Throughout his fifteen-year moviemaking career, director and actor Benny Safdie has been drawn to naturalism and first-time performers. Fittingly, his recent collaboration with comedian Nathan Fielder (“Nathan for You”) was a perfect match. Benny joins us today to discuss their satirical black comedy series The Curse (9:10), the timely premise that inspired the show (13:35), and Safdie's history of capturing real-life personalities on film (15:58). Then, he describes his early connection to the 1979 movie Kramer v Kramer (19:00), a New York encounter with photographer Robert Frank (23:18), and how directors Robert Bresson and Frederick Wiseman opened his eyes to the possibilities of street casting (26:05). On the back-half, we dive into Benny's co-directing work alongside his brother, Josh Safdie (29:55), a heartbreaking scene from their debut feature Daddy Longlegs (34:30), and the projects that followed: Good Time (40:00), Lenny Cooke (42:45), and Uncut Gems (55:00). To close, Safdie talks about why he worked as a boom operator while directing (48:15), his recent pivot to acting (52:35), and his full circle moment of playing an astrophysicist in Oppenheimer (1:00:40). Meet Lenny Cooke, the high school basketball player who was once ranked higher than LeBron James. Today's interview covers the tragic career of Lenny Cooke, a high school basketball prospect who was ranked higher than LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Amare Stoudemire. I wanted to interview Lenny Cooke to find out what went wrong, what happened, why do a full documentary movie, and why NBA athletes go broke. Most importantly how can you go from the most hyped high school basketball player in the country to undrafted in the blink of an eye? How can you go from Lenny Cooke vs. LeBron James to what happened to Lenny Cooke? Lenny Cooke was supposed to be the next great NBA superstar, they even made a documentary about him. Sadly, two decades later, while his once close friends are making millions, winning MVP awards, and championship rings, Lenny has still never touched an NBA court. Please keep in mind that some basketball fans believe that Lenny Cooke was NEVER better than Lebron James, it's still a heated debate online to this day. I highly recommend watching the full Lenny Cooke documentary movie after this podcast for additional context. It wasn't the battles against Lebron and Melo that should've allure you, because it was much deeper than that! It was the way he conversed with them - calling Melo over to his section, putting his hand on top of his head, asking him how much he scored in his previous game as if he was his little brother. It was the private charter being sent to him from his guardian Debbie Bortner, after being in the club until 4am the night before an AAU game. And no one told him he was out of pocket - he was "Lenny Cooke" for God's sake! It wasn't who he played that convinced you he was the #1 ranked player in the nation, it was how he was treated - and how he treated others! However, when your ego is bigger than your game (..and boy did he have game!), the results are almost never in your favor. As far as friends, there are only a few who stuck around and remained loyal. But he still finds himself reaching out to everyone else without feeling the reciprocation. It was tough entering the draft and not hearing his name called. And it took years to overcome that pain - especially when your son's favorite player is Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony and he's begging you to sit down and watch the game with him. But as time went on, Lenny just had to accept it was over. Now starting his own non-profit organization and becoming the assistant coach at Atlantic City High, he sees life through a different lens. The documentary wasn't a false tale, but he didn't agree with how it ended. Which is why he is now pursuing his book that tells the full story about his life - especially being in a brutal car accident 2 years after the draft that almost costed him his life. When it's all said and done, Lenny just wants to be the blueprint for kids who want to pursue their dreams through the sport of basketball. And if he can help just one kid, he knows he's doing something right.

Ron Artest once said that his brother could have easily played in the NBA. His game was unique to say the least. Standing at a generous 6’4’’, the 265 pounder played the Center/Forward spot effectively with his high basketball IQ, explosive vertical leap, and 7’3’ wingspan. He was a self-taught basketball player who has earned the respect from hoopers and recieved the nickname "Da Guardian". We always heard about the stories, so we went ahead and tracked down Daniel Artest to learn from the man himself. Artest never played a minute of High School basketball, only AAU where he played with former number one player in the nation, Lenny Cooke. He went the Junior College route where he earned an opportunity to play overseas and even cracked an NBA Summer League team with the Sacramento Kings. Daniel could flat out HOOP and there are plenty of stories here about playing at the Rucker tournaments, working out with the Pacers, Malice at the Palace, NBA Summer League, Overseas, all the famous hip hop artists he grew up with, and MUCH more. We loved our time with Daniel and we can’t thank him enough for all of the knowledge, laughs, and time he shared with us.
