Ben Reiser and Brody Coning talk to Lori Felker. Spontaneous Filmmaker Lori Felker employs a mixture of cinematic tools to convey her physical and emotional turmoil in this alternately humorous and harrowing first-person recounting of the time she had a miscarriage while attending the Slamdance Film Festival. Come for the well observed personal memoir, stay for the surprising celebrity cameos. (PL) Not You Lori Felker follows-up her essayistic short Spontaneous with this wonderfully discomforting examination of life with a toddler. Starting with a chronological series of vignettes before focus- ing on an awkward encounter with a neighbor babysitter, Not You is Felker’s funniest/eeriest short since Discontinuity (WFF 2014). (BR)
I am very excited about this week’s and next week’s episodes because this is an incredibly valuable and actionable two-parter with a guest who is world-class at what he does and these are skill sets you’re going to need no matter what you do in life. As I’ve been growing this show and looking to take Beyond Influential to the next level, I’ve been thinking a lot about the people I know in my network who are master networkers—they build long-lasting relationships with people at all levels in a way that is not purely transactional, and they do it in a way that feels very real and authentic. I met this week’s guest, Christopher McDonald, when I was working with Tom Bilyeu as my client at VaynerTalent; he’s been an integral part of Tom’s brand and the launch and strategy of both Inside Quest and Impact Theory, which we get into in this Part 1. Christopher is a Talent Booker with almost two decades of experience and an extensive network of connections and relationships. He has worked with everyone from high profile billionaires to celebrities and has booked an array of top talent from the world of entertainment, sports, business, science, tech, and politics. And for what Christopher does as a talent booker, you need to have very strong relationships but also a very strong creative and strategic eye. Christopher has booked, produced, and written for an array of programming including late-night television, cable news, web series, and comedy sketch shows. Christopher helped launch The Kelly Clarkson Show (NBC), Tavis Smiley (PBS), the second coming of The Arsenio Hall Show (CBS/Tribune), It’s Not You, It’s Men with Tyrese & Rev Run (OWN), Post Malone's Worldwide Celebrity Pong League (Facebook Watch), and Demi Lovato’s project (Quibi), and he has been with Tom Bilyeu’s Impact Theory from the very beginning. Normally no one likes a name-dropper, but I specifically told Christopher to please namedrop in this conversation because he’s worked with people like Prince, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Angelina Jolie, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Dave Matthews, Joni Mitchell, Alicia Keys, John Legend... you get the picture. I love to introduce you to the people you should know on Beyond Influential, because while the public usually pays attention to the “face” of the brand, there are always talented people behind these people that make it all possible. On Part 1 of this conversation, we cover a lot of juicy topics: Christopher’s career evolution: From journalism to music booking to launching Impact Theory Working in Hollywood: Expectations vs. reality How he booked the biggest talent in Hollywood: What he loved, his approach, and the not-so-glamorous moments All things networking: Tips, insights, and the biggest mistake people make The launch of Impact Theory & its current growth strategies How to book your show & strategies for landing dreams guests Why you want “lightning in a jar” moments in your interviews, how to take your show to the next level, & more! And you are not going to want to miss Part 2 next week which is all about the ins and outs of pitching, advice he received from Oprah herself about booking, and more! In this episode I speak with Camilla Sacre-Dallerup, a former Strictly Come Dancing champion who completed reinvented herself to a new career and lifestyle, moving from the UK to LA with her husband Kevin in the process to completely reinvent themselves. This is a fascinating conversation about recognising your ego in your career and life and having the discipline to let it go to really be who you truly are, not what is expected of you. We talk about the sacrifices needed during her career transition, accepting that you don’t need anything and the huge implications this had on taking risks to pursue what she really wanted in life. Resources:Camilla’s website with all her meditations, courses, resources and ways to connect direct with her is right here.Camilla challenged me to do her 21 Day Meditation Experience and I’m currently doing it and absolutely loving it - here it is free for you too.Books:I read Camilla’s book Reinvent Me, all about not just career change but identity reinvention. So practical and useful exercises inside - thoroughly recommend this. Camilla has two other books, It’s Not You, It’s Me - about self love to transform relationships and Dream Believe Succeed, filled with actions to actually achieve what you dream about. Her books are available on Amazon or Camilla’s website
Gurdip's off this week but Justin is joined by guest (and TCBCast patron!) Darin Evans to take a (not remotely comprehensive) look at the contributions of soprano backing vocalist Millie Kirkham to Elvis' recording career. Millie's distinctive high voice sound is audible on Elvis classics like "Blue Christmas," "She's Not You" and "The Wonder of You" as well as many recordings by other Nashville recording artists, and she is, to note, the only backing vocalist to have recorded & performed with Elvis through all three decades of his career, making her an iconic part of Elvis' musical legacy. Appropriately, Darin highlights the first song Millie recorded with Elvis, 1957's "My Wish Came True" as Song of the Week, while Justin selects Elvis' cover of Billy Swan's crossover one hit wonder, "I Can Help."

