Anyone who knows Nancy C. Williams knows that she can tell a great story. I've sat around tables listening to her tales for years and never get tired of it. Listen in to the stories she tells about Siberia, Seabees, wasps (not capitalized), and FedEx. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. What Do Houses with Chicken Legs Have to Do with Russian MIGs? Nancy C. Williams has been writing advertising copy and other professional works for over thirty years, but now that she's dipped her toes into fiction, she's got the bug, and she's here to tell us about it. Her novel, To Love a Falcon, is the latest in the Ever After Mystery Series (the 1940s line) and features the Russian fairy tale "Finist the Falcon." While you don't need to read the fairy tale to enjoy the novel, it's short and you will get little nuggets out of Nancy's story that you might have missed otherwise. Nancy drew on her experience going to Siberia for her son's adoption, a story her father-in-law told about WWII, and even her time with FedEx riding in the jump seat (think Tom Hanks and Castaway. Nancy didn't crash, thank goodness!) Add to that Providential provision in her writing center of a whole display of Russian toys and fairy tales and well... she just had to write this book. I do not confess to begging her to do it. Nope. No confession here. *whistles. To Love a Falcon by Nancy C. Williams When life already seems bleak, the Russians send her deeper into Siberia. Aircraft mechanic Katya Morozov longs for her beloved Mikhail, a Russian naval officer, to return from war. But when an unwanted work assignment takes her far from her home into remote Siberia, Katya faces threats—perhaps because she and her father were engaged in covert protection for persecuted Christians. A chance encounter with charming test pilot, Yuri Sokolov, turns into more than a passing acquaintance...igniting the flames of a conflict between Katya's faithfulness to Mikhail and her growing attraction to the enigmatic pilot. Will messages from a mysterious woman in the woods give her the wisdom and strength she needs? Yuri, who has hidden battles of his own, must likewise make a decision—does he follow his dreams or pursue the lovely mechanic who has captured his heart? To Love a Falcon, a retelling of the Russian fairy tale “Finist the Falcon,” takes readers into the intrigues of Russian operatives, the stark landscape of Siberian winters, and the courage of those who risk death for faith and love. This week, I am delighted to welcome Richard Brockman, MD to the podcast who joins me from Columbia University, United States. An intertwined tale of a boy's world shattered by suicide and a man's story rewritten by neuroscience.Richard Brockman, MD, is a clinical professor in the department of psychiatry at Columbia University and a visiting professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Namibia. He has been honored with the Nancy C.A. Roeske Award for medical student education by the American Psychiatric Association and with the Victor J. Teichner Visiting Scholar Award from the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry for his teaching. Also a playwright, his shows have been produced both off-Broadway and on international stages. When Brockman found his mother's body, the simple narrative of his childhood ended. Life After Death tells the story of a boy who died and of a man who survived when the boy and the man are one and the same. It tells a very personal—yet tragically common—story of irredeemable loss. It tells the story of story itself. How story forms. How it grows. How it changes. How it can be broken. And finally, how sometimes it can be repaired. Now an expert in genetics, epigenetics, and the biology of attachment, Brockman chronicles his evolution from a child overwhelmed by trauma to a man who has struggled to reclaim his past. He lays bare the core of one who is both victim and healer. By weaving together childhood despair and clinical knowledge, Brockman shows how the shattered pieces of the self—though never the same and not without scars—can sometimes be put back together again. It has been my pleasure to have Richard join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode. Suicide Zen Forgiveness with Richard Brockman: Personal Narrative and Neuroscience in Suicide In this episode of 'Suicide Zen Forgiveness,' host Elaine Lindsay interviews Dr. Richard Brockman, a clinical professor at Columbia University and author of the critically acclaimed book 'Surviving Life After Death.' Drawing on his own childhood experience of losing his mother to suicide, Dr. Brockman explores the interplay between personal narratives and neuroscience in understanding the impact of suicide on survivors. With emphasis on shifting perspectives and accepting the lack of control over such events, Dr. Brockman posits that survivors can eventually come to terms with their loss and find freedom from the guilt or self-blame often associated with suicide of a loved one. This deep and insightful conversation offers valuable insights into the process of healing after such traumatic life experiences. 