About seven years ago, I listened to today's guest, Mark Divine, on Tom Bilyeu's Inside Quest. And I was immediately captivated, like I could not actually put into words the thoughts going through my head. Early in this journey, he talked about things that I have always been interested in: martial arts, meditation, and yoga. I would come later to find that Mark was not only a Navy seal and an entrepreneur, business owner, author, podcast host, and Zen practitioner, but also just an incredible and giving human. It's an honor for me today to sit across from him and have this conversation on this podcast. There are times in our lives when we have the opportunity to sit and have conversations with people who may be our heroes or mentors or people that we look up to, and I did not take that lightly. And I don't take your time lightly either because I know the huge amount of investment you spend when you come and share this experience with me and so, for that, I say thank you. Mark's journey is really bathed in decisions like so many people to go and create the life, to be the conspire of your own journey and your own story. And like anyone on a vision quest to discover and better understand who he is, I'm incredibly excited about this episode. Before we get in, I want to read a quote from his book, Unbeatable Mind, just to kind of lay the context and the groundwork for the expectation of what you're about to step into. “Yoga reinforced the notion that daily training and practice was more important than any specific teacher or skill. The journey of disciplining and yolking the word yoga means to yolk the mind, body, and spirit to steal itself and focus on higher-order notions of being and living is one of the greatest secrets to personal development, just as the body will atrophy without constant training, the mind and spirit will not develop and will atrophy without a similar focus.” My friends. Beyond Influential

I am very excited about this week’s and next week’s episodes because this is an incredibly valuable and actionable two-parter with a guest who is world-class at what he does and these are skill sets you’re going to need no matter what you do in life.   As I’ve been growing this show and looking to take Beyond Influential to the next level, I’ve been thinking a lot about the people I know in my network who are master networkers—they build long-lasting relationships with people at all levels in a way that is not purely transactional, and they do it in a way that feels very real and authentic.  I met this week’s guest, Christopher McDonald, when I was working with Tom Bilyeu as my client at VaynerTalent; he’s been an integral part of Tom’s brand and the launch and strategy of both Inside Quest and Impact Theory, which we get into in this Part 1. Christopher is a Talent Booker with almost two decades of experience and an extensive network of connections and relationships.  He has worked with everyone from high profile billionaires to celebrities and has booked an array of top talent from the world of entertainment, sports, business, science, tech, and politics.  And for what Christopher does as a talent booker, you need to have very strong relationships but also a very strong creative and strategic eye.  Christopher has booked, produced, and written for an array of programming including late-night television, cable news, web series, and comedy sketch shows. Christopher helped launch The Kelly Clarkson Show (NBC), Tavis Smiley (PBS), the second coming of The Arsenio Hall Show (CBS/Tribune), It’s Not You, It’s Men with Tyrese & Rev Run (OWN), Post Malone's Worldwide Celebrity Pong League (Facebook Watch), and Demi Lovato’s project (Quibi), and he has been with Tom Bilyeu’s Impact Theory from the very beginning.  Normally no one likes a name-dropper, but I specifically told Christopher to please namedrop in this conversation because he’s worked with people like Prince, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Angelina Jolie, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Dave Matthews, Joni Mitchell, Alicia Keys, John Legend... you get the picture.  I love to introduce you to the people you should know on Beyond Influential, because while the public usually pays attention to the “face” of the brand, there are always talented people behind these people that make it all possible.   On Part 1 of this conversation, we cover a lot of juicy topics:  Christopher’s career evolution: From journalism to music booking to launching Impact Theory Working in Hollywood: Expectations vs. reality How he booked the biggest talent in Hollywood: What he loved, his approach, and the not-so-glamorous moments All things networking: Tips, insights, and the biggest mistake people make The launch of Impact Theory & its current growth strategies How to book your show & strategies for landing dreams guests  Why you want “lightning in a jar” moments in your interviews, how to take your show to the next level, & more! And you are not going to want to miss Part 2 next week which is all about the ins and outs of pitching, advice he received from Oprah herself about booking, and more! These are both bookmark episodes for sure!      