For years, the most extreme climate scenarios shaped headlines, policy debates, and public fear—despite growing evidence that many of those projections were increasingly detached from real-world energy and emissions trends. Now, in a major shift ahead of the IPCC's Seventh Assessment Report, climate modelers are quietly abandoning some of their most dramatic assumptions. In this episode of Sanity Check, David R. Legates breaks down the rise and fall of RCP8.5 and SSP5-8.5, the “worst-case” climate pathways that came to dominate public discourse, and explains why CMIP7 is moving in a different direction. From coal projections and emissions trends to media narratives and scientific self-correction, this episode explores what these changes mean for climate science, public policy, and the future of the climate debate.https://gmd.copernicus.org/articles/19/2627/2026/https://rogerpielkejr.substack.com/p/rcp85-is-officially-deadhttps://www.theclimatebrink.com/p/emissions-are-no-longer-followinghttps://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-51281986https://www.carbonbrief.org/explainer-the-high-emissions-rcp8-5-global-warming-scenario/https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0360544217314597Visit our podcast resource page: https://cornwallalliance.org/listen%20to%20our%20podcast%20created%20to%20reign/Our work is entirely supported by donations from people like you. Have you ever realized, halfway through a unit or a school week, that you're heading in the wrong direction? The text isn't landing, the engagement is dipping, and the "vibe" feels off—but you keep going anyway because you've already invested so much time?In this episode, we are tackling the Sunk Cost Fallacy in education. We explore why our brains resist change (the Psychology of Change) and why a pivot isn't a sign of failure—it's a sign of a leader who is actually listening to their students. I'm giving you the professional and emotional green light to surrender the "perfect plan" for the perfectly timed intervention. What You'll Learn in This Episode:The Sunk Cost Fallacy: Why we stay on the wrong path just because we "already started," and how to break that cycle. The Psychology of Change: A brief look at why our brains crave the predictable and how to navigate the friction of growth.Aligning Your Pivot with Your Purpose: How to use your "word of the year" to ensure your shifts are purposeful, not just reactive.Data-Driven Pivots: How to use the Student Connection Profile Tool as your "receipt" to justify instructional changes to your administration. The Coaching Corner:In this week's segment, we use our foundational tools to ensure our pivot is grounded in student brilliance:Instructional Anchor Questions:Self: Is this pivot making things "easier" for me, or more "accessible and rigorous" for my students?Peers: How will this shift allow my students to better see and support one another's brilliance?World: Does this new direction better prepare them for the challenges of the world? The AAA Reflection Framework:Awareness: Where am I currently feeling the most "friction"? Is it a signal to pivot?Acceptance or Rejection: Can I reject the guilt of "starting over" and accept that my students need a different path right now?Action: Use your Student Connection Profile Tool to identify one specific shift for tomorrow's lesson.Implementation Intention:"This week, I will identify one lesson where the 'vibe' feels off and I will give myself permission to pivot the task in the moment."

Eli Mazour is joined by Juristat's Francesca Cruz and patent attorney Clint Mehall to look at what the examination data actually says about recent USPTO changes. The conversation moves past anecdotes to analyze how new examiner performance appraisal plan (PAP), new Section 101 guidance, and the end of the AFCP program are affecting day-to-day patent prosecution. The guests discuss a new framework for examiner seniority based on "At-Bats"—the total number of applications an examiner has handled—rather than just years at the Office. The data reveals surprising trends in office action consistency and why mid-level examiners might be more difficult than juniors. The discussion also covers the measurable decline in after-final allowances, why practitioners are defaulting to RCEs, and whether new guidance is actually moving the needle on Section 101 rejections in difficult art units.Chapters: 00:00 - Introduction03:00 - What Practitioners are Hearing: An "Incredible Year of Change"04:39 - Examiner Morale and the New Performance Appraisal Plan06:24 - Redefining Seniority: Measuring "At-Bats" vs. Tenure12:07 - Data Reveal: Junior vs. Senior Behavioral Trends15:47 - The "Confidence Gap" and Obviousness Theories18:19 - Art Unit Volatility: Why Individual Stats Matter More Than Averages22:52 - Interviews and AFCP: Addressing the USPTO "Myth-Busters"28:44 - The Shift to RCEs and the Decline of After-Final Allowances34:52 - Section 101 Trends: Has AI Guidance Changed Rejection Rates?44:47 - Final Thoughts: Preparing for Prosecution in 2026Subscribe to the Voice of IP Substack: https://voiceofip.com/

Are you self-aware? Thankfully, it's not a yes or no question. Self-awareness is the practice of knowing yourself without judgment and it isn't a one-and-done achievement. It's a lifelong practice that exists on a spectrum, varies across different domains of your life, and requires us to embrace all our multitudes—even the parts we'd rather push away. The truth is that you are worth knowing. All of you. We'll dig into some of the obstacles and superpowers that self-awareness brings, including its foundation for psychological health, wellbeing, and ultimately, living a more inspired life. In episode 7's Living Leadership segment, I was joined by my long time friend, partner of our sport management program, and outstanding Trinity University alumnus (class of 2000), Terris 'T' Tiller. T is the Director of Alumni Career Engagement at Trinity and returned back home after a distinguished career on the U.S. Modern Pentathlon team and long-time team member at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. During our conversation Terris emphasizes the need for leaders to create spaces that allow others to be seen, spaces to know they are valued. He considers equity and inclusion work to be deeply embedded in his day-to-day life and sees it as a way to grow capacity for the entire organization, but he knows it starts with vulnerable leaders who seek to earn trust by being the first to trust. He models that vulnerability for us when he shares stories about his transition from life as a student to life as an Olympian and about the day he knew his competition days were over. Terris' concluding advice, to stay curious, couldn't be more powerful and perhaps never more important in our current climate. To conclude the episode, I lectured on chapter 15 of the 10th edition of Peter G. Northouse's "Leadership: Theory and Practice." During the segment, I discuss the Inclusive Leadership concepts described and designed by Donna Chrobot-Mason and Quinetta Roberson. In the lecture I mention this research article. If you want to know about the reason inclusion and inclusive leadership matters, please read "Gendered Leadership Networks in the NCAA: Analyzing Affiliation Networks of Senior Woman Administrators and Athletic Directors" (request full text here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/323505935_Gendered_Leadership_Networks_in_the_NCAA_Analyzing_Affiliation_Networks_of_Senior_Woman_Administrators_and_Athletic_Directors) I hope you enjoy the episode. Drop me a note; I'd love to hear your thoughts so I can bring them into our class.

