lizzie velasquez is a motivational speaker, youtuber, author, and activist, who went viral when she used her platform to ask her audience how they define themselves. in this episode, she sits down with jeremy to discuss the highs and lows of her career, her struggles with loneliness and isolation, and how she found her way back after hitting rock bottom.
Lizzie Velasquez was born with a rare syndrome that makes it impossible for her to gain weight. As a result, even though Lizzie is an adult, she has never weighed more than 65 pounds. A number of years ago, a terrible cyber bully posted a video on Youtube titled “World's Ugliest Woman” and the video was about Lizzie. Not only was this a horrible, horrible thing to do, but unfortunately the video went viral so millions of people saw Lizzie in the “World's Ugliest Woman” video and the comments were even worse. When Lizzie discovered the video online, she was completely devastated. In today's episode, Eva shares the powerful decision that Lizzie made in weeks and months after the video was posted so that this nightmarish experience did not destroy her life. Quite the opposite, Lizzie now believes that the video being posted was one of the best things that ever happened to her. Eva shares how Lizzie was able to come to such a inspiring decision, and how this choice has impacted the lives of so many others who struggle with self-esteem or have been the victims of bullying. Thank you Lizzie for inspiring so many. You are beautiful inside and out! For our show notes, visit DreamBigPodcast.com/267

Have you ever heard the expression when life gives you lemons, make lemonade? Few people truly embody this concept like Lizzie Velasquez does, who is an ordinary woman standing for something extraordinary: love, acceptance, and peace. Lizzie is a uniquely petite powerhouse that weighs in at 65 pounds because she, and only 2 other people in the world, suffer from a rare syndrome that prevents her body from storing fat. In a pivotal moment of cyberbullying, where she was called the ugliest woman on the internet in a youtube video that went viral, she decided to stand up for herself, in the most loving and peaceful way, and show the bullies that they are better than that. Fast forward several years, and she is a 4-time author, college graduate and global motivational speaker, that has graced the stage at well over 1,000 events and appeared on major TV networks like The Today Show, The View, Nightline, National Geographic and on Katie Couric to name a few. In addition to doing a Ted talk titled "What defines you?" which has been viewed by tens of millions, and resonated across the globe, she was featured in a deeply touching documentary called Brave Heart. Tune in to hear some of Lizzie's extraordinary life lessons and journey: Get a sense for her off the charts leadership How she became an agent for change How she stood for global growth and empowerment How she chose to counteract hate with love and what resulted from that What it takes to stand up for something bigger than yourself Finding courage in your darkest moments Incredible life lessons Connect with Lizzie Velasquez: Youtube Instagram Twitter TED Talk * * * Full Transcription: Lizzie Velasquez: I had to realize that I had been waiting for this answer my whole life, and I was 25 years old at the time. When you are so used to being defined as a question mark and then in one conversation that question mark that you’ve had for all these years is now just a period at the end of a sentence, how do you adjust to that? Tanya: That’s Elizabeth (Lizzie) Velasquez Velasquez, a uniquely petite powerhouse that weighs in at 65 pounds because she and only 2 other people in the world that we know of have a rare syndrome that prevents her body from storing fat. In a pivotal moment of cyberbullying where she was called the ugliest woman on the internet in a YouTube video that went viral, she decided to stand up for herself, and in the most loving and peaceful way, show the bullies that they are wrong about her. Fast forward several years, and she’s a four-time author, college graduate, global motivational speaker that’s graced the stage at over 1,000+ events and appeared on major TV networks like The Today Show, The View, Nightline, National Geographic, and on Katie Couric, just to name a few. In addition to doing a TED Talk titled “What Defines You,” which has been viewed by tens of millions of people and resonated across the globe, she was featured in a deeply touching documentary called Brave Heart. Lizzie Velasquez, what were you like as a child? Lizzie Velasquez: I was a really fun child looking back. I mean, obviously, I don’t remember everything, but I think I was really adventurous. I was very bossy. I can remember being bossy, and I’ve seen home videos that prove how bossy I was. I think I just have the same personality that I do now but just sounding more like a little tiny mouse. Tanya: That’s amazing. The bossiness definitely served you well. This is interesting. You were born six weeks prematurely, and you weighed in at 2 pounds, 10 ounces, which is tiny. Obviously, you wouldn’t remember this, but what did your parents tell you about that experience? Lizzie Velasquez: What they told me was that my mom had went in, and they did an ultrasound and realized that I had stopped growing and were told that they needed to have the emergency C-section. When I came out,
