I am very happy to be back after my brief summer hiatus to bring to you a truly inspirational story of someone who has experienced all of life's highs and lows and has come through it all thanks to grace, resilience, great friends, and incredible talent. Today I am honored to be speaking with Grammy-nominated recording artist, songwriter, activist, filmmaker and friend, John Forte. John is probably best known for writing and producing songs for The Fugees and their multi-platinum record The Score, and for his subsequent collaborations with Wyclef Jean. After huge success as a producer in the late 90s and following the tough unsuccessful (in John's mind at the time) release of his first album, Poly Sci, John went into a deep isolation. Then when an opportunity presented itself for him to work as a middleman connecting people who were acting as drug couriers, John took it. His focus was less on the work he was doing and more on what he could do with the money he was making – make more music. In July of 2000, Forté was arrested at Newark International Airport. As he explained to GQ magazine back in 2022, “I was picking up two carriers who had already been cooperating in a controlled sting, because they'd been caught and apprehended with 14 kilograms of liquid cocaine,” he says. He was sentenced to the mandatory minimum of 14 years and incarcerated at FCI Loretto, a low-security federal prison in Pennsylvania. With friends like Carly Simon and with support from an unlikely ally then Senator Orin Hatch from Utah, Forte's case was presented to President George W Bush for commutation and his sentence was commuted. After serving 7 years, John was finally free. John left prison and went on to do what he was always called to do – make music. For more than two decades, John has produced solo albums and a myriad of collaborative projects. John is currently composing the score and writing/producing the soundtrack for the forthcoming “Kerouac's Road: Beat of a Nation” for Universal, he also recently scored the forthcoming 6-part HBO series “Eyes on the Prize”. John's music has also been featured in films and television, including the Emmy-nominated “Momentum Generation” for HBO. John also created The Brooklyn Nets inaugural theme song back in 2012, a very personal thing for him as a Brooklyn native. The film, The Russian Winter, was released in 2012, following John's concert tour through Russia while exploring his life up until then. A second film about John's life is currently in production, Settling the Score. John is also very involved in prison reform and social justice initiatives – all while he is enjoying his life as a father of two living on Martha's Vineyard. In this two-part interview – John and I talk about his upbringing, his incredible career, his time in prison, his incredible commutation by President Bush and all the amazing work he has accomplished since then - not to mention the wonderful life he has built – savoring the simple pleasures in life like fishing and being a Dad, while writing, making music and producing films. John's story is one of promise, hope, redemption, and love. His life and example move and inspire me - I know it will you too... Today's podcast features NBA performance coach Andrew Paul. Andrew is the Director of Performance and Rehabilitation for the Oklahoma City Thunder. He is both a sports performance coach, as well as a physical therapist, and utilizes his wide-ranging expertise in his position. Andrew has previous experience in the NCAA, as well as with military special operations, and was named the NBSCA strength coach of the year in 2022-2023. As the sports performance profession moves forward, we are understanding that training is not a one-size fits all experience, while finding new ways to classify athlete archetypes, exercise classifications, and how to piece it together to meet the needs of an athlete. Part of what makes training and coaching enjoyable is seeing the diverse range of athletic movers, and the optimal exercises and concepts by which to create their programming. On today's podcast, Andrew discusses key differences between muscular and elastic movers in basketball and related training implications. He goes into propulsive and absorption-based exercises, range of motion concepts based on athlete types, and how to assign individualized training based on strengths, weaknesses, and the needs of an NBA season. He also speaks on slow-tempo work, connective tissue health, foot training, and much more on this information-dense podcast. Andrew is pushing the envelope in high-performance training, and I really enjoyed this conversation. Today's episode is brought to you by TeamBuildr, the Plyomat, and LILA Exogen. Today, with multiple XXL Awards under his belt and a bag full of some of the most defining rides in history, Dorian has proven a trailblazer in the big-wave realm, helping to consistently redefine what's possible via one's own paddle power. The oldest of three brothers, all with prodigious surfing talent, Chris Malloy grew up riding waves between Point Conception and Point Mugu, where he learned how to navigate its competitive lineups. By the early 1990s, he was a core member of the Momentum Generation. An injury, however, forced him into the role of observer and ignited a career in filmmaking, resulting in projects like Thicker Than Water (2000), The September Sessions (2002), A Brokedown Melody (2004), One Track Mind (2008), 180 Degrees South (2010), and The Fisherman's Son (2015). He's also done work for brands like Ford and Chevy and Dodge, currently serves as a Patagonia Ambassador, and operates a working ranch not far from where he grew up. In this episode, Malloy sits down with show host Jamie Brisick to talk about his surf odyssey and the highlights of his career, California, the dichotomy between being a bubble-gum pro and traveling missionary, longevity, the importance of immersing oneself in one's environment, Indo trips with Tom Carroll and Kelly Slater, and maintaining a sense of play in life.