Don't want to miss an episode (or valuable free resources!)? Now, let me tell you. I recently had the honor of being interviewed on an awesome show, Inside Quest, by Quest Nutrition Co-Founder Tom Bilyeu. We had such an incredible conversation, I'm still thinking about it.And of course I wanted him to come on  The School of Greatness.Tom is not only an amazing human being, husband, entrepreneur, and businessman, but he has helped build Quest to become the 2nd fastest growing company in North America! What really hits home for me about Tom and his mission, however, is that it isn't about making millions and breaking growth records.Tom's company is built on a deep desire to serve others by addressing a core part of health issues - lack of truly clean food products to fuel an amazing life.I loved getting under the hood with Tom about how they hire and fire at Quest, his thoughts on marriage and kids, and how he has developed killer self-awareness through the years.Welcome to the gold mine of Tom Bilyeu's brain and heart in Episode 201.Some questions I ask:How did you stay committed to keep going to the gym even when you didn't want to?How did you figure out that you wanted to start Quest as your mission-aligned company? What is the question you ask people when you are interviewing them to understand their mindset? How do you cultivate self-awareness?In This Episode, You Will Learn:Why Tom believes wealth is the great facilitator for change (but it still doesn't buy happiness)The difference between momentary happiness and framework happinessAsk yourself, "What would I love to do even if I were failing?"The power of servicing someone else's dream to propel your ownThe arrogance of belief and how to use it for goodThe Quest philosophy around hiringThe skills needed to create a great marriage are the same skills to create a great businessPlus much more...Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, Tom Bilyeu shares his now legendary story of how he went from scrounging in his couch cushions for enough change to put gas in his car to the founder of a company that became worth more than a billion dollars in less than six years. That same company, Quest Nutrition, was ranked as the second-fastest growing company in North America in 2014. While creating amazingly-delicious products with the goal of ending metabolic disease, Tom began to invest in a new passion - to do what he called "helping people escape from the matrix." He launched a show called Inside Quest. The success of the show and his ever-expanding vision, led him to leave the company at the end of 2016 to start Impact Theory. In less than two years, Tom amassed a social media following of over 2M (of which I can say, I was one of the first) with some of his videos being viewed tens of millions of times. What can we learn from the man who wants to build a studio to rival Disney? You're about to find out in this never-before heard interview. Also hear Tom share: - how he measures his blood levels to monitor his performance - the diet he leverages for consistent energy throughout the day - why he never sets an alarm - the one mindset shift that changed everything - the skills he's most committed to developing in his life - the one action he recommends everyone take to improve their own performance

Today's episode reveals the breakthrough weight-loss device "Modius," from Neurovalens. This non-invasive wearable headband is helping to reduce body fat and increase wellness through activation of the vestibular nerve. JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST Traditionally, wearables have focused on tracking and monitoring. They can tell us things like how many steps we've taken, and the body's heart rate and calorie intake. But this new technology with Modius works by activating the parts of our brain that will dictate how our system holds onto fat. It creates a sensation in the mind of physical activity which will shift our metabolism and help to release excess weight. On this podcast, we talk with Tom Bilyeu, co-founder of Quest Nutrition and host of the "Impact Theory" podcast, along with Dr. Jason Mckeown, CEO of Neurovalens. They explain how combined with proper diet and exercise, Modius may control how the wellness and medical communities approach obesity in the years to come.   