Key lessons on reinvention from our conversation:The worst moment in your life, can also be your best: You can use devastating times to build necessary momentum for change  to create opportunities. Adversity can lead to new paths and self-discovery.Experimentation over comfort: If you never try, you will never know what works for you. The key for high-performers lies in setting realistic expectations,  and embracing self-love unconditionally amid imperfection.Confidence despite fear of failure: Your people-pleasing tendencies push you towards perfectionism and hinder you from trying. True confidence lies in owning your uniqueness, celebrating small wins, turn comparison into motivation, and giving yourself grace when you fail. External validation wasn't sustainable to begin with.Authentic is strong:  Being a successful content creator or a successful model and actor in the competitive market of LA requires standing out. You can't stand out if you're a carbon copy of everyone else and trying to fit in. Dare to be different.Happiness is on the Other Side of Fear of Failure: Facing your fears is like finding the keys to doors that lead you into  rooms you never thought existed. Reframe your relationship to discomfort and your whole life will change.Chapters & Timestamps:04:24 Feeling Lost, Hopeless & Healing 05:07 How To Reinvent Yourself & Choose Your Own Path 08:00 The Problem With Imposter Syndrome & Needing Validation 11:15 Navigating the Challenges of Moving to LA & Starting Over 13:06 People Pleasing Vs. All of us change over time, and the choices we made and how we worked in our twenties may no longer suit. In this episode, Denise tells me that it's not unusual to look for alterations in our working lives, and this may be small moves or radical ones.  Having a really clear understanding of what matters to you is important, and sometimes really good hints come from exploring childhood experiences. Change requires networking, but the ideal job might not exist, you might have to create it yourself. Making a decision about how much money you and your family need is important too, and radical moves are best done from a position of strength.Denise Taylor is a chartered psychologist, with an MBA, and her doctorate (gained at 64) investigated retirement transitions. It's not just about the qualifications, Denise is noted as being creative, visionary, and fun to work with. She loves to gather new information and resources to best serve her clients. The Exclusive Career Coach
300: 300 Episodes - Academy Awards for My Best Advice

The Exclusive Career Coach

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 6, 2023 25:55

I can't believe this is episode #300! My first podcast was published on October 25th, 2017. Shortly after that, I put out four additional episodes utilizing some material I had already created. I had no idea where I was going to go with the podcast after those initial episodes – I only knew that I really, really wanted to podcast and believed it was the best way for me to get my brilliance out into the world.  There has been an evolution of The Exclusive Career Coach, to be sure…As the focus of my practice evolved, so did the audience I spoke to via the podcast. Earlier episodes were heavy on content for recent college graduates; there were also episodes for wanna-be entrepreneurs. I went from no guests to having about 25% of my episodes be with guests, before settling on about 10% guest episodes.  I used to “bracket” episodes with themes…spending three or four weeks in a row breaking down a larger topic like interviewing or career decision-making.  I will admit that finding new content for the podcast has become increasingly difficult. ChatGPT has been extremely helpful in guiding me towards the topics people are searching the internet for. I also rely heavily on the “zeitgeist” – what my clients are asking me about and what I'm seeing talked about on social media and in online groups I am a member of.  Now for the meat of episode #300 – My Best Career Advice. I'm going to reference specific episodes and have included the links to those episodes in the show notes. I've awarded winners in each of the categories of podcasts I release, Academy Award style.  Winner of My Best Advice for Career Decision-Making: #119 – Are You Squarely in the Center of Your Passion? This episode resonates deeply with me, as I talk about how so many people leave who they really are at home when they go to work. As a result, work is unfulfilling and mind-dulling. https://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2020-03-18-119-are-you-squarely-in-the-center-of-your-passion I give three case studies of people I have worked with who were squarely in the center of their passion, and why.  