must-read for parents looking to survive and thrive in the tumble dryer early days of balancing career and motherhood. From mental health and managing relationships to raising changemakers and advocating for support, freemom is a podcast dedicated to ensuring that every mom feels heard. “Going into any negotiation as a working parent…it's so important to remember that what you're asking for is not just for you in your personal life, but you're asking for essentially everyone,” explains Lauren Smith Brody, author of The Fifth Trimester. In today's episode of Problem Performers, Lauren discusses the role of accessible childcare and paid family leave in our overall economic recovery during the pandemic.  Lauren is passionate about supporting mothers as they return to work after giving birth. Her book and consultation firm are focused on revolutionizing workplace cultures to support new moms, who face enormous challenges in the form of insufficient paid family medical leave and lack of affordable childcare. Lauren explains that women rarely have access to the resources necessary to simultaneously parent and maintain their careers, and these benefits are especially elusive for hourly wage workers and BIPOC parents. She tells listeners that it is crucial for business leaders to talk openly about their own balance between work and family, even the hard parts, to help normalize it for their teams. Tune into this week's episode of Problem Performers for a candid (and hilarious) chat between Lauren Smith Brody and Rebecca Weaver about the challenges of being a postpartum professional, and the importance of making paid family medical leave the national standard. Learn about what you can do to advocate for paid leave and support new moms in the workplace – which ultimately benefits everyone, parents or not.   Quotes • “Some of the people who have made it to the top just do not feel comfortable being transparent about when they are doing things for their families, which is such an easy fix….Especially if they're in leadership, when they are visible about the things that they're doing to support their family life, that's doing their job well. Because they're actually helping retain people. They're helping people see that there's a path forward for them.” (13:41-14:10 | Lauren) • “We should all be in a ‘normal' here, nationally and I would say even globally, that supports the rights of parents and caregivers to earn a paycheck while also caring for their families.” (22:44-22:54 | Lauren) • “Going into any negotiation as a parent who is trying to find a way of working that will let them keep working, it's so important to remember that what you're asking for is not just for you in your personal life, but you're asking for essentially everyone. And so when say to you, ‘Well, I'd have to do it for everyone,' the answer to that is, ‘That's probably what's needed to make progress here and for us to stay competitive.'” (24:28-24:53 | Lauren) • “Eighty-two percent of the existing childcare spots available in our country before the pandemic are available now. Simultaneously 50% of America is in what is classified by the government as a childcare desert. Which means that you'd have to drive a certain number of miles or that childcare is so out of bounds expensive compared to what the average income is that it's inaccessible. And that is particularly true for people of color.” (25:56-26:32 | Lauren) • “It's important for managers and HR to really understand that if the childcare industry's recovery is going to be so much more delayed than every other industry, that those other industries don't just get to keep on recovering.” (27:44-27:58 | Lauren) • “I want HR and business owners and leadership to listen to this message: there will be no economic recovery without childcare support. Period. There just will not.” (29:02-29:16 | Rebecca) • “Until we have (federally mandated paid leave), what we have is a K shaped economic recovery. At the top leg of the K, people who had access are going to keep moving up. At the bottom leg of the K, the people who didn't have access are going to keep moving down. And those two end points of those two legs get further and further and further apart.” (37:19-37:36 | Lauren) • “Thirty-seven percent of people who are ‘voluntarily'…out of work right now, who could go back to work but are not…say that if they had access to paid family leave, they would come back into the workforce.” (39:30-39:50 | Lauren) • “Pay them better. Pay them a livable wage, so that they can pay for childcare or elder care to take care of the people they love. And if you can't pay them, then you don't have a viable business.” (40:43-40:55 | Lauren) • “You shouldn't have to fix the problem that you're in, but if you have one ounce of energy to do it, to speak up, to be a tiny bit more transparent than is comfortable for you, please do. Because there are a lot of people who don't have the ability to do that who are counting on you.” (44:22-44:36 | Lauren)   Links http://www.thefifthtrimester.com/  https://www.chamberofmothers.com/  Instagram: @thefifthtrimesteer  Twitter: @laurensbrody https://paidleaveforall.org/ Email your senator to push for paid leave with just a few clicks at https://paidleave.us/email-your-moc   Connect with a coach at https://www.hruprise.com/   Follow us on social media:  • Twitter: https://twitter.com/hruprise • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hruprise/ • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HRuprise/ • LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hruprise/

