Exploring the Contributions of Asian and Pacific Islander Athletes in Football

Beyond the "Novelty": The Untold Origins of Asian and Pacific Islander Football PioneersWhen we think of Polynesian dominance in the NFL today, names like Troy Polamalu, Puka Nacua, and Marcus Mariota immediately come to mind. The islands have become a powerhouse for football talent, but the roots of this tradition go back much further than most fans realize. In a recent episode of the Pigpen podcast, host Darin Hayes sat down with Tim Brown of Football Archaeology to uncover the forgotten history of the first Asian and Pacific Islander (API) players to lace up their cleats and change the game. The Early Days: Foreign Nationals and Walk-OnsLong before the 1960s brought major shifts in sports integration, a small group of Asian players was already making waves in college football. Interestingly, many of these early pioneers weren't domestic recruits but foreign nationals.During the late 1800s, wealthy families and government officials from China and Japan often sent their children to the U.S. and Europe for education. These students brought back more than just engineering degrees; they brought back a love for American sports. The "Exchange Student" Athlete: Many of these students were natural athletes who joined football teams as walk-ons to better acculturate to American life.A Multi-Sport Legacy: Tim Brown highlights one standout at the University of Pennsylvania who was not only a varsity baseball player but also one of the top tennis players of his era before trying his hand at football. From the Islands to the Iron: Walter "Sneeze" AchiuWhile Asian players appeared on the East Coast as early as the late 1800s, it wasn't until the 1920s that we saw the first identified Pacific Islander make a mark. That man was Walter Achiu.Achiu's journey is a fascinating look at the "hidden" pipelines of early football. A standout at the St. Louis School (then St. Louis College) in Honolulu—a Catholic school that still produces NFL talent today—Achiu ended up playing for the University of Dayton. Why Dayton? It turns out both schools were run by the same Catholic order, creating a bridge from the tropical islands to the Ohio gridiron. The First API Star in the NFLAchiu was a dual-threat star, captaining the track team and playing halfback and quarterback. In 1927, he broke the ultimate barrier by joining the Dayton Triangles, making him the first Asian and Pacific Islander player in NFL history."His race was half of his football identity in the press. They'd call him 'The Chinese' or 'Native Islander'—it was a novelty to the media of the time, regardless of his actual skill on the field." — Tim BrownHis nickname, "Sneeze," reportedly came from his surname, Achiu (pronounced Ah-choo), which he told fans was "just like a sneeze" to help them remember it.A Legacy Beyond the GridironLike many players of the era, Achiu's athletic career didn't end with the NFL. He transitioned into professional wrestling, a career he maintained into the 1950s. While he held an electrical engineering degree, the lure of the ring (and the better pay) kept him in the spotlight for decades.Today, we see a heavy influence of Samoan and Hawaiian players across every level of football. While they are no longer viewed as "novelties" or "attractions," it is important to remember the pioneers like Walter Achiu who traveled thousands of miles to prove that the game of football...

