Montenegro protests expose fragile balance in Serbia-Turkey relations

International report

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 10, 2025 6:12

Anti-Turk protests in Montenegro have added to rising tensions between Serbia and Turkey. The unrest was set off by anger over Ankara's sale of weapons to Kosovo, and growing fears of Turkish influence in the Balkans. “Turks out!” shouted protesters as they marched through Podgorica, the Montenegrin capital. Several Turkish-owned businesses, among the country's largest investors, were ransacked during last month's violence. The clashes were sparked by a knife attack on a Montenegrin citizen by Turkish nationals. After the unrest, Montenegro imposed visa requirements on Turkish visitors. Some opposition parties accused Serbia of stoking the protests, pointing to rising friction between Belgrade and Ankara over the arms sale to Kosovo. “There are those accusing the Serbian region of being behind it,” Vuk Vuksanovic, of the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy, told RFI. “Although I have seen no material evidence.” Widening rift While Serbia has not commented on the accusations, it has the capacity to incite such unrest given its strong influence in Montenegro, Vuksanovic said. “The drama involving Montenegro has built up to this difficult atmosphere in Serbian-Turkish relations,” he said. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic last month accused Turkey of trying to resurrect the Ottoman Empire through the sale of sophisticated drones to Kosovo, which broke away from Serbia in 1999. Analysts say the weapons deal could shift the balance of power in the region. “There are the kamikaze drones, which are posing a threat, and there are also strategic drones likely to be used to secure the border itself and more as a show of force,” said Zoran Ivanov, a security expert from the Institute of National History in Skopje, North Macedonia. “So it poses a direct security threat to Serbia and Serbia has to react to this.” Criminalising identity: Turkey's LGBTQI+ community under threat Changing alliances The tension marks a sharp turnaround. In recent years, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had built a close relationship with his Serbian counterpart, and Turkish companies became major investors in Serbia. However the arms sale to Kosovo reveals a shift in Turkey's relations with Belgrade, explained international relations professor Huseyin Bagci, of Ankara's Middle East Technical University. “Turkey has more leverage than Serbia,” Bagci said. “The relations between Turkey and Serbia, we understand each other, but it is not as happy as before.” Analysts say the shift reflects Ankara's wider ambitions in the Balkans. “Ankara is trying to increase its influence and will do it,” said Bagci, adding that Turkey's historical and cultural ties to the region run deep – with millions of families tracing their roots back to the former Ottoman territories. “The Ottoman Empire was a Balkan empire. The Turkish influence is getting bigger, and of course, they don't like it. But Turkey is the big brother in the Balkans.” Turkish Cypriot vote could force shift in Erdogan's approach to divided island Turkish expansion Last month, Turkish forces took command of NATO's KFOR peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. At the same time, Turkish businesses continued expanding across the region. “They're expanding their markets; they're expanding their capabilities; they're expanding their influence,” Ivanov said. Turkey's renewed focus on the Balkans was unsurprising given historical ties, he added. “That's natural for the Turks to come to invest in the region and now looking for their old roots." However its expanding presence might feel like history repeating itself, Ivanov warned. As “a man who is coming from the Balkans,” he said, he sees “the Turks coming as they were in history” – a reminder of a past many in the region have not forgotten. The European Union has praised Ankara for supporting peacekeeping operations and economic aid in Kosovo. But analysts caution that Turkey must avoid alienating its Balkan neighbours. “Ankara also has to be mindful of its own limitations of its own Balkan ambitions," Vuksanovic. said. "Because otherwise it can push majority Christian Orthodox nations like the Serbs, Greeks and Bulgarians to work against the Turks if the Turks are perceived to be too provocative or aggressive.”