Author and workplace expert Lauren Smith Brody makes an unexpected argument about our lives as caregivers in a pandemic: we've been forced to rebuild the way we work and live in ground shaking ways—just as many of us did when we first became parents. At the same time, the pandemic has thrust many couples into throwback gender roles, and women are shouldering the brunt of childcare and housework. Lauren shares strategies from her bestselling book, The Fifth Trimester: The Working Mom's Guide to Style, Sanity, and Success After Baby. Kelly and Rachel explore the upside to work from home, and how the pandemic will change the way we work forever. After a successful 16-year career in magazine publishing, Lauren Smith Brody had a new calling, that of supporting working moms and generally working parents as they reconcile their professional and personal selves. Through her incredibly insightful best-selling book, The Fifth Trimester: The Working Mom’s Guide to Style, Sanity, and Big Success After Baby, she has launched The Fifth Trimester movement which emphasizes the support and understanding so necessary to ensure all working parents can succeed, both inside and outside the home. Lauren is a compassionate, articulate, funny and engaging champion of calling out the pitfalls of working parenthood, both in how we present ourselves in the workforce (or virtual workforce for some, these days) and how we support ourselves across the demands outside of the office. She brings tons of research, historical insights and pragmatic self-forgiving gems to help us all feel a bit better about our capabilities and a bit more honest about our shortcomings. We discuss “networking” in the age of remote work, the history of FMLA, the importance of involving your partner in the early days of childcare, as well as how to continue to succeed in your career by setting boundaries, managing expectations of yourself and striving for advancement, yes even if working remotely! I loved this conversation so much and hope you do too! You can learn more about her work at www.thefifthtrimester.com, or follow her on Instagram @thefifthtrimester.

If you thought there were only three trimesters, well, prepare to think again. While the newborn phase is often referred to as the fourth trimester, former New York-based Glamour editor Lauren Smith Brody took it one step further when she trademarked the term ‘the fifth trimester’. She was referring to the birth of the working mother – the time when new mothers return to work and undergo a radical transformation in so many ways. She’s written the book (literally) on this phase and it’s full of insights and advice. The Fifth Trimester is based on interviews with over 700 candidly speaking mothers in carried fields and expert advice, and answers to many of our burning questions. When will I go back? How should I manage that initial "I want to quit" attack? Flex-time or full-time? What's the best option for childcare? Is it possible to look like I slept for eight hours instead of three? And why is there never a convenient space to pump? In today’s conversation, host Georgie Abay talks to Lauren about all of the above and more. The enormous identity shift we experience when we become mothers The motherhood penalty Making peace with your child-care choices Returning to work and pumping Practical time management tips for working mothers To find out more about The Fifth Trimester, visit www.thefifthtrimester.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What if moms were granted the kind of parental leave they really needed to heal from childbirth, care for baby, and return to work? Lauren Smith Brody thinks it would completely change the lives of new parents—and everyone around them. Most parents have to go back to work months before they’re emotionally and physically ready, missing out on an important developmental phase. When Lauren had her first child, she realized that phase needed a name, and a movement—so she launched The Fifth Trimester to help parents and businesses transform workplace culture together. It shouldn’t be on women necessarily, and it shouldn’t be on moms necessarily, to have to make these big cultural corrections just because they’re the ones who need it in this moment. It's really on all of us.—Lauren Smith Brody, author and founder of The Fifth TrimesterWe talk about: Why openly talking about being a parent at work is so critical. “Coming back to work as a new mother was my first day on the job all over again in many, many ways...I didn't know how to do my job and be a mom at the same time. I felt like a newbie and I just decided to expose that all over the place as much as I could and make it ok.”How asking for what you need as a new parent can actually help everyone in your workplace. “Try to remember that this is not something that you are asking for for you, your family, in this moment. This is a plan for how you will get your job done. But also, any flexibility that you're able to win is really a win for everybody around you.”Why reckoning with our racist and capitalist past is the only way we can fundamentally change the system. “Racism so clearly impacts the access to support and even just obviously simple good health and the right to good health that American workers have. ...So very often you'll see that a company has gotten headlines for providing, you know, so-and-so is going to now have, you know, 12 paid weeks of family leave. Great. Who actually has access to that?” Plus: committing to becoming better advocates for people who have kids and digging a little deeper into the very real impact slavery’s history still has on our country today.LinksThe Fifth TrimesterLauren on InstagramThe 1619 Project, podcast episode 2: The Economy That Slavery BuiltThe 1619 Project, article: “In order to understand the brutality of American capitalism, you have to start on the plantation.”