Two books I recommend in this episode are Tim Kelley's “True Purpose” and Po Bronson's “What Should I Do with My Life?” Great episode for those of you who are questioning whether you have lost your way, career-wise…or just want reassurance that you haven't.  Winner of Best Advice for Managing Your Career: #219 - Ten Symptoms of Job Burnout – and What to Do About Them http://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2022-03-25-219-ten-symptoms-of-job-burnout-and-what-to-do-about-them This episode was published on March 23rd, 2022 as the world emerged from Covid. Although this episode wasn't specifically about Covid-related burnout – I brought on guests to talk about that topic – it was about how to specifically recognize that what you are experiencing at work is burnout.  For each of the Ten Symptoms, I provide a question to ask yourself and what to do about that symptom. Hint: While some of the Ten Symptoms suggest that you may need to look elsewhere, only two of the Symptoms outright require moving on.  Great episode for those of you who aren't feeling it at work, but don't know why. Or you suspect what the problem is, but don't know what to do about it.   Winner of Best Advice for Making a Career Transition:I actually have three episodes for this category – all related to career pivots and career reinventions. #121 – Career Pivots and Reinventionhttps://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2020-04-01-121-career-pivots-and-reinvention #133 – Is Now the Perfect Time to Reinvent Your Career? https://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2020-06-24-133-is-now-the-perfect-time-to-reinvent-your-career #280 – What You MUST Do in Your Job Search if You Are Pivoting Careershttp://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-07-19-280-what-you-must-do-in-your-job-search-if-you-are-pivoting-careers In these episodes, I define career pivots and career reinventions, give strategies for successfully navigating a career pivot or career reinvention, talk about the pros and cons of a career reinvention, and give strategies for job searching when you have decided to pivot or reinvent your career.  Great episodes for those of you who are considering a career pivot or career reinvention – or those of you who are dissatisfied with your current career path and want to explore alternatives.   Winner of Best Advice for Dress & Etiquette:I haven't done many episodes in this category, and some of them are with guests, which I'm leaving for a separate category.  #291 – What Should I Wear to a Job Interview? http://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-10-04-291-what-should-i-wear-to-a-job-interview In this episode, I address the questions I'm getting about how to dress for job interviews in a post-Covid world. I cover WHY dress still matters, how to determine what is appropriate dress for the company culture, and the levels of business casual.  Great episode for those of you with a job interview coming up, whether in person or via technology.   Winner of Best Advice for Job Interviews:Consistently, the episodes I publish about interviewing are among the most downloaded – clearly people are roaming podcasts to get ready for a job interview.  I began with episodes covering more general aspects of the job interview; since then, I've gotten more granular with the scope of what I cover.  I've selected three winners, all covering the behavioral interview: #277 - Behavioral Interview Questions Don't Come Out of Thin Air – How to Know What You're Going to Be Asked http://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-06-14-277-behavioral-interview-questions-dont-come-out-of-thin-air-how-to-know-what-youre-going-to-be-asked #262 – The Behavioral Interview: Your Five-Step Process for Delivering Job-Winning Answershttp://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-02-22-262-the-behavioral-interview-your-5-step-process-for-delivering-job-winning-answers #150 - Putting a Bow on Your Behavioral Interview Answers http://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-02-22-262-the-behavioral-interview-your-5-step-process-for-delivering-job-winning-answers I cover what a behavioral interview question is, how to prepare for these types of questions, and how to wrap up your answers with one of two approaches that garner you what I like to think of as “bonus points.”  Great for those of you who have job interviews coming up!   Winner of Best Advice for Job Search:This is a HUGE category! I could have gone in a lot of different directions with the winner, but I chose a foundational concept that benefits EVERYONE looking for a new job.  #258 - How to Organize Your Job Search Time to Optimize Your Results http://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-01-25-258-how-to-organize-your-job-search-time-to-optimize-your-results I provide five strategies for structuring your job search time to yield the best possible results.  Great for those of you who find your job search time gets hijacked by other things – and those of you who find your job search time isn't being used wisely.   Winner of Best Advice for Life Coaching:To be clear, I am a Certified Executive & Leadership Development Coach, not a life coach. However, life coaching is an unregulated industry, and I am a student of life coaching.  It's incredibly important for me to talk about your mindset when we talk about most of these other topics, but your thoughts WILL generate the results you get.  These five episodes each cover an aspect of the thought model taught by one of my early coaches, Brooke Castillo. In a nutshell: A Circumstance is a situation in your life that can be proven in a court of lawYou then have a Thought – positive, negative, or neutral – about that CircumstanceThat Thought generates a Feeling for youThat Feeling generates an Action, Inaction, or Reaction, whichLeads to your Result #38 - The Neutrality of Circumstanceshttps://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2018-12-19-038-the-neutrality-of-circumstances #39 - Your Thoughts Determine EVERYTHINGhttps://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2018-12-19-039-your-thoughts-determine-everything #40 - How Do You Want to Feel?https://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2018-12-19-040-how-do-you-want-to-feel/ #41 – Taking the Proper Action Stepshttps://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2018-12-19-041-taking-the-proper-action-steps #42 - You ARE Getting Results…Are They the Results You Want? https://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2018-12-19-042-you-are-getting-results-they-the-results-you-want/ Great for those of you who want an easy-to-understand framework for looking at the results you are getting in your life…and why.   Winner of Best Advice for Leadership:Several of the episodes about Leadership include guests, but here's a great foundational one with 10 points you must know to be a successful leader.  One I think is often overlooked is #7 – ask for advice on your leadership. Many new leaders – and seasoned ones as well – are either afraid to ask or don't think they need to. Be open to feedback from your direct reports and you'll become an even better leader. #223 – Leadership 101: What You MUST Know to Be a Successful Leaderhttp://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2022-04-20-223-leadership-101-what-you-must-know-to-be-a-successful-leader Great for those of you entering into your first leadership role, or those of you who could benefit from a refresher.   Winner of Best Advice for LinkedIn: This is another huge category. Because technology is involved, some of my earlier podcasts on LinkedIn contact outdated information.  I chose this episode because this is a concept I teach a lot of my clients – how to leverage the people their connections are connected to.  #244 – Mining Your Connections' Connections on LinkedInhttp://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2022-09-28-244-mining-your-connections-connections-on-linkedin Great way to expand your LinkedIn network strategically and easily.   Winner of Best Advice for Networking: Of all the networking-related episodes I've put out, I've gotten the most feedback on this one. I think that's because Introverts resonated with the topic – and many Extraverts did, too.  One of my goals in my practice is to help my clients become successful networkers – getting past their fears, learning how to network effectively, and how to give as much value as they get in the networking process.  #295: Help! I'm an Introvert and I Hate Networkinghttp://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-11-01-295-help-im-an-introvert-and-i-hate-networking Great for everyone who is less than excited about networking.   Winner of Best Advice for Professional Development:I did this episode in the later days of Covid, when so many were working remotely and others had gone back into the office. I was getting a lot of questions about how to make sure your work was noticed when you didn't have direct face time with your boss. #221 – How to Get Noticed and Promoted While Working Remotely http://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2022-04-06-221-how-to-get-noticed-promoted-while-working-remotely Great for those of you who still work remotely, and those of you who supervise remote workers.   