I have been reading liberal theology since my college days—i.e. theologies which deny many, most, or all of the major tenets of the traditional Christian Faith. The theologies are as many and as varied as their authors, but they all share a conviction that Jesus of Nazareth didn't say and do all the things which the New Testament recorded that He said and did, that the Gospels are not to be trusted as history, and that therefore the basic dogmas of the historical Church are wrong. The late Bishop John Spong (inset) is a modern and sterling example.

We continue our study showing how Paul fought for the true Gospel at the Jerusalem Council, taking an in-depth look at the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15, and harmonising it with Galatians 2. We also review other challenges to the Gospel of Grace that took place later in Church history, such as the Pelagian heresy and modern liberalism. Finally, we note how Paul was no respecter of persons. Although he honoured the original apostles as true apostles of Christ, he insisted that as men, they were capable of being wrong, and so were not above judgment and accountability.

As the United Methodist Church begins to separate and churches are discerning whether to disaffiliate or remain with the UMC, one of the things that institutional United Methodist leaders are saying is that there is no reason for churches to leave the UMC because the United Methodist doctrinal standards won't change. They are codified in the Articles of Religion and Confession of Faith and can't be altered because of the Restrictive Rule. And it's true that some who remain in the United Methodist Church will maintain and orthodox theological position, at least to a degree. But we also know that from the beginning the United Methodist Church began embracing liberal theology, particularly among most of the official seminaries along with many in the Council of Bishops and denominational agencies. Liberal theology may use some of the same words and concepts as outlined in our doctrinal standards but means something very different by them. In this episode, Bob interviews Dr. Roger Olson, who is emeritus professor of theology at George W. Truett Theological Seminary of Baylor University. His latest book is Against Liberal Theology: Putting the Brakes on Progressive Christianity. Dr. Olson argues that liberal Christianity isn't really Christianity at all, but a different religion altogether. He makes the case that discerning and challenging liberal theology, along with critiquing more fundamental forms of Christianity, are keys to making Christianity Christian again. Dr. Roger Olson joins the Seminary Unboxed podcast to discuss his new book, "Against Liberal Theology."
“In today's culture, it's not popular to be against something unless it's blatantly immoral or illegal,” writes Roger Olson. However, he adds: “If Christianity is to mean something, it has to have some shape, if not boundaries” (emphasis in original). The thesis of his new book, Against Liberal Theology, is that “liberal Christianity cuts the cord of continuity between itself and biblical, historical, classical, orthodox Christianity so thoroughly that it ought to call itself something other than Christian.” In this episode of the Influence Podcast, I'm talking to Olson about that thesis — what liberal theology is, why it's not authentically Christian, and why progressive Christians especially need to know these things. I'm George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. Roger Olson is emeritus professor of theology at George W. Truett Theological Seminary of Baylor University, and author of Against Liberal Theology: Putting the Brakes on Progressive Christianity, published by Zondervan Reflective. ----- This episode of the Influence Podcast is brought to you by My Healthy Church, distributors of Bible Engagement Project. Voltaire, has been credited with saying, “If God created us in his own image, we have more than reciprocated.” Since the Garden of Eden mankind has sought to eliminate God or replace Him. Most recent examples like Cultural Christianity, Christian Nationalism, and Evangelical Deconstructionism are simply efforts to strip away the truth of God's nature and replace it with the tenuous and inadequate abilities of man. Join me as I demonstrate that there is "nothing new under the sun" when it comes to human efforts to deny the one true God and his efforts to reconcile us to him through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. No matter how far you have run from God you are never more than one step from His open arms. That single step is the next step in the effort to change the world. Liberal theology is any doctrine or hermeneutics that seeks to redefine or modify traditional doctrines and practices of Christianity, especially those espoused by the earliest believers and the Early Church. The spirit of liberal theology is Gen 3:1 where the serpent said to the woman, “Has God indeed said …?” The heart of it is unbelief and an outright rejection of sound scriptural truths.Liberal theology has opened the door for many Christians, even the “faithful” ones, to question or reject the most basic Christian doctrines. It is dangerous, and will shipwreck our faith. As biblical Christians, we must be vigilant and watchful, and not allow liberal theology to make inroads into our lives, churches, and cell groups.

