In today's episode of the Brains Byte Back podcast, we speak with Mark Herschberg, Creator of Brain Bump, an app that helps you retain what you read and hear, and an MIT Instructor. To kick off the show, Sam opens up about how he was interested in Herschberg's initial message to him, where he advocated that “we invest time reading and listening but it's inefficient. This is because where we read information isn't where we need information.” On this topic, Herschberg explains in greater detail how there is a learning disconnect that often occurs when people consume information in one context but need to apply it in another.  He then goes on to highlight the challenge of remembering valuable information from books or podcasts when it's needed most.  To address this issue, Herschberg created Brain Bump, an app that provides just-in-time information access. It condenses key ideas from books, blogs, podcasts, classes, and talks into concise tip cards.  Users can easily search for specific content tags, making it convenient to retrieve relevant information when needed. The app also sends daily notifications at a user's preferred time, serving as a reminder of key concepts. Herschberg also goes on to clarify the difference between Brain Bump and book summary apps like Blinkist, advocating that while Blinkist offers simplified summaries of books, Brain Bump aims to complement various types of content, helping users better retain the information they have already consumed. Additionally, for the content creators in the audience, Herschberg shares tips on how you can produce work that sticks in the memories of your audience.  And finally, Herschberg talks about one of his latest articles “ChatGPT is Just a Calculator . . . Crossed with a Nuclear Reactor” and shares his predictions of what we can see develop from this technology, alongside what technology currently excites him. Links

I'd like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional unceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People. How often have you met a new hire and asked yourself, “Who hired this person, and why?”Well, I have news for you, as the leader, this will be you. You will hire people that won't work out, and your team will question how and why you chose this person. But, most often, it's not your fault because new leaders very rarely, if ever, receive any type of training or education to select new hires. And so, in this episode, you'll hear from Mark Herschberg, chief technology officer, MIT instructor, author of The Career Toolkit: Essential Skills That No One Taught You, and creator of the Brain Bump app, who will delve into hiring methods to assess potential candidates, identifying their strengths and weaknesses to ensure the strongest team possible. Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front is humbled to have been named #7 in the Top 20 for Best Canadian Leadership-themed podcasts for 2023. Mark's Episode Links:1. https://www.linkedin.com/in/hershey/2. https://twitter.com/CareerToolkitBk3. https://www.facebook.com/TheCareerToolkitBook4. https://www.instagram.com/thecareertoolkit/5. https://www.instagram.com/CognoscoMedia6. https://www.facebook.com/cognoscomedia7. https://twitter.com/Cognoscomedia8. https://www.linkedin.com/company/cognosco-media/The Career Toolkit Website Links:1. https://www.thecareertoolkitbook.com2. https://www.thecareertoolkitbook.com/resources3. It markets an app it calls the “Brain Bump” – not a bump from a whack on the head but as a way to remember content one has read, watched or listened to.  With more than a dozen patents to his name, he has been teaching at MIT's Career Success Accelerator for 20 years in addition to building multiple startup companies as a CTO.  For more information: https://www.thecareertoolkitbook.com

Well, he's an MIT grad and current professor — so, clearly, Yes. And he's here to tell us a bit more about the problem, his research, and his several solutions. - - - [5:01] - “My writing process was a little chaotic — it was just a jumble of notes. But as it grew…” [8:14] - “Most nonfiction books are way too long. It's one idea that's about 40 pages, and then you beat it to death for another 150.” [11:39] - “The book is one part of a larger strategy for your business.” [16:44] - “The fundamental problem (with books) is that where you READ information isn't where you NEED information. … So how do we connect the two?” [19:12] - “Brain Bump is a cross between a book summary app, a flashcard app, and a daily affirmation app.” [23:18] - “This is PULL media, (not PUSH media). We are letting users PULL to them what's most relevant. It creates a better connection. And that builds your brand.” - - - You can follow along on Mark's mission(s) here: -If curious about the book: thecareertoolkit.com -If curious about the Brain Bump app: brainbumpapp.com -If interested in the future of media: Cognoscomedia.com

