Sextile is an electro-punk duo based in Los Angeles. They're newest record, Yes, Please is due out May 2 and is their sophomore release on Sacred Bones. On Yes, Please, founding members Melissa Scaduto and Brady Keehn offer up their most realized and personal record yet, all with an overflowing trifecta of visceral, frenetic and heady energy. Melissa and Brady share their musical backstory, how Brady found music in his disciplined upbringing and why Mellissa initially resisted dance music. We get the origin story of Sextile and how they made their first record on a $250 budget in sober living situation. We learn why Yes, Please has more emphasis on lyrics the previous records and why Mellissa is nervous about a particular song. The duo share their writing and recording processes on Yes, Please, how they adapt to the current touring climate and why Nick Zinner operated as their front of house engineer for a split second. Joe, Brady and Mellissa discuss the delights of Japan and we hear a couple new tunes. SEXTILE SACRD BONES Please visit and support Izotope and Distrokid for continued exclusive listener discounts. In 2003, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were not only emerging as one of the most stellar bands in a particularly thrilling New York rock scene, but also as one of the most exciting bands in the world. Their breakout hit "Maps" would be a major pop crossover moment, joining the lexicon of great and timeless rock and roll love songs. At the band's helm was Karen O, the firecracker of a lead vocalist whose songwriting, style and stage presence has influenced an ever-growing list of rock and pop stars in her wake. She met drummer Brian Chase while attending Oberlin and later connected with guitarist Nick Zinner at NYU. When the three combined forces in 2000, it would lead to the arty-punk tour de force that was their debut album Fever to Tell and some of the most talked about gigs around NYC during the Meet Me in the Bathroom era. On this week's episode hosts Rob Sheffield and Brittany Spanos discuss "Maps" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and are joined by their brilliant colleague Julyssa Lopez to meditate on what makes the song (and its legendary video) so iconic, while also breaking down Karen O's legacy as one of the great vocalists and frontpeople in rock history.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tyler and Greg recently saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs live at the Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band, comprised of New York natives Karen O, Nick Zinner, and Brian Chase, is touring for their most recent record, 2022's Cool It Down. That record is an 8 track masterpiece, according to the experts here at Down On High. Their live show was filled with rockstar antics, confetti, giant beach balls, and hits after hits. Featuring tracks from all five of their albums, this show suggests seeing them now is the best time to see them.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs joined us for a special performance and conversation today, hosted by Klein. Ally. Show from the DTS Sound Space in Los Angeles, giving fans a taste of what to expect on their 2023 summer tour now underway. Currently on the road in support of their 2022 comeback album Cool It Down, Karen O, Nick Zinner, and Brian Chase of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs kicked off their 2023 tour itinerary at the beginning of May and will be making stops in several major U.S. cities including Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, and more before hopping across the pond to wrap in Europe at the end of August. It's an exciting time for the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, performing at the Just Like Heaven festival on May 13 amid a headlining tour, new music recently released, and on top of all that it's the 20th anniversary of their 2003 debut, Fever To Tell. “We had like an early dinner, that was really celebratory,” singer Karen O. says. “Mother Wolf, I think it was… they spoiled us, and it was like one day into practice, which is probably too early into practice. Yeah, there's no real knowing how to celebrate 20 years,” she admits. One form of commemoration arrived via a new-to-most video short, There Is No Modern Romance, shot back when the band was on their 2003 U.K. tour. As huge fans of Alternative music in the ‘90s and 2000s, Ally says, those are the decades that will always be obsessed over, while wondering if the band members have the same kinds of attachments. Guitarist Nick explains, “I mean… I still don't really know how to answer this question. It's so abstract and it was such a, obviously completely different time, and a lot of ways, a much more innocent time… The 'indie sleaze' times. But, I don't know, like, I still can't really wrap my head around it. We are the same people, but we're also totally different people.” Looking back at their beginnings, “We had no plan,” Nick admits. “Absolutely. No plan.” Karen adds, “Not only did we have no plan, I remember around the time before we put out ‘Fever To Tell,' we were touring with some friends of ours, and I remember being like -- this isn't like throwing shade -- but I was just like, our friends who we were playing with were like a bit older than us. And I was just like, ‘Man, I will never be a band for more than 12 years… There's no way.' And now I'm like, wow, we're the luckiest band in the world to be around for 23 years. It's so my perspective has changed a lot on that.” With the Just Like Heaven festival fast approaching, drummer Brian says the band is looking forward to catching up with old friends. “We're gonna get to catch up with a lot of people we haven't seen in a while, like The Walkmen especially, who I think we played one of our earlier shows with them back at this venue called The Cooler. And here we are maybe 22 years later playing a major festival in the Los Angeles area. So, super amazing." Hoping the band can help settle a debate about annoying concert attendees, Ally asked who they would consider the most obnoxious out of a couple of selections. Who is worse: the person recording the entire concert on their phone, or intoxicated fans screaming out "Play 'Maps' again"? Nick and Karen remember one festival date when a random guy kept yelling his request of "Heads Will Roll" over and over, leading Karen to address him from the stage. It was from the second song on... a few songs in I was like, 'YOU HAVE TO BE PATIENT!' But, you know, I get it." "I do think the person filming the entire show is way more annoying," Nick admits. Don't miss our full conversation with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in the DTS Sound Space above -- and stay tuned for more exclusives from your favorite stars and artists right here on Audacy. In an effort to explain the context of the land from which the desert blues rockers Songhoy Blues reside, Troy Nelson delves into the meaning behind the commonly-used phrase, “From here to Timbuktu” and the history of the Malian city. From there, Nelson charts the progression of the trio that make up Songhoy Blues, from refugees to Nick Zinner collaborators to Glastonbury performers to major label signees.
