Gather round, friends, because we've got a real treat for you today! We had the pleasure of chatting with two incredible authors who are using their books to spread messages of love, acceptance, and the power of the arts.  First up, we met Laura Meredith, the author of the delightful children's book "Christopher's New Home." Laura shared the heartwarming story of how she adopted a tiny, sickly lamb named Christopher and gave him a loving forever home on her little farm in Scotland. With her passion for animals and her own experiences of feeling like an outsider, Laura wove an uplifting tale about finding your place in the world.  We learned that Laura's home is a veritable Noah's Ark, filled with all sorts of rescued critters - from sheep and goats to a mini Pomeranian and even a pig! She has a real gift for seeing the beauty in every creature and helping them feel safe and loved. Laura's message of acceptance and the transformative power of love really resonated with us. Next, we chatted with Bruce Weinberg, the author of "The Fabulous Feats of Mister B" series. As a former drama teacher, Bruce is a huge advocate for the arts in education. He shared how drama classes can be a haven for kids to express themselves, build confidence, and find their tribe. Bruce's latest book, "Jarobi from Nairobi," tackles themes of diversity and inclusion in a heartwarming way. Both Laura and Bruce are using their talents to create stories that inspire kindness, empathy, and a deeper appreciation for the world around us. If you're looking to add some uplifting, thought-provoking reads to your family's library, be sure to check out their books on Amazon. Getting your first shot working within this industry shouldn't come down to luck or privilege. Take it from Tara, who got her dream internship based on what she refers to as a fluke. Tara says “this needs to change…we need to make those pathways for junior talent much clearer.” Tara McKenty and Laura Florence are both leaders in their field and while sitting down with host Merlee Jayme, they said they feel they have a responsibility to create change and provide more opportunities for people coming into the industry and those already in it.  Tara, Laura and Jayme are passionate about giving back and discuss the initiatives they founded to provide more opportunities for training underrepresented talent, retaining underrepresented talent and helping them grow into leadership positions. These include More Girls, Google Rare and The Misfits Camp. This year, Tara judged on the 2023 LIA Digital and Use of Social Media & Influencers Jury and Laura sat on the Pharma & Medical jury.  Laura said that a lot of the work had a focus on health literacy and sharing information to ensure patients get a better outcome.Tara's focus was on content creation and says that influencers who are native users of platforms like TikTok know how to design creative for the platform far more easily than people who are coming from more traditional film backgrounds. While this interview episode focuses on hope – and how Laura V. is healing from severe trauma more quickly and easily than she had thought possible – it does contain graphic descriptions that may upset some listeners. This episode is definitely not suitable for children, so please don't listen if you're under eighteen. Even if you're an adult, if the thought of a five-year-old girl being pulled into a sex trafficking operation, then experiencing extreme abuse for more than eight years, is too much for you to bear, please stop right here.  Laura V, one of my healing clients, gives frank descriptions of her ten years as a victim of incest and sex trafficking. Her father, one of many men who abused her, sold her into sexual slavery when she was a young girl.  This 80-minute episode includes details of how she and many other children experienced severe abuse, which some did not survive. She also describes how Dissociative Identity Disorder has helped her cope with these traumatic experiences.  Laura discusses her experiences in the context of how she's healing from these traumas using quick and effective modalities, especially Internal Family Systems Therapy and my Instant Divine Assistance Invocations.  Both Laura and I have been amazed at how rapidly she's been healing during the sessions I've been facilitating for her. Our intention with this episode is to show you that, no matter how severe the trauma you've experienced, quick and effective healing might be possible.  After our interview, I'll give you a brief overview of child sex trafficking. This will help you put Laura's experience into a larger context. I've included links to Laura's recommended books and support resources for childhood sexual abuse and Dissociative Identity Disorder below. Laura offers these key takeaways from her interview: 1. No matter how long ago or how recent the abuse, no matter how minor or severe the abuse, healing is possible. 2. Healing doesn't have to be grueling, exhausting or hard. It can be quick, effortless, and uplifting! 3. With the Instant Divine Assistance Invocations and Internal Family Systems Therapy, you can confront, process and completely heal difficult and even terrifying trauma memories. And you can do it safely and quickly. Experience had taught me that facing the terrors I experienced would put me in crisis.  With Benjamin's skilled help, I faced those terrors and found compassion for my abusers and myself. After I transmuted those painful, burdensome memories, I found peace and joy on the other side. I did not have to recover from these sessions for even a few minutes! 