Guest host Hope Davis presents two coming-of-age stories that mingle memory, rebirth, and water. Davis herself reads Elizabeth McCracken’s “It’s Not You,” in which a young woman checks into a grand hotel to cure a broken heart. And from Isaac Babel, the Russian-Jewish author who wrote beguiling tales about the seamy side of early 20th century Odessa, comes "In the Basement.” It has a familiar premise—the unlikely friendship between a poor boy and a rich one. But Babel’s lush descriptions and comic energy make it remarkable. The reader is Richard Masur. Michaela and Patrick knock out their 10th episode with not one, but TWO guests in an “All Question Episode.” In today’s episode we have the following listener questions: What to do when you get Covid and ghosted? Red flags versus deal breakers on apartment cleanliness and living standards? How to react when you send a sexy photo and they just reply, “hot.” Is it a good or bad idea to take a new partner on a trip? Keeping their identities a low profile, we have “Grant & Laura” join us for today’s episode. These two guests have shared countless relationship conversations with Michaela during their lunch table discussions while working on a film. Patrick and Laura have also had their fair share of dating chats over the years — so it was time to bring these two on to share the love. You can share the love too by sharing this episode with friends, partners, family and even those ghosters too. Guest, Jan Yuhas, M.A., MFT, CPC, joins Michaela and Patrick to tackle “Are we being too picky?” when we hit the ground in the dating world. Jan and her twin sister, Jillian, are International Relationship & Lifestyle Coaches and the founders of Entwined Lifestyle. Today, Jan tells us how she helps her clients discover their core values in relationships and align with successful dating practices. So, are we being too picky? What if there’s no spark? How long should we give it a shot before we move onto something new? Are we constantly wondering if the grass is always greener? — Jan helps us answer all of the above and more on today’s episode. Patrick, Michaela and Jan then dive into emailer questions. First, they answer a hard hitting relationship topic from a female listener: “how do I communicate with a guy when he starts distancing himself from me?” Later, another listener asks what to do with the “700 dating app matches” he’s saved up from a year of swiping during the covid pandemic — where do we even begin?! Have you gone long periods of time without hooking up with someone and thought to yourself “What am I doing wrong?” Have you ever compared yourself to your friends who always seem to pop from one relationship to the next and you think "why aren’t I?" Have you ever wondered if you were EVER going to find “the perfect match” or maybe it seems like it’s never going to happen? Listen here folks, if there’s anyone that gets it… it’s ya boy BOBBBAAAAY! I’m here to reassure you beautiful people that you’re smart, you’re unique and it’s NOT YOU… it’s the world buying you more time for yoooself! Today I want to talk about what I learned from going 1000+ days without hooking up with any woman. Topics : 1000+ days of celibacy created the space for me to double, triple & quadruple down on myself Every ounce of time, energy & emotion was reinvested into my ideas and what I thought I wanted to do with my life Some of the biggest lessons I learned : (1) Sex Is Cool, Chasing Dreams Is Better : I sacrificed short-term pleasure for long-term purpose driven fulfillment and I wouldn’t have it any other way because it gave me the space, time & energy to double down on myself. (2) Our Happiness Is Not Found In Someone Else : Having that significant other should only enhance our happiness… it shouldn’t be our lifeline or the only way to put a smile on our face. Taking the time to find what makes US happy will allow us to then share it with a special someone when the time is right. (3) We’re The Creator Of Our Story : We control whether we see a moment or situation in our life as something negative or positive. Instead of thinking I was unattractive or not intelligent because I wasn’t attracting women to me, I flipped the script and realized I was just busy doubling down on myself. Challenge for the listeners Did any lesson resonate or sting the most? Pick one, grab a piece of paper / open your notes app and get reeeeeal What changes can or should you make to better yourself & where you’re headed? What are the best texting practices? Opening liners for dating apps? Pen pal texting versus texting to meet in person? Double texting? Good morning texts? Guest, Jon Bauer (@heyjb__), goes through it all with Patrick and Michaela on all things regarding “Rules of Engagement” on today’s episode. Later, they answer a listener question on best and worst types of food for dinner dates. Does a messy cuisine make or break a date? Another listener asks, “What does it mean when he makes