SEASON 10 The Learning Leader Daily Leadership Tips and Discussions Today's episode covers part 5 of “How understanding your team helps with achieving goals.” I will discuss how when you know the typical behaviors of your teammates, you can also understand how they respond to goals. I will be taking you through each of the four behavioral styles of the DISC Assessment, and the entire journey they go through in regards to goals. If you are unfamiliar with the DISC assessment and the four behavioral styles, I want to invite you to go back and listen to the last two weeks' episodes to learn more about each of the four behavioral styles; the D, I, S, and C. I use the DISC assessment with every client and team I work with and have found it to be a real game-changer for the entire team. Today, I am focusing on the C Behavioral Style and their journey through goals. I am a DISC Certified Trainer and Consultant and have worked with behavioral styles for over 20 years. SEASON 9 The 2024 Leader Daily Leadership Tips and Discussions There are many significant events that happen in a leader's career. Sometimes we pause and take notice; sometimes we don't. Experiencing the total eclipse on April 8th 2024 was what I would consider a significant event. It allowed me to pause and enjoy the astronomical event that is rare to see. I watched the eclipse with my wife and two youngest kids, and we were in awe. Sometimes as leaders we don't pause and recognize the significant events in our lives and the lives of our team members.  Season 9 is a little different. After a 2-month break (Dec 2023 – Jan 2024), Paul is focusing on not only giving tips about how to be a great leader, but also a leader who is respected, a leader who people want to follow, a leader who can confidently navigate their way through both personal and professional challenges, a leader who is not afraid to share their faith while living it out, a leader who knows his/her purpose and lives to fulfill that purpose every day, and a leader who has no regrets! How do we be more on purpose, and less on point and create learning with rigour but not rigidity? How do we elevate voice, choice and initiative knowing that as we do so we create more freedom and more responsibility? In this episode of our 10-part special series on Learner Agency we discuss how students bring agency to life. This is the ninth lesson for agency shared by global education expert Charles Leadbeater in conversation with educators from schools across South Australia. In our conversation we blend the conceptual with the concrete, exploring philosophy, practice and product and hear how schools have journeyed towards activating agency in their community. Brilliant South Australian teachers join us for our conversation today: Wendy Matear of Bethany Christian School, Sandra Barry of Endeavour College, and Sarah Lane of Scotch College. We discuss what purposeful learning looks like and how identity meets intent - when who we are powerfully intersects with what we want to achieve. As our educator colleagues share their learning journeys, both inner and outer, we discuss the connection between values and achievement, how they endure and evolve, and how if we connect purpose, commitment, and reflection we can create high agency learning experiences that lead to increased growth and mastery. This series is a special collaboration between The Learning Future and AISSA: The Association of Independent Schools of South Australia. Martinez walks through verse 4, explaining how the ones who have been repaired and restored by the Spirit of the Living God will affect the cities where they have been planted and restore the communities in their sphere of influence.

John counters with how over time, the average work hours in the USA have dropped from 75 hours a week in the 19th century, to an average of 35 hours per week, and how changes in industry and technology have become a slippery slope. Both of them wonder if all the extra screen time in the tech world is upping productivity. The conversation turns to work ethic, the importance of leadership and how essential it is to make sure employees are well taken care of, no matter what business they might be employed in.

This week's guest is Victoria Foster, who shares her transformational journey of listening to calling, discovering purpose and championing female leadership. Her path traverses an upbringing in Chicago, extensive travel and ‘global citizenship' and early career in global investment banking. Sometime into this successful profession she reached a critical juncture, when a courageous conversation with her future child led her to choose a different road, a new path, one that took her into international development and global innovation, and leads her to into the conversation with us today. What drives Victoria is how she can contribute to a more inclusive world. She is an executive coach, strategic advisor, and guide to senior women leaders, as well as men who want to take the lead in building more inclusive futures. She dedicates her life to “paying-it-forward” to other courageous leaders who dare to explore their un-lived potential and be FutureMakers.Today as Co-Founder & Chief Catalyst, Victoria leads FutureWomenX, committed to creating transformative impact on key issues, one of which is gender finance. She's led expeditions in New York, the African continent and Europe bringing international women in finance to work alongside entrepreneurs to bridge worlds and dive into the critical issues.Key messages from this conversation;- That you need a peer group who will hold you accountable to achieving your potential- That for many leaders, especially those with young children, the notion of ‘balance' is unhelpful. Try focusing on achieving flow between work and life, making the transitional periods as smooth as possible and the time on each side as productive as possible and can actually be generative for the other.- That in this age of radical disruption, we need leaders who are willing to confront that everything might need to change- To challenge yourself to make a shift and pursue your purpose, imagine a conversation with your future child. Would they want you to earn more or have more? Or to have made a choice that allows you to make a greater impact and do more good through your work.- Leaders cannot afford to be addicted to the want to want to change. Leaders need to want and are ready to do the change-work, to become the change.- To sustain ourselves as leaders, we all need reminders of what's important and what we are doing collectively to make the world better.- To be a great leader, you first need to go for it, get curious, and share what you're doing. To find out more about Victoria's work, you can message her via Linkedin (profile here) or explore the FutureWomenX website or enquire about joining the tribe here

In this episode, we examine Douglas McGregor’s most famous work, The Human Side of Enterprise, that proposed two “theories” encapsulating management assumptions about human behavior. His Theory X described the dominant thinking of the 1950s, where managers held a dim view of employees, who were assumed to be disinclined to work and had to be coerced into doing so. McGregor felt that Theory X led to adversarial relationships between managers and workers, resulting in poorer performance and an unhealthy environment. His Theory Y saw employees as wishing to be challenged and fulfilled if properly empowered and engaged. The book has become a staple of management literature. Numerous studies of organizations have confirmed the benefits of Theory Y assumptions serving as the foundation for performance appraisals, reward systems, working in teams, and building worker commitment to the organization. The Annotated Edition of the book, published in 2006, includes dozens of additional callouts and citations of research and vignettes of management experience, demonstrated the continued relevance of this master work.