4. There is hope. It is possible to find freedom, joy, and a future that is good. Your Higher Self, or God, is guiding you to that future every step of the way! If you or someone you know is a victim of human trafficking, you can get help at humantraffickinghotline.org/, or by calling 1-888-373-7888. ******************** Laura highly recommends these resources on childhood sexual abuse and Dissociative Identity Disorder: Discussing Dissociation site by Kathy Broady, MSW. Laura and Benjamin just bring the possibilities to a whole new level in this interview. Benjamin is a genius at knowing what to bring to light and Laura is extraordinary as a being of light! These are two experts with big hearts. The interview was not upsetting to me in any way, it was a demonstration of how IFS works and not a scary interview just on child trafficking. The warning at the beginning is appropriate because some individuals may be triggered by any mention of such a horrendous crime. Dr. Laura welcomes guests Laura Cohen, counsellor and founder of her own nature therapy practice, and Philip Vanhoutte, ITC industry professional and author of “The Smarter Working Manifesto”, to the show to talk about the power of Vitamin N, nature. Both Laura and Philip are champions of the benefits of a connection with nature at work and in life.Laura Cohen, who works with Dr. Laura through Canada Career Counselling, details studies that show people to be happiest in coastal environments and outdoors. She also cites the profound benefits of nature for those living with ADHD. Philip Vanhoutte is a proponent of Biophilic Design, which includes identifying fourteen patterns of nature that would ideally be included in a building to directly impact the wellness of individuals within. The ways in which nature improves our work lives and overall health are compelling and it becomes apparent that we need to set ourselves up to maximize our interactions with nature. Laura and Philip share their individual expertise on the transformative power of nature and how they each advise incorporating more of the outdoors into our daily lives. “There's also this idea that I think a lot of the time we see nature as this thing that's separate from us or that it's a commodity to fulfill us and make us feel good… it reduces our stress hormones and we see it as something that's beneficial. But the next level is kind of understanding the reciprocity and how do I give back to nature, and developing that sort of deeper relationship with nature.” Laura CohenAbout Laura Cohen:Originally from Montreal, Laura is now based in Halifax with a 10 minute walk to the ocean. For the last 6 years, Laura has worked as a counsellor in universities, Employee Assistance Programs, and in private practice, including her own nature therapy practice and Canada Career Counselling.  Laura holds a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology from McGill University and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a minor in Psychology from Concordia University. Cinematographer Laura Merians Gonçalves was extremely intrigued to work on the new Prime Video series, Dead Ringers. The show is based on the 1988 David Cronenberg movie, which starred Jeremy Irons as twin gynecologists. When she read the script for the series, Laura thought changing the genders of the twins to female gave the show more interest. She liked that over six episodes, they could explore a deeper, more complicated story about women. Laura shot the bulk of the series, episodes three, four, five and six. Both Laura and DP Jody Lee Lipes, who shot episodes one and two, worked closely together to share ideas and find the look of the show. There is a restraint to the color palette, with the exception of red as a theme- just as in the movie. They used red scrubs and even red latex gloves in the operating rooms. The style of the show is very stark and elegant, making it easier to cleanly insert the twinning shots. The biggest challenge for Dead Ringers was ensuring that the twinning for actor Rachel Weisz was seamless and convincing. Jody had previous experience shooting twin shots with VFX supervisor Eric Pascarelli on the HBO series I Know This Much Is True. For Dead Ringers, the twinning shots were done with the assistance of an old motion control camera system that actually used floppy disk drives. Anything involving twinning was discussed in advance and carefully planned and blocked. A body double, Kitty Hawthorne, was also essential for the twinning effect to work. Rachel would do rehearsals and then takes for side A, with Kitty miming the other twin. Then they would switch and do side B, with Kitty now mimicking the A side twin. The motion control camera exactly synched the camera so that the scene could be composited seamlessly together in post. Laura found that with the real-time movie magic they were able to create, it was easy to forget that actor Rachel Weisz was actually just one person. Laura Campbell joins me today to chat all things switching her sitch from a corporate creative to creating an e-commerce product, Hackerlily and launching online. Laura and I were introduced through the Mums & Co. Community as 2 business owners solving potentially hazardous problems in the child safety space (her with Hackerlily and myself with Buckle Bandage). Laura and I share the journey of creating a product from scratch, with no previous product design or manufacturing experience. We chew the logistics on what can right and what can go wrong with materials and supply. We also discuss the beauty of having no commercial rental space and launching purely online. Both Laura and I have completely bootstrapped our products ourselves with no external funding and not having to mortgage our family homes! This is a must listen for anyone who is thinking of, or is in the midst of growing an e-commerce business. This is especially important for those who want to self fund and minimise financial risk.