our second date a double date and wants me to bring a single girlfriend for his friend?” Does this mean he’s trying to be casual? And when do we introduce our dates to our friends? When it comes to picking up the tab, let’s draw the line — when are we “being chivalrous” and when are we getting taken advantage of? Is chivalry dead, too antiquated for 2021? When does the other person start footing the bill, when do we split it? Patrick and Michaela dive into all of the above, including purse pumps and dinosaur arms, and the timeline of “courting” in regards to finances. Then the two get into emailer questions — one listener wants to know if he needs to cut things off completely with someone he’s not sure he wants something serious with. Another listener asks about “negging” and Michaela dishes on her reading of the pickup artist culture. In this episode, Kathryn Junius (a.k.a. "Nurse KJ") is back with us to discuss another sex topic: Is squirting real? When does it happen? What is it? Can only certain people do it? Michaela drops a few researched details about squirting and KJ and Patrick discuss a few personal stories on the topic. Then they get into an emailer question about bringing sex toys into the bedroom after a 5th date. Do sex toys mean the sex isn’t good enough? Is the 5th date too soon to incorporate toys? Finally, another listener asks, “How can I be taken seriously/not be seen as a ‘hook up’ if we had sex on the first date?” Can you have a serious relationship after hopping in the sheets on the first meeting? Michaela and Patrick fly solo on the mic this week. It’s a quickie episode, but a vital one— they tackle one important listener question: “How do you date multiple people?” Michaela gets heated in talking about the *WHY* regarding dating more than one person at a time. Then they get into— What do you do when the person you’re dating asks if you’re seeing other people? And finally, "Can I juggle multiple sexual partners?" Let’s talk about dropping the L-Bomb; with the help of Catherine Cox (@healthycathycooks), Patrick and Michaela dive into saying “I love you” for the first time in a relationship. They explore the ILY timeline, who says it first, love languages, and the vulnerable thoughts in the aftermath of dropping the L-word. Later, the three answer a few emailer questions. With “Covid dating life,” one listener finds his relationship moving at a faster than normal pace— So, “How do you avoid going from 0 to 100 with dating right now?” Another listener asks how to “sit back and enjoy the ride” in her long term relationship, seeing that many people have feelings of monotony and disconnection down the road. The last emailer asks about what to do when she hasn’t heard from the guy she’s been dating in a few days — how many days is too many days not to text? We are joined today by Alison Phipps, Professor in Gender Studies and the University of Sussex to talk about her newest book, Me, Not You: The Trouble with Mainstream Feminism (Manchester University Press, 2020). The Me Too movement, started by Black feminist Tarana Burke in 2006, went viral as a hashtag eleven years later after a tweet by white actor Alyssa Milano. Mainstream movements like #MeToo have often built on and co-opted the work of women of colour, while refusing to learn from them or centre their concerns. Far too often, the message is not ‘Me, Too’ but ‘Me, Not You’. Alison Phipps argues that this is not just a lack of solidarity. Privileged white women also sacrifice more marginalised people to achieve their aims, or even define them as enemies when they get in the way. Me, not you argues that the mainstream movement against sexual violence expresses a political whiteness that both reflects its demographics and limits its revolutionary potential. Privileged white women use their traumatic experiences to create media outrage, while relying on state power and bureaucracy to purge ‘bad men’ from elite institutions with little concern for where they might appear next. In their attacks on sex workers and trans people, the more reactionary branches of this feminist movement play into the hands of the resurgent far-right. Dr. Phipps is the author of Women in Science, Engineering and Technology: Three Decades of UK Initiatives (Trentham Books, 2008), an examination of the mixed results of the UK’s attempts to address gender disparity STEM fields through policy and The Politics of the Body: Gender in a Neoliberal and Neoconservative Age (Polity Press, 2014) an award-winning look at the way feminists find themselves negotiating a very tight passage between the Scylla and Charybdis of neoconservatives and neoliberals, as well as a bevy or articles on similar issues. Garin Flowers (@garinflowers) joins Patrick and Michaela as their first guest on the podcast! Garin talks about his current dating situation after coming off Season 16 of the Bachelorette with Clare Crawley. The episode discusses dating with a clearer mindset: Are you dating to just have fun or for a serious relationship?; it’s okay to want either— but be honest with the other person (and be honest with yourself). Then they dive into the significance of dating without tunnel vision or "playing the Bachelorette/Bachelor" for yourself. Patrick, Michaela, and Garin then answer a few listener questions— one listener wants to know how to stop adapting her personality to gain the approval of men while dating. Another person asks how to navigate the “friend zone” when an old friend finally becomes single. The final emailer question tackles the challenge of having a partner with an opposite schedule. With the recent loss of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, I am honored to have two people on the show who are very much in alignment with her fight for gender equality. Andie Kramer and Al Harris are gender bias experts who have spent the past 30 years combating gender bias through writing, speaking and mentoring. We are talking today about the ways in which women experience bias in the workplace and how these biases hinder their advancement and compensation in their careers. You will hear what choices and changes need to occur for our country to make progress in gender equality and racial equality as well. Andie and Al are the co-authors of two award-winning books: Breaking Through Bias: Communication Techniques for Women to Succeed at Work and It’s Not You, It’s the Workplace: Women’s Conflict at Work and the Bias That Built It. Andie and Al’s writing on communication strategies and gender biases have been widely featured, including in HBR.org, The Huffington Post, The New York Times, and The Chicago Tribune. Andie is also a contributing writer for Forbes.com. Together and separately, Andie and Al speak and lead workshops across the country to help women, men, and organizations overcome the negative effects of gender bias and build healthier, more productive workplaces. “Implicit bias is still a problem and that's what we focus on in our work.” “We need a new approach. We need a new way of attacking gender bias. And that new approach involves not telling people NOT to be biased but it involves finding ways to interrupt biases from career affecting decisions.” In this episode, you will hear: - The difference between explicit and implicit bias and how to tell the difference - What women, men, and organizations can do to decrease gender bias - Andie and Al’s choice to write two books and fight for gender equality Coaching Information: If you would like more information on the Clear Choices business and life coaching program, please e-mail me at rob@robaigner.com or go to our website at https://clearchoices.live/. BREAKING THROUGH BIAS— with Andie Kramer & Al Harris.Since #MeToo and stay-at-home orders, communication and gender bias experts, Andie Kramer and Al Harris (Andie & Al) have completed, revised and updated their first book, BREAKING THROUGH BIAS: Communication Techniques for Women to Succeed at Work (Nicholas Brealey Publishing, Sept 8). BREAKING THROUGH BIAS argues that women can avoid or overcome the discriminatory consequences of bias and stereotypes by the effective use of "attuned gender communication" to manage the impressions other people have of them. Andie Kramer is a partner at an international law firm. Alongside her demanding legal career, she has become a nationally known advocate for women’s advancement. Because mentorship opportunities for young executive and professional women are often limited, she co-founded the Women’s Leadership and Mentoring Alliance (WLMA) and has developed numerous women-specific leadership training programs. Andie is the recipient of a long list of accolades and awards for both achievements in her legal career and her advocacy of women. Among her accolades is being named on National Law Review’s 50 most influential women lawyers in America for her “demonstrated power to change the legal landscape, shape public affairs, launch industries, and do big things.” What you’ll learn about in this episode: Why the impact of the global pandemic has been different on women than they have been on men, and why women are shouldering a disproportionate amount of the burden How working mothers with school age or younger children are struggling with a lack of support during social distancing from both their workplaces and their partners at home Why women are paying a higher emotional tax during the pandemic due to increased bias and expectations on women Why men need to accept increased personal accountability to pick up some of the slack, and why the bias that women should be doing the heavy lifting is magnifying the disparity How the intersectionality of gender bias and racism is creating even greater challenges for women of color Why white people need to make the effort to understand how much more difficult things are in the workplace and in our culture for people of color How the present environment is creating a crucial turning point and the dual crises of the pandemic and the murder of George Floyd are magnifying the strain What steps organizations can take and strategies they can use to help overcome gender and intersectionality bias How forcing people to think more slowly as opposed to making knee-jerk reactions can help eliminate bias Additional resources: Breaking Through Bias 2nd Edition by Andie Kramer and Alton Harris: https://amzn.to/3b7vui5 It’s Not You, It’s the Workplace by Andie Kramer and Alton Harris: https://amzn.to/2QUeAtD Website: www.andieandal.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/andiekramer/ Twitter: @AndieandAl