Winner of Best Advice for Resume Writing:It may surprise you that, as one of fewer than 25 Master Resume Writers in the world, I don't love talking about resume writing.  I love WRITING resumes. Having said that, I have put out great content covering all aspects of the resume. The episode I chose goes into some detail on how to customize your resume for each position you apply for. Everyone tells you you SHOULD do that – but I wanted to tell you exactly HOW.  #287 – How to Tailor Your Resume and Other Materials For a Specific Positionhttp://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-09-06-287-how-to-tailor-your-resume-and-other-materials-for-a-specific-position Great for those of you in a job search.   Winner of Best Advice for Salary Negotiations:I've only done a handful of episodes on this topic; the episode I chose provides you some foundational teaching I do with my clients who want coaching on salary negotiations.  #149 – Salary Negotiations: 3 Important Numbershttps://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2020-10-14-149-salary-negotiations-3-important-numbers/ Great for those of you who are in a job search.   Winner of Best Advice for Work Issues:This category covers a lot of ground and it was difficult to pick a favorite. The one I chose is one I frequently send a link to for clients and those I consult with.  #169 – Questions to Ask Your Manager to Improve Your Relationshiphttps://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2021-03-17-169-questions-to-ask-your-manager-to-improve-your-relationship/ This is another one I frequently send links to out to folks:#171 – How to Have a Successful 1:1 With Your Bosshttps://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2021-03-31-171-how-to-have-a-successful-11-with-your-boss Great for those of you who not only want to improve your working relationship with your boss, but also those of you who want to maximize the effectiveness and frequency of your 1:1 with your boss.   And finally, Winner of Best Guest:As I tell you every time I have a guest on the podcast – I don't often HAVE guests on the podcast. Think of this as a Venn diagram: I want a guest who overlaps the areas of expertise I have (in other words, not someone talking about something completely off-target for my audience), BUT who doesn't completely overlap my area of expertise (I've already got those areas covered, thank you very much).  I want to give out two awards here; the first is for the episode I most frequently direct people to listen to: #154 – Five Ways Mind Drama Can Creep Into Your Job Searchhttps://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2020-11-18-154-5-ways-mind-drama-can-creep-into-your-job-search-with-jane-springer Jane Springer was my guest on the episode – BTW, she earns a side award for being my most frequent guest. Mind drama is a HUGE issue in the job search…and completely avoidable. In this episode, we talk about the 5 ways mind drama can show up when you're looking for a job – and what to do about each.  My second award goes to the person who most affected me personally; this episode rocked my work in more ways than one. #247 – Are You Ready for a Career Break? http://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2022-10-19-247-are-you-ready-for-a-career-break-with-katrina-mcghee Katrina McGhee talks about her own experience with taking an extended, planful career break – and how you can do the same. P.S. – She recently published her book: Career Break For Dummies” – check it out!  Great for those of you who have a life goal you'd like to achieve that requires a concentrated amount of time away from work – and those of you who have a deep need for rest and regeneration.   So, happy 300th episode! To those of you who listen faithfully each week, I so appreciate your dedication to enhancing your career – and that you trust me for that help. For those of you who pop in and out based on the topic each week – I greatly appreciate you too! You know what you need, and you trust me to give it to you. I'm here for all!  Here's also to another who-knows-how-many episodes. We cover conversation openers, the power of a genuine compliment, trying (and sometimes failing) to approach people we admire as a peer, handling the inevitable FOMO and big feelings that arise, when to call it quits (what I call “falling off the cliff”), and so much more. This crossover episode originally aired on the Pivot podcast on June 4, 2023. More About Alisa: Alisa Cohn has been coaching startup founders to grow into world-class CEOs for nearly 20 years. She is the author of From Start-Up to Grown-Up, and hosts a podcast of the same name. A onetime startup CFO, strategy consultant, and current angel investor and advisor, she has worked with startup companies such as Venmo, Etsy, and more.

