In this season, it's not about external validation.” Dr. Darnyelle Jervey Harmon When I first learned of the Inc 5000 in 2021 it was as businesses were being recognized for their company's growth in the previous three years, and it was too late to get on the list for the year. I immediately said to myself that I was going to be on that list. And in 2022, I was. My company ranked #1209 out of 5,000 fastest growing companies. I couldn't be prouder, elated, validated. You see, the Inc.5000, unlike many awards that you can win for growth, is one of the ones were you legit must prove and verify your company's income. That's right, you can't just say it on social media and that makes it true. So, imagine when we achieved this goal and hit the top 25% that year. I was over the moon. With that recognition, I saw new clients, new stages, a book deal, and many other accoutrements because I had a strategy in place of how we would leverage the recognition. And It was so good, I decided to do it again. And we did. In 2023, my company ranked #1103. And I honestly thought I would seek to make the list every year that we meet the qualifications to be recognized. After all, by now our company's ability to generate millions was solidified, and we were seeing steady sustainable growth every year. “The way you see money is about the way you see yourself and your lived experiences.” Dr. Darnyelle Jervey Harmon Ever find yourself saying things like "all money is not good money?" If you've said this, you might be experiencing a trauma response to money. According to Google, Money Trauma is defined this way: a term that describes emotional, cognitive, relational, and physical symptoms that can result from significant financial stressors. Some examples of money trauma include poverty, financial co-dependency, divorce, sudden loss of assets, housing insecurity, money scarcity, caregivers who valued work more than family time, caregivers who taught that money success was the only worthy metric of success. The truth is money, which is a tool, medium of exchange and transactional energetic expression is neutral - it is neither good or bad. But, based on your experiences and what you have been taught to believe you might think is bad or evil and as a result experience what some call money trauma. According to Google, Money Trauma is defined this way: a term that describes emotional, cognitive, relational, and physical symptoms that can result from significant financial stressors. Some examples of money trauma include poverty, financial co-dependency, divorce, sudden loss of assets, housing insecurity, money scarcity, caregivers who valued work more than family time, caregivers who taught that money success was the only worthy metric of success. When I first became an entrepreneur, I used to hear constantly “entrepreneurs solve problems for profit.” The challenge for me back then was that I hadn't ever experienced profit. I was born in lack to lack-minded drug addicts and when given a chance to have my own money, the lack I was born into seeped into my own money management. It took filing bankruptcy and the bankruptcy trustee requiring that I take a financial literacy course where I was exposed to Happy Pocket Full of Money by David Cameron Gikandi. That book changed my life and the way I saw money and therefore myself. It was the beginning of my journey to heal my money traumas and the subsequent trauma responses that are quips and axioms used by most of the people you know every day without understanding the real consequences of speaking such things over themselves. Literally one year after filing bankruptcy, I was a millionaire and a few years later I was running a million-dollar business. Today, I am a proud, unapologetic multi-millionaire running a multi-million-dollar company. While I am not a mental health professional and I do not play one on TV, it is my hope that this episode spurs a desire in you to determine which trauma responses you're believing and living so that you can disrupt the pattern and shift your life and business around money. Let's be clear: money matters. It's hard to be the change when you don't have any. And until lack to loosens its grip on your conscious and subconscious mind, beliefs, thoughts and actions, you will mess with your money and that will make it challenging to achieve your goal to make the move to millions. In this episode, we get into the meaning of a lack/poverty mindset, which for the record is not about how much money you actually have. It's about how you relate to money. I have seen wealthy people experience trauma responses that stops its money from doing what it was created to do – flow and create more. “Profit is how we keep score in business.” Dr. Darnyelle Jervey Harmon For the record, it is a big deal to generate $1,000,000 or more in revenue in your business. If you have accomplished this, you should be very grateful and proud of your accomplishment. You are a belief barrier breaker. But let's be clear, the goal is not topline revenue success, it's bottom-line revenue profit. While there are 4.2% of US based small businesses that generate 7 figures or more each year according to several sources, we have no real idea what percentage profit 7 figures or more. I do believe it's safe to say that if only 4.2% are generating topline revenue at this level, considerably less are profiting at this level. And let's not forget that the statistics for women-owned, black-owned and black-women owned are considerably less at 1.9%, .9% and .5% respectively, so you can see why an episode like this is a disruptor. In this episode, I share the formula that we have personally used to profit $1,000,000 for the last few years in our business. Now, I have to be honest; to pull this off, it's going to take some serious understanding of your numbers – i.e. your pricing and expenses and how much you can actually set aside as profit at the transaction or programmatic level. Episode Summary “Scaling your business is not about speed – it's about readiness.” Dr. Darnyelle Jervey Harmon This past week, my company, Incredible One Enterprises, celebrated 16 years generating revenue as a business. I've shared that to say – we've seen lots of businesses come and go in an attempt to “scale” a business before it's actually ready. In full transparency, we, too, have tried to scale before we were ready and that caused some of the delay we experienced in our earlier years as well as why we took a step back from 7 figures in 2016 to right the foundation of the business so that as we scaled it would be life-giving instead of soul-sucking. The fact is Scaling is a buzzword that is misused and causing operational havoc in businesses. The truth is, most businesses are NOT ready to scale. They don't even truly understand what scaling means. Scaling, is a business operational process that should only be entered into when you business has laid a sold foundation upon which multiplying, duplicating and replicating is actually going to create more of what you desire – income, influence and impact. Scaling has absolutely NOTHING to do with speed or even quantum leaping a business. Scaling requires time, attention and tried and true operational infrastructure that can withstand the economy and industry dynamics. That's right, when you attempt to scale before you are ready, you create an undesirable business that you will likely burnout from and attempt to burn down. I know there are many talking about scaling to 6 figures, but they are giving bad advice. There is no need to scale to cross the 6-figure mark. Low six figures in a lot of ways are a trial and error period for a business to validate their framework or methodology and client delivery systems for producing a result for their pinnacle clients. Once you have certain keys, which I will share in this episode in place, you can begin the journey to consider the feasibility of scaling.
