Today's guest is Dr David Meltzer David Meltzer, OD is a US Army veteran of the Iraq War and an optometrist at Salus University in Philadelphia. David Melter has literally looked into the eyes of killers and lived to tell the story. David is a native of Rockville, Maryland. After spending the better part of his high school days skipping school and getting bad grades, he was rejected form the University of Maryland. So, at 17 years old, on a whim, David decided to join the Army, where he was assigned to a healthcare unit. After his army training, attending optometry school and Hahnemann University, David found himself being shipped off to Iraq as part of a surgical team attached to the US Army's 1st Armored Division. Being one of only a few eye doctors early in the Iraq war, David frequently got calls to treat not only injured members of the US military, but high value prisoners after they were captured and needed medical care. David treated multiple members of the infamous Iraqi “deck of cards”, including none other than the Ace of Spades himself - Saddam Hussain. David also treated Saddam's top general “Chemical” Ali and the Iraq's Foreign Minister and chief propagandist Tariq Aziz. David shares some fascinating stories of what it was like to literally look into the eyes of killers. David describes what happened when “Chemical” Ali, known for using chemical weapons against the Kurdish people, came face to face in a hallway with a Kurdish translator, who was working with the American forces, whose entire family was killed in those attack David also tells us about the time he was called to a prison to treat Saddam Hussain only a few days after he was captured. After the war, David tells stories of the multiple leaders at he was called to treat during his time at Walter Reid Hospital, including the then Vice President Joe Biden. David and I also discuss his time treating at the US Military Academy at West Point how he started the sports vision program there for the cadets David and I also discuss how he got connected tohttps://sportsvision.nyc/ ( Dr Dan Laby )- a thought leader in the field of vision - and how that collaboration has led to David becoming the Spring Training eye doctor to multiple major league sports teams like the Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs. We end our chat with how David got involved with the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team and how he plays ice hockey on an injured warriors hockey team that takes the ice vs. NHL legends like John LeClair, Mark Howe, Danny Brier and Kjell Sameulson. We wrap things with David's thoughts on why today's high school students could benefits from that military services can provide today's college age students. So … Thank you for listening. Episode 22 of the Pro Hockey Alumni podcast features the personable Jordy Douglas, a WHA and NHL pro, who scored 33 goals with the Hartford Whalers in 1979-80. After a great junior career with the Flin Flon Bombers, Jordy elected to sign with the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association in 1978. With the Whalers, he teamed with hockey legends like Johnny McKenzie, Davey Keon and Gordie Howe as he learned the ropes of playing big league hockey. Jordy scored a goal in his first WHA game and really found his groove in the post-season. As a result of this strong performance, he joined Mark Howe as the only two protected Whalers skaters for the 1979 NHL Expansion Draft. With the legendary Keon as his centerman in 1979, Jordy established himself as a legitimate NHL scoring threat. A highlite was a four-goal game vs. the eventual Stanley Cup Champion NY Islanders. Unfortunately in game 77 of that season, Douglas suffered a broken collarbone, an event that began a cycle of serious injuries that would plague him for the rest of his career. He'd later play for the Minnesota North Stars and Winnipeg Jets and conclude his career with a prolific two-year stay in Finland. Upon retirement, Jordy found significant business success teaming with ex-NY Ranger Ted Irvine in the financial management industry. Jordy is articulate, funny and an all-around good guy and you'll enjoy his perspective on his days in hockey and beyond. On show #5, Justin talks hockey and life with Philadelphia Flyer great Mark Howe! Mark is one of only four Flyers to be inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame and his #2 hangs from the rafters. But what Mark Howe was as a player is second to who Mark Howe is as a person. That is the ultimate tribute to the people who raised him, Gordie and Coleen Howe. Listen as Mark reminisces about his career, speaks warmly about his legendary mom and dad and explains to us how Gordie’s biggest contribution to this world may not have been on the ice, but in the area of medicine! Mark Steven Howe (born May 28, 1955) is a retired American professional ice hockey left winger and later defenseman who played sixteen seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) and six seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA). He is currently serving the Director of Pro Scouting for the Detroit Red Wings.[1] He is the son of Gordie and Colleen Howe, younger brother of Marty Howe, and nephew of Vic Howe. Despite the enormous shadow cast by his father and splitting time between two leagues, Howe shone as one of the best two-way NHL defensemen of the 1980s, being a three-time runner-up for the Norris Trophy and making the Stanley Cup finals three times as a player. He is a member of both the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and the Hockey Hall of Fame in to which he was inducted in 2011.[2] The Howe family received the Wayne Gretzky International Award in 2000, for major contributions to the growth and advancement of hockey in the United States.