There is no two ways about it - now is a very tough time for people. It’s a theme that regularly runs through my conversations with clients and those I have been speaking to following the launch of Enterprise Sales Club. We are being told that we are entering the second Covid-19 wave and that brings with it a feeling of impending doom. Add to that that winter is on the way and the picture is gloomy. Amidst all of this, we have still got to keep ourselves motivated - on top of already having a very stressful job. That stress often results from that feeling of always needing to be ‘on’. Enterprise Sales has inherited the Silicon Valley culture of: ‘if you're not on, then you're slacking’ which creates a belief system that does not even allow for any let up when you've closed a game changing deal. If you’re not straight on to the next one the minute the ink is dry on that big deal, that same belief system tells you that you should be - there is still work to do in reaching targets, creating customers and closing prospects. So, what can we do right now to shift that feeling of impending doom and work towards reducing our stress levels? Let Autumn show us the way Autumn is my favourite time of year - symbolically, it is an opportunity for reinvention or adaptive evolution. Nature is setting us an example of how to rid and prune ourselves of what is no longer needed. The leaves turn from green through yellow or red to brown as the trees prepare to let go completely and return to their bare branches. Just as it is necessary for the trees’ survival, getting back to our very essence is necessary for our survival too. We have the opportunity, right now, to do the same. As Michaleangelo said when asked how he created such a magnificent sculpture David “I just took away everything that wasn't David,” We can strip away those things that are no longer, or perhaps never were, us to turn over a new leaf and reinvent ourselves. Where to begin? The historical evidence shows that most beliefs do not tend to stand the long test of time. In fact, even within a couple of decades, the nuance of received wisdom can change because of insights that pivot what we know and the way that we think. That being the case, it is best for us to keep on questioning, developing, and evolving. Particularly around our ‘A’s B’s C’s and D’s’: A - Challenge your Assumptions about the world. The post-Covid world will look quite different to the pre-Covid one. B - Question and evolve your Beliefs. Even our rock-solid beliefs evolve over time, so question what you believe now. It is an unlived life, if you're still believing the same things at, aged 28,38, 48 and 58. C - What is your level of Curiosity? How can you get even more curious? D - Review your Decisions. If you are still operating based on decisions made pre-Covid, it’s time to review them because they are likely to already be outdated. Even though there is a temptation to focus on life one day returning to how it was pre-Covid, none of us really know what the post-Covid world will look like. What’s already become clear is that there is no going back, we’ve already seen fundamental shifts and it is clear that the world we emerge into will be quite different to that which we ‘left’ in early 2020. We need to acknowledge that getting to the point where most of our sales cycle happens physically in front of customers, and panels, etc, is not going to happen anytime soon. We are going to need to keep on selling remotely for the foreseeable future and adaptation is key. Enterprise Sales Club is now LIVE at https://www.enterprisesalesclub.com. Our purpose is to enable SaaS Sales Professionals to achieve their potential through the power of life-enhancing connections, shared experiences, and collaborative learnings. The Exclusive Career Coach

In episode #121, “Career Pivots & Reinvention,” I focused primarily on career pivots. As I define it, a career pivot is like a pivot in basketball – one foot remains stationary while the other foot moves. In a career pivot, one of your feet remains in either your industry or your job function. You remain working in marketing, but pivot from the manufacturing industry to CPG. You remain working in pharma, but pivot from sales to marketing.   A career reinvention, then is moving both feet. You are essentially starting over – and using your transferrable skills in a new job function and a new industry. -A grounds manager for major league soccer who becomes a salesperson for a transportation logistics company -A model manager who becomes a quality assurance manager for a tech startup -A insurance salesperson who becomes the CEO of a nonprofit   The primary message I want to send about both career pivots and career reinventions is to make sure you like your reason for the shift. Rather than telling yourself you have no choice in the matter, I want you to come from a place of deciding…and then deciding to like your decision. Here's why this is important: This is YOUR career. You are in charge of YOUR career. Your career isn't something that HAPPENS to you. There is no clear right and wrong answer when you are thinking about a career pivot or reinvention. There are, however, considerations you'll want to make, such as income potential, availability of jobs in your geographic area, and your skill set.   