Flying cars have been a staple of science-fiction visions of the future for ages. Perhaps most famously in “Back to the Future II.” The film may have overshot the mark a bit with Doc and Marty McFly navigating full-on air highways in 2015. But Utah is pushing for the technology to take off by 2034, when the state hosts the Olympic and paralympic winter games. We're not exactly talking about flying Delorians or vehicles you'd recognize as a car, but rather small, lightweight aircraft for traveling shorter distances. Reporter Caroline Ballard got a first look at the air taxis.

Welcome to Episode 115 of The Filmumentaries Podcast. This time I'm talking to John Bell, a concept artist and art director whose career has spanned some of the most memorable films of the last four decades. From Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home to Jurassic Park and Back to the Future II and III,John's work has left a significant mark on cinema. In our conversation, John takes us back to the early days of his career, when he transitioned from designing cars at General Motors to creating video game concepts at Atari, before finally finding his way into the film industry. He shares the story of how a speculative portfolio sent to ILM eventually opened the door to a career that included working alongside legends like Nilo Rodis-Jamero and Ken Ralston. We talk in depth about his work on Back to the Future II, where he imagined a future Hill Valley steeped in a mix of Americana and 1980s aesthetics, and Jurassic Park, where he brought bold, colorful designs to vehicles, props, and even the park's iconic branding. John also reflects on how collaboration is at the heart of filmmaking, with directors like Steven Spielberg and production designers like Rick Carter encouraging his input while shaping the look and feel of these projects. We also cover his time working on Antz at DreamWorks, where he stepped into the role of production designer for the first time, and Rango, ILM's first animated feature.Throughout, John shares his approach to balancing creativity and problem-solving, and the importance of pulling inspiration from both his surroundings and his past experiences. It's a wide-ranging discussion that touches on everything from the challenges of designing for science fiction, fantasy, and animation to how the industry has changed over the years. I hope you enjoy it.All the links
On the Saturday October 19, 2024 episode of The Richard Crouse Show we'll meet director Ali Abbasi. His film “The Apprentice,” which is now playing in theatres, is a controversial coming-of-age look at Donald Trump's early years under the mentorship of lawyer Roy Cohn. It paints a picture of the future president of the United States as an ambitious, if slightly awkward guy, who came to believe that there are only two kinds of people in the world, “killers and losers.” Ali Abbasi joined me on the phone to discuss his six year journey to getting this film made and released and much more. Then, Elijah Wood stops by. He began his career as a child actor, appearing in everything from “Back to the Future II” to “Internal Affairs” opposite Richard Gere. He became an international star after playing Frodo Baggins in the acclaimed "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. His extensive filmography now includes “Bookworm,” an intriguing film about a 12-year-old named Mildred whose life is turned upside down when her mother lands in hospital and estranged, American magician father, Strawn Wise, played by Elijah Wood, comes to look after her. Hoping to entertain the bookish tween, Strawn takes Mildred camping in the notoriously rugged New Zealand wilderness, and the pair embark on the ultimate test of family bonding -- a quest to find the mythological beast known as the Canterbury Panther. It's a lovely film and it was lovely to speak with Elijah Wood about it and his secret regarding “Lord of the Rings.” Finally, we'll meet Jenny Heijun Wills. She was born in Seoul, South Korea, raised in Southern Ontario, and currently lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is the author of Older Sister. “Not Necessarily Related.: A Memoir.” As a self-described transnational and transracial
After the failed assassination attempt of a former President, it seems like every single group completely lost their mind and connection to reality. Some even suggest that the inch separating him from death actually changed or split our timeline. This brings us to the fascinating works of Ingersoll Lockwood, a 19th-century author who wrote about a character named Baron Troomp. This Barron (like Baron) had a mentor named Don, a strange connection to Russia, german ancestory, a Troomp Castle or Tower, and in the final novel a candidate is unexpectedly elected to President causing New York to explode into riots with a leftist mob marching on 5th Avenue where Trump Tower is today. These motifs have people wondering if Trump, or maybe Lockwood, is a time traveler, especially since Trump's uncle handled the papers of Nikola Tesla who also lived in New York at the same time as Lockwood. Considering the seeming predictions of the Simpsons and Back to the Future II, not to mention a Marge Simpson coffin recently found dating to 3,000 years ago in Egypt, the story seems to get every stranger. -FREE ARCHIVE & RSS: https://www.spreaker.com/show/the-secret-teachings Twitter: https://twitter.com/TST___Radio Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesecretteachings WEBSITE (BOOKS, RESUBSCRIBE for early show access): http://thesecretteachings.info Paypal: rdgable@yahoo.com CashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.com

It's our annual Halloween episode where we get lost in science fiction! Catriona explains how the hoverboards and flying cars in Back to the Future II (1989) could become real; Stu explores the practicalities of moving ecosystems to space as seen in the 1972 movie Silent Running; and Chris goes down the path of wormholes as mentioned in 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder.

Siempre Viva! Live Forever! Marie and Blaire dive into one of the greats…Death Becomes Her! In this dark comedy, Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn are Madeline and Helen, two longtime frenemies and love rivals (over a semi-dorky Bruce Willis) who want to be young and HOT forever, so they drink a fountain of youth potion that perks ‘em up and makes them immortal! Hijinks ensue, naturally. The costumes were designed by thee Joanna Johnston, who did Hellraiser (!), Back to the Future II and III, The Witches reboot, Forrest Gump, Love Actually, and so much more, and every look is to die for (no pun intended). We want everything from Helen's Nike t-shirt to Madeline's marabou-trimmed diva robe! Listen to us fangirl over these iconic costumes, chat about fun facts, and figure out what we're adding to cart. For visuals of the costumes, follow us on Instagram at @fishnetflixpod and TikTok @fishnetflix ! DM or email your movie requests at info@fishnetflix.com! We love hearing from you! MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM MOLASSES 2X4! On this very special Christmas episode, the Cannon Bros (Frank and Geoff) are watching the 1985 Chuck Norris "holiday" classic INVASION U.S.A. Or as we all call it...the prequel to AVENGING FORCE. Put on your Jay Leno denim special because we are giving you the gift of confusing politics. A movie that has so much Christmas shoved in between blowing up suburbs with rocket launchers, you would think Shane Black directed it. From shooting people in the penis, to rocket launchers, to realizing this movie is Back to the Future II for the GOP, to rocket launchers, to constantly being worried about that lil armadillo to rocket launchers. It's the gift that keeps on giving! Did we mention rocket launchers? There is almost TOO much action in this stone-cold Cannon classic and we go through every...damn...moment. It's the episode that'll hit you with so many rights you'll be begging for a left! Follow us on the socials! Listen as Mike and Tom discuss Back to the Future II. They discuss how in the world Tom describes number two as a bad movie but ranks it above three which he admits is a good movie, how they disagree about the worth of seeing scenes from the original movie from new vantage points and how every character seems to not notice what is happening quite loudly directly behind them.
In this episode's off-topic section, Brett talks about his even newer favorite action sport. (Sorry birdwatching, you've just been knocked down to second place.) You have seen the ads. Maybe even seen someone zooming by on one in person... but according to Brett, it is impossible to predict how fun the Onewheel is until you step on one and feel the "floating" sensation á la Back to the Future II. Speaking of the second installment of things, Josh covers The Purge. No, not the movie. The TV Series. But just that one season. No, not season one. That one second season that's so good. "Floating" on just one wheel and recommendations for only the second season? It's 2020 bitches, there are no rules. Just like Purge night.
