Just when you thought you had the internet figured out, new waves of technology approach. With them come a torrent of unfamiliar terms: non-fungible tokens, web3, DAOs, the Metaverse. Are they real, hype, or are they keys to solving the world's biggest problems? In this episode, we host investor and futurist Lisa Andrews. She's fascinated by this new technology and sees an opportunity in it to create a positive impact on humanity. As Lisa puts it, we are living in the phigital world. That is to say, a hybrid of the physical and digital world. Think about the life you lead online and the one you lead offline. They're not the same but are closely related. The Metaverse is where those two worlds start to converge. And therein lies a new opportunity for innovation, creativity, and of course, business. If you think you've missed this new wave of technology, think again. There is plenty more to learn and discover. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Direction Not Perfection podcast grew from my desires to reach as many people as I could with information that will help them become and stay healthy. I had no idea how much I would love producing a podcast. In creating the past 113 episodes I have become incredibly energized and fueled by the people I have had the privilege to interview. I spend so much time immersed in each subject leading up to an interview and then working on each episode, that I literally have the feeling of missing some of these individuals when we are finished. Another pleasant surprise is how much I use their content all the time! The wisdom that exists through these interviews is invaluable. I can refer my clients to specific episodes to hear professional advice pertinent to their struggles, that can speak to them and gently introduce a topic that might be habit changing, comforting or inspirational. The beauty of a podcast is that they are not one and done. They are there for you to visit or revisit whenever you need or want to. Whether you are just finding me for the first time or have been listening since episode one, I want to suggest that you go to past episodes and check them out. Today and next week I am going to provide snippets from past interviews that can speak to you or inspire you and give you an understanding of what is buried in past episodes. It might be exactly what you need to plug into your ears today to build yourself up, make you feel stronger or surrounded by hope and equipped to tackle your day. Direction Not Perfection

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 28, 2020 34:37

Every time you turn around there is new hype about fad diets, super foods and eating plans; all with glowing reviews about the amazing results you can get if you use them. They may sound good but if those claims are not backed by research, dietitians don’t promote them. We are trained from day one to look for evidence-based research about any claims. Even if it sounds amazing and people are benefiting, we dig deep to find out more about it. We want to see evidence such as who else could be benefiting from it, who it could be harming and what long term results there might be. It is never a simple answer when it comes to nutrition. There are always many layers to investigate.Today’s interview is with returning guest, Dietitian Lisa Andrews. She has been recognized twice as the Dietitian of the Year by the state of Ohio, so I asked her to address ten of the top food myths.1. Myth: Only Shop the perimeter of the grocery store. Truth: Health foods are found in every area of the store. Read labels. Look for high protein and fiber, low sodium foods. Consider having a dietitian take you on a “grocery tour” to teach you what to look for and avoid.2. Myth: Frozen meals aren’t good for you. Truth: Many frozen meals now come with healthy ingredients and they are portion controlled. They are easy to have on hand for times when you would otherwise go out, order in or settle for whatever is readily available.3. Myth: Frozen fruits and veggies are less healthy than fresh ones. Fact: Most fruits and veggies are frozen within several hours of being picked so they are at the peak of their freshness. Items that you have fresh at home, but will not get to before they go bad, can be frozen to use later, reducing food waste.4. Myth: Several small meals throughout the day are better than 3 large meals. Fact: There is no one eating plan that is right for everyone. Meal timing is dependent on the unique needs of each individual, taking into consideration their hunger, how they feel and their energy requirements.5. Myth: Eating after 6 PM causes weight gain. Fact: What you eat throughout the day and the type of food you consume in the evening, determines whether you gain weight.6. Myth: You should only eat organic foods. Fact: This is a personal choice. Pesticide levels in non-organic food are so low that there is no problem eating them, especially in items with skin or peel that you remove. Buy organic if you like, but don’t feel guilty if you don’t.7. Myth: You shouldn’t eat eggs if you are worried about your cholesterol. Fact: Eggs have good properties in both the white and the yolk. The sides people usually eat with eggs, such as bacon, sausage and cheese, are more harmful to a healthy diet than the eggs so practice moderation in all of them.8. Myth: Avoid all saturated fat. Fact: Try to limit saturated fat to 3 grams or less per serving. Many relatively healthy foods such as natural peanut butter contain saturated fat.9. Myth: Detox diets help to cleanse and remove toxins from your body. Fact: No, they don’t. The liver, kidney and lungs are what removes toxins from your body. Cut out extra calories and take out anything toxic that might be doing harm to your body like processed sugar but make it sustainable to your health. Strange, severely limiting diets, weird teas or similar short-term fixes can cause more harm than good.10. Myth: Drinking coffee is an unhealthy habit. Fact: Coffee has a lot of health benefits. It reduces Parkinson’s, may help with diabetes and gout and is a good source of antioxidants. It is what you put in your coffee that can be unhealthy.Lisa is the owner of Sound Bites Nutrition. Do you know the difference between hunger and food insecurity? Wondering what you can do in your community to lend a helping hand to people in need? My guest this week is #FoodDignity advocate and dietitian, Clancy Harrison, RDN. She's on a mission to remove the stigma associated with food stamps, WIC, and other food assistance programs (she sees these programs as a hand "up" versus a hand "out") and improve the quality of the food provided.  Show Highlights: Clancy Harrison, MS, RDN shares her mission to bust the stigma surrounding food assistance programs. Clancy defines hunger  as something everyone can feel at any time when you don’t have enough food and defines food insecurity as not having enough food to curb the hunger, or you’re eating poor quality food choices that lack nutritional value. Liz and Clancy discuss the health/psychological consequences of not having enough to eat and Clancy asks you to imagine putting your child to bed hungry and how stressful it would be to worry every day how you'll feed your child. Psychosocial feelings associated with not eating enough nutritional food particularly affect children negatively and may even prevent them from participating in sports or school activities. 58% of people who are food insecure live above the poverty rate. The majority of people who use food stamps are the working poor. Clancy talks about working at a food pantry and how it enabled her to talk to people who were food insecure and discover how embarrassed they often feel when accepting food assistance. Clancy discussed how volunteers at the food pantry were reluctant to take extra food and how they eventually accepted food and began sharing recipes with one another. Liz shares about a dietitian in Cincinnati named Lisa Andrews who won a $10,000.00 grant to set up 10 mini food pantries around the city. The program is called, the People's Pantry Cincy. In 2017, one in five families in the US did not have enough food and one in three chronically ill adults have to choose between food, medicine or both. Clancy and Liz discuss whose responsibility it is to take care of those who are food insecure. Obese and food insecure? Clancy says they do co-exist because people may be purchasing poor quality food or may be sedentary because they can’t afford to join a gym, etc. Clancy suggests taking plastic grocery bags to food pantries so they can use them to distribute food. She also suggests donating canned foods with flip-top cans so they're easy to open.     Here is how YOU can get involved: Examples of food assistance volunteer opportunities in communities across the U.S.    * Lisa Andrews is a dietitian in Cincinnati who won a grant to put Mini Food Pantries in food deserts throughout the city. Listen Inside - Daily book previews from Readers in the Know by Simon Denman

