This week I sat down with Bobby Hobert AKA Bobbbaaaay. Bobby is a dear friend of mine and an outstanding motivational content creator. In this conversation, Bobby and I dive deep into the practice of setting boundaries and what the difference is between setting the boundaries yourself and having the world dictate those boundaries for you. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it. More of Bobby's work can be found here: https://www.instagram.com/bobbbaaaay/ https://www.tiktok.com/@bobbbaaaay
Mental health is no joke. This isn't a podcast to chat about it because “everyone is talking about it”. This is a podcast to talk about it because it's real shit. I've had my own personal journey with high highs and low lows and it's been quite a ride. Over the years I've gotten much better at being aware of what benefits my mental health and what hurts it. Today I want to discuss why it's important that we speak up & seven habits that I have found to be beneficial to my personal mental health. Disclaimer : I am by no means an expert, this episode is purely me speaking on my experiences. We all have beautiful minds, lets learn to take care of them. 7 habits that help my mental health : 1 : Daily sweat. Not only does it help my physical but also my mental fitness. Every day the workout may be different in what I'm doing or how long but I try to get in something. 2 : Meditation. Just 10 minutes a day has allowed me to be more in control of emotions like anger, jealously, sadness, frustration & more. 3 : Healthy diet. Eating clean foods & drinking liquids that are good for me help me keep a clear mind. Burgers, fries, high sugar drinks or alcohol completely changes my mood which impacts my mental health. 4 : Express How I Feel. Whether it's talking to someone, writing in a journal, speaking my mind on a podcast or sharing something on social media, it's crucial that I let out exactly what's on my mind. 5 : Becoming An Optimist Thought Coach. Even when life is going perfectly, I can slip and fall into a dark hole. The best way to for me to dig myself out is positive thoughts and self compassion for myself. 6 : Edit your peers. By being very aware and taking note of how people make me feel, I then am able to eliminate those who do not bring positive & optimistic energy into my life. 7 : Content consumption. By being aware of what I am consuming in the media, I can make sure my time, energy and attention isn't going towards things that impact my mental health negatively. Challenge for the listeners Take 10 mins within the next 24hrs to consider your own mental health. Are you carving out time for habits that make you feel good? Have you procrastinated cutting out habits that make you feel bad? Take sometime to be honest with yourself about it and make those necessary adjustments moving forward. Stop caring about peoples opinions and start living a life that is true to you. I've been there before where I cared more about what people thought instead of listening to what I truly wanted. I was allowing people to be in the driver seat of my life by making decisions for me instead of me making them for myself . The moment I flipped this around and started only focusing on what I wanted was when I began to live a life authentic to me. Today we're going to dive into the four reminders that help me ignore peoples opinions, which allows me to follow my heart and interests. Everyone in this world is entitled to their opinion but that doesn't mean we should or have to listen to it. In order to truly live a life authentic to us, we must be fully confident and happy with the choices we make within all buckets of our life. Yes, it's totally okay to seek advice or feedback from people that we trust but at the end of the day, our decisions should be our decisions and not theirs. These are the 4 reminders to help ignore peoples opinions : 1 : The man in the arena theory. If someone is not already seeking a path similar to us or has even taken that first step, ignore their opinion. We should only value those who are or have walked a similar path before us. 2 : Death is inevitable, following our gut should be too. Accepting that someday we're going to die should give us the permission to truly live a life doing the things we want to do regardless of what people have to say about it. 3 : We're the authors of our own book. We're writing the script each and everyday and our script is unique and one of a kind. It's okay that in the past we have allowed others to write part of our story for us but starting today and moving forward, we take back full responsibility of writing it ourselves. 