Leadership's Edge

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 4, 2019 25:46

Visit http://ShannonGraham.com/contact if you are a highly committed leader who is ready for quantum leaps in your personal and professional growth. Let's talk.I truly believe that a major artificial intelligence event is right around the corner. And that's important; because as a leader, you should always be thinking at least 10 steps ahead. If you can understand AI and the implications of what that's going to mean for the future, you can begin to create plans. Many people have this belief that artificial intelligence is going to be a very negative experience. I want to get into the immediate implications of AI. So the one thing that's absolutely certain is that AI is going to replace millions of jobs, which means millions of people are going to be without a job.People would think that's not going to be good. Well, I would beg to differ. The reason for that is because the vast majority of jobs that are going to get replaced are jobs, frankly, that most people don't want. The reason why most people are unhappy in life is because they work at a job that they don't like. It makes total sense. You spend the majority of your time at your job, you spend the majority of your energy at your job, and if you're at a job that you don't like, then there's a lot of un-fulfillment that comes with that.I think that's going to completely revolutionize the plain field because it's going to force people to ask a question that they have not asked themselves yet: what do I want? The question taps into your creativity and your imagination. The challenge with potential is it only comes out when it must. And so what this event is going to do is it's going to force people to essentially become a better version of themselves because the crappy option is not going to be available to them anymore. The next jump in artificial intelligence will be technology that can help human beings bring their ideas to life more easily. 3D printing has absolutely changed the game and that is really just the tip of the iceberg. It is a metaphor for what technology will be able to give people. Technology will give people the ability to take their wildest, most creative ideas and bring them into reality in a very short amount of time. The next phase of AI's growth is the ability to help mankind understand themselves. The first way to think about that is what's called trans-humanism, which is humans and technology merging together. This is kind of similar to what Elon Musk is currently working on in terms of neuro-link: having technology integrate with the human body, having AI integrate with the human body. What if you could remember everything? What if you never got sick? What if the sky's the limit? The other side is simply that technology helps mankind better understand themselves. It is said that that God created man in his image and I have a theory that technology is going to help us understand ourselves in a way that I believe Alan Watts said, “What if man created God in his image so that he could better understand himself?” I truly believe that human beings have way more potential than they even realize. And the one thing that, no matter who I talk to always agrees with me on, is that human beings have way more potential than we think, regardless of what we've been able to achieve so far.The singularity is when AI goes quantum and essentially become self-aware and has the ability to grow itself by itself. And that's where people get a bit scared. Human beings by nature, love to control things. We love to control our reality. The idea that an ultimately intelligent piece of technology would be able to grow itself by itself gets a little scary because we wouldn't have control over it. But what I love to think about is that not that AI will become this evil entity that wants to enslave mankind. I believe that AI will advance so much that it will be able to see the potential of mankind and not see them as a nuisance.I want to wrap this all up in the context of leadership. As a leader, what's important to know is that technology is going to wipe out a lot of jobs and you should begin thinking about how to create more space in your organization for creativity and for innovation. However, a lot of those people that are out of a job are going to be very intelligent people that have the capacity to create exponential solutions and the ability to understand that technology is going to help us better understand ourselves. If you are a visionary leader who wants to quantum leap your impact and leave a legacy of achieving the impossible, I am here and the world is waiting. David Rohlander, author of the just released The CEO Code: Create a Great Company and Inspire People to Greatness With Practical Advice from an Experienced Executive, talks about leadership on the James Lowe Radio Show after hearing a story about General Dwight David Eisenhower demonstrating leadership with a clever analogy. Leaderhip is vital in any organization; whether a massive corporation, armed forces or a family. Filled with successful stories of mentoring executives and corporate personnel, the book offers a wealth of practical advice for professional and personal success. Broken down into three sections, Communication, Execution and Operation, The CEO Code contains a series of questions at the end of each chapter in Take Time to Reflect pages that consist of seven questions. Each of the three sections, or Parts, consists of five chapters. Part 1, Communication, is broken down into the following chapters: Trust, Respect, Understanding, Empathy and Resolutions. Chapters for Part II, Execution are Action, Repetition, Habits, Attitudes and Feelings while Part III, Operation, gets into deeper waters with Teams, Delegation, Systems, Accountability, and Rewards. At the outset of Execution, Rohlander states that the "Cycle of Success is a core concept within The CEO Code" as it "explores proven and practical formula for setting goals and how to structure them so they positive and enabling." Rohlander sets the tone in terms of leadership in Part III, Operation, by likening a well-functioning company to an orchestra. First you need "quality music, then each participant must be in the same place on the score; each player of an instrument must be able and willing to play his or her part. You are the conductor of the orchestra." David G. Rohlander is a professional speaker, mentor and executive coach. His passion is working with executives to build their own masterpiece personally and professionally. Flying 208 combat missions as a USAF fighter pilot gave him an appreciation for living with gusto. Then he earned an MBA in finance from California State University and spent nearly a decade with Merrill Lynch. Next he became an entrepreneur, built three companies and developed commercial and residential real estate. Along the way he taught at several universities. Rohlander has coached partners for Ernst & Young, trained sales teams with Honeywell, and mentored hundreds of CEOs and executives in a wide range of industries. In addition to earning his MBA in finance, Rohlander studied management with Peter Drucker at Claremont Graduate University.
