Serial Entrepreneur Pete Martin joins A.J. to discuss how you can go from entrepreneur, to enterprise, to empire, to exit by doing less. They talk about the importance of having the right team, why not all business is good business, escaping the rainmakers dilemma, and how co-innovating with your customers can maximize your growth and business income. Tune in to learn how to build a business around what's important to you to create long term value.About our Guest: Pete Martin is the founder of Ask My Board, which is the sixth company he has started. In AskMyBoard, he coaches businesses using the Four Pillars of Power and the Catapult Method, ensuring they grow to be resilient and financially healthy businesses. He has sold his other 5 businesses with an average return of 11x to his investors. He is the author of the upcoming book, "Sparking a Mobile Revolution; How Mobile Voting Will Change the World as We Know It.”.On today's episode:  Who is Pete Martin? - 0:47 How Pete Martin was doing this work pro bono before starting his company. - 02:11 How he grew his company without outside capital (and how he learned about organic growth). - 04:21 Who is his ideal client? -06:58 The four transition points of the entrepreneurial journey (where are you on this scale?). - 07:48 The four pillars of power explained (and how he turned down a $5 MM dollar contract).- 10:24  How the four pillars of power work together and influence each other. - 17:04  99% of the problems that entrepreneurs have are THIS kind. - 18:05 What is the rainmaker's dilemma? (and how to make a plan that actually sticks). - 24:01 What is the Catapult Method? - 27:27 How Pete Martin defines success. - 30:26  Did you know Pete Martin has an awesome band? - 32:55 Takeaways from today's show (and a HUGE discount on Pete's services)- 37:29  Key Takeaways:  The decisions you take when growing your company largely depend on whether you have external funding or are growing organically.  There are four key stages of the entrepreneurial journey: entrepreneur, enterprise, empire, and exit. Moving between these stages, and within these stages, requires different skill sets, different strategies, and different investments.  The four pillars of power are: team, customers, capital, and strategic execution. Strategic execution is when you are co-innovating with your customers and when you are co-innovating with your customers you've got an extremely valuable business and have the maximum amount of options with what you can do with your company. People problems constitute the large majority of problems that an entrepreneur faces. So, a great way to overcome this challenge is to ask yourself: what is my dream employee like? The Catapult Method is about maintaining a healthy business from the outset so that it is set up for growth but can also be a lucrative exit.  Are you using your time strategically? [26:19] “How we approach entrepreneurs as they create this growth plan is, it literally comes down to 'what are you doing on a day to day basis?', literally, because that's where the rubber meets the road. And if you say ‘hey I want to grow and I want to scale' and you're spending 8 hours filling RFPs I can tell you that you're going to hit your limit. And frankly, a lot of ego gets in the way.” How does the way you use your time facilitate or hinder your growth? Tell us in the comments, and don't forget to say hello if you would like to share your entrepreneurship story on our podcast. Connect with Pete Martin: LinkedIn: @petegmartin Twitter: @askmyboard  Website: https://askmyboard.com/  Connect with A.J.Lawrence: Website: ajlawrence.com Email: aj@b8fpodcast.com  Instagram: @ajlawrence LinkedIn: A.J. If you've heard any of the terms “open source software”, “web 2.0”, or “government as a platform”, you'll be familiar with today's guest – Tim O'Reilly – who has helped popularise these big ideas.     Tim is the founder, CEO, and Chairman of O'Reilly Media, the company that has been providing the picks and shovels of learning to the Silicon Valley gold rush for the past 35 years. The company's online learning and knowledge-on-demand platform at oreilly.com is used by thousands of enterprises and millions of individuals worldwide, and has a long history of convening conversations that reshape the computer industry.  Tim is also a partner at early-stage venture firm O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures and on the board of Code for America. He is the author of many technical books published by O'Reilly Media, and most recently ‘WTF?: What's the Future and Why It's Up to Us'.    He is a visiting professor of practice at the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose at University College London, headed by Mariana Mazzucato – mentioned more than once in this conversation – and is working on a new book about why we need to rethink antitrust in the era of internet-scale platforms.   In today's episode, which is the Grand Finale for this season, we explore the future of internet-enabled organizations, and how to think about value creation and regulation of these tech-companies.  Listen on to find out what we can learn from the Golden Age of the internet, how platforms like Google and Amazon have lost their way over the years - and are now breeding their own competition - and what Tim thinks about Government-funded innovations. As the software industry is becoming more at the heart of everything in society, we need to create systems that enable more value than they capture.    If you want to hang on a bit after Tim's final words, the co-hosts bring a brief wrap-up of the season and let you know the next plans for Boundaryless research activities. It's been quite a ride this season too, and we are so grateful for both our loyal listeners and every guest who are pushing the boundaries of the future of organizing.   