Gurdip's off this week but Justin is joined by guest (and TCBCast patron!) Darin Evans to take a (not remotely comprehensive) look at the contributions of soprano backing vocalist Millie Kirkham to Elvis' recording career. Millie's distinctive high voice sound is audible on Elvis classics like "Blue Christmas," "She's Not You" and "The Wonder of You" as well as many recordings by other Nashville recording artists, and she is, to note, the only backing vocalist to have recorded & performed with Elvis through all three decades of his career, making her an iconic part of Elvis' musical legacy. Appropriately, Darin highlights the first song Millie recorded with Elvis, 1957's "My Wish Came True" as Song of the Week, while Justin selects Elvis' cover of Billy Swan's crossover one hit wonder, "I Can Help."

Because a wise man learns from his mistakes, but a wiser man learns from other people's mistakes. So let's learn today from our guest speaker Charity Buhrow. Charity is going to talk to us today about Surviving a Narcissistic Mother Charity: Thank you for having me. I'm really excited to be here. Kristina:  I'm sure there is a journey that has gotten you to this place, and I know it's probably a really long story for you, but I really would like to hear how you grew up. Charity: As a kid, we lived in a rural area of Wisconsin. Great childhood, when I look back on it. When I was little, we had go-karts and swimming pools. We lived out in the country, and we rode bikes to go hang out with the friends. As I got older, around eight or nine years old, my mom told me, "I'm your mom first. But we have the potential to be best friends. I want you to tell me everything in anything." Ideal, right? But as I got older, things changed slowly. It was confusing. I would share things with her that were super intimate, but then it would get thrown back in my face. It would throw me off. Self-doubt started to set at a very, very young age. And it was so subtle. There was a time where she bought me a diary. She told me I can keep all my intimate thoughts in that diary and the diary even had a lock on it.  She told me that I don't have to worry about anyone breaking in and reading my personal information.  Then one day,  she started answering my passages of writing. I was like, "Whoa, wait, what?" She would write things back to me like, "You're ungrateful. Maybe if you had not acted like that, I wouldn't have needed to yell." She completely violated my trust on such a deep level.  It was at that moment that distrust started.  Another example is math. I loved math.  My mom told me, "You're so bad at it. You're stupid." That was confusing to me because I had As in school, and my teachers told me I was doing a great job. Later, as a young adult, I ended up in accounting. I kept asking myself, "Why do I have this job? I'm horrible at math." I didn't realize that was residual from her trauma.  I was actually thriving at that job.  Later, I quit. [caption id="attachment_2732" align="alignright" width="300"]Surviving a Narcissistic Mother[/caption] There are more subtle examples. I was really thin growing up. I was a very tall blonde. Many people told me I should model, but my mom didn't want me to be seen as the center of attention.   She told me that because I was blonde, no one would take me seriously. In reality, I am smart!  All of this was so hurtful coming from my mom. Everything was always about her. She would buy my clothes and dress me but tell me not to tell my dad.  She encouraged me to lie to my dad!  That was a struggle!   He was the primary moneymaker, and I liked my dad.  It was hard to lie.  On the outside, we looked like an ideal family.  My friends never believed me. They never saw the bad stuff. My hair and makeup always had to be done.   I would tell her, "Mom, I have this opportunity." She would respond, "No, you can't do it. I don't want them looking at you. I don't want them to judge me based on you." She was also paranoid about others.  She told me not to ever talk about money outside of the house.  Mom said, "They're trying to take our money." I was confused. My grandparents lived five doors down from us. I really wanted to have a relationship with them because they were so close.  I would ask to go visit them, and she would tell me, "No, no, no, no, no! They're spying on us. They break into our house. You can't talk to them. They hate me." You see, it was always about her. She got a part-time job one time at one of the local taverns. People loved her great personality. But she came home one day, and all her friends turned on her. They finally saw through her lies and deception. Then it really started to spiral downhill pretty quick. She started videotaping the neighbors. She would watch the videos and be like, "Look what they're doing. I can't believe they're doing that." She also stopped taking me to dance class and blamed it on my dad.  I love dance class. He wanted us to be active, but she wouldn't admit that she didn't like taking the time out of her day to drive me back and forth from dance. Eventually, I realized that my self-esteem had plummeted. By the time I was 19 years old, I was terrified of judgment and thought everyone was out to get me. I didn't think I'd ever make anything of myself. I didn't even go to college because she told me she would only help me pay for school if I went to her school of choice and studied what she wanted me to study. She also told me I was never going to make it.  