4 : Nobody has the answers. Some peoples opinions may be more trusted than others but we must still remember that they too may not even be fully correct Challenge for the listeners Spend 10 minutes within the next 24hrs and consider are you living a life based on your choices or the choices of others? This can be a bit scary to think about but seriously take the time to really be honest with yourself. When it comes to career, financial decisions, dating, life experiences, what you do on the weekend etc… are you doing to because it's what YOU truly want to do OR is it because it's what everyone else wants you to do? Have you gone long periods of time without hooking up with someone and thought to yourself “What am I doing wrong?” Have you ever compared yourself to your friends who always seem to pop from one relationship to the next and you think "why aren’t I?" Have you ever wondered if you were EVER going to find “the perfect match” or maybe it seems like it’s never going to happen? Listen here folks, if there’s anyone that gets it… it’s ya boy BOBBBAAAAY! I’m here to reassure you beautiful people that you’re smart, you’re unique and it’s NOT YOU… it’s the world buying you more time for yoooself! Today I want to talk about what I learned from going 1000+ days without hooking up with any woman. Topics : 1000+ days of celibacy created the space for me to double, triple & quadruple down on myself Every ounce of time, energy & emotion was reinvested into my ideas and what I thought I wanted to do with my life Some of the biggest lessons I learned : (1) Sex Is Cool, Chasing Dreams Is Better : I sacrificed short-term pleasure for long-term purpose driven fulfillment and I wouldn’t have it any other way because it gave me the space, time & energy to double down on myself. (2) Our Happiness Is Not Found In Someone Else : Having that significant other should only enhance our happiness… it shouldn’t be our lifeline or the only way to put a smile on our face. Taking the time to find what makes US happy will allow us to then share it with a special someone when the time is right. (3) We’re The Creator Of Our Story : We control whether we see a moment or situation in our life as something negative or positive. Instead of thinking I was unattractive or not intelligent because I wasn’t attracting women to me, I flipped the script and realized I was just busy doubling down on myself. Is there a new habit you’ve been trying to implement but you aren’t seeing the progress you’d hope for? Maybe a new years resolution to workout more, eat a cleaner diet, start that passion project you’ve always wanted to start? I think we all understand that NONE of our goals are going to happen overnight but yet from us consistency showing up over a short, medium or long period of time depending on the goal. Today I’m introducing you to The Two Day Rule. This rule is going to help you stay accountable AND help you make progress!! Topics : “I’ve trained myself to take the long view, about how important it is to stay focused on your goals rather than getting hung up on the daily ups & downs” - Barack Obama Discipline is my middle name Our goals are unachievable / unattainable without this secret sauce The Two Day Rule Concept : We may miss, skip or take a day off but we may NEVER miss back to back days Lessons from implementing this rule into my life : (1) Small Wins Are Rocket Fuel : By focusing on what I can do TODAY, it’s easier for me to show up to do the actual work (2) Pick Up Where You Left Off : Giving ourselves the ability to take a day off when needed allows us to take rest when it’s necessary & not feel guilty about it (3) Remind Yourself Of Where You Started : Seeing how much progress we’ve made since we started gives us an extra boost of confidence that we DO have what it takes “Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.” - Bill Gates Challenge for the listeners : Tag me on your IG story @Bobbbaaaay & let me know how you plan to use the two day rule Questions from The BMC Kristopher Avilla : How to regain motivation? Someone asked me on IG Live what’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned from podcasting and it’s for sure the importance of consistency. I know that as long as I continue to show up every day and put in the necessary work consistently then I can accomplish ANY goal I have and so can you. Podcast Outline Episode 3 Recap (1:15) Todays topic - the importance of consistency (8:30) Why we NEED to keep showing up regardless of the results I’ve manifested ALL of my dreams by staying consistent & NOT giving up (14:20) Getting into my dream college Bentley University after being denied Building Purpose in the Youth Podcast from the ground up Making a living as a full-time creator for Liquid I.V. What I’ve realized about consistency (18:30) Key to accomplishing ANY goal We NEED to become obsessive The inspiration comes IN the progress of doing It’s NOT as pretty as it might seem It’s GOOD to rest What we HATE about consistency (24:10) We NEED to be patient Not getting the results we’re looking for TODAY The process can seem boring or frustrating Moments we’re unmotivated & don’t want to put in the work Best practices to stay consistent (31:10) Build routines in our day/week where it’s non-negotiable we HAVE to do it Focus on 1-3 things you can do RIGHT NOW We NEED to hold ourselves accountable We accept that some days will be BETTER than others STOP comparing yourself to other people We SHOW UP everyday & put in the work We need to ask ourselves daily : how bad do WE WANT IT? One of the biggest shifts I’ve had in my life over the past couple years is the amount of alcohol I consume, I’ve cut back tremendously. What really woke me up was doing Sober October back in 2019 and cutting out all booz for 30 days straight. 