What Makes a Family Business Last Across Generations Episode 125 of The Family Biz Show delivers one of the most grounded and insightful family business leadership stories in recent memory. Hosted by Michael Palumbos, a seasoned financial advisor for family business owners, this episode features Domenic Cortese of Cortese Construction Services—a second-generation leader actively transitioning a thriving company to the third generation. Through honest family business conversations, this episode explores the real mechanics behind longevity: trust, governance, wealth discipline, and intentional succession. These are not theoretical lessons. They are lived leadership legacy stories that show what it truly takes to move a family business to new generation leadership without breaking relationships or momentum. Immigrant Roots and the Foundation of Trust The Cortese story begins in the early 1950s when Domenic's father and uncle immigrated from Italy and built a construction company from nothing. Their partnership was rooted in deep family enterprise relationships, marked by absolute trust—even when conflict was present. Their dynamic illustrates a critical truth often discussed by any experienced family business advisor: trust does not require harmony, but it does require commitment. These early family enterprise stories laid the groundwork for a business that would survive multiple transitions. Yet, as Domenic explains, the same trust that fueled growth also created governance challenges—highlighting why family governance and trust must evolve as businesses grow. Succession Is About Choice, Not Obligation One of the most impactful family business conversations in the episode centers on Domenic's cousin, who never wanted to be in the business. Rather than forcing participation, Domenic sought outside guidance from a family business succession planning advisor, creating a dignified exit that preserved both family harmony and business health. This moment underscores why family business legacy planning is inseparable from personal fulfillment. A strong family business advisor understands that continuity fails when individuals feel trapped. Addressing family dynamics in succession early is one of the most effective forms of family business continuity planning. Architecting a Family Enterprise That Can Adapt When Domenic assumed leadership, he didn't simply inherit the business—he rebuilt it. By exiting seasonal concrete work and expanding into remodeling, he demonstrated thoughtful family business strategy rooted in core competencies. This approach to architecting a family enterprise allowed the company to maintain family enterprise momentum without reckless risk. Rather than chasing growth, Domenic focused on designing family business continuity, proving that sustainable scale comes from discipline. This mindset mirrors how sophisticated family business family office structures think about long-term enterprise value. Letting Go of Control to Build Real Leadership A defining theme in this episode is Domenic's decision to move away from founder-centric control. Learning to trust non-family leaders became essential to sustaining momentum in family business operations. Today, key non-family roles support quality, operations, and growth—demonstrating how trust in family business extends beyond bloodlines. This shift reflects best practices in family office explained frameworks, where governance systems protect culture while empowering professionals. Any family business family office advice worth following emphasizes this balance. Preparing the Family Business for the New Generation Now transitioning ownership to his three children, Domenic offers a real-world case study in multi-generational continuity. Equal ownership, clear expectations, and accountability—such as shared liability for company assets—reinforce mature family enterprise relationships. Domenic's focus on separating sibling roles from business roles directly addresses common family business trust issues. These intentional structures support family business continuity strategy and reduce emotional decision-making, a lesson any family business succession planning advisor would endorse. Wealth Discipline and the Family Office Mindset Throughout the episode, Michael Palumbos—speaking from his experience as a financial advisor for family business owners—highlights the importance of separating personal wealth from business dependency. Domenic's disciplined approach to family business wealth management, including real estate investing and gifting strategies, reflects a true family business family office mindset. This approach ensures founders can step back without fear, a cornerstone of effective family business wealth management advisor guidance and long-term family office legacy planning. Grandchildren, Values, and Legacy Beyond the Balance Sheet Looking ahead, Domenic emphasizes preparing grandchildren through earned responsibility, humility, and philanthropy. These practices reinforce legacy continuity planning and sustain family business momentum across generations. By introducing philanthropy early, the Cortese family uses values as a training ground for leadership—an often overlooked yet powerful aspect of family enterprise stories that truly last.   Why This Episode Matters Episode 125 stands out because it connects governance, wealth, and relationships into one cohesive narrative. It offers clarity on family business legacy planning, real insight into family enterprise relationships, and practical guidance from both a business owner and a trusted family business advisor perspective. For anyone navigating succession, governance, or wealth transitions, this episode explains—clearly and honestly—what makes a family business last across generations.