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on the Mark Levin Show, On Monday's Mark Levin Show, 7 million old hippies turned out in the Democrat-Marxist-Islamist No Kings mini-parades on Saturday? Well, 330 million Americans did not. The tea party movements had massive rallies, and it wasn't just one day. How is this President a king? He's working through the courts when he's blocked on improving America. For example, in a victory for America the 9th Circuit court ruled that the National Guard can be deployed in Portland. Also, Democrats turned a continuing resolution into a government shutdown blackmail threat to reverse provisions of the big, beautiful bill. Later, Marxist-Islamist Zohran Mamdani is pro-terrorism - from his associations with Imam Siraj Wahaj, his support for Hamas, his calls to globalize the Intifada, and his ties to the Qatar royal family. If people in NYC vote for Mamdani, they are voting for somebody who embraces terrorists, terrorist organizations, and hence, by implication, terrorism. Mamdani is no moderate, he's a grave threat to the people in New York City. Phase II of the Gaza peace plan is the most challenging due to Hamas, which refuses to disarm or leave Gaza, abuses Palestinians, murders IDF soldiers, and repeatedly violates the ceasefire. Despite warnings from President Trump of potential obliteration, Hamas persists. Qatar's emir, a major Hamas funder and host to its leaders, accuses Israel of genocide and ceasefire breaches while calling for a Palestinian state. Turkey's Erdogan similarly harbors Hamas leaders, threatens Israel, and takes provocative actions. The ceasefire must be enforced urgently to stop ongoing murders and torture, and support should be given to Trump if he orders military action against Hamas. Mass legal and illegal immigration without assimilation causes profound cultural and societal changes, leading to a dark period in Western societies where Marxist-Islamist ideology smothers Enlightenment values. You can see this in NYC where foreign-born voters overwhelmingly support socialist-Islamist immigrant candidate Zohran Mamdani in the mayoral race against Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa. The Democrat Party relies on Marxist-socialist beliefs for power, abandoning the American founding, Declaration, Constitution, separation of powers, and genuine elections, instead favoring unelected judges, bureaucracy, and massive government spending to control the people. Later, Zohran Mamdani got his butt kicked at the NYC debate. He's a sloganeer, which is typical of Marxists, but he won't be substantive at all. Learn more about your ad choices. Turkish Cypriot vote could force shift in Erdogan's approach to divided island

International report

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 25, 2025 5:38

The landslide defeat of Turkey's ally in the Turkish Cypriot elections could now force President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to drop his push for a permanent partition of Cyprus and boost efforts to reset ties with the European Union. Securing 63 percent of the vote, Tufan Erhurman's victory in last weekend's election took Erdogan by surprise. “The defeat was so big, 63 percent was such a landslide, Ankara was really shocked,” said former Erdogan advisor Ilnur Cevik. Erhurman's Republican Turkish Party backs a united island. Erdogan supported incumbent Ersin Tatar, whose National Unity Party wants two separate states. “Ankara had amassed all its political clout on the island," Cevik added. "It had sent its vice president five times to the island; it had sent numerous delegations led by deputies and mayors.” It failed to win Turkish Cypriots over because “the essence of it was Turkey's interference, which created huge resentment among the Turkish Cypriots”, Cevik said. Cyprus has been split since Turkey invaded in 1974. Erdogan had pushed for international recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognised only by Ankara. Turkey ready to help rebuild Gaza, but tensions with Israel could be a barrier Shift away from partition Analysts say Erhurman's win has dealt a final blow to Erdogan's two state strategy for Cyprus. “The two independent states idea was dead on arrival, and now it's officially dead,” said Soli Ozel, of Kadir Has University's International Relations Department. He said Erdogan's reaction to the election points to a change in approach. “President Erdogan's message of congratulations to [Erhurman] suggests at least for the moment he's ready to turn the page on that.” Erdogan's stance is very different to that of his coalition partner Devlet Bahceli, who called for the result to be overturned and for the north of the island to be integrated with Turkey. Former Turkish ambassador Selim Kuneralp said the election gives Erdogan a chance to drop a policy that has become a growing obstacle to improving EU defence relations. Turkey and Egypt's joint naval drill signals shifting Eastern Med alliances EU ties on the line Cyprus has long blocked Turkey's hopes of deeper EU defence cooperation and access to a 150 billion euro arms programme known as SAFE. “So far, everything has been blocked by the Cyprus problem,” said Kuneralp, adding that the election result offers a rare opening. “Now you've got these election results that open a small window. So that's why the present situation might not be so bad for Erdogan.” European governments see Turkey as an important partner in defending themselves against Russia. A shift to unification talks could suit both sides, analyst Soli Ozel said. “Given Russia's proclivities, it makes sense for [Turkey] to be part of SAFE. And it doesn't make sense for the Europeans because of the Greek and Greek Cypriot opposition to leaving Turkey out,” he said. Erdogan's Washington visit exposes limits of his rapport with Trump Changing priorities EU leaders have new priorities that could help clear a path. “The European Union is no longer the European Union of our grandmothers; the issues of human rights and rule of law no longer count for anything," Ozel said.  "That's a relation that is cleared of its thorns.” Turkey's backsliding on democracy has long held back cooperation with Brussels. Human rights is not expected to feature much during German Chancellor Frederick Mertz's visit to Ankara later this month. Deepening defence ties is set to top the agenda, but how far Erdogan supports unification could decide his next steps with the EU.