00:01 Introduction to Suicide Zen Forgiveness 00:14 Meet the Host: Elaine Lindsay 01:02 Introducing the Guest: Richard Brockman, MD 03:59 Richard's Personal Story: Dealing with Mother's Suicide 05:02 Exploring the Concept of Narrative and Biology of Story 05:53 Understanding Animal Memory and Story Structure 08:38 Impact of Suicide on Biological and Psychological Narrative 09:38 Exploring Individual Reactions to Trauma 10:28 Richard's Journey in Psychiatry and Neuroscience 12:26 The Unanswered Questions of Suicide 16:38 The Personal Impact of Suicide on the Survivors 17:58 Understanding the Role of Age and Gender in Suicide Impact 29:04 The Role of Control in Experiencing Trauma 32:08 Understanding Instinctive Responses 32:43 Discussing Suicide and Mental Health with Children 33:55 The Importance of Role Models and Support Systems 37:08 Dealing with Overwhelming Crises 37:37 Personal Experiences with Earthquakes 39:47 Resilience in Children vs Adults 44:38 Understanding Suicide from a Personal Perspective 51:25 The Journey of Writing a Memoir 56:08 Concluding Remarks and Future Plans I am honoured to share my guest, Richard Brockman MD. AI and Genetic Manipulation Show NotesSummary: We know that the capabilities of AI, Artificial Intelligence, are increasing at an exponential rate today. Many outspoken voices are sounding the warning that AI is on track to grow out of control and cause an extinction event of humanity. Others, like our friend Timothy Alberino, predict AI will cause homo sapiens to become obsolete, making it necessary for humans to alter their DNA to become Human 2.0 in order to stay competitive in society. Is it possible that by combining AI with genetics, or biometrics, we are setting the stage for what Paul calls the “strong delusion” that God will send on the Christ-rejecting world? This Episode is brought to you by: Our Premium Subscribers or “Seekers” John O., Nancy C., Marty R., Bridgette L., and Gretchen K.Links to sources:Possible End of Humanity from AI? Nancy leads a full and happy life today and credits the program for this.UNITED WE STANDWe learned that we had to fully concede to our innermost selves that we were alcoholics. This is the first step in recovery. The delusion that we are like other people, or presently may be, has to be smashed.ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 30I came to Alcoholics Anonymous because I was no longer able to control my drinking. It was either my wife's complaining about my drinking, or maybe the sheriff forced me to go to A.A. meetings, or perhaps I knew, deep down inside, that I couldn't drink like others, but I was unwilling to admit it because the alternative terrified me. Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women united against a common, fatal disease. Each one of our lives is linked to every other, much like the survivors on a life raft at sea. Today's guest hosts are Brent J. Cohen and Charlotte Hancock, Executive Director and Communications Director for Generation Progress. They discuss how, last week, the Supreme Court allowed a Texas law to take effect that bans abortion after around the sixth week of pregnancy, at which point many people do not even know they are pregnant. This law is devastating for many Texans, particularly for those who cannot afford to travel out of state to access abortion care. It also goes against the established precedent set by Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, leading many to be concerned about the implications of this law for other states across the country. To talk with Brent and Charlotte about this law, and what can be done to protect abortion rights in Texas and beyond, they're joined by two expert guests. They are Jackie Blank, a federal legislative strategist and the Act for Women campaign manager at the Center for Reproductive Rights, and Nancy Cárdenas Peña, the Texas state director for policy and advocacy at the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Nancy Cárdenas Peña, the Texas director for the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, joined The World's host Marco Werman to talk about the impact of Texas' new abortion law on undocumented women at the US-Mexico border.
