What made C.S. Lewis such a compelling thinker and writer? In this episode of Thinking Christian, Dr. James Spencer is joined by Dr. Jeffrey Barbeau, professor of theology at Wheaton College and author of The Last Romantic: C.S. Lewis, English Literature, and Modern Theology. Together, they explore Lewis’s unique ability to blend reason, imagination, and theology—making faith more accessible in a world increasingly skeptical of God.
In early 1820 a young farm boy by the name of Joseph Smith believed he had a vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ appearing to him, exhorting him not to join any of the existing churches of his day, for they were all corrupt. Just over 200 years later in 2023 in Wilmore, Kentuck in the main chapel on the campus of Asbury Theological Seminary, something of a revival began. For two weeks, thousands of people from all over the world came to Ashbury to see for themselves what was happening. During these two weeks, people prayed and sang worship songs. Many Christians, however, debated as to whether or not this was a genuine revival or just an emotive outpouring of mostly Gen-Z'ers. And most Evangelical Christians criticize Joseph's Smith's first vision as either legendary, completely fabricated, or theologically aberrant. How can we rightly discern whether or not people's personal experiences are truly from God? This week on the Profile we wrap up our conversation with theologian and literary scholar Dr. Jeffery Barbeau about his new book The Last Romantic - C.S. Lewis, English Literature, and Modern Theology and consider more of Lewis's insights and how they can equip us to think biblically about personal religious experiences.Jeffery Barbeau (Ph.D., Marquette University) is professor of theology at Wheaton College, Editor of The Coleridge Bulletin, and a writer on British Romanticism, religion and literature, and the history of Christian thought. If you have ever had a deeply moving personal experience with God, you know it can be something that words cannot adequately convey. Perhaps it is deeply emotional, powerful, and moving. The experience solidifies your conviction that what you believe about God is true. You might also believe God "spoke" to you in that moment. But given that there are a multitude of other religions today with devotees who claim to have similar experiences, how can we know that what we have experienced is an authentic movement of the God who is there? This week and next on the Profile, we talk with theologian and literary scholar Dr. Jeffrey Barbeau about his new book The Last Romantic - C.S. Lewis, English Literature, and Modern Theology and how Lewis's thoughts about Romantic poetry might give us some insight about the nature of personal religious experiences and how properly to think about them.Jeffery Barbeau (Ph.D., Marquette University) is professor of theology at Wheaton College, Editor of The Coleridge Bulletin, and a writer on British Romanticism, religion and literature, and the history of Christian thought. “For those of us who are drawn into church history and church tradition and to reading theology, there is very little as transformative as realizing that history is populated by women and men like us who tried to follow Christ in their own time and place and culture and circumstances, some of whom succeeded. … Looking at the saints, they make me want to be a better Christian. They make me want to be a saint.” (Brad East, from the episode)In his recent book, Letters to a Future Saint: Foundations of Faith for the Spiritually Hungry, theologian Brad East addresses future generations of the Church, offering a transmission of Christian faith from society today to society tomorrow. Written as a fellow pilgrim and looking into the lives of saints in the past, he's writing to that post-literate, post-Christian society, where the highest recommendation of faith is in the transformed life.Today, Drew Collins welcomes Brad East to the show, and together they discuss: the importance of being passed and passing on Christian faith—its transmission; the post-literacy of digital natives (Gen Z and Gen Alpha) and the role of literacy in the acquisition and development of faith; the significance of community in a vibrant Christian faith; the question of apologetics and its effectiveness as a mode of Christian discourse; the need for beauty and love, not just truth, in Christian witness; how to talk about holiness in a world that believes less and less in the reality of sin; the difference between Judas and Peter; and what it means to study the saints and to be a saint.About Brad EastBrad East (PhD, Yale University) is an associate professor of theology in the College of Biblical Studies at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. In addition to editing Robert Jenson's The Triune Story: Collected Essays on Scripture (Oxford University Press, 2019), he is the author of four books: The Doctrine of Scripture (Cascade, 2021), The Church's Book: Theology of Scripture in Ecclesial Context (Eerdmans, 2022), The Church: A Guide to the People of God (Lexham, 2024), and Letters to a Future Saint: Foundations of Faith for the Spiritually Hungry (Eerdmans, 2024).His articles have been published in Modern Theology, International Journal of Systematic Theology, Scottish Journal of Theology, Journal of Theological Interpretation, Anglican Theological Review, Pro Ecclesia, Political Theology, Religions, Restoration Quarterly, and The Other Journal; his essays and reviews have appeared in The Christian Century, Christianity Today, Comment, Commonweal, First Things, Front Porch Republic, The Hedgehog Review, Living Church, Los Angeles Review of Books, Marginalia Review of Books, Mere Orthodoxy, The New Atlantis, Plough, and The Point. Brad East joined the pod to discuss his new book, The Church: A Guide to the People of God. From the publisher (Lexham Press):The Bible tells the story of God and his people. But it is not merely history. It is our story. Abraham is our father. And Israel's freedom from slavery is ours.Brad East traces the story of