Listen To Episode 130 As We Uncover: How to control fat loss through vestibular nerve activation Tom's fascination with neuroscience and its impact on wellness Why Tom decided to join forces with Neurovalence Jason's path that led him to study vestibular stimulation with Dr. Ramachandran The meaning behind the name "Modius" How the hypothalamus helps to control our level of body fat Why vestibular stimulation will cause a metabolic shift in our body The changes Tom can notice since wearing the Modius headband How the body uses insulin and leptin to regulate our weight and appetite Jason's health transformation after using Modius and adjusting his lifestyle The cognitive benefits that come from movement and exercise How the vestibular system can impact depression and anxiety The relation between the vagus and vestibular nerves How vestibular stimulation affects our sleep Why the effects of Modius won't lead to a dependency on the device How a gratitude practice can help reduce stress levels Top 3 Takeaways From The Show Weight loss can be challenging for many individuals. Sometimes even with proper diet and exercise, we can still hold onto fat. There is an ideal weight where the brain believes it should keep the body, and this level increases with a sedentary lifestyle and high-calorie diet. Through neurostimulation with the Modius, we can help change this determined set point for our body's fat storage and begin to release weight more easily. Don't be closed-minded to technology empowering human potential. Forward-thinking innovation is no longer a convenience, but a necessity in the wellness world. We must continuously develop our body's intuition to help regulate our health and these new tools and technologies give us an upper-hand in the process. The Modius device isn't the "end all be all" for weight loss, but it's being shown to help us get closer to our goals. We still have to adjust our lifestyle and take steps to increase our physical and emotional wellness if we want to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Power Quotes From Tom and Jason   "Walking into anything with skepticism is always the wise answer." - Tom Bilyeu "I have a true passion for how electronics and technology can improve our wellness." - Dr. Jason Mckeown "Sometimes there is a gap between the on-paper science and the real world results." - Tom Bilyeu  "Tracking and monitoring our actions will soon become a much larger part of our wellness." - Tom Bilyeu "Vestibular stimulation has been shown to decrease stress-related cortisol levels." - Dr. Jason Mckeown "The influence of the nervous system on the mind is profound." - Dr. Jason Mckeown "Perspective and gratitude are an essential part of our wellness." - Josh Trent "My initial response to failure is work harder, learn more, and get better."  - Tom Bilyeu About MODIUS Most people would love to lose a few pounds and get a lean and healthy body. MODIUS is a revolutionary new careable technology which helps you reduce body weight and gain a leaner body. MODIUS is cutting edge technology developed by neuroscientists based in San Diego, California. It works by stimulating a part of the brain that has been shown to naturally influence body weight and help achieve a leaner body. So....it's episode 29, not 30 (I thought it was during this episode)...yet. My bad. Did the world end? Nope. Jim Kwik was introduced in this podcast. The five points that stand out for me during his interview with Tom Bilyeu on Inside Quest (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyTjTRrMYDQ) were: 1. He has a life-size Hulk, Iron Man, and Spiderman in his house. 2. At the age of 5 he suffered brain trauma from a fall causing him to prolong his ability to read, and then again at the age of 18! 3. 3 G's concept: Growth, Grit, Giving 4. His Matrix connection of Morpheus= Mind, Neo= Action, and Trinity= love/emotion. H^3= Head->Heart->Hands 5. His dichotomy: "With great power comes great responsibility."-Spider Man ; "With great responsibility comes great power."-Jim Kwik [Extra sidenote: He's made connections of Joseph Campbell and The Heroes Journey with comic superheroes. I've read Joseph Campbell's The Power of Myth which has helped me grow immensely in my spiritual aspect of life.] Questions of the Conversation: 1. Who was your favorite superhero as a child? Why? 2. Have you fallen in to a funk? When did you become conscious? How did you fix it? 3. Who's love did you crave? 4. Who do you have to be for this person? 5. Who could you never be for this person? 6. What am I supposed to learn from someone I'm trying to help raise? 7. What skill do they have that I don't have? 8. What do I have to do all the time? Welcome back to The Real Brian Show! We'd like to invite you back to our room in this episode to see the view, if you know what we mean. Don't know what we mean? Well, then it's good we brought Martin (aka The Flash) back. In This Episode Texting & Driving. Really?! The Flash returns! Phone and Social Media Addiction Come See the View I'll let Brian and Martin share the full story of where this line became a comedic staple of our friendship, but it falls into the category of not realizing what you've said until after you've said it! Witty banter and friendly jabbing requires a healthy dose of euphemisms and double entendres. If I'm not mistaken, we stumbled into this particular double entendre at DragonCon with the second guest of this episode, Martin (aka The Flash). It was a memorable weekend and lives on through the inside jokes we carefully cultivated. Over the last several years, many of the best