Who is Westwind Orchard and their cider Fabio Chizzola & Laura Ferrara are the owners/farmers of Westwind Orchard located in Accord, New York on the west dies of the Hudson River. The orchard was bought in 2002 and was as Fabio described it "abandoned". Over time her pruned and replanted and open the area for Pick Your Own in 2008.  In addition to offering the apples, pizza was being made and sold. In time Fabio noticed that many of teh patrons were bringing their own wine, beer and perhaps cider to drink with the food. That was an a-ha moment, when he realized that they could do more than just offer apples to take home but instead ferment the select crop into cider! Both Laura and Fabio are of Italian descendent with Fabio growing up in Rome, which leads to an obvious statement that rings true. "I'm Italian I know food.…I know how food should taste.” Today the orchard has 70-80 varieties of apples and  the Pick Your Own option is no longer available with all the apples going into the production of Westwind Orchard's Cider. In the first episode of the Female Changemakers Podcast, Laura and Sanna talk through the effects of birth trauma, miscarriage and gaining control that led Laura to create Lola&Lykke, a support platform for mums. When Laura´s first baby was born, she experienced severe complications that were nearly fatal due to her not getting the care she urgently needed. Laura considers herself lucky for having fully recovered from the experience with a healthy baby – although as the women agree, living or dying at birth should not be about luck. During her second pregnancy, Laura was not as lucky, and she ended up losing her baby at nearly four months pregnant. The women discuss the importance of being prepared and being in control of your birth experience. There is a lot of influence from the social media expectations of wanting a drug-free, water birth with no emergency caesarean, but it doesn't go to plan for so many of us. When things do not go to plan, this can easily lead to the loss of power and control. Women are in a very vulnerable position physically and emotionally at birth, and a sense of being in control can make a huge difference to the experience of birth, as Laura explains about her third pregnancy. Women are often made to feel that their experience does not matter, all that matters is a healthy baby. Both Laura and Sanna agree that we need to work towards improving women´s experiences at birth and during postpartum: simply surviving birth is not a good enough outcome for mums. There is a need to start supporting mums as much as we support babies, and to create change we need to get our collective voices heard.

We also discuss Biceps After Babies podcast hosted by Amber Brueezeke and the My Fitness Pal app as two additional resources.  Both Laura and Stephanie have followed different nutritional plans.  Laura counts macros while Stephanie follows an intermittent fasting plan.  Both of us have found success with our varied nutritional focuses.  We point to an article by Alexandria Sifferlin titled Why Your Diet isn't Working as an explanation for different dietary needs. Finally, we discussed the way nutrition leads to overall energy.  Our holiday diets helped us realize how a healthier diet helps with focus, energy, and overall positive outlook.

