What's it like being one of only 6,000 women in the U.S. with a master plumber's license? Jessie Cannizzaro didn't grow up dreaming of plumbing, but her story is proof that life's twists and turns can lead to incredible success.Jessie didn't set out to follow in her family's footsteps in the plumbing industry—or even to earn a business degree. Like many young adults, she started college without a clear direction, unsure of what path to pursue. After taking a break to reassess, Jessie returned to school, eventually choosing business as a broad foundation for her career. Plumbing wasn't on her radar until life nudged her in an unexpected direction. While helping her father with plumbing jobs during his recovery, Jessie discovered a newfound appreciation for the craft. What started as an obligation turned into a passion, as she saw the tangible impact of her work and the gratitude of the clients she served. Jessie decided to take the leap, combining her business knowledge with an apprenticeship under her father's mentorship—a decision that ultimately led her to launch her own plumbing business. What sets Jessie apart is her commitment to transforming the trades. Through her innovative apprenticeship program, she's not only helping the next generation learn their craft but also building a supportive culture that prioritizes integrity, skill development, and teamwork. Beyond her work in plumbing, Jessie has also extended her mission of care and community to animals. Her company's foster program helps rescue dogs find homes, reflecting her belief that businesses can—and should—be forces for good in every sense. Jessie's vision is to elevate the perception of tradespeople while creating opportunities for others to thrive.HighlightsJessie's journey from reluctant helper to licensed master plumber. Why she traded a “boring” desk job for the hands-on satisfaction of plumbing. How Milestone Plumbing is shaping the future of trades with an innovative apprenticeship program. The importance of integrity, teamwork, and doing the right thing—even when no one's watching.A behind-the-scenes look at Jessie's "foster a pup" initiative.Tips for young people entering the trades and advice for parents navigating their kids' career choices. If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to subscribe, rate, review, and share it with someone who could use a little inspiration in their career journey.Connect with Jessie:WebsiteFacebookFoster PupsConnect with us:Steve Doyle:WebsiteLinkedInEmailBrad Herda:WebsiteLinkedInEmailThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podtrac - https://analytics.podtrac.com/privacy-policy-gdrpOP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

That India had to warm up to the West is an idea that had been brewing since Indira Gandhi's return in 1980. Singh's success lay in making the same shift much more decisively at the head of a Congress government. It was also audacious, in my book even more so than the 1991 reform, given how little support this had within his party and among the UPA partners. Oh girl how I am ready for Friday! How about you? I can't wait to share with you one of my fav topics today on the podcast: LEGACY! But what does this have to do with finding freedom from disordered eating patterns and behaviors? Well, it's so important that you develop your “why” in recovery, so that you push yourself to leave behind the best version of yourself one day to those who love you! You see, you have a choice right now sister, do you want to stay trapped in the cycle of disordered eating, or do you want to become transformed into who you were made to be? If there is a gap from where you are now to where and who you want to be in the future, today's podcast episode is FOR YOU! You are not your body. You are not your things. You are not your problems. You are not your past. You are not your fears. You are not your unhealthy relationship with food. ~ In Episode 170.5, I talk about leaving a LEGACY. I discuss laying down false ideals and beliefs, so that you can reclaim your life, and make it worth living, while you still have the time.  Freedom is yours sweet friend! The truth is...people remember how you make them feel, not how your body looks or what size your pants are.  The truth is...when you put your head on your pillow each night, only you can be proud of you and make the daily choice to rise again the next morning, fierce and ready to take action against those obsessive thoughts inside of your head. The truth is...all of us will leave a legacy behind one day. What will yours be? Be remembered for the things that matter. (Unlike the number on the scale.) In the first days of his term, President Joe Biden signed Executive Order 14008 on Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad, introducing the Justice40 initiative and setting important climate priorities for the nation. Built upon principals of the U.S. environmental justice movement begun by Dr. Robert Bullard four decades prior, Justice40 set a goal that 40% the overall benefits of federal climate and affordable housing investments must flow to historically disadvantaged communities.  As with any ambitious government spending plan, Justice40 has been subject to scrutiny of the administration's ability to deliver on its intentions. Since January of 2024, the initiative has faced criticisms for its difficult grant application process and inconsistent tracking of where associated benefits and dollars are touching ground in the U.S.  Other developments over the summer of 2024 have also undermined public confidence in Justice40. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court's overturn of the Chevron doctrine with its Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo decision introduced doubts by eliminating a forty-year-old precedent of deferring to agency interpretations of ambiguous federal laws. President Biden's subsequent withdrawal from the presidential race in July has added to the uncertain outlook.  