One day, she even spent all the money in my saving that I had saved from work.   I was desperate, so I moved out as soon as I could.  Kristina: I get this feeling that you felt like a puppet. [caption id="attachment_2736" align="alignright" width="300"]Surviving a Narcissistic Mother[/caption] Charity: Yes. Kristina: If someone hearing your story right now thinks they might be victims of a narcissistic parent, but they still aren't quite sure, how would you tell them it feels?  What other adjectives could you give to how that felt? Charity: Confusion is a big thing. It is an emotional roller coaster. One minute you feel love; the next, you are full of shame. You feel responsible for their suffering and their pain. It's very disheartening. You beat yourself up for it. Kristina: What are some red flags? Charity: They were everywhere!  Now I see them, but then it was mainly a deep unsettled feeling. The confusion is big.  I would tell someone that it is a sign when their parent gives you this bad feeling repetitively. You're always being blamed, and they are never at fault. You're going to start feeling crazy. Like you are the problem. Kristina: I can see that one of the hardest things about this as a child would be, wanting to get help from somebody, but knowing that whoever you talk to,  they're not going to believe you. Your mom is just too likable! Charity:  Yes. Oh, that is a big one. That's a huge one. I ran into that roadblock. I would go to someone, and I would explain what was going on. They would tell me I was being hypersensitive. Five years later, many came back and apologized. I would tell others that you need to keep going until you find someone willing to listen. After a while, you burnt out if no one hears you. I thought, "I don't want to go home. I don't want to deal with this. I don't want to have to explain this to another person yet again, just to be shot down." You start to doubt yourself a lot, and you start to feel like you're crazy. Kristina:  What was your 'A-ha' moment that made you realize you needed help? Charity: My first marriage. When I graduated, I moved out three days after graduation, I could not get out of that house fast enough. My mom kept trying to come over to my new home.  She criticized everything. The dishes weren't done, the decorating wasn't good enough, it wasn't clean enough… That was MY space! I didn't need her opinions.  I told her to go home several times.  Then I stopped going over to her house too. I started to notice that I felt better the more I pulled away. Then I met a guy.  We decided we wanted to have kids, but something just didn't sit right. I got pregnant anyway, and we got married because I panicked.  I didn't want my kids to grow up being ridiculed like I was for having parents with different last names.  Then I had my daughter.  I was holding her in my arms, and I  looked over him and thought, "What did I do?" That was my aha moment!  That's when I realized I had married a person just like my mom.  Oh, crap!  I realized I had a couple choices. I can let this make me really bitter and really unhappy and stay stuck, OR I can use this as a stepping stone to get better. Kristina: What are those first steps to recovery?   Charity: Recognize that you are not at fault.  The second step is to find a doctor. I found a primary care physician. She was fantastic. It took me nine tries to find her, but when I found her, I knew that she would listen to me. She was absolutely amazing. I had thrown off my back, had two young children. My fibroid was all over the board. I was a hot mess. I was replaying my childhood with my new husband and blown away by how similar it was. He kept telling me I was crazy and needed drugs. I walked into the doctor's office crying.  Fortunately, the doctor saw past my physical pain to my emotional pain and encouraged me to see a counselor.  Find someone you trust and find someone you're comfortable with to support you and help you dissect your pain.  It doesn't have to be a counselor. It can also be a coach. Find someone and get help. Kristina: You have so much to offer with your experiences to help empower others. Charity:  It took a few years, but I finally came to peace with my mom.  I realize now that my mom didn't know what she was doing. She didn't set out to purposely harm me. Her behaviors were stemmed from how she was raised. I don't hold ill will.  My experiences have taught me how to be a good mom. I can't help but feel grateful for what I have been through.  It made me who I am today.  Kristina: It feels like you have healed, and it is great to hear you don't have resentment toward your mother.  If people resonate with your story today and want to reach out and learn more from you, how would they do that? Charity: The best way to get a hold of me would be my website is www.rzempowerment.com Kristina:  Thank you, Charity! It was a pleasure to have you on the show.   And until next time, you got this parents. We're just here to help!