friendship I've developed have been as a result of podcasting. We've had Martin guest host on The Real Brian Show before, but the first time we ever got to chat with him was way back on The Flash podcast Brian and I hosted for a half-season at Golden Spiral Media. Martin, being a pretty big Flash fan himself, was an expert witness in our ramp-up episodes. Prior to that, Martin became a huge part of the TV Talk community by providing regular contributions to the shows he watched and listened to and it's been amazing to see how one thing has led to another. And before we knew it, Brian was inviting him back to his room to see the view. Or was he inviting me? I can never remember. Ha. Haha. Phone and Social Media Addiction Martin and Brian touch on an increasingly popular topic in this episode, that of millennials in the workplace. The discussion was spawned by this Simon Sinek interview on Inside Quest with Tom Bilyeu, in which he highlights the perceived problem of millennial's performance in the workplace and their social media-driven dopamine addiction. I was born in the late 80s and am technically considered a Millennial, so as much as I often agree with the observations put out there by folks like Simon, I also know that there are exceptions. Interestingly, I was reading an article this past weekend about how I am on the cusp of the Millennial generation. Even though I fall into that era, I still remember what a household without a personal computer was like. I still remember the novelty of using an old Mac to play an 8-bit version of Oregon Trail in the school computer lab. I went through junior high and high school without social media (heck, I didn't even have a cell phone). My parents raised me in a frugal household, not an entitled one. And for that I am tremendously thankful. I watched my dad's incredible work ethic and strive every day to emulate his example. That said, I really was on the cusp of the Millennial generation and I don't think I am either the exception or the rule; I think it was about my graduation class that began to go either way, until social media helped spur on the de-evolution of our society. My opinion, obviously. Simon draws attention to some of the inadvertent behaviors Millennials exhibit in the workplace; behaviors that aren't entirely their fault, and yet are invalid excuses in the real world. Parents treating their children with an entitled hand, for example (i.e. participation trophies), are setting kids up for disappointments later in life. It's not entirely the child's fault, other than the fact that they aren't being taught to simultaneously stand up to hand-outs. We've talked about adversity on this show and how even when we're faced with a bad lot in life, it's entirely possible to use adversity to fuel our rise to success. But how do you tell a generation of children who were given participation trophies that the real enemy isn't their employers who expect them to show up to work on time...but an entire childhood worth of "you're special!" commentary? Of course they're special; but they're not so special that they can show up to work 2 hours late every day and expect to keep their job. One of my favorite aspects to this interview Simon gave is the emphasis he puts on imbalance as the ultimate culprit, not the behavior. The behavior is a result of imbalance; there is nothing inherently wrong with Facebook, but too much time spent on Facebook is wrong. The behavior can be corrected by fixing the imbalance and will never be corrected by criticizing or attacking the behavior itself. What is your take on the Simon interview? Let us know! But he’s had his share of low points on his journey toward success, and none of them were more difficult than the moment he came to realize that money doesn’t buy happiness. On this episode you’ll hear it from Tom’s own mouth and discover what drives him not that his pursuit of money for the sake of money is gone. “The only thing money is good for is facilitating something else.” That’s what Tom says during this conversation - and what he means is that naturally, money can provide a lot of good things for your life and for others - but if you don’t put your focus on the value the money will allow you to provide to the lives of others, you’ll be miserable as you chase it. We’ve all heard that “the love of money is the root of all evil,” and it’s easy to see why. Greed, extortion, manipulation, and all kinds of other vices have been known to flow out of people who only care about money. But What Tom has to teach us on this episode, a life lesson that he learned the hard way, is that the purpose of building a huge business that generates lots of revenue is to serve others. That’s a purpose that fuels generosity, not greed. Find out more of the hard lessons’ Tom has learned on this episode. I had a very open and passionate conversation with Tom Bilyeu today. He is the Co-founder and President of Quest Nutrition, a company that endeavors to transform the entire food industry by creating foods that