Episode 17: Show Notes. It's not a secret that stereotypes and biases exist, but how can workplaces create systems and processes where gendered characterizations are stripped away to create more equitable, merit-based environments? This question is one which Andie Kramer and Al Harris address in their new book, It’s Not You, It’s the Workplace. As gender-bias experts, attorneys, and speakers, Andie and Al have dedicated their research efforts to understand the influence that stereotypes have on the way women are treated. In this episode, we discuss what sparked their interest in gender-biased workplaces, and what they learned about the issues women had with one another in the workplace. This unexpected finding led them to question myths like the 'mean girl', where women leaders are frequently characterized as bitchy and unpleasant because they are not fulfilling misplaced expectations that stem from stereotypes. We also consider how the small number of leadership roles for women fuel competition by pitting women up against one another. Along with this, we explore the importance of methods and practices that work to remove the subjectivities that always hurt women in the workplace. Although these problems are systemic and require more than a one-time workshop, Andie and Al offer ways that women can support themselves and one another in the absence of organizational reform. To hear more about this important work, be sure to tune in today! Erica Lugo has decided to undergo surgery to remove her loose skin. The Biggest Loser trainer, who lost 160 lbs. and frequently shares candid posts about her fitness journey, revealed on Friday that although she’s had an “okay relationship” with her loose skin, nothing she’s done has been able to stop it from continuing to build up on her body. “Real, scary and raw transparency post. Nervous AF as I type and share,” she wrote on social media. “I’ve worked really hard to lose 160 lbs. I’m proud of the muscle I’ve built and I’m more proud that I’ve been able to keep the weight off for 5 years.” “Loose skin has been apart of my journey for 5 years. I’ve always been okay with it. It’s been my battle scar, but the more I begin to build muscle and get leaner I get the more loose skin builds up. No amount of exercise or nutrition will help the loose skin pockets on my hips and stomach,” she explained. Noting that it “wasn’t an easy decision,” Lugo said the surgery has been “something I’ve researched for years.” “I’ve been back and forth for years and I’m finally scheduled Sept 22nd. “I’ve spent too many years never wearing bikinis because I felt I shouldn’t,” she wrote (https://www.instagram.com/p/CAof9XTpUC9/) alongside one bathing suit snap. “But ya know what? This body lost 150 lbs. This body created life. This body beat cancer. This body is working through an auto immune disorder. This body is worthy despite society standards and my own negative self-chat and it felt good to slip on a bikini for the first time in years and truly be COMFORTABLE.” Lugo also went on to slam some of the harsh criticism she received about her loose skin. “This past week I have read more comments towards myself and other woman about our bodies and our confidence and worth based off how we chose to show our confidence and OUR bodies,” she wrote later that month, noting that while she didn’t have “six pack abs” or “the most toned upper body,” her body doesn’t deserve to be criticized. “Instead I have loose skin from losing 150 lbs. and having a baby. Instead It’s harder for me to lose and tone because I had and beat thyroid cancer and my body doesn’t process hormones like a ‘normal’ hormonal regulation system should,” she said. “Let people be proud of their bodies in progress. We are all trying to be happier, stronger and better versions of ourselves and how we chose to show or acknowledge that is up to US. Not YOU.” Lugo joined the USA reboot of The Biggest Loser this past year and previously told PEOPLE that she often talks with contestants about loose skin. “So many people always ask, and I tell them, ‘Don’t let that be the thing that stops you,’ ” she said. “If you scroll through my Instagram, I’m like, yeah, here’s my stretch marks and here’s my loose skin. This is who I am and that’s my story, so I just own it.” Support this podcast