In this episode, I speak with world-class pianist and composer Kenny Werner who's prolific output of compositions, recordings and publications continue to impact audiences around the world, and author of the impactful book, Effortless Mastery, Liberating the Master Musician Within.  In our conversation, Kenny expands on: His incredible journey, leading to the exploration of effortless mastery How the need to play well is the thing we should – yet will never – surrender How focus behaves like water How to let “the master” play Fear-based practicing and performing How detachment can help us play better than ever & where lack of flow in performance comes from Effortless Mastery in a nutshell: Go into the space (it's easier than you think, and Kenny shows us how…) and play a note in that state Move around the instrument freely while in that space (think Ouija Board! Or try playing something as fast as possible.) Play something you know really well in that state of effortless mastery Practice in that state (and the state becomes your teacher!)   Kenny is an artist and pedagogue of great depth and I know the things he talks about today could transform your approach to practicing and performing!      Frustrated with your playing?  Unsatisfied with you career?  Ready for a change? His prolific output of compositions, recordings and publications continue to impact audiences around the world. Kenny was recently awarded the 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship Award for his seminal work, No Beginning No End. No Beginning No End is a musical journey exploring tragedy and loss, death and transition, and the path from one lifetime to the next. Utilizing over 70 musicians, Kenny's third album for Half Note Records is an expansive composition featuring Joe Lovano, Judy Silvano, Wind Ensemble, Choir and String Quartet. Born in Brooklyn, NY on November 19, 1951 and then growing up in Oceanside, Long Island, Kenny began playing and performing at a young age, first recording on television at the age of 11. Although he studied classical piano as a child, he enjoyed playing anything he heard on the radio. In high school and his first years of college he attended the Manhattan School of Music as a classical piano major. His natural instinct for improvisation led Kenny to the Berklee School of Music in 1970. There he sought tutelage of the renowned piano teacher Madame Chaloff. Her gracious wisdom and inspiration became a driving force in Kenny's conception: music conscious of its spiritual intent and essence. From Boston, Kenny traveled to Brazil with the saxophonist Victor Assis Brasil. There he met Victor's twin brother, Brazilian pianist Joao Assis Brasil. He studied with Joao, who provided another piece of the puzzle for Kenny's conception that would lead to Effortless Mastery, his landmark opus on how to allow the master musician from within to manifest. Kenny started his own trio in 1981 with drummer Tom Rainey and bassist Ratzo Harris. The Kenny Werner Trio matured for fourteen years, wowing audiences in America and Europe and recording four albums along the way. Kenny had written many original compositions featuring trios and other small group configurations, but in the mid 1980s, he became the pianist for the Mel Lewis Orchestra (currently known as the Village Vanguard Orchestra). Challenged by Mel and Bob Brookmeyer to write for the band, he produced his first compositions and arrangements for jazz orchestra, consequently leading him to write for the major bands in Europe including the Cologne, Danish, and Stockholm Jazz Orchestras, The Umo Jazz Orchestra of Finland and several times as the guest composer and soloist with the Metropole Orchestra of Holland. Since then Werner has had many commissions to write for large ensembles such as jazz orchestras, full orchestras and most recently, wind ensemble, choir and string quartet as featured on his latest CD, No Beginning, No End. Several outstanding musical partnerships began in the 1990s. Kenny continues to play duo with Toots Thielemans, the legendary harmonica player. For twenty years he has played with and arranged for Betty Buckley, a Broadway legend. They made six albums together and she has sung his arrangements for small band and orchestras across the globe.  