On Wednesday's Mark Levin Show, mass legal and illegal immigration without assimilation causes profound cultural and societal changes, leading to a dark period in Western societies where Marxist-Islamist ideology smothers Enlightenment values. You can see this in NYC where foreign-born voters overwhelmingly support socialist-Islamist immigrant candidate Zohran Mamdani in the mayoral race against Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa. The Democrat Party relies on Marxist-socialist beliefs for power, abandoning the American founding, Declaration, Constitution, separation of powers, and genuine elections, instead favoring unelected judges, bureaucracy and massive government spending to control the people. Later, Jeffrey Rosen calls in to discuss his new book, The Pursuit of Liberty: How Hamilton vs. Jefferson Ignited the Lasting Battle Over Power in America. Rosen explains the enduring clash between Hamilton's vision of a strong federal government and powerful executive, and Jefferson's emphasis on states' rights and individual liberties.  Also, Phase two of the Gaza peace plan is highly complex involving numerous countries, governments, and figures like Trump, Kushner, Netanyahu, and Dermer, who deserve credit for their efforts. However, Hamas, a terrorist group per its 1988 charter calling for Israel's destruction via jihad, establishment of an Islamic state under Sharia, rejection of negotiations, and anti-Semitic rhetoric, refuses to disarm or surrender, instead centralizing power by torturing and killing challengers among Palestinians. The world, including the UN, universities, and Hamas supporters, remains silent on Hamas's slaughter of fellow Palestinians. Qatar's Emir condemns Israel as committing genocide in Gaza, reaffirms support for Palestine without denouncing Hamas, while Turkey's Erdogan blocks Netanyahu from a regional meeting. Israel previously surrounded and nearly destroyed Hamas but withdrew for peace and international pressure; now, hesitant Arab/Muslim nations refuse troops in Gaza, leaving Israel and the IDF to eliminate Hamas for lasting peace. On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, Phase II of the Gaza peace plan is the most challenging due to Hamas, which refuses to disarm or leave Gaza, abuses Palestinians, murders IDF soldiers, and repeatedly violates the ceasefire. Also, Democrats are keeping the government shutdown by continuing to block a non-controversial continuing resolution to try and blackmail Republicans to approve $1.5 trillion in additional spending. This will generate massive debt—similar to the phony Inflation Reduction Act—leading to inflation, higher prices for gasoline, food, mortgages, and credit cards, ultimately harming average citizens and future generations. Later, Zohran Mandami must be defeated in New York's upcoming mayoral race. He dodges questions on Hamas support; campaigns with Imam Siraj Wahaj, who served as a character witness for the 1993 World Trade Center bombing mastermind and called for jihad. Schanzer expresses concern about the potential for Turkish troops on the ground in Gaza to enforce peace, noting that Turkey previously sponsored Hamas and called for a Muslim coalition to attack Israel. Erdogan provides sanctuary to the Muslim Brotherhood (the "mother ship of Hamas") and is an Islamist to his core. He has supported ISIS and Hamas and helped Iran evade sanctions. While Donald Trump has attempted to co-opt Erdogan to make Turkey a more constructive player, Schanzer is concerned this strategy will fail, believing it runs against Erdogan's fundamental nature. 1879 OTTOMANS