Remember that you can always find transcripts and key highlights of the episode on our Medium publication:   Adam Smith, Supermoney, 1972: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Supermoney-Wiley-Investment-Classics-Smith/dp/0471786314/r > Time O'Reilly, ‘The End of Silicon Valley as We Know It?', 2021: https://www.oreilly.com/radar/the-end-of-silicon-valley-as-we-know-it/ Find out more about the show and the research at Boundaryless at www.platformdesigntoolkit.com/podcast   Thanks for the ad-hoc music to Liosound / Walter Mobilio. The highly respected talent agent talks to BoF’s Tim Blanks about how young creatives can develop their careers and have meaningful impact. CLM is one of the most influential management agencies in the industry. But after 35 years representing the likes of Juergen Teller and Tim Walker, last year’s upheaval reminded Camilla Lowther of how she got started: working at a small agency and building new networks. This year, she launched Fire, a creative talent agency focused on the new generation of talent. This week on The BoF Podcast, Lowther and editor-at-large Tim Blanks discuss opportunities to learn from and with young generations and why being true to yourself is still fundamental to a successful career as a creative. “Believe in what you do. Don’t try and do what you think other people want you to do, because, you know, the truth is really important. Even if it takes longer to get there, if you really believe in it, then other people will believe in it,” says Lowther. Creativity is best served when you’re open to sharing and learning, whatever stage of your career you’re at. “I think the one thing that’s really important for all of us who’ve been in the business for possibly a long time is to impart our knowledge and our narrative to [young people],” says Lowther. “And then then it’s up to them to take what they want to and also to teach us something new.” Lowther reflects on how persistence is an important quality in anyone starting out in their career and how remaining true to your vision is critical. “Don’t try and do what you think other people want,” she says. “Even if it takes longer to get there, if you really believe in it, then other people will believe in it.” Related Articles: End of the Model Agency as We Know It? In August we're going to re-air some episodes we think may be helpful given everything going on right now. We'll return to our Accessible Herbalism series at the end of the month! Katja shares a hard-fought lesson: that health is not equivalent to merit, and that as herbalists it’s important for us to stay away from idea that there is A Right Way and We Know It. Instead our role should be to offer a wide variety of tools to try that can help build greater resilience, and provide guidance on those the client is most interested in. Herbs help out in a variety of ways to compensate for the impacts of a suboptimal situation.Mentioned in this podcast:The Twenty-Four Hour Mind, Rosalind D. Last year, I made a Passover parody playlist to help our family get in the holiday spirit. This year, a friend sent me a coronavirus playlist with songs like, “Don’t Stand So Close to Me,” “U Can’t Touch This,” and “It’s the End of the World as We Know It.” Or my personal favorite for this Pesach: “From a Distance.” Last night, many of us connected with our loved ones from a distance via Zoom, FaceTime, and other virtual platforms. In Israel, there’s a new Pesach move: ochlim b’nifrad, shirim b’yachad – eat separately and sing together. Last night, all over Israel, with the entire country on lockdown and not allowed even to leave their homes, people took a page out of two other major Jewish holiday playbooks. Apartment-dwellers channeled Hannukah, moving their tables to their front windows. Those with more outdoor room channeled Sukkot, setting their tables out on balconies or in backyards, so they could join neighbors in song. Eating at separate tables, singing together. We reach across the Atlantic Ocean and talk with Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner's Nick Pryor on his work the firm's BCLP³ innovation objectives. Nick heads up the firm's European, Middle East, and Asia innovation projects, and gives us some insights on the joys and hardships that come with innovation in the global legal market. Whether it is regulations, cultural challenges, competition, or setting a long-term vision, innovation is challenging. However, Nick also stresses that it is also very rewarding. Innovation Inspirations If you had any doubts that privacy was dying, the work that Clearview AI is doing may put those doubts to bed. The facial recognition company has scraped billions of images and personal details from the open web over the past few years and has created a database for law enforcement which claims to have a 99% accuracy rate for matching faces to these images. In a recent The Daily Podcast from the New York Times, reporter Kashmir Hill investigates Clearview AI's entry into the facial recognition marketplace and finds a story that is equally amazing and scary. Federal and state law enforcement are raving about the power of this product to help them solve crimes that may have gone unsolved forever. There is a dark side to this power, which Hill found out first hand when the company manipulated results on her photos and possibly intimidated police who were talking with her. Check out the podcast The End of Privacy as We Know It? On a lighter note, Marlene's innovation comes from another podcast that explains how new words are added to the Miriam Webster dictionary. The podcast doesn't just stop with the explanation, they are actually attempting to place one of three words into that dictionary, and are asking for help on picking which one. Which will it be? Niblings? Preregret? Or, Pistracted? You can help pick America's Next Top Word. Listen, Subscribe, Comment Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcast. Would many of today's churches be recognisable to the earliest Christians? Did Jesus envisage cathedrals with mitre-adorned bishops or megachurches with suit-wearing pastors? Or has something important been lost—or, at least, obscured from full vision—over the centuries? We are joined by Keith Giles—author of the well-known "Jesus Un..." series—for a bracing conversation on his challenging 2019 book, Jesus Unveiled : Forsaking Church as We Know It for Ekklesia as God Intended. Keith, "who abandoned the pulpit to follow Jesus", shares with us from his experience how it's possible to recapture "being church" through taking Jesus at His word and together encountering Him directly. "Keith Giles is a former pastor who abandoned the pulpit to follow Jesus and ended up founding a church where 100% of the offering is given away to help the poor in the community. He is the author of several best-selling books including Jesus Untangled, Jesus Unbound, and Jesus Unveiled. He lives with his wife, Wendy, in El Paso, Texas."