Karen Lee Orzolek, or as the world knows her, Karen O, is a South Korean-born American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, director, and it must be said, style icon. She is also famously the lead singer for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who along with members Nick Zinner and Brian Chase, have produced a highly alternative and hugely popular body of work over the years, which is further complimented by her own solo and collaborative releases. Born to a Korean mother and Polish father in 1978, she grew up in New Jersey before attending college in Ohio where she met drummer Brian Chase, and after transferring to an art college in New York, she met guitarist Nick Zinner - the three formed the art-rock group Yeah Yeah Yeahs in 2000. With their first gig opening for The White Stripes, and their debut self-titled EP cracking number 1 in the UK indie charts, they quickly became a vital band in New York's rock scene of the 2000s. Their albums Fever To Tell, Show Your Bones, It's Blitz! and Mosquito all received critical acclaim and commercial success, with the NME ranking Fever To Tell in 2009 as the Number 5 in their Best Albums of the Decade poll. Alongside the success of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O also became heavily involved in the art, fashion and film world, providing soundtrack contributions for director's including Spike Jonze, David Fincher, Tim Burton and David Lynch. This also extended into a long list of collaborations with artists such as Flaming Lips, Har Mar Superstar, Deerhunter, Santigold, Peaches, Parquet Courts, and most notably her Danger Mouse collaboration album, 2019's Lux Prima. This followed up from her gorgeous 2014 solo album ‘Crush Songs', released on Julian Casablancas' label Cult Records. She even recently released a song written for Kenzo's Spring/Summer collection. So come along for the ride as we delve into selecting our favourite songs from the queen of modern rock Karen O and rulers of the art-rock world, Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
"One of my favorite songs when I was 13 (in 1995) was "Friends of P" by The Rentals. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner explains why his first-ever guitar is still his main one, and we get a detailed look at the four-amp, four-pedalboard rig he uses live.
Matt Sharp and Joe gulped down thick, black coffee and hung out for well over two hours. We discussed: Matt's itinerant childhood as the son of a government contractor; working with brilliant producers such as Ric Ocasek; how his first band--Weezer--willed themselves to success; working with Nick Zinner and Ronnie Vanucci on the new Rentals album, Q36; and collaborating with multimedia artists via the HITRECORD platform.

When Sam, a bartender in New York, hears that his ex, Vicki, his one true love, has quit AA and is out drinking again, he embarks on a quest to find her. Sam and his sidekick Francis trek from dive bars to gay bars to rocker bars—encountering skinheads, party promoters, underage drug dealers, and dominatrixes—but they are always one step behind Vicki. It begins to seem like 131 Different Things are keeping the lovers apart. Before the night is over, Sam will have to wrestle with what he is really looking for. Nick Zinner—who plays guitar in the three-time Grammy-nominated band Yeah Yeah Yeahs—provides the visual framework for this inventive novella with his intimate photography. Known for his essays and music writing for Noisey, Vice, and Penthouse, Zachary Lipez brings his pithy, multilayered, and self-deprecating voice to this debut work of fiction. The prose and photography are tied together in a playful taxonomic scheme by editor and art director Stacy Wakefield, the author of the novel The Sunshine Crust Baking Factory. The three artists have collaborated on four previous books, most recently Please Take Me Off the Guest List.
Mike Mehalick recommends the dudes Nick Zinner's, of Yeah Yeah Yeahs fame, supergroup Head Wound City. The boys discuss the merits of anger and a rhythm section, the importance of thoughtful recommendations, the difference between playing and listening to music, and having an outlet for myriad expression.

On this episode of The Unconventionals, host Mike O'Toole sits down with Intel's Creative Director, David Haroldsen to discuss The Creators Project: Intel's unique way connecting the future of chip technology with today's modern artist. This revolutionary partnership between Intel and VICE media allows visionary artists using technology in innovative ways to push the boundaries of creative expression. By doing so, Intel is able to gather insights from those who place unusually heavy demands on technology and, ultimately, generate new ideas for future capabilities for their chips. Enjoying the music in this episode? It's a special composition brought to you by The Creators Project and Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fh9oyffQYd8
