Corals are the gems of the oceans, creating beautiful colors and shapes that form our reefs while serving many vital functions for life on this planet. With 25-40% already lost, the worldwide coral population faces incredible danger from climate change and other threats. But there is hope. On this week's episode, Hilary and I talk with Dr. David E. Vaughan, an esteemed marine biologist and author of the new book The Secret Life of Corals: Sex, War, and Rocks that Don't Roll.Dr. Vaughan has held aquaculture research and development positions for over 45 years. He is best known for developing the innovative restoration technique of “micro-fragmentation, which can speed up coral growth by 25 times by breaking them into tiny little pieces. He is focused on making this innovative process a scalable tool for reef restoration as the Founder of Plant a Million Corals. As you'll hear in this conversation, David brings great clarity and joy when talking about corals and why they are so important.Links:Book: The Secret Life of Corals: Sex, War and Rocks That Don't RollWebsite: Plant A Million CoralsDr. David E. “Young people might think they canʻt get a job in marine conservation, but they CAN. Now is the time.” Dr. David Vaughan is a coral restoration expert, founder of Plant a Million Corals, and passionate conservationist. He is responsible for developing coral micro-fragmentation by accident, which is an extremely effective coral restoration technique that is widely used today (including in Hawaiʻi). He is on the pursuit to plant coral reefs at scale and bring coral restoration to the masses, and he just released his new book, Secret Life of Corals, to do just that. During our lovely conversation he shared his journey, thoughts on ocean conservation approaches, his opinion of social media, and his best advice for young people. This was such a lovely conversation, I immediately donated to his foundation afterwards. If you feel the same, I encourage you to support his work in some way, too. On this episode, April speaks with Mark Herschberg about the power of sharing your expertise through writing a book and his new book The Career Toolkit. Chapter synopsis and table of contents can be found at https://www.thecareertoolkitbook.com/synopsis. To purchase The Career Toolkit on Amazon visit https://amzn.to/3aIpu2U. Drawing on nearly twenty years of teaching at MIT's “career success accelerator” program and a career spanning half a dozen industries, Mark distills the key skills for a twenty-first-century career into The Career Toolkit, Essential Skills for Success That No One Taught You. Section one, Career, lays out a process for constructing an actionable career plan, then guides the reader to success both in interviews and on the job to advance along the career plan. Section two, Leadership and Management, focuses on the fundamentals of managing and leading, applicable to managers and individual contributors alike. It details the essentials of a high-performing team, how to foster a learning organization, how to reduce meetings by making them more effective, and much more. Unlike typical management books, these tools apply no matter what project management approach an organization uses. Section three, Interpersonal Dynamics, describes how to successfully negotiate, efficiently build a network, and effectively communicate with people from any background. A final chapter on ethics in the workplace provides guidance through common challenges every employee is sure to face at some point. The importance of these skills is well established, yet they are rarely taught in school or corporate training, leaving most people to learn only from experience. The Career Toolkit, Essential Skills for Success That No One Taught You fills these gaps. Mark is the author of The Career Toolkit, Essential Skills for Success That No One Taught You.
