Alice Rothchild's path to becoming an anti-Zionist Jew took many years, many hard conversations, and required a lot of critical self-reflection. But she is part of a growing, powerful chorus of Jewish voices around the world speaking out against Israel's Occupation of Palestine and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians—and she is urging others to join that chorus. “The time is long overdue for liberal Zionists to find the courage to take a long hard look at their uncritical support for the actions of the Israeli state as it becomes increasingly indefensible and destabilizing, a pariah state that has lost its claim to be a so-called democracy (however flawed) that is endangering Jews in the country and abroad as well as Palestinians everywhere,” Rothchild writes in Common Dreams. In the latest installment of The Marc Steiner Show's ongoing series “Not in Our Name,” Marc speaks with Rothchild about her path to anti-Zionism, the endgame of Israel's genocidal assault on Gaza, and the need to liberate Jewish identity from the Zionist state of Israel.Alice Rothchild is a physician, author, and filmmaker with an interest in human rights and social justice. She practiced ob-gyn for almost 40 years and served as Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harvard Medical School. She is the author of numerous books, including: Broken Promises, Broken Dreams: Stories of Jewish and Palestinian Trauma and Resilience; Condition Critical: Life and Death in Israel/Palestine; Old Enough to Know, a 2024 Arab American Book Award winner; and Inspired and Outraged: The Making of a Feminist Physician. Explaining History (explaininghistory) (explaininghistory)

Britain, France, Canada and other western governments have today issued a statement decrying the blockade of Gaza after nearly two years of offering unconditional support to Israel. This follows weeks of increasingly critical headlines in newspapers and magazines that are traditionally staunch supporters of the Zionist state. What does this suggest? Some major transition in support for Israel and its crimes is clearly happening and here we explore why this might be.*****STOP PRESS*****I only ever talk about history on this podcast but I also have another life, yes, that of aspirant fantasy author and if that's your thing you can get a copy of my debut novel The Blood of Tharta, right here:Help the podcast to continue bringing you history each weekIf you enjoy the Explaining History podcast and its many years of content and would like to help the show continue, please consider supporting it in the following ways:If you want to go ad-free, you can take out a membership hereOrYou can support the podcast via Patreon hereOr you can just say some nice things about it here Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/explaininghistory. This morning we discuss my visit with Professor Ben Mollov and his students in Bar Ilan University's course, "Jewish-Arab Interreligious Dialogue." I describe Dr. Mollov's 25 years of research into how to improve relations between Arabs and Jews, and the course he has been teaching for seven years demonstrating the success of his approach. He has now written "Approaches to Jewish-Arab Interreligious Dialogue and Peacebuilding: Theory and Practice" which presents the data from his research and a practical model that can be replicated anywhere. Ben told me, "Each time I have an encounter with my students, I am in touch with the spirit that brought me to Israel, and allows me to experience the ideal of a better future for the Jewish homeland, and what the Zionist movement sought to achieve." Yes, it is possible, and these students will help make it happen. Rav Kook's Vision: Halakhah, Secular Knowledge, and the Renewal of Judaism. Those of us who know something about Rabbi Abraham Isaac HaKohen Kook's life and philosophy know about his being stuck outside of the Land of Israel during WWI, being the first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of British Mandatory Palestine, and his encouragement of the secular Zionists who turned swamps into vegetation. But not many of us have analyzed the personal notebooks that the Rav left, commonly known as Shemonah Kevatzim (eight collections). Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with Professor Marc B. Shapiro author of the acclaimed new book, Renewing the Old, Sanctifying the New: The Unique Vision of Rav Kook (Littman Library, 2025). Our conversation ranged from the philosophical underpinnings of Rav Kook's thought to its relevance for modern Orthodoxy and contemporary Jewish life. Using the notebooks and other information Marc B. Shapiro's Renewing the Old, Sanctifying the New offers a window into the philosophical heart of Rav Kook's approach to halakhah and secular knowledge, using Rav Kook's own words to illuminate his radical, yet deeply rooted, vision for modern Judaism. In April, Israel's Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir toured the United States in his first-ever trip to the country as a government official. Many Jewish groups refused to meet with Ben-Gvir, a follower of Meir Kahane whose extremism stands out even in an Israeli political scene awash in anti-Palestinian racism. But Ben-Gvir was welcomed by Chabad rabbis at Yale in New Haven, in South Florida, as well as at 770 Eastern Parkway, the Chabad headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The latter appearance sparked protests outside 770, which were met with violence by Chabadniks. In particular, a mob chanting “Death to Arabs” chased a female passerby for several blocks, kicking, spitting, and throwing objects at her. Other videos showed Chabadniks lighting a keffiyeh on fire, shoving and kicking members of the Hasidic anti-Zionist group Neturei Karta, and bloodying a female protester (herself a Jewish Israeli). To discuss Chabad's alignment with Ben-Gvir, its long-standing antipathy to leftist movements, and its uneasy relations within Crown Heights, Jewish Currents editor-in-chief Arielle Angel spoke with Jewish studies scholars Shaul Magid and Hadas Binyamini. They discuss Chabad's historic anti-Zionism, the quasi-Zionist cultural shifts that have solidified after October 7th, and the tensions the movement is currently navigating between its outreach orientation and its increasingly exclusionary politics. Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).”Texts Mentioned and Further Resources:The Rebbe, the Messiah, and the Scandal of Orthodox Indifference, David Berger“Israel's Class War Conservatives,” Joshua Leifer, Jewish Currents “The three-decade saga that led to the Crown Heights tunnels,” Chananya Groner, The Guardian“The Happy-Go-Lucky Jewish Group That Connects Trump and Putin,” Ben Schreckinger, PoliticoLetter to Hitler from the German Free Association for the Interests of Orthodox Jewry, 1933“Lubavitcher Hassidim Oppose Public Demonstrations on Behalf of Soviet Jews,” JTA“The New Heimish Populism,” Joshua Leifer, Jewish CurrentsRace and Religion Among the Chosen...