Let's take an extreme example for illustration. Let's say you've been an incredibly successful farrier – the person who puts shoes on horses and cares for their hooves. You love your work. At least you did until you moved from rural Kentucky to Los Angeles because of your spouse's work. What do you do now? You could: 1)    Commute incredibly long distances so you can keep working as a farrier 2)    Pivot from being a farrier in the horse industry to being a nail technician for dogs and cats in a froofy pet boutique on Rodeo Drive 3)    Pivot from being a farrier in the horse industry to writing about horse care in a horse magazine 4)    Reinvent yourself.   You choose #4. You begin thinking about what you love to do when you're not working. Where your mind goes when you allow it to wander. Here's what you come up with: As a farrier, you really loved marketing your services. Talking to potential customers, offering complimentary services as a way for them to see your work, maintaining an active presence on social media. Sales and Marketing! You realize you love marketing and selling your product and you're very comfortable talking with people. You also recognize that you still want to work primarily outdoors, so you decide to focus your career on sales and marketing positions with animal-related companies. Here then, are some of the pros and cons to consider when considering a career reinvention: PROS: -This is an opportunity to reignite your passion—to re-light a flame you hadn't even realized had gone out -This is an opportunity to meet new people, learn new things, and expand your skills and expertise -This is an opportunity for you to CHOOSE your career path with intentionality, rather than allowing it to happen to you. Very empowering. CONS: -May mean a significant reduction in pay, especially if you are a mid- to senior-level employee in your current career -May mean becoming the low person on the totem pole: less vacation, working weekends and holidays, etc. -May mean feeling like a beginner all over again, with a steep learning curve -May mean additional formal education and/or a certification -Your network may not be in this new industry and job function, so networking will be more challenging -Because you have neither industry nor job function experience, you likely won't be the most desirable candidate, so networking will be essential to get your first job in the new field   What steps might you take if you are considering a career reinvention? 1.    Working with a career coach is essential. 2.    Have a professional resume writer experienced in career reinvention write your resume for you, so your transferrable skills are front and center and the employer can clearly see why you are making this shift. (If it doesn't make sense, the employer will immediately discard you as an applicant.) 3.    Informational interviews with people in the new industry and career field. 4.    Offer to work for free to show them what you are capable of. 5.    Network, network, network. 6.    Create a realistic household budget to determine if this is financially feasible. What are you willing to give up or do without for a while as you build your new career?   Want help finding your next job? She created major momentum in her professional life once she understood her transferrable skills and how they fit with her passions. Despite a number of job search setbacks, Natalia persevered by staying positive. She was the second place candidate more than once during the selection process. She encountered discrimination because she was a mother. She was laid off due to company restructuring after working in her new career for only 5 months. Her career pivot resulted in: A professional path she loves in Learning and Development. A higher salary than she was making pre-baby. A shorter commute and fewer draining hours. A manager/mentor she is aligned with and a position in an organization that's fits with her values. For show notes please visit www.careerfitmom.ca/episode49. Everyone is born curious. So, what happens? Why do some people become less curious than others? For individuals, leaders, and companies to be successful, they must determine the things that hold curiosity hostage. Think of the most innovative companies and you will notice they employ people who do not accept the status quo, they aren't reluctant to change, they evolve with the times, they look for problems to solve, and focus on asking questions. Drawing on decades research and incorporating interviews from some of the top leaders of our time, Hamilton examines the factors that impact curiosity including fear, assumptions, technology, and environment (FATE). Through her ground-breaking research, she has created the Curiosity Code Index (CCI) assessment to determine how these factors have impacted curiosity and to provide an action plan to transform individuals and organizations to help improve areas impacted by curiosity, including innovation, engagement, creativity, and productivity. “I have no special talents. Seeing the Opportunity to Reinvent Your Career

The Development Exponent: A Leadership Perspective

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 16, 2019 34:36