God's people, from father Abraham to the coming of Christ. He shows how we need the scope of the entire Bible to fully grasp the mystery of the church. The church is not a building but a body. It is not peripheral or optional in the life of faith. Rather, it is the very beating heart of God's story, where our needs and hopes are found.Brad East (PhD, Yale University) is an associate professor of theology at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. He is the editor of Robert Jenson's The Triune Story: Collected Essays on Scripture (Oxford University Press, 2019) and the author of four books: The Doctrine of Scripture (Cascade, 2021), The Church's Book: Theology of Scripture in Ecclesial Context (Eerdmans, 2022), The Church: A Guide to the People of God (Lexham, 2024), and Letters to a Future Saint: Foundations of Faith for the Spiritually Hungry (Eerdmans, 2024).His articles have been published in Modern Theology, International Journal of Systematic Theology, Scottish Journal of Theology, Journal of Theological Interpretation, Anglican Theological Review, Pro Ecclesia, and Political Theology; his essays have appeared in The Christian Century, Christianity Today, Comment, Commonweal, First Things, The Hedgehog Review, The Los Angeles Review of Books, The New Atlantis, Mere Orthodoxy, Plough, and The Point.Find Crackers and Grape Juice on Instagram, Facebook, and Substack.

Dr. Barnabas Aspray is Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology at St. Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore, MD and the author of a recent article in the academic journal, Modern Theology, called "Jesus Was A Refugee: Unpacking the Theological Implications."In this episode Dr. Aspray addresses the topic of the refugee crisis around the world by building upon the notion of the Holy Family as refugees in their flight to Egypt in Matthew's Gospel, and by putting a finer point on how all of humanity are, in a particular theological sense, refugees. As he carefully explains, his nuanced approach is not meant to diminish the experiences of refugees, but to highlight our shared humanity with them as a to buttress our international humanitarian efforts.Team members on the episode from The Two Cities include: Dr. John Anthony Dunne, the Rev. Joining Stephanie on the show today, guest Chris Hall shares deep insights from his spiritual journey and his book "A Different Way." His emphasis on the importance of preparing for death with an awareness of the limited time we are given sets the stage for a powerful exploration of trust, transformation, and a recentered life with Jesus. Chris Hall highlights the gift of years and the challenge to prepare for death with both awe and awareness. That preparation is not rooted in fear, but rather recognition of the limited time we have been given. This perspective challenges us to embrace each day as a gift and live intentionally, aligning our lives closely with Jesus' teachings. Chris' latest book, "A Different Way," is a call to recenter our Christian lives around following Jesus. He speaks to seekers, disillusioned Christians, and those seeking congruence between their words and actions. This recentering invites us into deeper intimacy with Jesus, transforming not just our beliefs but our very way of life. He invites listeners to explore internal landscapes to encounter God and correct our perspectives. This call to spiritual introspection and the correction of our views aligns with the need to make the world make sense through corrected perspectives. This deep internal work can lead to a more profound encounter with the divine and a life-lived congruent with the teachings of Jesus. Chris Hall emphasizes the importance of trusting God, even when life is difficult. Trusting God may not guarantee an easy life, but it promises a life full of His presence. His emphasis on the need to help others explore a different way with God underscores the transformative power of vulnerability, trust, and dependence on the divine. He shares personal experiences of suffering and the profound embedding in the love and care of God. This recognition of God's trustworthiness amidst life's challenges emphasizes the importance of trust and the development of character. His story serves as a reminder that God's presence and providential care can be found, even in the midst of life's most difficult moments. Chris Hall's wisdom and insights leave listeners with a profound invitation to embrace life's challenges with trust, knowing that each trial can be an opportunity for growth and a deepening of our relationship with Jesus. His recent life-threatening medical crisis brought into focus God's providential preparation throughout his life. This shared experience serves as a powerful reminder that each moment is part of a greater tapestry, even when we may not fully understand it at the time. As we reflect on Chris Hall's journey and the wisdom he shared, we are reminded of the invitation to trust, to explore a different way of living with Jesus, and to recenter our lives around following Him. His story becomes a beacon of hope, inviting us to embrace spiritual transformation and a life filled with the presence and guidance of Jesus. Chris Hall's journey serves as a compelling call to embrace spiritual transformation, leaning into the challenges and opportunities that life presents, all the while rooted in the trust and love of God. As we carry his insights with us, may we be inspired to live a life that reflects the love, grace, and transformative power of Jesus Christ. MEET CHRIS HALL Christopher A. Hall is author of a four volume set on the Church Fathers: Reading Scripture with the Church Fathers, Learning Theology with the Church Fathers, Worshiping with the Church Fathers, and Living Wisely with the Church Fathers, all published by IVP Academic. How can Christianity address the climate crisis? Isn't the objectifying of nature and the drive to improve our lot a secular legacy of Christendom? And isn't individual conversion more or less irrelevant in a time of systemic crisis?I was