Alexis was a typical 11-year-old. She loved musical theater and Webkinz. But when she started using Instagram, her normal pre-teen curiosities triggered the social media app to flood her feed with content about anorexia and how to hide eating disorders from your parents. Over the next few years, Alexis' mental health deteriorated so much that she had to be hospitalized. Some families aren't so lucky. Teen suicide rates have skyrocketed since 2007, and some research has begun to correlate that with the rise of algorithmic, for-profit social media. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have become central to teenagers social lives, and it's probably not an accident. Today, Alexis Spence has made a full recovery from her eating disorder, and with her mom Kathleen, has become an advocate for social media reform, especially through legal action. Alli and Lindsey talk with them, along with their lawyer, Matt Bergman, who co-founded the Social Media Victims Law Center. When suing Meta on behalf of families, his legal approach comes from product liability: If tech companies know their products are addictive and harmful to children and choose not to address that, they should be held accountable. That has since led him to perform all across the country and on several TV shows such as Gotham Comedy Live, Comedy Central Live and star in A Little Bit Balder Now, his own special for the popular Dry Bar Comedy online network.  He has also put out several albums including his latest release, 2022's Between You and I and can be heard in regular rotation on Sirius/XM satellite radio. On this episode (out on all major platforms on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022), Tabari and Matt chat about their love of traveling to watch sports, food, gambling, Buffalo, Washington, D.C., the Midwest ... Washington DC-based comedian Matt Bergman (DryBar, Comedy Central) proves you CAN laugh at the obituaries by framing them in a way that gets the audience to discover the nuance in the things we do and say about people after they die. There is a push and pull between fear and acceptance that exists when discussing death, but when it's discussed within a non-threatening context, a conversation about death can turn lighthearted and hilarious. We also talk about: -Steve's new credit. -Approbation Constante; Matt's album title. -Matt's bit proving you CAN laugh at the obituaries. -Why older people enjoy reading the obituaries so much. -Honest obituaries. -Adding a fun framework to make a dark premise more approachable. -Print newspaper. -The impersonal cliches of most obituaries. -When an obituary doesn't match the reality. -Writing our own obituaries. -The perfect age to die. -Finding humor in the word ‘obituary' itself. -The word ‘slaughter' -The afterlife. -Dying while performing. - Putting a memorial in the spot where someone dies vs. where they loved going. -Diving deeper into fears and what makes us uncomfortable instead of avoiding it. -Being buried alive. Back at it this Monday Morning here on Morning Bull and the four of us were back together again, with Chris joining us after her trip to central Florida! We were also visited on the phone by local comic great Matt Bergman to talk about an event taking place to benefit Music Is Art; ZOOM calls and bloopers came up with a lot in the news lately. Finally, we had Judd Nelson, Breakfast Club and St. Elmos Fire star called us to talk what hes been up to recently. Robs Did You Know took place, as did the TrendZone featuring some great sound from around the world! Judd Nelson from the Breakfast Club, St Elmos Fire and many other 'coming of age' classics, called us in the middle of the show to talk about his latest work on a very disturbing LMN movie. He also took some of our questions regarding his memories of working on the classics we mentioned, and many others; and he told us some cool behind the scene anecdotes about his career.  There were several times and instances that came up today regarding ZOOM bloopers and mistakes that we've either witnessed or heard about due to their going viral. We had plent of sound of recent examples and even had a ZOOM sin committed on our own show...try to guess who it was! Matt Bergman is a local comedian gone big time who has some friendly ties to our show! He told us about an event hes part of happening tonight on MusicIsArt.org at 7P to benefit MIA. He also had some laughs with us and commiserated with Rob about the current, struggling state of live comedy.  We talked with Chris throughout the show about her trip to Florida and the differences between NYS and Florida State. She told us about the weather, her different experiences and ways she was able to enjoy her vacation. There were some startling comparisons and differences between what we know here and what she found Florida to be like last week.  Bull tried to get an appointment for a vaccine, and has been for weeks, but today we revealed audio of the disasterous phone call/call back he received over the weekend. It was pretty funny, but in reality, its quite a revelation of the process and situation were in.  ONLY AVAILABLE on the Morning Bull Podcast! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sounds Like Liberty

Today we have an interview but first we check out the message Blueprint of the Fall by Strung Out. http://bit.ly/2HqcQmL Nicky’s pick is The Sleepwalk Transmissions by We Never Learned To Live out of Brighton, UK. His Comments: The vocals manage to waffle between naked aggression and smoldering earnestness. No complaints about the accent peaking through every now and again either. Musically it’s a little more progressive than earlier generations of the style with plenty of funky timing bits and some great failures to resolve. My one beef is that while no single song feels like filler the album is a bit long...maybe I’m just old and my angst...not so deep anymore.http://weneverlearnedtolive.bandcamp.com/album/the-sleepwalk-transmissions I’ve picked Swedish indie band Agent Bla with Morning Thoughts. The guitars on the upbeat songs have that classic almost surf rock tone that makes me think of the summer.  The vocals are like Chrissie Hynde run through a dream pop vocal filter. They really add a bit of magic. Mellow but always moving.