With Vice President Kamala Harris as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, it remains to be seen whether Justice40 in its current form will carry over among a new administration's priorities.  Environmental justice will remain a critical focus for many Ten Across communities whether Justice40 is renewed or not. And though there may be room for improvement, the initiative increased federal support where it has long been needed most and drew national attention to important climate and equity issues.  Listen in as Ten Across founder Duke Reiter talks with Chitra Kumar, a former director in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights, about her observations of renewed vigor for environmental justice across federal agencies and the internal culture shift that resulted from the work of the Justice40 Initiative.  *Note: In this discussion, the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool is sometimes referred to by its acronym, “CJEST.”*  Articles/resources referenced in this discussion:   Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool  “Strengthening Justice40” (Chitra Kumar, The Equation, April 25, 2024)  “Why the White House's Justice40 is an Important Tool to Build On” (Chitra Kumar, The Equation, April 25, 2024)

The Pittman-Robertson Act: A Cornerstone of Wildlife Conservation The Pittman-Robertson Act, officially known as the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act, is a landmark piece of legislation in the history of American wildlife conservation. Enacted in 1937, this act has played a pivotal role in funding wildlife conservation efforts across the United States. Its history, mechanisms, and impacts are a testament to the power of dedicated funding and cooperation between federal and state governments in preserving natural resources. Historical Context In the early 20th century, the United States faced a severe decline in wildlife populations due to unregulated hunting, habitat destruction, and the expansion of agriculture and urban areas. By the 1930s, many species of game animals were on the brink of extinction. This alarming trend prompted conservationists, hunters, and lawmakers to seek solutions to restore and manage wildlife populations. The Pittman-Robertson Act emerged from this urgency. Named after its sponsors, Senator Key Pittman of Nevada and Representative A. Willis Robertson of Virginia, the act aimed to provide reliable funding for wildlife conservation. It was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on September 2, 1937, marking a significant shift in the nation's approach to wildlife management. Mechanisms of the Act The core mechanism of the Pittman-Robertson Act is the imposition of an excise tax on firearms, ammunition, and archery equipment. Initially, the tax rate was set at 11% on long guns and ammunition and 10% on handguns. Over the years, the tax has been adjusted and expanded to include other hunting-related equipment. The revenue generated from this excise tax is collected by the federal government and then allocated to state wildlife agencies based on a formula that considers the state's land area and the number of licensed hunters. This funding is specifically earmarked for wildlife restoration projects, research, habitat acquisition and management, and hunter education programs. One of the key features of the Pittman-Robertson Act is the requirement for states to match the federal funds with their own revenue, typically at a ratio of 1:3. This ensures that states have a vested interest in the success of their conservation programs and promotes efficient use of funds. Impact on Wildlife Conservation The Pittman-Robertson Act has had a profound impact on wildlife conservation in the United States. Since its inception, the act has generated billions of dollars for state wildlife agencies, providing a stable and reliable source of funding that has been critical to the recovery and management of numerous wildlife species. One of the most notable successes of the Pittman-Robertson Act is the restoration of white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and elk populations, which were once dwindling. Through habitat restoration, controlled hunting, and research funded by the act, these species have made remarkable comebacks and are now thriving across much of their historical range. The act has also facilitated the establishment and maintenance of wildlife management areas, which provide critical habitat for a wide variety of species. These areas offer not only conservation benefits but also recreational opportunities for hunters, bird watchers, and outdoor enthusiasts, contributing to the overall quality of life and economy in many regions. Broader Implications and Legacy Beyond its direct impact on wildlife conservation, the Pittman-Robertson Act has set a precedent for how user-generated funding can be leveraged for public goods. The model of using excise taxes on specific goods to fund related conservation efforts has been emulated in other areas, including the Dingell-Johnson Act for fish restoration and management. The act also underscores the importance of partnerships between hunters, conservationists, and government agencies. By linking the interests of hunters with conservation goals, the Pittman-Robertson Act has fostered a collaborative approach to wildlife management that balances recreational use with preservation. Conclusion The Pittman-Robertson Act stands as a landmark achievement in the history of American conservation. By providing a dedicated and sustainable funding source for wildlife restoration, it has enabled the recovery of numerous species and the preservation of vital habitats. Its legacy continues to influence conservation policy and practice, demonstrating the enduring value of strategic, cooperative approaches to managing natural resources. As wildlife conservation faces new challenges in the 21st century, the principles embodied in the Pittman-Robertson Act will remain crucial to safeguarding the nation's rich biodiversity for future generations.