Synopsis After losing his sight in a terrible accident, only to learn that the woman he was planning to marry did not love him enough to accept him, Damien Falconer was devastated. Struggling to cope with his disability, he isolated himself from society, allowing no one to get close to him, but his personal assistant, Jake. Upon learning Jake was soon to leave his employ and return to Scotland, Damien was forced to advertise for his replacement. Among the applicants who answered his ad was Lisa Andrews, a registered nurse from Connecticut. But Damien was adamant that he would not be replacing Jake with a woman. His argument was, he did not feel comfortable with a woman doing the things that Jake did for him, but one whiff of Lisa’s unique scent and Damien found himself fighting a blistering physical attraction the likes of which he’d never known before. Should he hire her or should he ignore what his “other” senses were screaming at him, about this woman. Damien rustled with the question for several days, but in the end, he caved. And so began a hunger for a woman he couldn’t see...could only recognize by her unique scent...yet wanted like he’d never wanted anything before. Excerpt Ms. Andrews walked into the room, and Damien felt the air leave his lungs. He could not see her, but he sensed Jake’s reaction too. He was not certain if he was mirroring Jake’s reaction to the candidate or whether his overactive imagination was playing a trick on him. Whatever the reason, he had a physical reaction to whomever it was that walked into his library. She was polite and calm, and he sensed she had a smile on her face because Jake had an answering smile in his voice when he greeted her. Poor Damien, he couldn’t see a thing, but boy, was he aware of her. He could smell the fragrance she was wearing, and it was doing strange things to his body. There was a hint of jasmine, mixed with a bit of musk, but the overwhelming scent was of violet. He recognized the scent because of the perfusion of violet plants that grew in the garden surrounding his house. It was his favorite flower. He was never tired of sitting on the porch just inhaling its heady fragrance. On Ms. Andrews, the fragrance was positively intoxicating. The mixture of violet with her unique scent was overpowering. Damien was almost in pain from the strength of his physical reaction to her. He was uncomfortable in his seat and kept fidgeting to get a more comfortable position. He did not want either Jake or the young woman to notice his discomfort. He desperately wanted to see the woman who was in his library, but he had to be content with listening to her responses to Jake’s questions. She sounded a bit flustered because she would begin each response with a slight nervous laugh, and Jake would respond in kind. This exchange between the two infuriated Damien, who wanted to participate in the conversation. He interrupted one of Jake’s questions to her with one of his own. “Tell me, Ms. Andrews, how long have you been out of school?” He knew the answer because Jake had briefed him on all the candidates ahead of time, but he wanted to ask her a different question to throw her off. She responded with the same little laugh. “About eight years this month, and I can assure you, I have the experience needed to be your personal assistant.” “We’ll see,” was all he could think of by way of a response. He tried to tune out the sound of her voice and concentrate on Jake’s questions, but that proved to be very difficult because he found himself trying to interpret every nuance in her voice as if his very life depended on his understanding her. He became annoyed with himself and signaled for Jake to end the interview. This time he did not move his head, either once or twice. It was left to Jake to make the decision whether or not to have Ms. Andre