3. Alcohol Outline Quick Recap from Episode 2 - Morning Routines (0:15) Todays podcast is focused on alcohol (2:15) I’ve experienced both sides of drinking Side 1 - the unforgettable nights Side 2 - nights we’re drinking for all the wrong reasons I cut back A LOT on drinking alcohol to focus on myself (12:05) The scary truths (13:05) I’ve had family members die, get DUI’s, lost careers, ruin relationships etc from booz I’ve been behind the wheel when I shouldn’t / been in a car with someone who shouldn’t have been either I’ve drank beyond my limits to the point I’ve blacked out I’ve used it as a form of escapism from things that I’ve dealing with in my life What I’ve realized about myself with drinking (22:50) I can only drink in moderation or else it can become a problem Depending on the situation it’s better for me NOT touch it at all Alcoholism is a disease that I think can pass on from generation to generation Moving to LA helped me cut back on drinking significantly (25:30) I lived with Dylan (who has never drank) & Steve (who rarely does). Felt like an outcast if I was to drink solo First night out in LA, I missed a handful for networking opportunities because i was too busy drinking. Hard but valuable lesson to learn. Driving for Uber full-time, I worked every Friday & Saturday night I surrounded myself with go-getters, hustlers & passionate people Alcohol can bring people together for the right reasons or can be the only reason (32:20) One common goal : to drink & go out But would we still be hanging with these people if we removed the booz? Now I drink to REWARD myself for a great week (34:15) Sober October in 2019 was incredibly beneficial for me (34:55) 30 days of no booz The benefits from doing it I slept better every night, I saved $$$, I didn’t waste time hungover / unmotivated, made better eating decisions, energy levels were consistent everyday, had better headspace to think / create & I realized I didn’t need it to survive Cutting off drinking completely (39:40) Alcohol is the cherry on top. It’s not necessary but it’s appreciated. I try to avoid at all costs during business environments Bearded Man Community Q’s (43:15) Does it take time and space to break the cycle of being addicted to drinking? @JoeySher37 3 internal benefits of being sober for 30 days? Things you feel but people can’t see? @JordanTarver (46:40) How easy is it for you to enjoy nights being sober compared to them when you were drinking? @Ben_Bradfordd (47:50) What’s the worst alcohol experience you’ve had? @NickCincotta (50:05) When did you realize it was a problem? It’s social and fun to have but when is it excessive? @TylerxJay (52:35) We have to be responsible with it. Self control = key 2 enjoy @Aalbergarcia Big takeaways (56:40) Moderation with alcohol is key It should be a treat to reward ourselves I can’t control past decisions but I can control todays / future ones Would you still be around certain people if we removed the alcohol? You DON’T need it to survive Episode wrap-up (59:10) Today was the last podcast EVER recorded in the bedrudio at the content crib Hope this pod gave you guys/gals some insight on alcohol Please screenshot & post this podcast to your IG story tagging me! @Bobbbaaay If I provided enough Bearded Wisdom, plz leave a 1 sentence review on the iTunes Podcast App! Morning Routines Outline Feedback from Episode 1 was GREAT! (0:10) Today’s Episode is about Morning Routines (3:10) Philosophy I live by - “You win the morning, you win the day” These routines “prime” you for the day It’s NOT About What Time You Get Up At (4:30) It’s about what you do within the first 1-3 hours of your day Past Morning Routines That Did NOT Work For Me (7:15) Wake up & work immediately My Current Morning Routines (11:50) 5am wake-up, meditate, journal, podcasts & gym Big takeaways from my routine (24:50) No social media or texts It’s MY time to get prepared for the day ahead of me How to get better with YOUR morning routine (26:15) Try different routines to see what works best for you Less decisions help you flow How to get up earlier (28:40) Be a SAVAGE & change alarm clock to the desired time. Stay disciplined and get UP! Get up earlier in 15 minute intervals until you reach desired time. Questions from the Bearded Man Community (34:55) How does your night routine fit into your morning routine? What happens to your morning routine when you have a long night or a change in schedule? @Kwak3s What keeps you motivated to do it every morning? @JVolp07 (38:30) Can routines lead to lack of self awareness? @Patquigley_1 (39:05) To caffeinated every morning or not? @Kennahhazy (41:15) Episode Wrap-up (42:45) —- Help support this podcast! This past Saturday, August 31st, we celebrated the 3rd year anniversary of this podcast. With wanting to create a special piece about what the journey has been like getting the podcast to this point, I brought in my best friend, Dylan Reese who is an extremely talented recording artist that I live with at the Content Crib. He was a huge inspiration for me in launching this podcast and has been with me along the ride since the