Michael Phelps BioSnap a weekly updated Biography. This is Biosnap AI. Over the past few days Michael Phelps has quietly but unmistakably stayed in the center lane of sports culture, business and soft‑power celebrity. The most biographically meaningful moment came at Sports Illustrateds Sportsperson of the Year event in Las Vegas, where he received the prestigious Muhammad Ali Legacy Award and delivered what Sports Illustrated described as an inspiring speech about purpose beyond medals and his ongoing advocacy for mental health and youth sports. That kind of lifetime‑achievement recognition firmly cements him in the pantheon, not just as the most decorated Olympian, but as a long‑term civic figure in sport. From that same Vegas swing, his comments on the eternal GOAT question spilled out of the ballroom and into the algorithm. Pro Football Network and other outlets report that Phelps, asked to name the greatest of all time across sports, doubled down on Michael Jordan as his unquestioned GOAT and childhood idol, pointedly putting Jordan ahead of LeBron James, Tom Brady, Serena Williams, Tiger Woods and yes even himself. In a clip highlighted by EssentiallySports, he jokingly balked at choosing between his 23 Olympic golds and Jordans 23 jersey, quipping that Jordan wore it while he earned it, but ultimately refused to put himself above his hero. Marcus Jordan then quietly co‑signed the moment by liking a viral reel, a tiny social‑media nod that kept Phelps threaded into NBA fan gossip for a full news cycle. On the style and cross‑promotion front, Vogue Hong Kong notes that Phelps was one of the boldface names to don A24s buzzy Marty Supreme varsity jacket, a shrewd bit of marketing that slid the swimming icon into film and fashion discourse and underscored his continuing value to brands far outside the pool.In swimming media, SwimSwam's year‑end traffic recap and Swimming World's Americas coverage both framed Phelps as the enduring reference point in U.S. swimming a retired legend whose open letter on USA Swimming and ongoing foundation work still shaped some of the most‑read stories of the year. That is retrospective rather than breaking news, but it reinforces his long‑term narrative as the sport's moral center. There are, at the moment, no verified reports of new business ventures or scandals tied directly to him beyond these appearances and commentaries; any social‑media chatter about surprise comebacks or reality shows remains, for now, pure fan speculation.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI

That call became the first of many moments that would shape his understanding of trauma, resilience, and eventually, recovery. He is the guest on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, available for free on their website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most podcast platforms. When Andrew Baxter, better known by many as “Drew Breasy,” spent 28 years in law enforcement, beginning as a 911 dispatcher and ending as the lieutenant commanding a communications center that handled roughly 1.8 million calls annually. That journey taught me how to stay calm in chaos, and build teams that do the same. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. When took his first seat behind the console as a 911 dispatcher, he couldn't have imagined how a single call would change the trajectory of his life. The young recruit had joined the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department full of energy and purpose. But one of his earliest calls, a helicopter crash, left a permanent imprint on his mind and spirit. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . “It was one of those calls you never forget,” Baxter says. “I wasn't on the scene, but I could hear everything. The voices, the panic, the chaos. And that's the thing about dispatching—sometimes the trauma isn't direct, but it's just as real.” From Dispatcher to Deputy: How a Helicopter Crash and Trauma Changed His Life. Special Episode. That call became the first of many moments that would shape his understanding of trauma, resilience, and eventually, recovery. From the Console to the Streets Baxter's career began in dispatch, but his ambition and commitment to service soon took him beyond the phone lines and radio traffic. He transitioned to the streets, trading in the headset for a patrol car. Over the years, he climbed the ranks, eventually retiring as a Sheriff's Lieutenant. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. While dispatch exposed him to the raw fear and emergencies of strangers, working the streets brought trauma even closer. He responded to violent crimes, traffic accidents, domestic disputes, and tragedies that most people only see on the evening news. “The shift from dispatcher to deputy was like going from hearing about the fire to being inside of it,” he recalls. “You see things you can't unsee. You carry them with you, whether you want to or not.” The Hidden Cost of Service For Baxter, the accumulation of both indirect trauma from dispatch and direct trauma from his time as a deputy began to take its toll. Like many in law enforcement, he carried his pain quietly, not wanting to burden others or show what might be perceived as weakness. From Dispatcher to Deputy: How a Helicopter Crash and Trauma Changed His Life. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. But trauma has a way of surfacing. For Baxter, it came in the form of post-traumatic stress, destructive behavior, and substance abuse. The very qualities that made him a strong deputy, discipline, resilience, and a refusal to quit, were the same qualities that kept him from asking for help when he needed it most. “I thought I could outwork it, push through it, just like I always had,” Baxter says. “But trauma doesn't work that way. It catches up with you.” His struggles spilled over into his personal and professional life. Relationships strained. Trust eroded. The career he had built with such pride began to feel like it was slipping away. A Turning Point Recovery didn't come easily, but it did come. Baxter eventually sought help, and through the difficult process of facing his pain, he found not only healing but a new mission. From Dispatcher to Deputy: How a Helicopter Crash and Trauma Changed His Life. The full podcast episode is streaming now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. “I realized I wasn't alone,” he says. “There were countless others in law enforcement, dispatch, fire, EMS—people just like me, who were carrying invisible wounds. If I could get through it, maybe I could help them, too.” This realization transformed his life. No longer was his story just about trauma and struggle. It became about recovery, resilience, and using hard-earned lessons to light the path for others. A Mission to Help Others Today, Baxter speaks openly about his experiences, using his platform as “Drew Breasy” to reach those who may still be suffering in silence. He shares his journey not to dwell on the past, but to show what's possible when someone chooses to face it. “Helping others is what gives all of this meaning,” he explains. “If my story can prevent someone else from going down the same destructive path, or if it encourages them to get help sooner than I did, then it's worth it.” From Dispatcher to Deputy. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. Through speaking engagements, podcasts, and personal outreach, Baxter advocates for mental health awareness within the first responder community. He knows firsthand the stigma that surrounds asking for help in law enforcement and wants to break it down. “There's nothing weak about seeking help,” he says firmly. “It takes more courage to admit you're struggling than it does to ignore it.” A Legacy Beyond the Badge From his early days as a 911 dispatcher to his retirement as a Lieutenant, Andrew “Drew Breasy” Baxter's career was marked by service. But perhaps his greatest service has come after the badge, helping others heal from the traumas that come with wearing the uniform. Check out the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. The helicopter crash that began his journey was a moment of tragedy. But today, Baxter has turned his pain into purpose. His story is a reminder that trauma may shape a person, but it does not have to define them. “Recovery is possible,” he says. “I'm living proof of that. And if I can help even one person believe it's possible for them, too, then that's my mission.” From Dispatcher to Deputy: How a Helicopter Crash and Trauma Changed His Life. Special Episode. Send us a textWhat legacy will you leave behind when you're gone? The question haunts us all in quiet moments, but we typically frame it in terms of material possessions—property, money, heirlooms. Today's exploration upends that notion completely, inviting us to consider that the most profound inheritance may not be tangible at all.Drawing from powerful scriptural foundations in Genesis, Psalms, and Proverbs, we uncover how biblical figures like Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, and Daniel weren't primarily beneficiaries of material inheritance. Rather, they received something far more enduring—a spiritual legacy, a blessing, a covenant relationship with God that transformed not just their lives but generations that followed. "A righteous man leaves an inheritance to his children's children," Proverbs tells us, but what is that inheritance exactly? The answer comes through a remarkable historical comparison between Jonathan Edwards and Max Jukes—contemporaries born in the early 1700s who left dramatically different imprints on the world. Edwards, the renowned theologian whose descendants included 100+ lawyers, multiple senators, governors, college presidents, and even a U.S. Vice President, versus Jukes, whose family line produced hundreds of premature deaths, imprisoned individuals, and societal burdens costing millions. Their contrasting legacies offer a profound lesson: "Your biology cannot stand your spirituality." The spiritual DNA we pass down often proves more influential than genetic inheritance. This truth challenges us all. What are we preparing to leave behind? A force of blessing that empowers generations, or patterns that perpetuate struggle? As the poem concludes: "Legacy is not left behind, it's passed on voice to mind. Choose your seed, choose your soil, choose your sun. The story is told when life is done." What's it like being one of only 6,000 women in the U.S. with a master plumber's license? Jessie Cannizzaro didn't grow up dreaming of plumbing, but her story is proof that life's twists and turns can lead to incredible success.Jessie didn't set out to follow in her family's footsteps in the plumbing industry—or even to earn a business degree. Like many young adults, she started college without a clear direction, unsure of what path to pursue. After taking a break to reassess, Jessie returned to school, eventually choosing business as a broad foundation for her career. Plumbing wasn't on her radar until life nudged her in an unexpected direction. While helping her father with plumbing jobs during his recovery, Jessie discovered a newfound appreciation for