He also has had a nearly forty-year friendship and musical collaboration with Joe Lovano. They have recorded on a number of each other's projects. In 2000, Kenny formed a new trio with Ari Hoenig on drums and Johannes Weidenmueller on bass.  They played nearly a decade together and released three albums, with Kenny acting as composer, arranger, and pianist.  Their last album, Peace - Live at the Blue Note, released in 2004, began a wonderful relationship with Half Note Records, the recording arm of the Blue Note Jazz Club.  He created three CDs before the release of his masterpiece, No Beginning No End.  In 2007, Kenny Werner released his first album for Blue Note Records. Lawn Chair Society, featuring Chris Potter, Dave Douglas, Scott Colley, and Brian Blade, received critical acclaim for its fusion of electro and acoustic elements. Kenny's groundbreaking work on Improvisation, Effortless Mastery - Liberating the Master Musician Within, was published in 1996. Using his life experiences as a microscope into the artist's mind, Effortless Mastery is a guide to distill the emotional, spiritual, and psychological aspects of an artists' life. Today it is one of the most widely read books on music and improvisation. The book is a required reading at many universities. Werner, without intention, touched off a revolution of inspiring musicians to do inner work on the mind, body, and soul in attempt to upgrade their musical experience from the mundane to the profound. The book is also popular with artists of other mediums and business professionals.  Kenny continues to teach and give clinics in the United States and abroad. He is currently on the Jazz Piano Faculty at New York University.     Visit www.mindoverfinger.com and sign up for my newsletter to get your free guide to a super productive practice using the metronome!  This guide is the perfect entry point to help you bring more mindfulness and efficiency into your practice and it's filled with tips and tricks on how to use that wonderful tool to take your practicing and your playing to new heights!   Don't forget to visit the Mind Over Finger Resources' page to check out amazing books recommended by my podcast guests, as well as my favorite websites, cds, the podcasts I like to listen to, and the practice and podcasting tools I use everyday!  Find it here: www.mindoverfinger.com/resources!   Join the Mind Over Finger Tribe for additional resources on practice and performing If you enjoyed the show, please leave a review on iTunes!  I truly appreciate your support!     THANK YOU: A HUGE thank you to my fantastic producer, Bella Kelly! Having a hit record is hard enough – try doing it twice!  Today’s special episode is filled with the stories behind the songs you know so well… from the artists that you don’t.  How did the real-life “Sharona” and “Jenny” feel about the songs written for them?  (Spoiler – one of them loved it. The other? Not so much.) Also - What group turned their failure as a bar band into a #1 hit?  And why did one group have to hide their identity before a radio station agreed to play their song? Plus, Ivan from Men Without Hats explains how getting thrown out of Ottawa discos inspired “The Safety Dance” and Marc Almond from Soft Cell talks about the surprising success of “Tainted Love”.  We’ve also got the stories behind “Video Killed The Radio Star”, “Shannon”, “I Can Help”, “Harden My Heart”, “What I Am”, plus the disco smashes “Knock On Wood” and “I Love The Night Life” (which both Christopher & Tom try to sing… and it’s not pretty).  And we end it all with One Hit Wonder Cool Song Facts!