What does it take to transform a small family business into a major player in the beverage industry? Discover the incredible legacy of NorCal Beverage, beginning with Shannon Deary-Bell's grandfather, who turned his Coca-Cola salesmanship into the entrepreneurial foundation of Hires Bottling in 1937. You'll hear the story of Shannon's father and uncle, who made the courageous decision to sell their profitable stocks to protect the family business and its employees, embodying a people-first philosophy that has defined NorCal's journey and continuing legacy. You'll also hear of the tenacity and determination of Shannon as a young manager having to deal with the complexity of "busting" a union that misrepresented itself to the employees. Her pursuit of what was the right thing to do, let to a much greater acceptance from her employees and family alike. Uncover the strategic genius behind NorCal's significant pivot in 2007, when the company shifted focus from bottling popular brands like Dr. Pepper and Snapple to co-packing. This bold move led to lucrative partnerships with major brands like Arizona Tea, Red Bull, Monster, and Gatorade, propelling NorCal to new heights. We delve into how Shannon's insistence for a particular seat at luncheon led to a critical meeting with the CEO of Red Bull in France that opened doors to substantial opportunities, highlighting the company's resilience and adaptability in the face of industry challenges. Finally, we explore the complexities of family business dynamics, focusing on succession planning, leadership transitions, and the difficult and emotional decision to sell the business during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hear Shannon's son Riley, explain his personal account of returning to the family fold to save jobs and his reflections on the pressures and rewards of taking on a leadership role in a newly developed company. Shannon and Riley discuss the importance of personal accountability, hard work, and seizing growth opportunities while maintaining a people-centered approach. Dedication and passion continue to drive their new venture setting the stage of familial business success once again. To learn more about NC Equipment Solutions visit https://nceqs.com/or you can contact them at:Dispatch & General Inquiries: (916) 372-7700; fsd@NCEQS.comAccounts Receivables: (916) 374-2657; AR@NCEQS.comAccounts Payables: (916) 372 7700 ext. 2436; AP@NCEQS.comEpisode Highlights(05:32 - 06:00) The Power of Community(13:57 - 15:01) Trust and Communication in Relationships(18:14 - 19:19) Meeting Red Bull CEO in France(21:59 - 23:40) Succession Planning for Company Presidency(25:58 - 27:02) Father-Son Relationship and Business Sale(32:51 - 34:20) Company Restructuring Saves Jobs(37:46 - 39:09) Family Business Responsibilities and Rewards(44:25 - 45:41) Navigating Entrepreneurship at a Young AgeChapter Summaries(00:00) Building a Family Business LegacyNorCal Beverage's history, family commitment, and employee safeguarding, from Shannon's grandfather's vision to her taking over the business.(15:03) Succession Planning and Co-Packing SuccessNorCal Beverage's strategic pivot to co-packing led to partnerships with Arizona Tea, Red Bull, Monster, and Gatorade, driving growth and resilience.(23:06) Navigating Family Business Sale and TransitionSelecting the next president of a family business, selling during COVID-19, and aligning with company values.(33:16) Business Transition and Family ValuesRiley, a recent business management graduate, joins family business to lead equipment solutions division and support empl

“I found writing almost an unbelievably incredible way to deal with the grief. It was a way to channel my energy in a really productive way that ultimately led to this book that I've written. And it was therapeutic. It was really helpful for me in many ways." — Glenn Hilemann In this deeply moving episode of "Uncorking a Story," we explore the poignant journey of Glenn Hilemann, who turned a heart-wrenching tragedy into a legacy of love and storytelling. Following the devastating loss of his parents in the East Troublesome fire of 2020, Glenn embarked on a path he never anticipated—writing a memoir that captures the essence of his parents' lives, their love, and the indelible mark they left on him. Through our conversation, Glenn shares how writing became an unexpected sanctuary of grief processing, a medium for preserving cherished memories, and a bridge to understanding his parents' lives more profoundly than ever before. This episode is not just a story about loss; it's a testament to the power of storytelling to heal, connect, and immortalize our most treasured connections. Meet Glenn Hileman Glenn Hileman is the CEO of Highmark School Development and has spent over fifteen years living in Bountiful, Utah. His love of Grand Lake, Colorado led to him purchasing his parent's home in 2020. His family is actively working to restore the property from the devastation of the East Troublesome Fire and, in doing so, they hope to honor the legacy of his parents. He joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk about his memoir, "A Yellow House in the Mountains.” Key Themes: The Catalyst