launch in 2016. We discuss: What inspired the podcast to start The challenges faced in Year 1 in Boston The transition to Los Angeles for Year 2 Building on the relationships I had What the goal is for Year 4 My biggest hurdle is that I am my biggest critic We also discuss how consistency builds confidence, building an idea from the ground up, intent > results, pushing outside of our comfort zone and much more. - If you enjoy this podcast, please leave us a 1 sentence review on the iTunes Podcast App with your honest feedback OR screenshot this Episode, post it to your Instagram Story tagging @Bobbbaaaay! - Support the Bearded Man Content via Patreon! This Saturday, August 31, will mark the 3 year anniversary of launching this podcast. It amazes me how fast time can fly by when you’re head down, focused and putting in that work day after day trying to build your baby into a monster. Since the jump, I’ve treated this project as if my back was against the wall and the only direction I could move was forward. The mindset was, there is no option B, we will find a way to make this work - to go all in. So what does it take to go all in? JZAC is a hip-hop artist from New Hampshire. During his sophomore year at Plymouth State University he recorded his first song on his friends Macbook internal microphone. The passion grew quickly and so he decided to go all in and bought himself recording equipment, software and began investing all of his time and energy into the craft. Graduating with an Integrated Marketing & Communications degree, he worked at a local Frito-Lays warehouse and Market Basket to continue funding the music career. What helped gain him exposure early on was creating freestyle videos that would go viral on Twitter. With all the inbound traffic he was getting from the videos, he was prepared and had some of his newest projects and singles for people to check out or music videos they could watch. Fast forward seven plus years since he started writing and recording, he’s now living in LA full-time off of his music. What he believes separates himself from other artists is his ability to be honest and authentic by telling his story and his truths. He hopes the music inspires and is relatable to what other people may be going through in their life. In this episode he discusses the importance of shooting your shot, why we must always be prepared and ready to go, why we shouldn’t be afraid to step outside of our comfort zone, hit “post” and keep it moving and even if the path isn’t clear, create the blueprint. - If you enjoy this podcast, please leave us a 1 sentence review on the iTunes Podcast App with your honest feedback OR screenshot this Episode, post it to your Instagram Story tagging @JZACMusic & @PurposeintheYouth! - Connect with JZAC! I treat the content I consume on social media as if it’s a diet. I’ve been constantly cutting out all the junk and doing my best to only consume the “pieces” that are helping me, inspiring me or entertaining me. This isn’t about me trying to be the “cool” kid in town that follows less people than the number of people that follow the bearded man. This is about me getting super disciplined about the images, videos, text etc that I consume on a day to day basis. All of these pieces of content are fueling my mind and I want that premium quality baby, FILL ME UP! For the people or pages I do follow, I let their success inspire me to keep going. Thank you for the daily inspo! Seeing these people succeed in all areas of life gets me hyped! There is no time to fall into the comparison trap of getting jealous, there’s only time for me to make moves myself. If I’ve realized anything it’s that there’s enough room for everyone to win. Period. It doesn't matter what your career goals might be. If you see someone doing something you want to do, go do it. Let them be the example that it’s possible! - If you enjoy this podcast, please leave us a 1 sentence review on the iTunes Podcast App with your honest feedback OR screenshot this Episode, post it to your Instagram Story tagging @Bobbbaaaay! - Support the Bearded Man Content via Patreon! Peiman Raf is the Co-Founder of Madhappy, an optimistic lifestyle brand. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 2016, he became an Investment Banking Analyst for Jefferies Financial Group in NYC. Just 3 months into his position and not feeling himself, he took a leave of absence to return home to Los Angeles, CA to see doctors about what he was going through. Feeling better and in a much clearer headspace, he decided to leave his position completely and stay in LA. Wanting to create a brand around optimism while shining light on mental health in a positive way, Peiman, his brother Noah Raf and friends Joshua Sitt and Mason Spector came together to create Madhappy. Starting with just a hoodie, hat and t-shirt, they have evolved into offering head to toe apparel. Their Classic line is minimal, comfy and curated to be worn for multiple occasions. Since launch in April of 2017, they’ve hosted 9 pop-up events in New York, Miami, Aspen and Los Angeles. Whether it’s panels at their pop-up events, hosting mediation courses or curating positivity