EPISODE 8: STRUGGLING TO FIND YOUR PURPOSE IN YOUR CAREER & LIFE? How to Land Your Next Job & Get What You Want!  Please note this episode has no editing. I felt I like I need to connect with all of you and basically jumped on the laptop, put on the headphone and clicked record. I hope you don't mind. :) Hello Chit Chatters! Life is all about living, learning and growing. I have been doing a lot of growing and learning, but also self-reflecting. I learned recently that a part of me is more vulnerable than I thought it was. Like many others out there, I have been struggling with the death of George Floyd and seeking how to support my brothers and sisters of color. I've been struggling with how I can speak what I am feeling and how to be mindful and empathetic to black people.  I shared perhaps one of my most vulnerable posts on Instagram recently that was really eye opening. I am a Hispanic 36 year old gay millennial. I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. I identify as a person of color.  Those words made me cry when I wrote them. I cried a little even writing them again. Yes my skin color is lighter than my brothers and sisters of color. How can I help in the movement of #BlackLivesMatter? How can I stand with my brothers and sisters? I USED MY VOICE!  I spoke up on a few occasions over the past few days and shared how white supremacy and white privilege can't continue. How we need to have conversations that are hard and definitely powerful but we need to discuss the implicit bias, we need to talk about the microaggressions and the systemic-racism. These conversations are learning opportunities for all.  I am no expert and don't pretend to me. But I am sure passionate about social issues, creating change for diversity, equity and inclusion. I have fought for this since I was 11 years old!  Now this episode is 20 minutes long and I don't go too deep into everything regarding the #BlackLivesMatter, but I share a few thoughts on how I have been feeling. I can tell you I am in pain and deeply saddened. At the same time I am hopeful for the change that we are creating in our world right now!  I also talked about what to expect with the show in the upcoming weeks. I have an episode coming up on Monday with two of my colleagues where we dive in on how white people can help in the #BlackLivesMatter movement and they speak to their experiences as African Americans in their community.  We will also be having some live coaching sessions! I am excited to bring you these 3 amazing coaching sessions with some gals that I met in my Facebook Community.  PLUS… This episode goes into detail on how I can help you discover your purpose in life and your career. Are you currently jobless, unemployed or seeking and stuck! I CAN HELP! Let's set up a coaching session and get you employed, fulfilled and unstuck!  I talk about creating the perfect resume for your dream job, SEO and ATS. I am an expert at resume and cover letter writing and my strategies are proven to get you the interview!! This episode is filled with emotion, energy and passion from beginning to end. APRIL STARGATE CLOSING - Moon-50/50 Clearing Obstacles with GANESHA, Energy Update, Tarot & Oracle On 4.14.2020 we are having our "landing" day for our April Stargate. It's been 10 full days in the gate and of course, much has happened. Timelines and connections made, revelations and associations, fears brought up, foundations shaken, a rising in the collective consciousness...Lots. We'll get into specific peaks over these last 10 days. In this space and time, during the Stargate, and one that you are a part of (even if you didn't participate)-we've had upgrades of the highest variety in the form of implanted shields brought to us from the other side of the veil with El Morya he is an Ascended Master, who lived in the late 1800's. We were guided to him through one of my books during the Live for The Full moon, and immediately everything shifted. We met with him in meditation, one of my quickest ones ever-but OH SO POWERFUL!  This happened not only once, but twice in my Live Events, one on The Full Moon and again for Easter.  Talk about activations and MAJOR upgrades, grounding and empowerment-it was and is off the scale, as we are still receiving and integrating these deeply embedded shields into our energy bodies, as described in the meditation. So if you missed that-act accordingly to your guidance.  Also, with our LANDING DAY-and not so coincidentally, its the day our moon is at 50%. Imagine a Stargate landing on a 50% day? Hmmm...Let's be in balance. This day is also symbolized by GANESHA.  Ganesh coming through to me tonight to bring to light the association with THE DEVIL card in Tarot, which is The 15th Key of the Tree of Life/Qabalah. I did a podcast episode (#64) that I published on 4.12.2020, please take a listen to get better acquainted with The Devil card and what it represents as GANESHA works in relations to expel the obstacles that are The Devil.  More on this in my next podcast that I will be posting shortly, the evening of 4.13.2020.  