In this special episode of “Post Reports,” columnist Petula Dvorak reads her first installment of The Post's revealing history column, Retropolis. James Buchanan barely won the presidency. The nation was roiling in the debate over slavery. So when Buchanan became gravely ill before his inaugural address, it wasn't a stretch to suspect an assassination attempt. The presidential entourage all stayed at the posh National Hotel on Capitol Hill and they fell ill, too. It hit more than 400 guests of the hotel and more than 30 died. It became known as the mysterious National Hotel Disease and confounded Washington for months. This column details the story of the sickness and the doctors and detectives who searched for the cause. The piece was reported, written and read by Petula Dvorak. Audio production and original music by Bishop Sand.

Two Guys on Block Island

Dave Turner has become one of Block Island's most gregarious, beloved characters. It all started when his grandparents purchased and restored a dilapidated house on Beach Avenue. Because of that purchase Dave has spent every single summer of his life on Block Island serving first as a lackey at the National Hotel before becoming Freddie Finn's first mate on a lobster boat. His days at Finn's restaurant led him to form unbreakable bonds that hold firm to this day. When Dave met his soulmate, Rosemary Tobin, he became a year-round resident. Dave, Rosemary and their son Zane are a typical Block Island family. Like many families here, they juggle a hectic summertime schedule. Between Dave's work as a property manager/construction dude and Rosemary's work as a real estate agent and part owner of Eli's restaurant, they somehow manage to still find the humor in life despite the madness that summers can bring. We'd also like to point out that Dave has since retired the technique he employed to deal with disgruntled customers during his younger days as a server at Finn's. Which is good. Because we love to eat at Eli's.

Vin McAloon is one of Block Island's elder statesmen. He arrived on Block Island at eight days old in 1939. Things were different back then and Vin's memories of his early days paint a vivid picture of simpler times on the island. His family bounced around from rental property to rental property for many summers. One memorable tenure at the Saloveiken property found Vin waking up in the morning, opening his front door and walking across Corn Neck Road for a dip in the ocean to start most days.Vin recounts the many jobs he's held over the years. From lifeguard at Town Beach to proprietor of both the Neptune House and the National Hotel and a stint as  Chief of Police, Vin's stories will have you in stitches. As one of the island's well-known taxi cab operators, Vin has shuttled thousands of visitors around Block Island. Any passenger lucky enough to take a ride with Vin surely was treated to a welcome from perhaps the most well-qualified ambassadors the island has to offer.Just when you think there wasn't one more thing Vin could surprise you with, he stuns Rich and Marc with a tale of having to bring one of his own children into the world when it became apparent that hustling off-island to a hospital was not an option.Sit back, relax and enjoy a look back at a truly remarkable Block Island life.

In January and March of 1857, President-elect James Buchanan stayed at the National Hotel in Washington D.C.Located along the National Mall, the National - formerly known as "Gadsby's Hotel" - was the most regal lodging choice in the nation's capital at the time. Many banquets and balls were thrown in the hotel's ballroom, and it made a logical choice for Buchanan to stay there in the days leading up to his inauguration. However, what people didn't know is that during his prior stay at the National, Buchanan and several of his staff-members had fallen ill to a mysterious illness, which would return with a vengeance during his second visit a month later. In the years since, some have theorized that poison may have played a part... Hey Guys, Happy New Year and we are back now from vacation!! We just had the 100th anniversary of the 18th amendment of the United States Constitution (Prohibition) which was on January 17th, 1920. Our contest will be ending on January 31st with the winner being announced in February on our social media. Check it out at www.tikicentralcanada.ca So the drink we will talk about on this show is called Mary Pickford from back in the time. It was created for our Canadian actress and producer Mary Pickford who worked in USA. She was also one of the founder of the Pickford-Fairbanks studio with Charlie Chaplin (which turned into United Artists Studios). It was later bought out by MGM studios. Here is a YouTube link to UA studios history: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMUwEJgX81k. She was also one of the founders of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science which presents the Oscar Awards out every year. So the drink was created in Cuba for her by Eddie Woelke or Fred Kaufmann at the National Hotel of Cuba. Recipe: 1.5 oz white rum (we used Cuban rum for this), 1.5 oz pineapple juice, 1 tsp. grenadine, 6 drops of Maraschino liqueur (you can use cherry juice instead if you want it sweeter and less boozy). Shake in your shaker and then double strained into a coupe glass. What is double strained? Well listen to find out!! On "Mark's adventures" segment: we will talk about Esotico which is a 30 minute walk from downtown Miami, Florida. Mark's favorite drink was the Tangaroa’s Butt which consists of Mezcal, Wray & Nephew Overproof and Mount Gay Black Barrel rum. Yes, the drink has a special glassware for it...don't ask!! We talk about a special food item there that will definitely have your arms up in the sea about. A pineapple class that has some interesting details to it as well. On "Did you Know?" segment: we will give you a few facts about Prohibition and how it started from two major groups: ASL and the WCTU who used their power to get the 18th amendment in place. Canada did have a short period of time of Prohibition but then we realized we could sell our whiskey to USA. If you want to know more cocktails that came out of this time, check out this link: https://www.thrillist.com/drink/nation/definitive-guide-to-iconic-prohibition-era-cocktails This is part one of a two part series on Prohibition (part two will be next month). Stay tune with the next episode with Paola back at the studio and we talk about a tiki classic Shark's Tooth.