Dr. Daniel Pedersen joins us for a discussion on the 19th century German Reformed theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher. Schleiermacher is often called the 'Father of Modern Theology' or the 'Father of Liberal Theology'. Daniel explains what that term means and how he believes that term can mislead. Daniel takes a position that Schleiermacher is often misread and misinterpreted, and he sees Schleiermacher as more in line with the Great Tradition (and an important interlocutor in the Reformed Tradition). Daniel and Andrew also discuss some of the basic ideas of Schleiermacher as laid forth in his chief theological works On Religion: Speeches to Its Cultured Despisers and The Christian Faith. Daniel is a Research Fellow at the the University of Aberdeen. His interests run the gamut of modern theology and Protestant theology, from the Reformers to the 19th century and beyond. He earned his Ph.D. at Princeton where he studied under Bruce McCormack. He is the author of several books and articles on Friedrich Schleiermacher. Daniel's latest book Schleiermacher's Theology of Sin and Nature: Agency, Value, and Modern Theology is available at: https://www.amazon.com/Schleiermachers-Theology-Sin-Nature-Routledge/dp/0367188988 Daniel's article that we discussed on the Divine Attributes that argues for a strong continuity from the Reformed scholastics to Schleiermacher is "Schleiermacher and the Reformed Scholastics" from The International Journal of Systematic Theology 17: 413-431 Daniel's post "How to Understand Schleiermacher's Theology- A guest post by Daniel Pedersen" can be read at http://derevth.blogspot.com/2017/05/how-to-understand-schleiermachers.html *He advances his thesis further in an upcoming article for International Journal of Systematic Theology titled "‘A tragic destiny overtook him': Misunderstanding the Introduction to Schleiermacher's The Christian Faith and his Letters to Lücke'" Andrew discussed Gerhard Ebeling's comparison of Luther and Schleiermacher from Internationaler Schleiermacher Kongreß Berlin 1984. What is 'liberal theology'? Is it an umbrella term? Is it something that denotes something specific? It is certainly a "charged" term that elicits different responses amongst Christian theologians and scholars. Dr. Roger E. Olson joins Rev. Andrew on this podcast to discuss what he terms as 'real' liberal theology, or, the Liberal Theological Tradition, as it developed historically, along with its implications and problems. Dr. Olson is the author of many books theology and church history, some of which include the recent title The Journey of Modern Theology: From Reconstruction to Deconstruction published by InterVarsity in 2013, God in Dispute: “Conversations” among Great Christian Thinkers from the Early Church into the 21st Century published by Baker Academic in 2009, and Finding God in the Shack published by InterVarsity Press in 2009. Dr. Olson has written and contributed articles for such publications as Christianity Today, Scottish Journal of Theology, Books & Culture, Christian Century, and Christian Scholar's Review. He also hosts a blog “My Evangelical Arminian Theological Musings” at the website Patheos where he regularly writes, and we highly encourage our listeners to check out his blog at: https://www.patheos.com/blogs/rogereolson/ Episode artwork is a photograph of Albrecht Ritschl who receives some attention in this episode. As Postmodern thought was beginning to take hold in American culture, a concern started rising within Evangelical churches that the message of the bible was being lost. In response, self-proclaimed Christians began "deconstructing" their faith and have since arrived at a new religion that looks and sounds nothing like Biblical Christianity. In this first part, of a two part look at Progressive Christianity, you'll hear a lot that sounds familiar, and maybe even some beliefs that you hold, without actually knowing how much they depart from orthodox Christianity.Show Notes:Episode 26: Mormonism https://www.buzzsprout.com/1538023/8816710-ep-26-counterfeit-christianity-series-part-1-mormonismEpisode 27: Jehovah's Witnesses https://www.buzzsprout.com/1538023/8853258-ep-27-counterfeit-christianity-series-part-2-jehovah-s-witnessesEpisode 28: Catholicism https://www.buzzsprout.com/1538023/8888443-ep-28-counterfeit-christianity-series-part-3-catholicismFrom Christianity to Progressive Christianity and Back Again, Alisa Childers and Josh Morris https://youtu.be/mg8nWHXbwyo5 Counterfeit Truths of Progressive Christianity https://www.biblestudytools.com/bible-study/topical-studies/counterfeit-truths-of-progressive-christianity.html?fbclid=iwar38nd5ry9ahub4y2zrqtydvrw33bmpsw-xm5jedo-tn38_odyl3rvtn5poPhilip Gulley, If the Church Were Christian https://www.amazon.com/If-Church-Were-Christian-Rediscovering/dp/0061698776Deconstructing Faith https://www.premierchristianity.com/home/deconstructing-faith-meet-the-evangelicals-who-are-questioning-everything/267.articleJoel Osteen on Larry King https://youtu.be/YVvvEDSZuZwAlistair Begg, Is the Exclusivity of Christ Unjust? https://youtu.be/xTHGbGCeYjULigonier, Penal Substitution https://www.ligonier.org/learn/devotionals/penal-substitution/History Resources:J.