When did you learn important career-building skills like networking, finding mentors, interviewing, and finding great work opportunities? Most people didn't learn these skills in college or high school. We learned them when we had to - when we were searching for our first jobs or starting our first businesses. MIT alum and teacher Mark A. Herschberg saw this gap and decided to create a solution. His career success accelerator class teaches students the basic skills they need to navigate and prepare for building the careers they want. "Where you read information isn't where you need information."  - Mark Herschberg Do you ever find yourself consuming great content, but then struggling to find it later when you actually need it? If so, today's episode is for you! MIT instructor Mark Herschberg makes a return visit to the show to discuss his innovative new platform, Brain Bump. In this episode, you'll learn: - How powerful peer learning can be for your development - Why the content we all consume is rarely accessible in critical moments - How Brain Bump only sends the tips you want, when you request them; it never sends an unrequested notification - Bonus: you don't even have to open the app!   The challenge with traditional learning When we think about most of our knowledge, it has just been direct information transfer, such as when you learn the quadratic formula. It is very black and white and you know exactly where to use it. But the skills that we use as leaders, from leading people to communication, negotiation, team building – these are not cut and dry. There's no formula for leadership. Peer learning's edge over other learning styles Peer learning is not about memorizing formulas. It's about learning subtle skills that are often circumstantial. So by coming together as a group and having discussions, like I'm going to gain your perspective and you're going to get mine… that's how we learn. Ineffective learning The problem is two-fold. First, where you read information isn't where you need information. And the second is that you read a book or listen to a podcast episode, and then you forget it. I wanted to address it. As we age and gain new experiences, our brain changes and it becomes evident that we can't hold every piece of information and knowledge that we encounter at all times. More often, we only retain information that is immediately useful or relevant to our present needs. But, we also want to remember crucial information that we've read today at a time in the future when it is needed, right?   In this episode, CTPO, speaker, author, MIT instructor Mark Herschberg and I discuss this topic in more detail. As an author faced with the challenge of readers' recall and retention, Mark created an app called Brain Bump designed to help users remember information, data, and materials from books, blogs, podcasts, classes, talks, and other resources whenever they are needed. If you are in the business of investing, or in any business for that matter, you'll need access to as much information as you can to run your business efficiently and to have meaningful engagement with clients and investors. Listen until the end and you'll learn invaluable tips to protect yourself and your business from cyberattacks.   Key Points from This Episode: What makes 21st-century learning different? Why did Mark create the Brain Bump app? Why do most people not retain what they read? How does the technique of “spaced repetition” help retain information? The two ways when most people need information. Mark discusses the Brain Bump app and how it helps users access information when they need them. How can we use media channels more efficiently? Where can the Brain Bump app be downloaded? Mark talks about cybersecurity and the persistent threat of cyberattacks. Measures that companies, businesses, and individuals should take to protect against cyberattacks. Safety tips against bank fraud or wire fraud.   Tweetables: “We live in the most abundant time in human history with regard to sharing information, and sharing perspectives and thoughts.”  - Tyler Chesser   “Even when a reader reads a book, a business book, a self-help book, something with advice, say, wow, there's great advice here. And then you forget it two weeks later. You forget 90%-95% of it. That is a problem. And so there's a problem for the author and a problem for the reader.” - Mark Herschberg   “Media is traditionally linear. We listen to this episode, front to back, first to last. We read a book from first to last. We watch a TV show from start to finish. Exceptions are encyclopedias or dictionaries, you generally don't read that first page to last, you jump in, you get what you need, and you leave. More of our media will shift in this direction.” - Mark Herschberg   “By chopping up the content from an episode, from a book and putting it in this nonlinear order, we make it more relevant. It's like a "choose your own adventure" that you grab what is right for you.” - Mark Herschberg   “The teacher is who learns the most.” - Tyler Chesser   “For any company or individual, it's not a matter of “if” but “when” you run into a cybersecurity issue.” - Mark Herschberg “You will be attacked, you will be hacked. It's about being prepared and having your defenses there.” - Mark Herschberg   Links Mentioned: Brain Bump App The Career Toolkit  Mark Herschberg on LinkedIn Invest with CF Capital   About Mark Herschberg Mark Herschberg is the author of “The Career Toolkit: Essential Skills for Success That No One Taught You” and creator of the Brain Bump app. From tracking criminals and terrorists on the dark web to creating marketplaces and new authentication systems, Mark has spent his career launching and developing new ventures at startups and Fortune 500s and in academia, with over a dozen patents to his name. “Leadership isn't a single thing. It's a bunch of things together,” says Mark Herschberg, the co-founder and one of the principal developers of MIT's famed Career Accelerator Program. The program teaches future tech leaders the soft skills like communication, networking and negotiating that they don't teach in school but are crucial to success. Here Mark discusses the origins of the program as well as the most important aspects of communication and how those aspects all build on each other.  Mark discusses the importance of career planning, and dismantles the myth of the 20-something founder. A major part of Mark's 20s was spent as a champion ballroom dancer, and he gives a peak into that world here.  He discusses his app Brain Bump and how it relates to the evolving way that we utilize books. He discusses what sectors on the horizon make no sense to him and which he finds terrifying.  Quotes: “I recognized I was missing those skills. I had heard of them, but I was never formally taught. I didn't think I was very good at them. So I set out to train myself. And as I did so, I realized these are not just skills for entrepreneurs, for founders, for executives, these are skills for everyone down to even your summer interns.” (15:24-15:42 | Mark) “The most popular article I've written was one called ‘Leadership Is Not Atomic.” Because what does it mean to be a good leader? What you're probably going to be good at is communication skills. As a leader, you're going to have to bring together coalitions. That's negotiation skills. You probably need to be able to connect with other people, networking skills. Leadership isn't a single thing. Leadership is a bunch of things together.” (18:06-18:34 | Mark)  “You can learn leadership, networking, negotiating, it's all the skills that we think some people are just born with. Well, people are also born natural athletes or natural musicians. But just because they're natural at it doesn't mean the rest of us can't learn it, if we put the time in.” (52:12-52:27 | Mark)  Connect with Brendan Dell: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendandell/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BrendanDell Instagram: @thebrendandellTikTok: @brendandell39 Buy a copy of Brendan's Book, The 12 Immutable Laws of High-Impact Messaging: https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780578210926    Connect with Mark Herschberg:Thecareertoolkitbook.com cognoscomedia.comCheck out Mark Herschberg recommended books: Peopleware: Productive Projects and Teams by Tom DeMarco and Timothy Lister https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780321934116   The Charisma Myth by Olivia Fox Cabone  https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781469033075   Survival of the Savvy: High Integrity Political Tactics for Career and Company Success by Rick Brandon and Marty Selman https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780743262545   Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe to Billion Dollar Tech on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts!