Please take a listen to that as well, especially if you plan to join us tomorrow, 4.14.2020 at 4 PM for the Live Event. It's April...March is over...Finally. Finally? I can understand wanting to move on from March, it was one of the harshest months for the collective in a long, long time. Globally we are in the beginnings of a massive paradigm shift that is effecting all of us, all over the world, every race and every religion, every age range and any orientation. There's a shift in consciousness like we have not known in our lifetimes but for many of us we have been waiting for the great global shift. The deconstruction and creation of our future is happening, a cleaning up of our ways of being and thinking and connecting is taking a new form, and the more we go with this flow, the easier it will be. That doesn’t mean to be passive, it means to be in awareness, to adapt to a new framework of being. Much is up in the air for most people. Many questions, little answers. Not a lot of happy but a lot of fear and projecting. People looking for reasons to lash out. And they are. There's even people who are looking to infect others with COVID-19. On purpose. Imagine that. There's more than you know, so please-be aware of this grim reality. Today is April 1, 2020. And we get into the energies of the collective looking at the different elements & signs. In April we have Aries and Taurus signs & birthdays and their elements of Fire and Earth. What a great time for these signs and elements to do their magic. Remember, regardless of the realities, we must rise above and see things from a higher perspective, be in acceptance instead of resistance, be open instead of closed off in fear. We always have choices. ALWAYS. Hello Soul Family, In this episode we get into Twitter (new for me) and the latest with our new imposed Social Distancing orders extended through April 30th, I go into some of the latest happenings in the land and my passionate thoughts on it all. Don't say I didn't warn you. Rawr. Then around 30 minutes in, we dive into my book, "The Qabalistic Tarot, A Text Book of Mystical Philosophy" by Robert Wang It's an amazing book with deep insight into The Tarot. We get into the hows and why's of the system of Tarot, how it associates to The Qabalah and The Tree of Life. For those of you who have yet to put faith in it, this will explain more about how it works, and for those who already know of it's magic, this will only solidify it for you. Sorry for my brain scramble at the end, my eyes gave up on me and I had the hardest time reading that last paragraph! Next up: A Deep Qabalist Dive into The Devil. Today is National Doctor Day, I want to send a ray of LOVE LIGHT to all doctors and nurses fighting for our families all over the world. You are amazing. Thank you, you're amazing. In uncertain times, everybody needs some help, not just from our friends. Dominic talks about our need to maintain the status quo, also the the legendary English band who opened Live Aid in 1985 with “Rocking All Over the World”. While times can be uncertain and difficult, help is at hand. Unsure how to invest? Dominic’s theme song could be Billy Swan’s 1974 single “I Can Help”.

Not a normal episode.  It’s less than 36 hours since the horrific shootings in Las Vegas and as of last night I wasn’t going to record this week, I was going to put it off a week.  My kindergartener just had his first lock-down drill at school and I don’t even know how what to say to him. I’ve had that stunned, frozen, deer-in-the-headlights feeling since yesterday.  Heck, for the last week or two what with everything that’s been happening in the world recently.  I couldn’t sleep last night and sometime around 4am I remembered that Mr Rodgers meme that goes around after every tragedy, in times of trouble look for the helpers. From the PBS website “Fred Rogers often told this story about when he was a boy and would see scary things on the news: “My mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.” “ I decided at 4am this morning that I am NOT going to sit here feeling helpless and afraid and frozen.  I am going to help someone.  I may not have a million dollars to donate to Puerto Rico or be able to drive to Vegas to donate blood, but I can knit a NICU baby a hat.  I can donate blood here.  I can make a knitted knocker for a breast cancer survivor.  I CAN HELP. And I want you to help, too.  Today I’m starting a charity KAL and I want you to join me. There is something you can do.  BE A HELPER.  Donate blood locally.  Make a Knitted Knocker for a woman with breast cancer.  Knit or weave a scarf or crochet a blanket for a homeless shelter.  Knit a hat for refugees.  Make a preemie hat for the local NICU.  I don’t care what you do, just do something for someone else.  Have another great charity idea?  Wonderful!  Share it in the Ravelry group in the chatter thread.  Go do something for your fellow humans. Here are the knittiy gritty details: One entry per FO or photo proof of blood donation. Wips are fine. Double dipping in other KALs is fine. Knit, crochet or weave anything you want, just post a picture in the Finished Objects thread in my Knitting on The Run / Windswept Designs group on Ravelry and tell us what charity you are donating it to. I’ve already got a gradient kit from Birdies Knits and a skein of silk from Ito Yarns as prizes, and Sarah from KnitWit Designs and CC from JavaPurl designs have graciously offered pattern prizes.  I will list all the prizes in detail in my next episode. Interested I donating a prize or know someone who might? PM me on Ravelry or Instagram, I’m WindsweptMonique on both. Now go out there and do some good in this world.