How do you handle situations that feel like massive setbacks? How do you react when you’re told, “it can’t be done,” "you’re not good enough," or "you’re destined to be a failure?" William Hung has received that harsh feedback many times. The most memorable was when he was laughed off the stage by American Idol judges for his rendition of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs”. Those that laughed, judged + critiqued missed what was actually happening: the power of an individual believing in his dreams. Today's conversation is truly heart-warming. William shares about taking chances, the courage to fail forward, and rising above cynics to become a champion by choice and smiling every step of the way. SHOW NOTES: William’s mother was very supportive + encouraged him to do his best in a school. During high school, William excelled in math and science but struggled academically while studying civil engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. William won a talent show at UC Berkeley singing Ricky Martin’s "She Bangs", giving him the confidence to audition for American Idol days later. Recalling the 2004 American Idol audition, William knew he wouldn’t advance to the next round because of Randy Jackson’s immediate reaction. “I already gave my best. I have no regrets at all.”: William’s response after Simon Cowell’s comment, “You can’t sing. You can’t dance. What do you want me to say?” The primary motivations for continuing with his singing career was not money but defending who he is and counteract others making things up about him. William remembers watching other auditions from his season and seeing contestants getting so angry they’d throw water bottles. He understood that the judges were just playing their roles + doing their job and it was no reason to get upset. During a UC Berkeley volleyball game, a record company presented William a $25,000 check to record a record album. It went on to hit #1 on the independent charts. “It doesn’t matter if you have the most talent. It matters if you can bring happiness with your entertainment.” “You are already unique. You are already special. Keep believing in that truth. Do not give up and you will succeed.” “I’m infamous, and some people think, a joke. That doesn’t make me feel good because I am a genuine person. I don’t let it get to me because I am who I am.” “It’s not what they say. It’s what you choose to hear.” “Looking back on my American Idol experience, I realize Randy was smiling. Paula was smiling. Even Simon was smiling. I realize when people saw me, I freed them to smile.” Today, William is a professional motivational speaker + hopes his audiences choose to be happy in their lives “I don’t feel the need to justify my value.” Watch William Hung’s American Idol audition here. If you enjoyed hearing William Hung's story, you'll love my conversation with Lizzie Velasquez. Tapping into Wealth by Margaret Lynch. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? I still have that kid in me. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? My wallet. I’m very practical! You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Ricky Martin. My first question would be, “What kind of impact do you want your music to make on others?” What is the best advice you’ve ever received? The only way you can fail is if you give up. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Find a true talent instead of randomly putting yourself out there on American Idol. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Live your best life and have no regrets. *** Did you enjoy today's episode? Lizzie Velasquez was cruelly dubbed "The Ugliest Woman in the World" on a viral YouTube video over ten years ago. She was born with an extremely rare congenital disease called Marfanoid–progeroid–lipodystrophy syndrome that, among other symptoms, prevents her from accumulating body fat and gaining weight. Out of that horrific YouTube incident, rose a fire and a desire in Lizzie to use her talents to become successful, motivate others and show what it means to be kind. Her 2013 inspiring TedX talk, "How Do You Define Yourself" has over 4 million views. Her documentary, A Brave Heart, is a must-watch for everyone -especially those with tweens and teenagers. Her paperback book, Dare to Be Kind, is out now. Enjoy the episode with Lizzie. From celebrities, musicians, actors, and influencers who are pretty well known themselves, Hispanicize 2016 was the gathering place for Latinos in the U.S. earlier this month. They were there to connect and network with one another, as well as what founder Manny Ruiz might argue was the primary reason for #Hispz16, to make an impact. We were in Miami for the full week of both the first inaugural DiMe Summit, which took place one day prior to Hispanicize, and for the seventh annual Hispanicize 2016 event. The week was definitely action-packed and thought provoking. So much so, that we are dedicating an entire episode to all things Hispanicize. Tune in to hear directly from founder Manny Ruiz about the importance of Latinos uniting as one community; a very inspirational keynote speech by Texas's own Lizzie Velasquez, and her parents; as well as a brief excerpt from Vine superstar, Lele Pons on what it means to be a part of a global social community. And we'll even reveal the official dates for Hispanicize 2017! Want more about Hispanicize? Read the following links from Juan of Words and SandraSays.
