Now one of West Africa's most internationally acclaimed musicians, Baaba Maal trained at a Paris conservatoire and went on to become a kind of musical ambassador, taking stories of his homeland all around the world. He has collaborated with Brian Eno and film composer Hans Zimmer, recorded an album with Mumford and Sons, and was a key member of the Africa Express touring project led by Damon Albarn. A festival favourite, Baaba Maal has energized crowds at Glastonbury and the BBC Proms alike. More recently, Marvel fans know him as the voice of Wakanda, having sung on the Black Panther movie soundtracks. Baaba Maal talks about his early life in Senegal where, as the son of a fisherman, he wasn't expected to become a singer. He discusses the role of the griot in Senegalese storytelling and musical culture. He recalls early song-gathering trips around West Africa with his friend and collaborator Mansour Seck, his formal musical training in Paris, the powerful voice of Senegalese singer Sory Kandia Kouyaté, and meeting Nelson Mandela. Some time ago, Malian singer, songwriter, guitarist and actress Fatoumata Diawara did a wonderful and daring thing – inspired by her friend Rokia Traoré, she bought an acoustic guitar, and taught herself to play it. Since then, Fatoumata has put out her debut record, Fatou, collaborated with Damon Albarn's Africa Express, and contributed vocals to albums by Cheikh Lô, AfroCubism, and Orchestra Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. Her 2018 record, Fenfo translates as “Something to Say”, and she plays some of those songs, in-studio. (Archives.) A l’affiche : Co-Lapsus.

FATOUMATA DIAWARA: Hailed as one of the most vital standard-bearers of modern African music, Fatoumata Diawara takes her artistry to fresh and thrilling heights on her new album FENFO. Her spectacular 2011 debut album FATOU made the Malian singer and guitarist the most talked about new African artist on the planet. FENFO (which translates as “something to Say”’) dramatically fulfils that promise on a set of vivid and original new compositions that draw on the rich experiences she has enjoyed since. Those she has worked with include some of the biggest names in contemporary music. She recorded with Bobby Womack and Herbie Hancock; played Glastonbury and other major festivals; and toured with the Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca. She assembled a West African super-group featuring Amadou and Mariam, Oumou Sangaré and Toumani Diabaté to record a song calling for peace in her troubled homeland; and climbed aboard Damon Albarn’s star-studded Africa Express, which culminated in her sharing a stage with Sir Paul McCartney. She has also continued her parallel career as an actor, including an acclaimed appearance in 2014’s Timbuktu (Le chagrin des oiseaux), which received both BAFTA and Academy Award nominations. www.fatoumatadiawara.com
On hosting duties is Olushola Ajose, a.k.a. Afrikan Boy, a London-born rapper and producer of Nigerian heritage whose music blends hip hop, grime and afrobeat. His track One Day I Went To Lidl caught the attention of MIA, who invited him to collaborate and tour with her. He’s since worked with the likes of Damon Albarn’s Africa Express, DJ Shadow, The Noisettes, Lady Leshurr and Nneka. He’s joined by South London-based neo-soul singer and songwriter of Bangladeshi-Irish heritage, Joy Crookes. She has firmly established herself as one to watch with three critically acclaimed EPs and receiving a Rising Star Award nomination at the 2020 Brit Awards, just in time for the release of her debut album coming later this year. Jaz Karis is a soulful RnB singer-songwriter who cites Erykah Badu, Frank Ocean and Amy Winehouse as some of her biggest influences. Since releasing her debut EP Into the Wilderness in 2017, she has signed to NAO’s record label Little Tokyo Recordings, and amassed nearly 10 million views for her performance of her track Petty Lover on music platform Colors. Also joining the conversation is producer, singer and songwriter Georgia, who began her music career as a drummer for Kwes and Kate Tempest, and has gone on to collaborate with Africa Express, Honne, Mura Masa, Gorillaz and Peter Hook. She won the One to Watch Award at the AIM Independent Music Awards in 2019, and released her second record Seeking Thrills in January this year to critical acclaim. They’ll be discussing what aspects of their personalities shine through the most when making music, what drives their creativity, and what life lessons they’ve learned so far from working in music.

We discuss how they see themselves as more like a western band, their new music and the misconceptions of Timbuktu. Jacob Foko, Prince of the Baleng in West regional part of Cameroon, Africa, is an award-winning photojournalist, experienced multimedia producer, and passionate humanitarian. Devi & Jacob discuss: Humanitarian Photojournalism defined The “University of Life” What Jacob learned when doing the project of “Hundred Faces of Poverty” Giving a voice to the story of those who do not have a voice in society Africa in miniature The inspiration of Jacob's exceptional mother Guiding countries to do good work through the power of Humanitarian Photojournalism What gave Jacob the courage to face death, so that the stories of other’s could live What it took for him to be Valedictorian Doing what you do best and doing it very well How to know what stories to tell The lens that is necessary to shine light on what is invisible to most of the society How humanitarian photojournalism fits into Spiritual Entrepreneurship The powerful lesson that Jacob learned from his encounter with President Bill Clinton and more... More about Jacob: He spent fourteen years as a staff photographer and reporter for Cameroon Radio and Television (CRTV) as well as the magazines Libre Afrique, Africa Express, Africa International and Jeune Afrique Economie. His most celebrated project, “Cameroon’s 100 Faces of Poverty” in 2002, earned him an invitation from the U.S. Ambassador to Cameroon to speak about the challenges of being a photojournalist in an unfriendly political environment. He is a visual and multimedia producer and documentary filmmaker graduated from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, California with a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Journalism and a Master of Arts in New Media Journalism from Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida. He served as keynote speaker at both graduations and simultaneously received an “Outstanding Achievement Award” and an “Advance Achievement Award.” In addition, he was presented the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities (APSCU) “GREAT Award for Excellence, Achievement and Talent” on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. Jacob has established a non-profit organization and a production company called Global Humanitarian Photojournalists, Inc. (GHPJ) in 2007, and Blue World Media Network (BWMN) in 2011. The aim is to document and spread awareness of worldwide poverty and human rights abuses, as well as to present the stories of people and organizations making a difference to abused and at-risk populations.
A symphony for Syria is the story of how 50 Syrian musicians beat the odds to find their way to Holland to perform together. The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians first played with British songwriter Damon Albarn in 2008. Since then, a civil war has divided their country and forced many to rethink many aspects of their lives. Some have decided to live in Europe whilst others have stayed in Syria and continued to try and perform even as their compatriots have died and lost their homes around them. In a symphony for Syria, Amy Zayed explores their lives through music in Syria and their newly adopted countries. And it puts their music in a rich tradition of Syrian performances dating back three thousand years. We share their emotions as Damon Albarn and Africa Express attempt to reunite his old friends in Amsterdam. Can all the members make it to Holland? Is there time to get the music together? And we follow their first concert and what they hope will be an enthusiastic and emotional reception from a European audience as they attempt to persuade them that Syria is not just about war but amazing musical culture as well.