delighted to be sent an essay by Gunnar Gjermundsen that asks these questions and more. His insights are wide-ranging, integrating, inspiring and challenging, focusing on a Christianity that is not so much moral as transformative, inviting us to consider again the sayings of Jesus, via theologians such as Maximus the Confessor and psychotherapists like Donald Winnicott. In this discussion we unpack his argument in broadly three moves.First, an analysis of current anxieties that, at heart, are to do with time. A linear view of history has fostered a hope of panicky escape, sacrificing the present for the future as a false substitute for eternity, with devastating consequences for ourselves and the world around us. The problem needs to be addressed at root, which comes in a second section exploring the misunderstanding of eschatology as an event to come and be feared, rather than an unfolding now, to be welcomed. We explore Jesus's teaching as well as how it came to be so profoundly misunderstood. The third section draws in psychological insights, particularly in terms of considering the schizoid, addictive and dread-filled nature of the modern psyche, and turns again to the Christian tradition and the remarkable notion of the kingdom of God that is near, and being born again. The apocalyptical has become a master metaphor for the contemporary imagination, inducing fatalism and denial. Christianity has a vision to undo this terror via the transformation of our consciousness and experience of time. The apocalyptic is not to come but is an unveiling in every moment, a theosis, of the eternal present. And we can live by that alternative. The essay we are discussing is Living on This Earth as in Heaven: Time and the Ecological Conversion of Eschatology, published in Modern Theology, online - https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/moth.12930Gunnar Gjermundsen works in the Faculty of Theology, University of Oslo - https://www.tf.uio.no/english/people/aca/gunnargj/For more on Mark Vernon's work, see http://www.markvernon.com

On his way to Rome to be martyred, Ignatius of Antioch urges the Christians there not to interfere with his impending fate: “Don't hinder me from living,” he wrote. “Let me attain the pure light; then I will be a human being.” Drawing on early Christian sources, especially the newly edited and translated volume, On the Human Image of God, by the fourth-century theologian St. Gregory of Nyssa, this workshop features John Behr, Natalie Carnes, and Thomas Breedlove exploring what it means for human beings to be made in the image of God. What does it look for human beings, as “images of the Image,” to be a work in progress—growing in Christ until we attain the “full measure of Christ.”The Very Rev. Dr. John Behr is Regius Professor of Humanity at the University of Aberdeen. He previously taught at St. Vladimir's Seminary, where he served as Dean from 2007-2017. He is a leading expert on the early church and has translated many seminal texts from the patristic era. His doctoral work focused on issues of asceticism and anthropology in St. Irenaeus of Lyons and Clement of Alexandria, and was published by Oxford University Press in 2000. Fr. John then began the publication of a series on the Formation of Christian Theology: The Way to Nicaea (SVS Press, 2001), and The Nicene Faith (SVS Press, 2003). Synthesizing these studies is the book The Mystery of Christ: Life in Death (SVS Press, 2003). Fr. John also edited and translated the fragments of Diodore of Tarsus and Theodore of Mopsuestia, setting them in their historical and theological context (OUP, 2011). Next, Fr. John published a more poetic and meditative work entitled Becoming Human: Theological Anthropology in Word and Image (SVS Press, 2013) and a full study of St. Irenaeus: St. Irenaeus of Lyons: Identifying Christianity (OUP, 2013). He then completed a new critical edition and translation of Origen's On First Principles, together with an extensive introduction (OUP, 2017), and John the Theologian and His Paschal Gospel: A Prologue to Theology (OUP, 2019). Most recently, he is the editor and translator of Gregory of Nyssa's On the Human Image of God (often titled, “On the Making of Humankind” or “De Hominis Opificio”) (OUP, 2023).Dr. Natalie Carnes is Professor of Theology at Baylor University. She holds a Ph.D. from Duke University, an M.A. in Religion from University of Chicago, and a B.A. from Harvard University in Comparative Religious Studies. A constructive theologian who reflects on traditional theological topics through somewhat less traditional themes, like images, iconoclasm, beauty, gender, and childhood, Natalie draws on literary and visual works as sites of theological reflection to explore questions of religious knowledge and authority. In addition to authoring articles in Modern Theology, Journal of Religion, and Scottish Journal of Theology, among other journals, she is the author of Beauty: A Theological Engagement with Gregory of Nyssa (Cascade, 2014), Image and Presence: A Christological Reflection on Iconoclasm and Iconophilia (Stanford University Press, 2017), and Motherhood: A Confession (Stanford University Press, 2020). For more information on events, blogposts, and other writings, you can visit her website: nataliecarnes.com.Dr. Thomas Breedlove is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Baylor University's Institute for Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in Theology from Baylor University, an M.Div. from Duke Divinity School, and a B.A. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. His primary research topics include issues of human nature, embodiment, and divine image in the fourth-century theology of Gregory of Nyssa and contemporary French phenomenology. He has published on these topics and theology and the arts in Modern Theology, St. Vladimir's Theological Quarterly, Religion and Literature, Literature and Theology, Political Theology, Anglican Theological Review, Heythrop Journal, and a forthcoming volume on phenomenology and art with Bloomsbury Press.