Disclaimer: This episode contains personal opinions and perspectives on complex geopolitical issues. The views expressed by the host and guest do not represent an official position on the Israel-Palestine conflict and are shared as part of an exploration of psychological and emotional dimensions of identity, trauma, and human connection. This conversation is meant to provoke thought and empathy rather than promote any particular political stance. In this thought-provoking episode, I speak with journalist and writer Joseph Dana about the nuanced relationship between Jewish identity, trauma, and Israel-Palestine. Joseph shares his personal journey from American Reform Judaism to Israeli immigration and eventual residence in Ramallah, offering unique insights as someone who has lived on both sides of the conflict. We explore how Holocaust trauma continues to shape modern Jewish identity, creating what Joseph describes as a "continuation of the Holocaust period" rather than a post-Holocaust era. This trauma response helps explain the powerful emotional connections many diaspora Jews feel toward Israel, even as the state pursues policies that may not serve Jewish safety worldwide. Joseph challenges the Zionist notion that Israel represents "the end of Jewish history," suggesting instead that we need to reconnect with the broader Jewish historical experience. This conversation examines identity, intergenerational trauma, and the possibility of finding common humanity across divides that often seem unbridgeable. Abu Dhabi has waged a war against Islamic civil society and non-state actors under the pretext of fighting “terrorism” and today acts as the primary means by which the small but effective federation of seven emirates prevents the rise of independent states in the Middle East. Behind every foiled attempt to wrestle power from Arab dictators is the UAE, which has used its petrodollars and economic prowess to curtail civil society activism. Its deep alliance with Israel and its Zionist project have given the UAE an unprecedented means to act as a spoiler in the region. Also, Joe Biden joins The View and doubles down on his fitness to run while throwing Kamala under the bus, and Elizabeth Warren humiliates herself by refusing to admit that Biden hasn't been mentally fit since Rogue One was in theaters. One book—with footnotes—changed everything. In this bold, eye-opening episode, Mark Casto uncovers how the Scofield Reference Bible reshaped Christian theology, redefined eschatology, and handed the Church a counterfeit narrative rooted in fear and politics. From the rise of dispensationalism to the dangerous marriage between Christian Zionism and geopolitical power, this episode tears down what never should've been built—and calls Kingdom builders to take their place in God's victorious plan. If you've ever felt something was off in how the modern church talks about the end times, Israel, or your purpose in the world—this is the episode you've been waiting for.