of Writing: Glenn Hilemann's journey as an author began in the wake of a devastating fire that claimed his parents' home and lives. The tragedy opened a path for him to write, capturing memories and stories of his parents to honor their legacy. Writing as Therapy: Glenn discovered writing as a powerful medium for processing grief. The act of capturing his parents' stories not only preserved their memory but also provided him a therapeutic outlet. The Power of Shared Stories: Throughout the process, Glenn learned more about his parents' lives through stories shared by relatives. This not only deepened his understanding of his parents but also the bonds within his family. Creative Inspiration: Glenn's creative journey was sparked unexpectedly through music, leading him to write a song that encapsulated his parents' lives, demonstrating the unforeseen ways creativity can emerge. The Challenge of Publication: Transitioning from manuscript to published book involved learning the intricacies of editing, design, and publication, highlighting the dedication required to bring a story to readers. The Importance of Legacy: Beyond personal healing, Glenn's work stands as a testament to his parents' lives, offering insights and inspiration to others through the universal themes of love, loss, and resilience. Future Endeavors: Glenn is contemplating a follow-up book focused on the recovery and restoration process post-fire, aiming to share lessons learned and the continued impact of his parents' legacy. When life hands you a story that veers sharply from tragedy to triumph, it's hard not to share it with the world. Bob DePasquale, our "chief generosity guy," holds nothing back as he unfurls a tapestry of events that transformed his life and sparked a passion for giving. His journey, marked by a life-altering event at 18, led him to redefine success beyond financial gains and into the realms of impact and legacy. His narrative isn't just moving; it's a catalyst for profound reflection and action.Imagine the magnitude of a single act of kindness in the wake of unbearable loss. The echoes of September 11 still reverberate through our conversation with Bob, as he recounts the generosity he experienced during those dark times. What we unearth is a philosophy of radical generosity, stemming from genuine connection and resilience. Bob's approach infuses his personal finance book and podcast 'Speaking of Impact', stirring others to consider the true weight of their legacy and the warmth of community in personal evolution.Transitioning from a professional background to a role that resonates deeply with one's values can be daunting, yet it's a journey Bob embraces with open arms. Throughout our discussion, we weave through stories of personal transformation, revealing how shifts in perspective can lead to fuller, more generous lives. Bob's insights into clear financial advice, the importance of transparency in business models, and the indelible mark each person can make on the world are not only inspirational; they're an invitation to redefine wealth and success for ourselves. Join us in this episode as we explore these themes, promising to leave you with a renewed sense of what it means to truly make an impact.Your Brand Amplified is proudly sponsored by Simplified. Imagine having the power to mold your kids into value-creating adults who understand the value of money and work. Sounds incredible, right? Well, our guest today, Scott Donnell, is here to share his insights on how to do just that! With a background in building companies and a burning desire to instill financial acumen in young minds, Scott has dedicated his life to teaching value creation to children. He has created a unique system and an app that not only helps parents save money but also educates kids on budgeting and saving. Now picture a legacy that goes beyond wealth, where you pass down values and stories that last generations. Intriguing, isn't it? Scott postulates that creating family legacies should pivot on value creation rather than money accumulation. He meticulously breaks down three types of values – material, emotional, and spiritual – and how each contributes to crafting a successful family legacy. This discussion is punctuated with practical examples from Scott's life, offering us a real-life portrait of how to instill the idea of earning based on the value created. This isn't just about passing on money, but about passing on values, character, and the power of hard work that will have lasting effects. So, join us as we navigate the path to creating a future generation that's financially literate and values-driven.Check out the show on any of your favorite platforms and give us a like and follow if you like our content! To build a great culture, it is a journey, not a destination.  Culture and great places to work can happen anywhere - you could be running a business that has nothing glamorous about it and still make it a great place to work if you focus on it. Our guest today works in the printing industry. It's not glamorous, it's got tight margins, and is very competitive, but he's created an amazing place to work - people don't leave - if they do they come back as “rebounders.” This company is profitable and give an enormous amount back to their community all while creating a legacy.  