"I thought my calling was to be a Catholic priest." – Ryan Monk It wasn't a whim. Ryan devoted years — undergrad, master's, a year of theology in seminary — to answering what he believed was his life's purpose. But somewhere along the way, a quiet unease began to grow. His head said priesthood but his heart whispered his gifts might belong in a different kind of service — one with a family at the center & a new way of walking alongside people in their most important moments. So, he traded vestments for brick dust, late-night restaurant shifts, & finally, law school — chasing a career that could both provide for his young family & serve others. Then 2008 hit. The economy tanked. A Big Law offer disappeared. And that mortgage, those babies… they were staring him down. Ryan took one last leap of faith — starting from a borrowed desk in a warehouse. Little by little, he built his own law firm on three values you can't fake: humility, gratitude, & joy — the kind that shows up in grief, uncertainty, recessions, pandemics, & all the moments in between. If you've ever wondered whether changing course can bring you closer to your true calling… Connect at monklegal.com Joseph Campbell said it best of journeys like Ryan's: “Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls.”
A listener wrote me recently to say she's made more mistakes that she can count. She wanted advice as to how she could get back on track. "How do I change course when I've done everything wrong?" She had lots of other great questions, too, so in Episode 91, I'm tackling all of them. I hope you'll listen in and be blessed. Before she became one of Georgia's most respected attorneys, Joyce Gist Lewis was chasing a different dream—acting on stage in Atlanta. This week, we're talking about an under-discussed part of federal gun law and a significant recent update to it. While most gun owners know you need to pass a background check to buy a gun from a licensed dealer. And most also know you need to pass one to get a concealed carry license. But many don't know their concealed carry license can be used to bypass the sales background check requirement--at least, in certain states. That list of states got longer this week as the result of a Gun Owners of America (GOA) lawsuit and President Donald Trump's executive review of gun policy. Now, 30 states have "Brady Permits" that allow holders to bypass the sales check. GOA's Sam Paredes joins the podcast to walk through the years-long legal fight. He lays out how GOA plans to lobby states to change their laws to qualify for the alternative status. He also said GOA plans to file follow-up suits to get ATF to recognize even more permits. Special Guest: Sam Paredes.

Reunited, Coco and Nish are finally back together in the studio to talk U turns, disability benefits, Brexit and… gimp masks? There's a lot of politics to catch up on including some big shifts from the Labour government. First on Gaza - Keir Starmer and David Lammy changed tack with fierce criticism of the Israeli government. But critics argue that without an actual arms embargo talking tough with Israel is inadequate. So is it all too little, too late? And in another change of direction, the Prime Minister has been listening to voters and his own disgruntled MPs on benefits. He signalled a rethink on one of Labour's most unpopular moves - cutting winter fuel payments for pensioners. But reforms of disability benefits are still on the cards so Nish heads to Westminster where disability activists gathered to lobby their MPs. With a major rebellion on the cards from Labour MPs, can Starmer be steered into a U-turn on this too? Employment minister Alison McGovern explains how she's going to get more young people into work and she has a message for Pod Save the UK's disillusioned Labour voters. And did you think Brexit bollocks was in the rearview mirror? Well sorry - this week the Brexit undead returned with nonsense we thought was safely consigned to the dustbin of history. Currents at the bottom of the ocean can be just as fickle as wind currents at the surface. They can turn, speed up or slow down, and even reverse course. And they can change in just days or even hours. That's the conclusion of the most detailed study of sea-floor currents to date. Researchers anchored 34 instrument packages across a thousand-square-mile region off the coast of Mozambique, at the southeastern corner of Africa. The instruments monitored the currents for four years. The study took place on the continental slope, at depths of up to a mile and a half. The slope is steep, and sharp canyons notch into it. Sediments tumble down the slope and through the canyons. At the bottom of the slope, the currents generally flow from south to north. And in the canyons, they generally flow downhill. Speeds range from about a half to one-and-a-half miles per hour. But researchers found a lot of variation. The speed changes, and so does the direction. Currents can even reverse direction—even in the canyons, where they sometimes flow uphill. Some of the changes are related to the tides or to passing storms or eddies. And others are related to the seasons, so they play out over days or weeks. The researchers say a better understanding of sea-floor currents can tell them more about where ocean sediments come from. That can help them better understand changes in climate, the sources of pollution, and more—swirling along at the bottom of the sea.

Changing course, even if your course "seems" great, can be stressful. In this episode, Dr. Parker "rambles" with Lon Stroschein - coach, life guide, and reformed c-suite exec.
