What if true happiness isn't found in material wealth but in something far more profound? In this thought-provoking episode, I spoke with Jeff Golden, author of Reclaiming the Sacred, to explore his decade-long journey of gathering wisdom from psychologists, activists, saints, and poets. Jeff shares how his diverse life roles have shaped his understanding of joy, presence, and interconnectedness. Together, we examine why happiness has declined in industrialized nations despite increasing prosperity, highlighting the vital roles of relationships, health, and self-acceptance. The discussion weaves through spiritual traditions, from Christianity to Taoism and Buddhism, offering insights on how reconnecting with nature and our inner selves can lead to deeper fulfillment. A rich and inspiring conversation that challenges societal norms and invites us to redefine what it means to truly thrive.Links Discussed in This Episode |Book: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara KingsolverBook: Sensing God: Experiencing the Divine in Nature, Food, Music, and BeautyDr. Kristin Neff - Self CompassionConnect with Jeff:Book: Reclaiming the Sacred: Healing Our Relationships with Ourselves and the WorldWebsiteJeff's Course: Reclaiming the Sacred - An Experiential 6 Week Online CourseAbout Jeff |Jeff Golden, M.Ed., was most recently a scholar-in-residence at Vassar College. Millions of people will be giving and receiving chocolate on Valentine's Day, and even more will be doing so around Easter. But do we really understand the true history of it? In this episode of the Table Talk podcast, Stefan Gates is joined by food historian, Emma Kay, to reveal the often very dark history of chocolate. The slave trade was used to exploit millions of people, who were forced to work on plantations.  It may sound like something that could never happen today, but accusations of slavery in the cocoa industry persist in parts of Africa. Not only that, but land is often destroyed as part of the farming process, and that can lead to the deaths of many. So how did it come to be that such value was put on chocolate? In this episode we venture back more than 4,000 years to the very first communities known to have experimented with cocoa beans. How the Mayans saw it as a powerful aphrodisiac, how it ended up in Europe, and the changes that led to the type of chocolate we eat today - very different from what was being consumed in 2,000 BC. Emma Kay, Food Historian Emma is a food historian, author, and prolific collector of Kitchenalia. She lives in the Cotswolds with her husband and young son.  Her articles have appeared in publications including BBC History Magazine, The Daily Express, Daily Mail, Times Literary Supplement, and the Victorian Review (Johns Hopkins University) .  She has contributed historic food research for a number of television production companies and featured several times on Talk Radio Europe, and multiple BBC radio stations.