in their content, they’re the local optimistic group. In this episode Peiman discusses the importance of moving on and starting a new chapter, the reality that everyone experiences some form of mental health, why it’s okay to put down the phone and disconnect, having a competitive mindset to do whatever it takes and why we should all strive to make the world a more optimistic place. - If you enjoy this podcast, please leave us a 1 sentence review on the iTunes Podcast App with your honest feedback OR screenshot this Episode, post it to your Instagram Story tagging @PeimanRaf & @PurposeintheYouth! - Connect with Peiman! The key is creating routines that reinforce our new habits that will help us achieve whatever our goals might be. Routines Breed Habits: Write A Contract To Yourself (enforces commitment) This is what I want to do and there is no option B Stick it to your wall, background on Phone, sticky note in car Pick a certain day of week or time of day you’re going to do “the thing” (reinforces discipline) Weekly podcast, gym 6 days a week When it hits that “time” you know it’s time to do the thing Focusing In On ONE step forward TODAY (builds consistency) Forget about how long it’ll take, we’ll eventually get there Assess progress, make changes & keep going How is my progress? What’s working? What changes do I need to make? Repeat, repeat, repeat. These Habits don’t magically happen overnight, they take weeks or even months to build. How long something will take is besides the point, that time will eventually come! - If you enjoy this podcast, please leave us a 1 sentence review on the iTunes Podcast App with your honest feedback OR screenshot this Episode, post it to your Instagram Story tagging @Bobbbaaaay! - Enroll in Bearded Man University! In the beginning of this year I had a burnout. I had just gotten back from visiting family on the East Coast for the holidays and when I got back to LA, I put my pedal to the medal and had a breakdown. 6 months later, I’m much more conscious about how hard I work and have found ways to avoid that ever happening again. These are the 5 steps that I follow: Prioritizing My Health Physically in the gym, mentally keep a clear headspace and making sure I fuel myself with the right foods. Communicating With Family + Friends Sending a text or face timing loved ones, showing appreciation to the people that inspire me etc. Pump The Breaks! When I feel a burn out coming, I pump the break and toss in the towel for the day. Counting The Small Wins Daily Counting the 1-3 smalls win a day helps fuel the fire inside me to keep going. These small wins WILL add up! Everything Great Takes Time Being at peace knowing that it will take a lot of patience to accomplish these goals. - If you enjoy this podcast, please leave us a 1 sentence review on the iTunes Podcast App with your honest feedback OR screenshot this Episode, post it to your Instagram Story tagging @Bobbbaaaay! - Enroll in Bearded Man University! Bearded Man followers! Epic interview I have to share out with you today that I did on The Wellness Hustle Podcast a couple weeks back with Kirstie Taylor. We talked about growing up in Chicopee, MA, why I launched this podcast and how important it has been to treat it as if there are 10 million people listening every week. The Wellness Hustle Podcast is about empowering a shift in focus to what truly matters: ourselves. Work hard play hard isn’t cutting it anymore; we’ve been focusing on the wrong hustle. Intended to inspire a true shift in your life, this podcast will cut through the wellness BS that’s out there, chat with industry leaders, and have candid talks with real people who went through real struggles and how they overcame them. Real talks. Real advice. Real change. - If you enjoy this podcast, please leave us a 1 sentence review on the iTunes Podcast App with your honest feedback OR screenshot this Episode, post it to your Instagram Story tagging @WanderWithKirstie & @Bobbbaaaay! - Connect with Kirstie! 2018 was probably one of the greatest years of my life. It was the year I saw dreams come true and it was a taste of what I could accomplish if I manifested my goals into reality. If there is 1 thing money can’t buy you, it’s time. The clock keeps ticking and there is nothing we can do about it. Are we gonna sit on our ass and let our life happen before our eyes or are we going to make something of it? I can’t tell you how to live your life, I can only show you how I decide to live mine. 2019 let me give you a little heads up… there's a guy by the name of Bobbbaaaay or some know him as the world's favorite bearded man. He’s on a mission, and he will not / cannot be stopped. - If you enjoyed this podcast during 2018, please take a moment to leave us a 1 sentence review on the iTunes Podcast App with your honest feedback about the show, it's much appreciated! - Music by: Jordan Reddington - @LakeyInspired Connect with your favorite bearded man, Bobbbaaaay: Instagram: @Bobbbaaaay Twitter: @Bobbbaaaay Subscribe to our YouTube Channel for new interviews (and more) Follow us on Spotify Follow us on Soundcloud Subscribe to iTunes Follow us on Instagram: @PurposeintheYouth