the craft. What started as an obligation turned into a passion, as she saw the tangible impact of her work and the gratitude of the clients she served. Jessie decided to take the leap, combining her business knowledge with an apprenticeship under her father's mentorship—a decision that ultimately led her to launch her own plumbing business. What sets Jessie apart is her commitment to transforming the trades. Through her innovative apprenticeship program, she's not only helping the next generation learn their craft but also building a supportive culture that prioritizes integrity, skill development, and teamwork. Beyond her work in plumbing, Jessie has also extended her mission of care and community to animals. Her company's foster program helps rescue dogs find homes, reflecting her belief that businesses can—and should—be forces for good in every sense. Jessie's vision is to elevate the perception of tradespeople while creating opportunities for others to thrive.HighlightsJessie's journey from reluctant helper to licensed master plumber. Why she traded a “boring” desk job for the hands-on satisfaction of plumbing. How Milestone Plumbing is shaping the future of trades with an innovative apprenticeship program. The importance of integrity, teamwork, and doing the right thing—even when no one's watching.A behind-the-scenes look at Jessie's "foster a pup" initiative.Tips for young people entering the trades and advice for parents navigating their kids' career choices. If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to subscribe, rate, review, and share it with someone who could use a little inspiration in their career journey.Connect with Jessie:WebsiteFacebookFoster PupsConnect with us:Steve Doyle:WebsiteLinkedInEmailBrad Herda:WebsiteLinkedInEmailThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podtrac - https://analytics.podtrac.com/privacy-policy-gdrpOP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

That India had to warm up to the West is an idea that had been brewing since Indira Gandhi's return in 1980. Singh's success lay in making the same shift much more decisively at the head of a Congress government. It was also audacious, in my book even more so than the 1991 reform, given how little support this had within his party and among the UPA partners. Oh girl how I am ready for Friday! How about you? I can't wait to share with you one of my fav topics today on the podcast: LEGACY! But what does this have to do with finding freedom from disordered eating patterns and behaviors? Well, it's so important that you develop your “why” in recovery, so that you push yourself to leave behind the best version of yourself one day to those who love you! You see, you have a choice right now sister, do you want to stay trapped in the cycle of disordered eating, or do you want to become transformed into who you were made to be? If there is a gap from where you are now to where and who you want to be in the future, today's podcast episode is FOR YOU! You are not your body. You are not your things. You are not your problems. You are not your past. You are not your fears. You are not your unhealthy relationship with food. ~ In Episode 170.5, I talk about leaving a LEGACY. I discuss laying down false ideals and beliefs, so that you can reclaim your life, and make it worth living, while you still have the time.  Freedom is yours sweet friend! The truth is...people remember how you make them feel, not how your body looks or what size your pants are.  The truth is...when you put your head on your pillow each night, only you can be proud of you and make the daily choice to rise again the next morning, fierce and ready to take action against those obsessive thoughts inside of your head. The truth is...all of us will leave a legacy behind one day. What will yours be? Be remembered for the things that matter. (Unlike the number on the scale.) Last episode focuses on his pursuit of his own identity—his desires, his actions, the why and the how. In this episode, we'll dive into his current work as a VC investor, building up the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Singapore and Southeast Asia. We'll discuss the legacy he hopes to create for his country and the region; and we'll explore his expectations for his children as a father at age 46. Episode Breakdown: 0:34—Setting the stage and the tone for this and the next episode 2:23—Kicking off with a big question: Is Singapore still relevant after 50 years? Here's an entrepreneurial view "In 2015, when Singapore celebrated its 50th birthday as a nation. How do I convince my parents that I can transform this business as well?" 11:04—Turning Spare Millions into Family Business Magic: The Synergy Cycle of Tech, Money and Southeast Asian Economy "Everyone gets to have food on the table. What we didn't realize that what this family business did was that it took that technology, have more food, more quantity, and decided to sell it cheaper to a poorer province, where those villagers were now able to obtain more quantity of food for their families." 21:35—Breaking the Patriarchal Mold: How Self-Development Earned Me My Father's Respect "My father has been an Asian patriarch with an iron fist. He now talks to me about the side businesses that he's doing. He asks me as his advisor and no longer sees the son on whom he used to look down." 25:41—Still Figuring It Out: The Never-Ending Saga of Self-Discovery "I still believe that I'm evolving. I'm still learning more in terms of understanding my identity." 28:27—Fatherhood and Fortune: What's the Game Plan for Your Next Generation, Chris?