There are no two ways about it--being a working mother is HARD. The most difficult part, though, can be those first few weeks back after having a baby. From changes in your hormones to your body to your schedule, everything is different... yet everyone expects women to go back to work and do the exact same things they did before they left. And while that's certainly possible, it's far from easy... at least without the right help and advice. That's where best-selling author Lauren Smith Brody comes in. Her book The Fifth Trimester is here to walk you through it step by practical step. I LOVED this conversation with Lauren because I've been there before--standing in the closet full of clothing that no longer fits wondering, "What the hell am I going to wear?" Or asking my boss, "Where can I pump at work?" Or even simple things like, How do you navigate your relationship after having a baby? This conversation was a true delight and I'm SO SO excited to share it with YOU! I can't overstate the insane amount of value and practical advice Lauren offers in this interview, and in her book. Here are some of the topics we cover: + Finding childcare: Should you use in-home care, or day care? + Getting your relationship back on track after baby--the sweet spot of time spent together that research shows improves your relationship + Beauty tips--her favorite products to look "done" in five minutes or less + How to stock your closet if your regular clothes still don't fit when you head back after leave (Hint: They probably won't.) + Managing yourself, and others, at work + And so much more! I promise you'll walk away from this with not only practical advice, but also knowing that you are NOT alone in this crazy new part of life. Today’s guest, Lauren Smith Brody is the Founder of The Fifth Trimester Movement and author of The Fifth Trimester: The Working Mom’s Guide to Style, Sanity, and Big Success After a Baby. She worked in the publicity industry for many years as an Editor for Glamour Magazine. During her first pregnancy, she found there to be a lack of resources for women who are transitioning back into their careers after having children. Determined to make a difference, she began to research ways to help companies better support women during their childbearing years. “The Fifth Trimester” was born - focusing on the transitional and critical stage of going back to work. Culturally, the United States falls short of what she considers to be the gold standard in maternity/paternity leave for a mother's emotional health and a baby’s physical needs. Her foundation works to promote deep cultural shifts in corporations on the financial viability of retaining women in the workplace after childbirth. As a woman who has experienced the transition twice and who consults with tech giants on the subject, she shares her tips for negotiating with employers, making self-care a priority and ways to create a cultural shift around motherhood. Lauren gets vulnerable with us as she shares the struggles and joys of her own journey, what she did different the second time around, and how women don’t have to just accept the “way things are” even when change seems impossible. #004 — Most new moms head back to work about 12 weeks after giving birth. The problem is that this is often several months before women are physically and emotionally ready. Scientific data and anecdotal evidence point to the six-month mark as the time when moms start to feel adept again (and for some women, it takes longer). The United States is one of the worst countries in the world (bottom three) offering zero paid maternity leave for new parents, often putting women, partners, and children in tricky to dire situations that don’t help with those early days of recovery and new life. But return to work we do, and Lauren Smith Brody, the founder of The Fifth Trimester movement and the former editor of Glamour magazine, dubbed those sleep-deprived transition months after the newborn days the “fifth trimester,” or the period when the working mom is born. So how do we navigate this ‘fifth trimester’ when we’re still in the newborn haze? By asking for the things we need. When Lauren Smith Brody returned to work after having her first son, she was very transparent about what she was going through. As the executive editor of a prestigious magazine, she wanted to mentor younger colleagues and change the perception of parenthood in the workplace. And after having her second son, Lauren was inspired to take her mentorship to the next level, making the shift from publishing to entrepreneurship. She wrote The Fifth Trimester, a book to help new and expectant mothers prepare for working motherhood, and now she’s moving to Phase B of the business, consulting with companies to upgrade policy and foster support of new parents in the workplace. Today, Lauren shares her advice for new moms returning to work and her vision of ideal workplace culture. I ask her about the impetus for writing The Fifth Trimester, the shift from publishing to entrepreneurship, and what she would say to aspiring entrepreneurs. Listen to learn what friends and family can do to support new moms, the concept of self-soothing for parents, and your most important job as a woman and a new mother: getting really good at asking for what you need—both at home and at the office.