taste as good as they are good for you. In 2014, it was named the #2 fastest-growing private company in America by Inc.com. Tom also hosts the weekly thought leadership talk show http://www.insidequest.com (Inside Quest). Surprisingly, Tom says that he was not a born entrepreneur – he was actually inspired by The Matrix to challenge his construct of reality and change his mindset. “The Matrix really gave me the framework with which to begin thinking about my life … I think that our mindset is the real-world equivalent of The Matrix.” To get out of the matrix, you have to change the way you think. “You have to stop allowing yourself to believe things about yourself, even if they're true, that don't move you forward.” Changing your mindset is a battle. For Tom, the process of becoming an entrepreneur was really the process of controlling his mindset and realizing it is possible to take control of destiny – not only realizing he didn't have to be an employee, but also realizing that financial independence was achievable. “Your mind is everything, and the narrative that you tell yourself about yourself is the most important thing in your life. If you don't take time to construct and repeat a narrative that is empowering, you are doing yourself a disservice.” Tom's Morpheus(es), or mentors, are the authors of books. He has a deep sense of gratitude for people who take the time to put their wisdom down in a book so that others can learn easy what they learned hard. “It's a great tradition to write down that knowledge so that it can be passed on.” On Tom's site, it says that companies only have a chance at greatness when driven by a mission. He also says that the mission of Quest was born out of misery. When Tom first started working with his current partners, they were working to get rich. After a lot of success, Tom was miserable. He left to embark on a life of purpose and lasting fulfillment. However, his partners agreed, and fought to keep Tom on board. They came up with a new mantra: Work on something that brings value to people Believe in what they're working towards Work towards something they want to fight for, even if they're falling The mission of Quest Nutrition is simple, but big: to put an end to metabolic disease. That's what makes Quest more than just a food company. It's a company that won't stop innovating until global nutrition has been freed from the stranglehold of junk food. This is not a knock on money, but saying that money can come in the service of providing value to others and in service of a greater mission. “It's about becoming something, rather than having something.” When you're solving a real problem, people are going to pay for that value, and what you're doing is going to matter. Our world is so interconnected that companies can be punished for either having a mission or not having a mission, and your community cares about what you're trying to do. “All of a sudden you live in this world where people can learn the truth of why your company exists, beyond your products.” Tom demonstrates that Quest Nutrition makes decisions based on their mission and community, and people think they're out of their mind for making some of those decisions. Recently, they switched to a different fiber source that costs a lot more than their pervious source, without changing the cost of their product. It nearly cut their profitability in half. However, the scientific community was questioning whether their previous fiber source was, in fact, a source of fiber at all, and the new fiber is much more metabolically beneficial. “If it's really going to take us 25 years to end metabolic disease, we have to be relevant that long, we have to be trusted that long.” The Quest Belief System goes...

Tom Bilyeu is the co-founder and president of Quest Nutrition and the host of the weekly thought leadership talk show, Inside Quest.   Tom and his business partners have been working as a team for 13 years, across multiple companies. Quest Nutrition, however, was the company that broke the mold. Previously driven by an obsessive focus on profitability and companies designed to be sold, Tom and his partners founded Quest with a different vision: building a company with a mission - a company designed to last. To do so, they asked themselves one question, “What would we love doing even if we were failing?” Enter Quest Nutrition. In just five years, Tom has helped grow the company from a modest passion project into the second fastest growing private company in America, with over 57,000% growth in its first three years alone (via Inc. 5000).   For Tom the mission of Quest is deeply personal – he wants to save his mom and sister from metabolic disease. To do that he plans to transform the entire food industry by creating foods that taste as good as they are good for you. That’s what makes Quest more than just a food company, it’s a company that will never stop innovating until global nutrition has been freed from the stranglehold of junk food.   Tom is a forever student of life.