What looks like a career dead zone to the outside world is actually an opportunity to the driven leader. It happens all the time-- a person, most often a woman, takes a professional pause to have children. Once the children are ready for school, or once the person decides it's time to go back, they step back into the professional world only to be confronted with questions like, “What have you been doing recently?” They encounter assumptions that they are too far out of the loop or may not be ready to adjust quickly enough to corporate life. They encounter negative biases. They encounter shut doors. A driven person will not stand in front of a shut door. They will anticipate the challenge and choose to act proactively.  People take professional pauses for a variety of reasons, and these pauses are the perfect time to reflect on where we want our career to go or what we want our new career to be. It is a time to reinvent and to self educate. What the world will see as a listless cocoon, the driven leader will see as the opportunity to become ready for flight. This is what Holly Lehman, a Program Manager at Microsoft, has done. For the past seven years, Holly has been living the Microsoft life, learning and advancing, driven by customer obsession she is now fully ingrained in the Azure Management engineering team. Holly is partnering with the most valued professional (MVP) in the customer community to provide education and receive live feedback between the customer and the engineering team. She manages the Azure Management Insiders program for customers, and engages with the Cloud Data Management MVP Community. Prior to Microsoft, Holly was a hotel manager. She took the opportunity of the professional pause of her maternity leave to reinvent her career. Bruce Holoubek, owner of Contracted Leadership, and Host of The Development Exponent Podcast talks to Holly about her journey into the leadership role she has today to gain insight on the transformation of an emerging leader and the lessons that come from that growth. Identify skills to carry over. A key skill that Holly took from her hotel management job is the ability to connect on a human to human level with people. “You cannot brand yourself as a leader if you are unable to connect on a human level, show understanding and find something in common.” Learn to respect your time-- not manage it. One of the first lessons Holly learned about being a new parent and back at work was on making the shift from being open to working around the clock to becoming a person who can work really hard on a strict schedule. Limiting working hours increased her productivity and tactical thinking. As a result, Holly learned to respect and value her time more. This also forced her to be more present at home in the shorter time she had with her children. By example, this shows her children that one can be a dedicated professional but also a dedicated family person. It shows that we have to respect our time and respect other people's time by being mentally present-- right there in the moment. Looking at our work-life time as “respecting my time” versus “managing my time,” is a more thoughtful and meaningful way to achieve that balance for ourselves and others. For developing leaders, having a manager who asks about the ongoings of life outside of work can be meaningful and helpful in that it creates an understanding of the eb and flow of events and responsibilities that may be influencing work life. Knowing what our people are going through on a weekly basis helps us decide when it's a good time to push someone through a project that will require them to grow, versus assigning something else. It helps us assess needs and strengths. Address the limiting beliefs of emerging leaders. Imposter syndrome is a common limiting belief among emerging leaders. Thinking they are the only one in the room who doesn't know or understand something is limiting and untrue. Another limiting belief is regarding full ownership of their projects: either they feel like they have to take on more than they should (doing too much), or they feel like they can't take on what they should because of some fear of being unable to do it. Tied to this is the fear of delegating. Nudge your emerging leaders out of their boxes and encourage them to delegate creatively-- perhaps even outside of their department. One of the most damaging limiting beliefs is when emerging leaders think they have to know everything and their success is theirs alone. It's a fast way to fail and lose respect because people want leaders who learn from their team, are guided by new ideas, and who allow others to be empowered. Good leaders provide visibility to the people who are there with them. We must share our successes to build our tribes, and in turn our tribes will support us. Shared success feeds into creating mutually meaningful work environments. Make your profession mutually meaningful. We have to believe in the work that we are doing and believe in ourselves by showing up and being authentic every single day. If we believe our jobs have positive influence and help to drive change, we will have inspiration to guide us and help us avoid burnout. Be brave enough to fly high, but don't fly solo-- be willing to take on the risk, take on the tough new project, and be alright with asking for guidance along the way. Many successful leaders would not be where they are today without mentors and a richly developed network. Most importantly, remember that your work has the power to affect the world in a positive way, and you have great things to contribute. Step over the threshold of your fear and walk through that door. You belong where you want to be. ### Share on Social (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook) Professional pauses, such as parental leave, are the perfect time to reflect on where we want our career to go or what we want our new career to be. It is a time to reinvent and self educate. Have you changed your career around after an extended leave? Tell us your story-- comment below! #levelupyourleadership #leadership #contractleaders Looking at our work-life time as “respecting my time” versus “managing my time,” is a more thoughtful and meaningful way