THE CONCLUSION OF OUR SERIES AT LAST. We apologize for the length, but we didn't want to divide this concluding episode in two. Satell, Greg. “Why the Experts Always Seem to Get it Wrong,” Forbes, 2014. Retrieved from https://www.forbes.com/sites/gregsatell/2014/02/19/why-experts-always-seem-to-get-it-wrong/?sh=163664d73a36 On March 24th, 2022, the Associates for Biblical Research announced the discovery of an ancient curse tablet (defixio) on Mount Ebal at the site of "Joshua's altar." In this series, as we promised in episode #52, we revisit this discovery following the publication of the scholarly paper on May 12th of this year. We hope to lay out the context and reasons this discovery and its controversial interpretation is so important. To do so, we must become acquainted with modern theology and biblical criticism as practiced in the contemporary West, the ongoing scholarly debate over the defixio, and finally to discuss C. S. Lewis's article, "Modern Theology and Biblical Criticism." We begin to lay out C. S. Lewis's case for a skeptical approach to the work of the Higher Critics. S. Lewis's article, "Modern Theology and Biblical Criticism." Episodes 109 and 110 together make up Part 4 of our series. On March 24th, 2022, the Associates for Biblical Research announced the discovery of an ancient curse tablet (defixio) on Mount Ebal at the site of "Joshua's altar." This is a potentially WORLD-SHAKING discovery, but the dust has not yet settled, and the academic war is only just beginning. Following the publication of the find and its analysis, the critical juggernaut, led by Drs. Christopher Rollston and Robert Cargill is proceeding apace in an apparent attempt to shut down serious investigation of this defixio. In episodes 107-110 we will investigate in some detail the critical evaluation of this discovery, with Dr. Rollston's position in episodes 108 & 109, and Dr. Cargill's in episode 110. In this series, as we promised in episode #52, we revisit this discovery following the publication of the scholarly paper on May 12th of this year. We hope to lay out the context and reasons this discovery and its controversial interpretation is so important. To do so, we must become acquainted with modern theology and biblical criticism as practiced in the contemporary West, the ongoing scholarly debate over the defixio, and finally to discuss C. S. I argue that they are attempting to poison the well, and are not engaging in a fair academic disagreement based on the reality being presented. In episodes 107-109 we will investigate in some detail the critical evaluation of this discovery, with Dr. Rollston's position in episode 108 and Dr. Cargill's in episode 109. S. Lewis's article, "Modern Theology and Biblical Criticism." *Please see the link below to access the scholarly paper by Dr. Stripling and his associates, which is open access in the journal Heritage Science. I would suggest that our listeners review our original episode, The Christian Atheist #52: “The Curse Tablet: Archaeology and Faith.” I have listed a series of websites below for more information. This talk was given on March 6th, 2023 at Oxford University. For more information please visit thomisticinstitute.org. About the speaker: Lewis Ayres is Professor of Catholic and Historical Theology at Durham University in the United Kingdom. He specializes in the study of early Christian theology, especially the history of Trinitarian theology and early Christian exegesis. He is also deeply interested in the relationship between the shape of early Christian modes of discourse and reflection and the manner in which renewals of Catholic theology during the last hundred years have attempted to engage forms of modern historical consciousness and sought to negotiate the shape of appropriate scriptural interpretation in modernity, even as they remain faithful to the practices of classical Catholic discourse and contemplation. His publications include Augustine and the Trinity (2010) and Nicaea and Its Legacy: An Approach to Trinitarian Theology (2004). He is co-editor of the Cambridge History of Early Christian Literature (2004) and of the Oxford Handbook of Catholic Theology (forthcoming). Professor Ayres has co-edited the Blackwell Challenges in Contemporary Theology series (since 1997), the Ashgate Studies in Philosophy and Theology in Late Antiquity series (since 2007), and has just co-founded with Fortress Press the Renewal: Conversations in Catholic Theology series. He serves on the editorial boards of Modern Theology, the Journal of Early Christian Studies, and Augustinian Studies. He has also served on the board of the North American Patristics Society.