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Editor David Horovitz joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. We begin the program by describing the joy and relief experienced by families of released hostages -- and all Israelis -- as they were reunited with their loved ones. However, Hamas handed over the bodies of only four dead hostages, with Israel and the families of the remaining 24 accusing the terror group of breaching its commitments under the ceasefire. The International Committee of the Red Cross said that it will take time before the bodies of all the dead hostages are returned, calling it a “massive challenge” given the difficulties of finding remains amid Gaza’s rubble. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum said that it will hold an emergency meeting tonight as anger mounts. Yesterday afternoon, after the 20 living hostages had returned home, US President Donald Trump spoke at the Knesset and declared “the historic dawn of the new Middle East.” Trump said it marked “not only the end of war, but the end of an age of terror and death and the beginning of the age of faith and hope and of God.” Horovitz paints a picture of the atmosphere at the Knesset and delves into noteworthy statements. Following his Knesset speech, Trump met with the leaders of Qatar, Egypt and Turkey and signed a document in Sharm el-Sheikh aimed at enshrining the Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas. Today, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he will seek the support of Gulf states, the United States and Europe for the reconstruction of Gaza under the new ceasefire deal, and he believes project financing will be provided swiftly. We discuss the viability of a phase two of Trump's peace plan. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. NETHERLANDS ENACTS WARTIME POLICY TO CONTROL CHINESE TECH COMPANY.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Europe: Yesterday evening the Dutch government announced that they have taken more direct control of the Nexperia corporation, which was carried out under a rarely-used wartime law. Nexperia is a Chinese-owned semiconductor chip manufacturer, which mostly provides computer chips for consumer-grade electronics. The Dutch government enacted the Availability of Goods Act, which enables the Netherlands to halt actions by the company that are deemed to be against the national defense interests of the nation.Analyst Comment: This is a big deal as it's yet another indicator of wartime preparations continuing. While most may think that a war with China will just involve the US, and be confined to the Far East, this move highlights the global nature of a potential conflict involving China. This move is not a straight-up seizure of all assets, the company is continuing to produce products as before. This decision is simply to take administrative control of the company, should the board of executives make decisions that are counter to the national security needs of the Netherlands.Western Asia: A brief war erupted and was concluded between Pakistan and Afghanistan over the weekend. Afghan forces conducted multiple small arms attacks on Pakistani border positions. Pakistan responded in kind by shelling random locations inside Afghanistan. After a few hours, Taliban forces withdrew and Pakistani forces stopped shelling.Middle East: President Trump arrived in Egypt for the various diplomatic events pertaining to the Gaza peace deal being signed. Various other heads of state from around the region (and Europe) also gathered for the celebratory peace summit.Analyst Comment: So far only one international incident has been the result of proceedings, with Turkey's Erdogan refusing to take part if Netanyahu was planning to show up as well. Allegedly, a mid-flight phone call was placed by Erdogan's team to pressure Netanyahu to not take part in the event, otherwise Erdogan's plane would turn around and return to Turkey. Netanyahu agreed to this request and has not flown to Egypt to take part in the events. Other than that brief squabble, nothing of note has taken place yet regarding the signing of the peace accord, and the various diplomatic speeches and events have carried on without much conflict.Africa: The government of Madagascar has collapsed as a general state of unrest reached it's peak over the weekend. President Andry Rajoelina was evacuated from the country by French military forces as rioters compromised the security situation around the Presidential residence.Analyst Comment: This is the latest nation to fall to the "Zoomer Uprising", a global trend of youth movements rising up to overthrow their respective third-world governments. One of the first to display this trend was the coup in Nepal a few weeks ago, which was carried out largely by the younger elements of the population. In Madagascar, the situation is very similar, with grievances being centered around electricity and water shortages which have gotten worse over the past few years.