There is a superb surf documentary called “Momentum Generation.” In it, a bunch of surfers that become the greatest surfers on the planet tell their tale of how one of the older guys that hung around with them used to make them drop in on closeout waves when conditions sucked. There is a lot to learn in surfing shitty conditions. There is a lot to learn in navigating the shitty conditions of life. Of course, I do my best to follow multiple surf reports and use everything I have learned about surfing over the past four years to guess what break will produce the highest level of reward each day. But sometimes, despite my best efforts, conditions suck…sometimes after driving over an hour just to “score.” Nine times out of ten, even if the scene looks disappointing…I still paddle out wherever I choose to go. I usually tell myself, “Well, I'm here…I may as well make the best of it. It will still beat sleeping.” And sometimes…quite often actually…after I am out in the “shitty” conditions…things shift…conditions change. A sudden rainstorm might clean up the waves. Or the wind shifts and turns closeouts into peelers. When these things happen, I am often the only one out enjoying the bliss. But by then, I'd already had it all to myself for at least an hour. The dipshits will tell you that knowledge is power. The impotent will tell you that understanding is the key to success. Wisdom comes from lessons resulting from HOW you ACT. Knowledge and understanding can lead you to fertile ground…yet there is no value without the ACT. As the Tour heads Down Under, new "Getting Heated" host Coco Ho leads three-time World Champ Mick Fanning and Momentum Generation icon Ross Williams through some not-so-easy subjects. They start the conversation with a spirited debate on whether or not male and female athletes should have separate events. From there the trio is on to World Title talk and the Rip Curl WSL Finals format, in which any of the Top Five could take out surfing's highest honor. The conversation then drifts into some personal territory when Coco, Mick and Ross delve into who is more likely to win an event, a CT rookie or veteran Kolohe Andino, who is yet to win an event despite this being his tenth year competing at the highest level. Benji Weatherley is one of the most fascinating characters in Hawaii. He's a skilled conversationalist, he's best friends with Kelly Slater, and he got Metallica to play at his wedding. Surfers aren't usually expected to be deep thinkers or to exude charisma. So when you meet a surfer who oozes personality, wit and an innate gift for storytelling, they make an impression on you. Listen in as Benji gets deep about his struggles with addiction and depression, his relationship with the late Jake Burton, and why the North Shore has lost some of its edge.
Chris Malloy is the eldest of the famed Malloy surfing trio (big-brother to Keith and Dan) and the first to become an award-winning documentary filmmaker. His journey from country bumkin' on California's Central Coast to big-wave gladiator on the North Shore of Oahu (and back) is one you'll find highly entertaining and inspiring. I caught up with Chris on his sprawling 100-acre ranch to explore his family's surfing roots, the early days of outer-reef adventures, the inner workings of the Momentum Generation, as well as his forays into filmmaking, commercial directing, sustainable fashion and the farm-to-table business he helps his wife Carla with today. Full episode info and Show Notes - www.wearelookingsideways.com When you’ve reached the top, where do you go? It’s a question every athlete has to face, and it’s something that is developing into one of the key themes of the Looking Sideways podcast. In Taylor Knox’s case, working out the answers to such fundamental questions has always been part of his modus operandi. Sure, he is famed as one of the most influential surfers of his generation, thanks to a style that redefined power surfing for a new generation, and two decades on the tour to his name. But really, Taylor’s story is one of evolution - both in and out of the water. The truth is that Taylor has applied the same incredible focus that enabled him to become one of the world’s most celebrated surfers to the mental challenges engendered by a life and career in constant flux. As he explained to me during our conversation, it’s an approach he’s used to face every challenge he’s faced in his career, whether injuries or crises of a more existential nature. In this conversation, recorded in Carlsbad in April 2010, we looked back at the entire story - about growing up as a member of the famed Momentum Generation, about learning to love surfing again in the face of shifting motivations, and about his surfing life today following retirement after twenty years on the tour. My thanks to Taylor for a brilliant afternoon, and for sharing his story with me for the show. Hope you enjoy the episode. Thanks as usual to Matt Ward for the theme tune, and to my new editor Fina Charleson.
In the early 90s, Bryan Doonan and his identical twin brother Kent were two of Quiksilver's budding pro stars. They were two of the hottest surfing talents from LA County, a feat that's all the more impressive when you consider they grew up deep in the Crescenta Valley, near Pasadena. Bryan and Kent both became National Champions and were hidden heroes of the Momentum Generation. Today, Dr. Bryan Doonan owns five Urgent Care centers in Southern California, as well as a Sports Medicine and Family practice in Newport Beach. During this episode of the People Who Surf Podcast, Dr. Doonan talks about balancing work and surf, his link to the pros of today, and the incredible adventures he enjoyed growing up as a unit with his brother. I hope you enjoy. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Full episode info and Show Notes: www.wearelookingsideways.com Its always great when the legends live up to the hype - and that was definitely the case when I welcomed Rob Machado onto the show for episode 057. Rob was in town to promote Momentum Generation, the new documentary that catches up with the iconic Momentum crew 25 years after they first came onto the scene via Taylor Steele’s classic film of the same name. It’s a compelling watch, and the film doesn’t shy away from tackling some of the great surfing talking points of our time: Rob and Kelly’s infamous high five, the injury wild card vote that ended Rob’s tour career, the death of Todd Chesser, and plenty more. Happily, Rob was also up for going in-depth on these same legendary stories, and the result is an intimate, honest and totally compelling chat with one of the greatest surfers ever. Thanks as ever to Matt Ward for the theme tune.
