In this episode of Business of Drinks, we're diving into a new-to-world tequila product that's shaking up the industry: Quintaliza, the world's first coffee-aged tequila. Founder and CEO Michael Winters joins us to discuss how he took an unconventional idea — aging tequila in coffee-seasoned barrels — and turned it into a fast-growing brand that's gaining traction with both consumers and industry insiders.Michael isn't just another spirits industry veteran launching an agave brand — he's a serial entrepreneur who built Quintaliza from the ground up, first in his own kitchen and then with a world-class distillery in Jalisco. The brand has already won Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America's “Brand Battle” competition in 2024, and with a deep-not-wide distribution strategy, it's set to sell 12,000 bottles in 2025 across four key markets: Florida, New Jersey, Tennessee, and South Carolina. In this episode, Michael shares:- The origins of Quintaliza – How his background in restaurants, branding, and coffee shops led to the creation of the world's first coffee-aged tequila.- Building a brand from scratch – Why he didn't take the easy route of private labeling and instead developed a proprietary aging process in ex-bourbon and coffee-seasoned barrels.- Going deep, not wide – Why he turned down multi-state distribution deals in favor of a strategic approach focused on building strong relationships in a few key markets.- Winning over distributors and bartenders – The tactics he's using to build awareness and pull-through in a competitive spirits category.- The role of storytelling in brand-building – How Michael's authenticity and hands-on leadership help differentiate Quintaliza in a crowded tequila space.- Scaling smartly – Insights on when (and how) to expand without overextending resources or losing brand momentum.Last Call:The wine industry keeps saying “make wine more accessible” for younger consumers. But what if that's not what they want? Contributor Caroline Lamb brings on Eater's Southeast Regional Editor Henna Bakshi to discuss how private wine clubs in Atlanta are thriving with millennial members — who are paying up to $8K+ per year to join. https://www.swordandthescript.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/bab_027_michael_winters.jpg Many of the lessons Michael Winters applies to his small business, he learned in the Army. He and a buddy started researching what it take to open a landscaping business while he was still wearing the uniform. In fact, they started mowing lawns part-time, in off duty hours, to get things going. It wasn't easy, but then Mike says a lot of the things that helped him to be successful with a small business, are things he learned in the service – like an “insane” work ethic and organizational skills. His heart is to help people to walk through life knowing that "purposed people" exist for a reason and they succeed in what they do. We all have an inherent longing to make the world better, yet like many things in life we have failed to SEE WHAT or WHOM needs fixing in order for the world to actually get better. Culture tells us that we are basically good and that laws and science help us to become better people, but we have seen in history this isn't true. God has told us that we are all selfish and need to change our hearts over to Him in order to make a difference in the world.
Many people let their feelings decide their attitude, trust, and obedience to God. However, Jesus never marvelled at men and women of this type. Jesus marvelled at a man who's faith was independent of his feelings.

My guest on episode 56 is Sajin Ka, head coffee roaster at White Heron Tea and Coffee, singer in the group Vesper and the choir Amare Cantare, and sometime model for photographer Michael Winters. Sajin and I discussed the disappointment of seeing Bon Iver live and the overall shitshow of the Boston Calling music festival, embracing but not bracing your tooth gap, growing up as a weird van gypsy, a serendipitous gas mask, magic showers ... and chicken shit bingo - among other things. Thanks for listening. Enjoy!
So excited to introduce Michael Winters! Michael is a committed and passionate high school councilor, an extremely talented photographer and just a great guy that I'm happy this podcast brought into my life and i think you will be too! Enjoy the show… All music by Nick Filth
The life of a district superintendent isn’t easy. You have to juggle a lot, from managing big of groups of administrators and teachers, to pushing a district forward. So, what is the hardest part of a superintendent's job, and is it related to technology? In a series of interviews that EdSurge conducted at the ISTE conference in late June, EdSurge podcasters Mary Jo Madda and Michael Winters had the opportunity to interview Dr. Greg Goins, superintendent of Frankfort Community Unit School District 168 in Illinois. The man has made some pretty strong movements with edtech in his district, and EdSurge wanted to get to know his methods. Does Goins think Smartboards are effective? What are the edtech products he’s tired of hearing about? Listen to this episode to find the answers to those questions and more.
With Amazon making its first big education platform debut in years, we were wondering: how are other blue chip companies—Microsoft, Apple, Google—reacting to this news? While at ISTE, Mary Jo and former EdSurge podcaster Michael Winters hosted an in-person taping of the EdSurge On Air podcast with a live audience and two Google leaders, Jonathan Rochelle and Jaime Casap. Rochelle and Casap both have a long history with the Google for Education team. Casap is a Google Education evangelist, and Rochelle is a Google Education Product Manager, not to mention a co-founder of Google Drive. Between the two of them, they have more than 20 years of experience with the search company. We asked both Casap and Rochelle about their thoughts on Amazon Inspire, where Google Education plans to grow, and why conferences seem so homogenous. By the way, in each of our interviews, we decided to play a little game. Since edtech buzzwords drive us crazy, we had a secret word that the interviewees didn’t know about, and if they said it out loud, our audience hit the buzzer. See if you can hear when it gets said during this interview!

This week on the podcast, Mary Jo Madda and Michael Winters tackle two big questions from this weeks' news. First, what exactly is happening over at AltSchools? It raised $100M this week, but where does all of that money go? We discuss AltSchool's model and hear from the school's founder about its future. Second, Google Classroom celebrates its first birthday this week. But is the wide use of Google Classroom a good thing? Sure it's a high quality - and free - tool, but could that actually be a risk for teachers using it?