-HomeFront-Oregon: Over the weekend counter-ICE protests and demonstrations continued, with a few old tactics being implemented. Meet my friends, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton! If you love Verdict, the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show might also be in your audio wheelhouse. Politics, news analysis, and some pop culture and comedy thrown in too. Here’s a sample episode recapping four takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Radical Leftwing Violence President Donald Trump meets with the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and addresses the press on multiple issues. The hosts analyze Trump’s remarks, including his blunt assessment of rising left-wing violence and his warning that radical rhetoric from Democrats is fueling domestic terrorism. The discussion shifts to the U.S. economy, highlighting a surprising 3.8% GDP growth in Q2, record-high stock prices, and falling interest rates. Clay and Buck break down how lower mortgage rates could unlock the housing market and why economic growth—not spending cuts—may be the only path to balancing the federal budget. They also touch on Elon Musk’s prediction that AI-driven innovation could help offset ballooning deficits. Phony Comey The conversation zeroes in on James Comey, the former FBI Director, as reports suggest possible criminal charges for lying under oath before the statute of limitations expires. Clay and Buck revisit Comey’s controversial role in targeting General Michael Flynn and his history of aggressive prosecutions, including the Martha Stewart case. They stress the importance of accountability to prevent the U.S. from descending into “banana republic” politics. Autism and Tylenol Dr. Mehmet Oz, now serving as CMS Administrator under President Trump and HHS Secretary RFK Jr., joins the show to discuss groundbreaking developments in autism research, including promising results from leucovorin therapy for children and emerging concerns about acetaminophen (Tylenol) use during pregnancy. He emphasizes transparency in government health data and warns against overusing medications during pregnancy. The conversation explores the alarming rise in autism rates—now estimated at 1 in 31 children—and potential environmental and lifestyle factors, including allergies, chemical exposure, and older parental age. Dr. Oz underscores the need for urgent research and public awareness, noting that autism prevalence has increased fivefold in 25 years. Nerding Out with Ryan In-depth political analysis with guest Ryan Girdusky, host of It’s a Numbers Game. The discussion kicks off with the New Jersey governor’s race, where New Jersey Republican Jack Ciattarelli is gaining momentum against Democrat Mikie Sherrill. Despite Democrats’ historic voter advantage, recent polls show a tightening race, fueled by Sherrill’s controversies—including a viral debate stumble and a resurfaced Naval Academy cheating scandal from 1994. Girdusky explains how skyrocketing electricity costs, driven by data center energy demands, have become a top voter concern in both New Jersey and Virginia, shaping campaign strategies. The conversation shifts to Virginia’s gubernatorial showdown between Republican Winsome Sears and Democrat Abigail Spanberger. Sears is focusing on cultural issues like transgender participation in women’s sports and locker rooms, while Spanberger avoids clear answers, offering vague responses that Clay and Buck criticize as political double-speak. The hosts argue that Democrats in purple states often run as moderates but govern as progressives, warning voters about the stakes in these off-year elections. Next, attention turns to the New York City mayoral race, where progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani is the overwhelming favorite according to betting markets, despite a crowded field including Andrew Cuomo, Eric Adams, and Curtis Sliwa. Girdusky predicts Mamdani’s win could have national implications for Democrats in the 2026 midterms, as his far-left policies on policing and immigration could become a liability for the party’s brand.
