Send us a textMarijuana in large part accelerated Fairfax criminal lawyer Jonathan Katz's transition from working at a corporate law firm to becoming a criminal defense lawyer many years ago. Jon Katz one day read about a federal prosecutor's issuance of a subpoena for High Times Magazine's advertiser records. Jon figured that the prosecutor was going after customers of hydroponic indoor marijuana growers. In protest, Jon took out a subscription to High Times, and told the same by letter to the then-federal attorney general and High Times. As a result of that subscription, Jon learned about criminal defense lawyer Don Fiedler, who was then national director of NORML, who helped Jon steer his path towards criminal defense. In rapid order, Jon joined the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and met its then-executive director Keith Stroup. the founder of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), which is devoted to marijuana consumers, rather than to manufacturers and sellers. Jon had previously read the authorized NORML biography High in America, and has been fascinated by Keith's story. Keith has for many years been back with NORML, where he is current legal counsel. The story of marijuana legalization and decriminalization provides strong lessons for criminal defense lawyers and their clients, about perseverance, team building and reversing roles. Marijuana remains criminalized at the federal level, but its odor is no longer a basis under Virginia law for a police search, and possession of designated amounts is no longer an offense in Virginia, which still needs legalized retail sales beyond medicinal sales. Many marijuana reformers have worked tirelessly and creatively over the decades to get us to where we are now. The team building involved in obtaining marijuana reform goes well beyond so-called political progressives. The reversing roles looks at what makes politicians and other policymakers tick for no longer demonizing marijuana. On this episode of Beat the Prosecution, Jon welcomes Keith Stroup and NORML political director Morgan Fox, for an eye-opening look at how far marijuana reform has come and what still needs to be done. Jon believes strongly in decriminalizing all drugs, as well. For more information about NORML and how to join and donate to the group, visit NORML.org. How's it growing folks? Welcome back to Here Weed Go! I'm your Host Eddie Celaya, and I'm back to bring you some of the hardest hitting, relevant and fun conversations and interviews centered around cannabis, the country's fastest growing cash crop. In this episode, I have a very special guest: Hirsh Jain, the Founder of Ananda Strategy, a consultancy that advises various cannabis businesses, brands and others in the industry across North America and Western Europe. Hirsh also wears some other hats woth mentioning: he is the Vice Chair of the California Cannabis Chamber of Commerce and on the Board of Directors of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) in California. Because he has such a diverse background, this episode hits on nearly every big story happening in cannabis at the state level right now: from the state of California's precarious recreational market, to what smaller states like New Mexico, Missouri and others can teach more established markets and others poised to make the recreational leap (like Ohio just voted to do!) Of course, there's also huge things happening at the national level, and our discussion attempts to shed some light and clear the smoke around what's happening in D.C. when it comes to rescheduling cannabis from schedule 1 to 3 and if congress will ever get its act together and clear up SAFER banking and other issues they helped create. But our conversation begins with a little bit of the personal, with Hirsh recounting what sort of impact his first time trying cannabis had on him… MORE INFO More on Hirsh Jain: https://twitter.com/anandastrategy More on Ananda Strategy: https://anandastrategy.com/ For more Here Weed Go! content, including links to social media and TucsonMarijuanaGuide.com: https://linktr.ee/hereweedgo See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

DEA Destroyed a LOT of Cannabis in 2022 - Cannabis Legalization News May, 2023 The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported that they confiscated over 5.7 million marijuana plants in 2022, which is a significant hike in comparison to the years prior that saw a decline in numbers due to legalization at the state level. The figures were made available via their Domestic Cannabis Eradication/Suppression Program (DCE/SP) report released earlier this year. This marks the highest seizure rate since 2011, despite the fact that arrests related to cannabis have been dropping. Get in touch with us:

Marijuana was integral to the evolving culture wars of the 1970s, with long criminal sentences meted out to some while others flouted the law with alacrity. No one was more central to the battles over marijuana policy than Keith Stroup, who founded the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) in 1970 and directed the organization for most of the decade. His allies spanned the spectrum of respectability from Harvard professors and former high level government officials to Gonzo journalist Hunter Thompson, Yippie activist Abbie Hoffman, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and assorted marijuana smugglers, most notably Tom Forcade, who started High Times magazine. We talked about President Richard Nixon's efforts to block marijuana law reform and President Jimmy Carter's support for decriminalization. Eleven states decriminalized marijuana during the mid-1970s but the momentum faded rapidly as the decade neared completion. Most fascinating to me were Keith's reflections on his own activism in an era that preceded my own engagement in drug policy reform activism beginning in 1988.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Eddy Lepp is on the ‘Mount Rushmore' of legalization pioneers. If you are one of the many who enjoy recreational marijuana in 17 U.S. states and medical marijuana in 37 American states, then you owe a huge debt of gratitude to an iconic figure in the movement, Eddy Lepp. Despite having a body now riddled with the cancer he has fought, Mr. Lepp (joined by his wife Sandra) speaks candidly with our correspondent Rich Walcoff in what may be his last interview. He tells the heroic journey he went through that began with helping someone in need by providing them with medicinal marijuana. This led to a vast grow in response to the need and demand of those around him. This also led to his arrest and incarceration with a 10-year sentence. Although he was offered no jail time in return for turning in his buddies, Eddy Lepp chose instead to serve almost 9 years of his sentence. Nonetheless, conviction by the state could not match the convictions of a true pioneer who helped pave the way for the legalization we see today. The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) called him a ‘marijuana martyr'. Numerous law enforcement figures, including those on the prosecution side, now lament the treatment that Mr. Lepp received. In the end, Eddy Lepp's dedication and determination was one of the keys that turned the legal battle of legalization in a new direction.Respect.Find more at; https://w420radionetwork.com/s3-e12-consumer-evolution-cannabis-for-seniors-legalization-pioneer-eddy-lepp-equality-cannabis-reform/

Andrew DeAngelo Talks about Cannabis Industry, Challenges, Advances, and his New Playboy Column. Playboy, as an early advocate for cannabis rights, supported the National Organization for the Regulation of Marijuana Laws (NORML) for years. Playboy writers consistently produced authoritative articles about the failed war on drugs, benefits of weed, and the wisdom of its legalization. Playboy Foundation’s annual donation of $100,000 to NORML for a full decade launched the advocacy group - under the leadership of Keith Stroup - to become the nation’s leader in the fight against marijuana prohibition and advocacy for just laws and the fair treatment of cannabis users. Playboy’s mission has not changed from its original role that began over six decades ago.