In this bonus episode I talk with Emma Kay about her new book The Dark History of Chocolate. Firstly, may I say that this is a fantastic book. I constantly alternated between being ashamed of ever eating chocolate to being seduced by the idea of this rich, darkly magical substance. I was left at the end not sure whether I could ever look a chocolate digestive in the face again and equally wanting to rush off and make intensely dark chocolate truffles with smoky whisky & sea salt and indulge in every one! Emma Kay is a museum professional who has worked in major institutions including The National Maritime Museum, The British Museum and the University of Bath. She is qualified in History and Conservation and numerous areas of Heritage Management and Archaeology. She is now a food historian, author and prolific collector of Kitchenalia and lives in the Cotswolds with her husband and young son. Her articles have appeared in publications including BBC History Magazine, The Daily Express, Daily Mail and Times Literary Supplement. She has contributed historic food research for a number of television production companies and featured several times on Talk Radio Europe, BBC Hereford and Worcester, BBC Coventry and Warwickshire, BBC Humberside, BBC Gloucestershire and LifeFM. In 2018 she appeared in a ten-part series for the BBC and Hungry Gap Productions, ‘ The Best Christmas Food Ever' and on BBC Countryfile, co-presenting a feature exploring the heritage of the black pear. At the end of 2019 Emma was filmed for a new Channel 5 series, exploring the food from some of Britain's greatest battles. She is also the author of 9 published books. You can order this book direct from the publishers Pen and Sword, Bookshop.org or other good booksellers. In this episode of OutBüro Voices featuring LGBTQ professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders from around the world, host Dennis Velco chats with Ray Barron-Woolford, a community activist to his core, political assignation attempt survivor, book author, playwright, and so much more. If you want inspiration into the potential impact one person can make when you believe in yourself AND take action, this conversation is for you. Ray Barron-Woolford is one of the first out gay politicians in Britain (United Kingdom). He has a lifetime record of being a community activist championing for establishing the first not for profit housing organization in Britain and established the largest independent food bank in the UK We Care food bank. He is a gay hate crime murder attempt survivor. He has been and currently many entrepreneurial ventures including being a club promoter, club owner, broadcaster, playwright, and author in addition to being a politician, and community activist. He is a regular contributor to The London Economic, and regular on LBC, Talk Radio Europe, BBC, and RT news. In this conversation, we openly chat with Ray whom at first seemed quite fine with a quick one long sentence describing his past. But I wanted to know a bit more detail. You will find as I have grown to know, that Ray is a warm, approachable, humble person that happens to have a heart that considers the needs of others first. He rose from literally nothing as a teen run away in the mid-1970s in Britain, living where he could, often on the streets for months at a time. Like many he was struggling with understanding and coming to terms with his sexual identity s a gay man. He didn't fully accept his sexuality until he was in his 30s. There weren't many ways then for him to explore, learn, share, and express himself. He found himself standing across the street from known gay bars assessing the men who entered and exited until one day he mustered the courage to venture in. During this time to get by, he'd often share a flat whom many often also ended up being closeted gay men all too afraid to even share or talk about with each other. So even when he was fortunate enough to have a roof over his head he lived in silence out of fear of being discovered. His life has truly been about helping others. Helping them meet the basic living necessities, rise to improve their situation. As news spread of his political win, now an out gay man, his success and community victories were not praised by all. He was stalked, harassed, had to be placed into police protective custody, and while there was chased by armed men who shot at him. The bullet luckily only grazed his chin, but had the aim been spot on Ray would have lost his life that day. Part 2 shines a light on an unsung female British hero Ray believes does not get the rightful recognition she deserves. Stick around for that interesting and intriguing story that Netflix has optioned. When Jessica was 31 she thought she had everything she ever wanted. She had the husband, the car, a successful stable job, the thatched cottage with the roses over the door, the multiple holidays. In short, Jessica had everything that was supposed to make her happy, but it didn’t. She felt completely stuck and alone and angry that after all the effort she was deeply unfulfilled and unhappy. In July 1991 Jessica had the courage to say ‘enough’ to herself, that there must be more to life than this and she's never looked back since. The unhappiness was buried deep within because at some point, Jessica lost touch of who she was. What she wanted, her desires, hopes and dreams; she had created a life that pleased everyone else but herself. And she was stuck because she didn’t know who she was and what she truly wanted. That was 26 years ago. Jessica is an international speaker, mentor, guide, coach and she wakes every day feeling blessed that she get to guide and support people to connect to their heart, discover what they truly want and go out and live it. Tom Burns is the Chairman of Age Concern Marbella and San Pedro de Alcantara.Tom was born in Donegal and educated in Belfast and it was here that he started his career and his family. However, having seen the ghastly impact and effects of ‘The Troubles’ in Northern Ireland Tom took the opportunity to move his family to London where he schooled his sons and enjoyed a successful career in the insurance industry. In 2002, Tom decided to take retirement and live a life in the sun on the Costa del Sol, but within 3 months he decided that he was too young and active to sit back and do nothing. He opened a restaurant in Estepona, despite having no restaurant experience, and then was offered the chance to become involved with the charity Age Concern. Using his previous experience in the third-sector, and the support of his enthusiastic team, Tom launched a branch of the charity in Marbella and San Pedro de Alcantara.Tom’s story covers a childhood growing up in segregated Ireland, charity work that took him into Long Kesh prison, and a non-retirement in sunny Spain.Support the show (http://patreon.com/IanRutter)

Debbie Skyrme is a Celebrant who lives in La Herradura on Granada’s Costa Tropical. Debbie and her partner, Jay, have lived in Spain since 2010, firstly renovating an old cortijo in the middle of the countryside before moving to the coast. Debbie had two very different career paths back in her native UK, firstly as a successful IT Trainer who was once headhunted by Microsoft and then as a Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths. It seems that her empathy and love of a celebration, having been brought up in a family that celebrated well, have both resulted in Debbie finding the perfect role for herself in her new home. Debbie’s Life Story includes having had a grandfather who was the chairman of Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club. Support the show (http://patreon.com/IanRutter)

Elle Draper, and her partner Alan, run the information website Spain Buddy and a website design business from their home in Velez Blanco, Almeria. Elle is also one of the administrators of the Facebook group, Writers and Bloggers about Spain (WABAS).Elle was born in the North of England (York), and has a strong background in sales, pub management and call centre recruitment, and at senior operation management level in the electronics industry. Elle is one of those sickeningly chirpy optimistic people, who sees the best in everything and everyone, and while others view their glasses as half full, she sees hers as an opportunity for a top-up of more wine or vodka plus she’ll usually get a round of shots in while she’s waiting. Negativity bores her and bigots, bullies and racists are neither entertained nor tolerated.Support the show (http://patreon.com/IanRutter)

Pop Spencer and his wife, Gelda, live in a cave house in Cortes de Baza, a very rural corner of north-eastern Granada Province. Friends of Pop bought two cave houses and suggested that Pop and his wife might like to rent one, and so began a completely new chapter in the couple's life - a chapter that they would never have imagined. Officially retired, Pop continues to play guitar in a band and together they perform gigs both here in Spain and in the UK. To launch this new podcast, this is a special Christmas edition of my Life Stories chat with the soul singer, PP Arnold, recorded near her home in Salobreña, Andalucia in southern Spain, in mid-December 2017. PP had just released a collection of recordings from the 1970s, entitled "The Turning Tide" and was about to embark on a tour. In my Life Stories programme, produced for Talk Radio Europe, I chat to non-Spanish people who have chosen to live in Spain. We discuss their lives in Spain and what they did before they moved to Spain. Each guest can choose 6 pieces of music that each represents periods in their Life Stories.