to achieve that balance for ourselves and others. #levelupyourleadership #leadership #contractleaders You cannot brand yourself as a leader if you are unable to connect on a human level, show understanding and find something in common. #levelupyourleadership #leadership #contractleaders Be excited to prove the naysayers wrong! We explore why curiosity is such a key trait to develop in relation to innovation and dealing with top business issues. We do a deep dive on the four factors that impact curiosity, and what to do to start growing the curiosity level inside your organization. Here are some of her quotes:“I first started writing the book because I was very interested in what kept people from being curious.I really found four factors impacted curiosity which were Fear, Assumption, Technology and Environment. My hope was to help individuals and organizations to develop what I think is a such a key trait. It's the spark that leads to motivation and to drive and for you to get anywhere with communication, critical thinking, leadership, creativity, teamwork, engagement, you name all the top issues that leadership struggles with.Once you're able to get all those factors in line and then once your innovative you're productive and you know everybody's engaged, it kind of solves all the problems and so that's what I thought was so fascinating. What I was trying to do was just kind of figure out what's the spark behind it all that's that we could fix and, and that's what I kept coming back to was improving curiosity.”During this interview, you will learn three things:That what made you successful in the past, isn’t likely going to help you survive in the future – And growing your curiosity index is the key to your successWhy you have to watch out to avoid aimless curiosity in your organization, and what to do about itThat, a critical way to grow a culture of curiosity starts when top management shows they way – they need to walk the talk.Get related ideas from a few blogs Why your product roadmap fails to deliver remarkable value How to stay relevant in your category? ‘I don’t know where I’m going, but I know I’m going to get there with enthusiasm!’ The path to success is almost never a straight line. In fact, Doug Sandler describes his route as a ‘jumbled mess.’ Doug enjoyed a 30-year career as a deejay, playing at 2500-plus functions. But when his financial planner advised that he be prepared for the next step, Doug realized that he needed a career reinvention. So at 47, he got himself a coach and shifted gears to pursue public speaking. From there, Doug took advantage of opportunities as they presented themselves: He wrote a book, Nice Guys Finish First, and created a podcast, The Nice Guys on Business. The podcast took off when Doug and his co-host realized that their audience was asking questions about the podcasting process. They shifted their focus to provide the content their listeners craved, and their corollary business, Turnkey Podcast, was born. Turnkey helps podcasters in any stage of the process, with a special focus on how to monetize a show. Today Doug joins Emerald to share his definition of ‘finishing first.’ He explains the tenacity it took to start a new career and the organic way that his entrepreneurial venture took shape. Doug discusses the details of Turnkey Podcast, revealing the impetus behind the business as well as the products and services they provide. Evolve Reinventing Leadership - Building Freedom Cultures

There are a number of reasons why leaders decide to reinvent their careers.  For some, their careers have plateaued, keeping them stuck in the same position for far longer than they anticipated.  Other change careers completely, starting over in a new discipline.  Then there are those approaching retirement.

Our guest, Quincy Jones III aka QDIII - Producer and digital/tech entrepreneur. You might not exactly say he came from humble beginnings, as the son of perhaps the greatest music producer the world has known. Young Quincy got to sit in on recording sessions for Michael Jackson's Thriller and tag along with big Quincy backstage with jazz and r&b greats. But, as he puts it, "I had the luxury in my opinion of growing up rich and poor,” spending most of his childhood with his mother in a working class home in Sweden. There, he learned to hustle on his own, as well as to take his talents to the streets, literally, as a champion breakdancer. Before moving back to the States, Quincy had released his first hit song and had already embraced the idea of reinvention, pivoting from dancing to making music. From there, the story just gets more interesting. From being immersed among the pioneers of hip hop to becoming a close friend and collaborator to 2Pac before his death, Quincy found himself at the epicenter of the culture. Next pivot: He leaves production behind and becomes a filmmaker, having tremendous success as one of the genre’s leading documentarians, most notably with the Beef DVD series that chronicled hip hop conflicts from LL and Ice-T to Biggie and 2Pac. And now he’s embarking on a new career developing technologies that leverage his vast experience in entertainment. His first app Wemes (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wemes-create-share-video-memes/id1023485444?mt=8) launched last month. Listen to learn how he’s done all of that, what he learned from mentors like LL Cool J and Ice Cube, and what motivates him to keep going. Leave us a comment about how you liked this episode, your favorite QDIII or QDII song, or just to wish us a happy birthday.