Part of the lives of many artists is the business of teaching. For some it is a financial necessity and for others it is an emotional or moral imperative. Whatever the reasons you have for teaching it does need to be taken seriously, you have an obligation to your students and doing it well can be massively rewarding. Both Laura and Peter teach and both of them have years of positive experiences, hundreds of students who have had a great time and have gone away with a better understanding of the subject. Pornography is often talked about as this abstract alien “thing” that has no connection to the real-world experience of any “decent” or “good” person. The thinking goes that since pornography is this anti-feminist and morally damaging abstraction, it must originate from a dark place consumed with hate and misogyny. But what if I told you that, in fact, there’s a whole spectrum of pornography dedicated to paying homage to the most cherished children’s stories and beloved horror classics like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1965), The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr, Hyde (1886), and Dracula (1897)? And how would your opinions of pornographers change if you knew that they loved these books as much as you do? Well, that’s part of the story being told by professor Laura Helen Marks in her book: Alice in Pornoland: Hardcore Encounters with the Victorian Gothic. Unsurprisingly, Laura’s academic background is in English, and this book is a product of her attempt to unite Victorian era gender and sexual politics with contemporary pornographic narratives. While many people don’t consider pornographic narratives too deeply, Laura argues that many pornographic tropes that we are familiar with today, including notions around a loss of innocence, the bisexual erotic undercurrents of Dracula biting both men and women, and the dual personality traits of pornography viewers themselves, originate from Victorian literature. While we often think of pornography as a medium indulging shamelessly in all types of sexual practices, pornography still needs to establish some type of taboo within their narratives for one of their characters to subversively upend sexual norms. Incorporating conventions from Victorian literature within these pornographic narratives provides both the cultural norms—and characters willing to subvert those norms—all within one book! Additionally, the obvious tension within Victorian novels where sexuality is alluded to with metaphor, is finally liberated within pornographic narratives where the underlining sexuality of these books are realized within pornography. Laura’s creative approach to pornography studies has quickly made her one of the most essential voices in contemporary pornography studies. Alice in Pornoland is one of the most unique pornography studies books you’ll ever read because of the ways it makes you rethink both classical literature and pornography itself. This is a special episode of the Porno Cultures Podcast because it’s our first live episode recorded at Babeland (ironically, another Victorian era reference!) in Seattle Washington. Both Laura and I were in Seattle for the annual Society for Film and Media Studies conference, and I thought that this would be a great opportunity to have a live episode where a bunch of pornography scholars could come together to not only celebrate Laura’s amazing book, but also honor the history of one of the country’s most important sex shops, Babeland!  Laura Helen Marks’ website  Laura’s twitter  “#Following: Laura Helen Marks”  Laura’s Porn Studies article from Feminist Media Histories  Laura’s Rialto Report feature on Jeff Stryker  “Merry XXX-mas: A Brief History of Yuletide Smut”  “The Duce: Porn, Nostalgia and Late Capitalism”  Alice in Wonderland: An X-Rated Musical Comedy & Fantasy (1976)  “Alice in Wonderland (1976): What Really Happened?”  buy or rent Dracula Erotica (1980)  Rare photos from Dracula Exotica found by the Rialto Report.  Shaun Costello’s open letter To Lauran Helen Marks about Dracula Exotica.  Interview with Vanessa Del Rio  Dr. Jerkoff and Mr. Hard (1997)  “Still Alice Director: Escaping a Religious Cult, Making Porn and Celebrating Julianne Moore’s Oscar”  buy Fuckenstein (2012)  adultdvdtalk.com  upcoming events at Babeland in Seattle   facebook.com/AcademicSex @PornoCultures Help Support the Podcast! A little about our guests. Alex & Laura have been together for 6 years and started in business together right away. Alex fell madly in love when he saw how well Laura could prep a window. At age 8 Alex started a paper route, so he started being an entrepreneur very young. Alex served in the Air Force and was a survival instructor. He and Laura hope to create another business teaching survival training classes like those you see on Bear Grylls.  Laura met Alex in 2009 on a blind date. She started working with him soon after. She became more involved with the business. She has a Bachelor’s in Organizational Management. Before meeting Alex, Laura had several businesses in construction clean-up, house-cleaning and elder care. They have a son, Gunner, age 13. He is already being trained in the business.  A little about their business. Both Laura and Alex work on the installation of the window films. Laura also takes care of the back-office including all finances while Alex does all the bidding, estimates and sales. Laura is dipping her toe into the sales arena. They are also creating a civilian survival school based on shows like Naked and Afraid and Bear Gryllis. Look for a future announcement, especially if you enjoy hiking, back-country skiing, or camping. One piece of advice (the nutshell version) Laura: Choose wisely. If you are not a good mate in marriage. If you are not good mates, you won’t make good business partners. Alex: Eat, sleep, and breath your business. If you don’t live your business, you won’t be successful. You must be 100% committed to the business. Laura Bates, journalist and curator of the Everyday Sexism Project, explains to Matthew Parris why the 19th century children's author Louisa May Alcott has her vote for a Great Life. They are joined by Sarah Churchwell, Professor of American Literature at the University of East Anglia. Louisa May Alcott is best known as the writer of "Little Women", the story of four sisters growing up during the Civil War in America. Generations of girls have read the book, which at first sight seems to be an improving tract on growing up and becoming a good Christian wife. Both Laura and Sarah have a very different reading of the book and believe Louisa May Alcott to have been a remarkable woman and a dedicated feminist.