Can you imagine waking up everyday and being excited to go to work?  Even better, can you imagine knowing that you've created that place for people to feel that way?  Jay Wilkinson is the founder of Firespring – a Nebraska-based company that serves thousands of purpose-driven companies and nonprofit organizations in all 50 states and on 6 continents. The Mason High School football program is all about unity this season. The Comets (3-1, 3-0 Greater Miami Conference) have certainly fulfilled that theme the first half of this regular season. "They wanted to become the tightest team in Mason history," Comets coach Brian Castner said. "They want to be able to have the legacy of 'Man, that team had phenomenal chemistry because they loved one another and they wanted to be tight.'" Castner was a featured guest on this week's WCPO High School Insider podcast as he discussed how his team bonded this summer, including how it addressed mental health, leadership and other lessons that set the foundation for the team to thrive on the field the past four weeks. "I've always said I'm going to make you a better person before I make you a better player," Castner said. "And this program is going to make us better people before it make us better players. Chemistry is huge." Castner said he was emotional after the Comets' first win over Colerain in program history Sept. 9. "I can't say enough good things about them," Castner said. You will also hear from Milford coach Tom Grippa about the Eagles' first 4-0 start since 1977. Woodward coach Jeremy Pflug discusses the Bulldogs' third consecutive win including two offensive stars - junior quarterback Armoud Seals (1,426 yards passing) and junior wide receiver Donte Ferrell (839 yards receiving). Madeira coach Chris Stewart reflects upon the Mustangs' 4-0 record and why he enjoys coaching at the Cincinnati Hills League program in his fifth season.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

About Zabrina Zablan: Zabrina has always enjoyed planning events and is obsessed with pretty much anything love related. After getting engaged, she found that there weren't a lot of spaces that fit her very beautiful and unique relationship. Certain "traditions" did not work with her love story and she wasn't about to settle for anything less than what her partner and she deserved. The wedding industry has still not created the space that her community needs to showcase their love stories. In the midst of planning her own wedding, she still faced vendors calling her partner and her “the groom”, over explaining to people that this was a “same sex relationship”, and even worse — vendors saying they couldn't work with her. She figured that enough was enough and that no other couple should go through what she went through. Thus, The Gay Agenda was formed! In this episode, Jamie, Heather and Zabrina Zablan discuss:The reward of going through hardshipsBeing intentional and mindfulCreating a long lasting impact The key to consistent creativityKey Takeaways:Hardships and uncertainty will force you and your team to grow and learn new things that you may not have considered before. Be intentional, be mindful and take notes of important things, trust your people and invest effort and time in improving communication with your team and clients.Infuse your career with meaning and purpose. Guy Hatcher is Managing Partner at The Company Coach and columnist for the Christian Post. He's the author of, "Your Future Reflection: How to Leave a Legacy Beyond Money."   Matthew 6:25 says, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?” Using this excerpt, Hatcher explains how people can cope with financial anxiety.    God's word states, “Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves those who have it.” –Ecclesiastes 7:12 NIV. Hatcher discusses how people can use this saying to better manage their investments with wisdom.   Proverbs 13:22 (NIV) says, “A good man leaves an inheritance for his children's children, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous.” Hatcher thinks it is so important for people to leave legacies. He talks about how people can better understand the power of “The Blessing,” and how they can receive and give it.   Find out more about Guy Hatcher at www.guyhatcher.com.    Visit The Company Coach at www.thecompanycoach.com.   Known as "The Legacy Guy," Author, Speaker and Life Coach Guy Hatcher has spent his lifetime helping families plan their legacy. The man of over 10,000 Kitchen Table Conversations, Guy's unique conversation style makes him part financial advisor, part pastor and part counselor who helps individuals and families extend their legacy to impact the world for generations to follow.    For over 25-years, his proven approach merges money management, tough love and an honest appraisal of core values that create what he calls "a-ha" moments.    These moments allow for families to identify all-encompassing plans that not only address a family's heritage and values, but focuses on a person's God-given gifts, embraces purpose and passion and launches generations of impact.