Today we have an interview with anti zionist JVP activist Dr Wendy Elisheva Somerson (Wes) who will  be talking about their brand new book called “An Anti-Zionist Path to Embodied Jewish Healing: Somatic Practices to Heal Historical Wounds, Unlearn Oppression, and Create a Liberated World to Come” This book is an Unapologetically anti-Zionist book  that is firmly rooted in Jewish spiritual values and a  liberatory model for healing for all activists and in particular  for anti zionists and  Zionist  “An Ani-Zionist path to Embodied Jewish Healing”  provides Body-based tools and faith-based practices for processing trauma, reclaiming our agency, and building a world where “never again” means “never again for anyone” Deftly addressing how  ancestral grief  from colonialism lives on in  all our bodies and keeps us from feeling safe—and how  that fear can become enacted on other people, Somerson also addresses how Israel manipulates its citizens to remain stuck in trauma and fear from the Holocaust and anti semitism and asks how do we reconcile a history of persecution with the state power of Israel today? Somerson's book  An Anti-Zionist Path to Embodied Jewish Healing shows us how  thru somatic healing  we can  strengthen our movement to build effective solidarity and purposeful power. They do  this by showing  how oppressive systems that exist outside of us also exist in our own bodies and how somatic healing and healing justice can help us find our aliveness to better understand our relationship to collective power to become better activists rooted in creating solidarities and collective power that will last and not turn against itself.  Wendy Elisheva Somerson (Wes) is a queer non-binary, disabled, Ashkenazi Jewish somatic healer, writer, activist, and visual artist and  One of the founders of the Seattle chapter of Jewish Voice for  Peace.  They have been active in Palestinian solidarity work for over two decades. Why haven't there been mass protests against Trump like there were in 2017?Part of the reason is the climate of fear and uncertainty that now proliferates throughout many communities, from student activists on IV league campuses to undocumented migrants. The arrests of pro-Palestine students Mahmoud Khalil, Mohsen Mahdawi and Rumeysa Ozturk among others, and the deportation of hundreds of immigrants to El Salvador, some of whom legal US residents, has left many in shock about the direction of the government and what it intends to do next.So how do activists and organisers continue to speak up without fearing for their own careers, their families and their freedom? This week on The Big Picture Podcast, we speak with Palestinian-American political activist and civil rights advocate Linda Sarsour.Sarsour was the co-chair of the 2017 women's march, which brought millions to the streets in a defiant protest of Donald Trump's first term in office - at the time it was the largest single day protest in US history. In 2020 she published her memoir We're Not Here To Be Bystanders. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode, and any guests you'd like us to have on our show. In a meticulously researched and impassioned episode of Geopolitics with Ghost, Ghost breaks down a seismic geopolitical pivot: Donald Trump is done waiting for Benjamin Netanyahu. Ghost walks through the unraveling of the U.S.-Israel relationship, using historical footage, expert analysis, and a barrage of sourced reports to argue that Trump is now embracing Saudi Arabia, brokering a nuclear deal without Israeli input, and potentially welcoming Iran into a new peace framework. From Trump's planned trip to the Middle East, with zero stops in Israel, to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth canceling his visit, Ghost connects the dots on a series of high-level moves that point to an intentional sidelining of Bibi and the neocon war machine. Huckabee, once a diehard Zionist, even breaks script to echo this shift. Ghost also delivers a hard-hitting exposé on the installation of known terrorist leader Abu Muhammad al-Julani as the Western-backed figurehead in Syria, Macron's shameless normalization efforts, and the broader strategy to Balkanize the Middle East under the guise of peace. As global leaders, including Putin, Xi, and various African revolutionaries, gather in Moscow for Victory Day, Ghost outlines how the sovereign alliance is realigning the global power structure. In one of the boldest predictions of the series yet, he forecasts a Trump-Putin meeting in Riyadh, Iran's unexpected entry into the Abraham Accords, and a coordinated rejection of Israel's Gaza occupation playbook. Candid, cutting, and unflinching, this episode is a masterclass in narrative deconstruction and global power analysis. Don't miss it.

Antisemitism is a real, violent, and pervasive scourge that spans the globe, but as anti-Zionist Jews like Molly Kraft argue, conflating opposition to Israel with antisemitism will make Jewish people less safe, not more. “Any systematic review of antisemitism must separate antisemitism from the Israeli state's claims to represent all Jewish people, or more precisely, all Jewish safety,” Kraft writes in The Grind. “This is both because no colonial state can provide safety as it destroys and expels Indigenous populations, but also because Jewish safety will only come through the destruction of all oppressive systems.” In the latest installment of “Not in Our Name,” a Marc Steiner Show series bringing together voices across the Jewish world speaking out against Israel's Occupation and destruction of Palestine, Marc Steiner speaks with Kraft about the need to accurately identify and fight antisemitism while forcefully rejecting Zionists' attempts to weaponize antisemitism to perpetuate genocidal violence and justify repressive censorship.Molly Kraft is a Canadian labor and community organizer, writer, a founding member of the Jews Say No to Genocide Coalition, and co-founder of Standing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) - Toronto.Producer: Rosette SewaliStudio Production: Cameron GranadinoAudio Post-Production: Alina NehlichHelp TRNN continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Sign up for our newsletterFollow us on BlueskyLike us on FacebookFollow us on TwitterDonate to support this podcast

On this edition of Parallax Views, Orthodox Rabbi Yaakov Shapiro — author of The Empty Wagon: Zionism's Journey from Identity Crisis to Identity Theft — returns to unpack the theological foundations of Jewish anti-Zionism and non-Zionism. Fresh off his participation in a protest against Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir's recent U.S. visit, Rabbi Shapiro explains why he believes Zionism is not only a political nationalist ideology distinct from Judaism, but one that misrepresents the Jewish people on the global stage. We explore the historical opposition of traditional Orthodox communities to Zionist projects, tracing the evolution of Zionism from the Revisionist movement of Ze'ev Jabotinsky to the early Religious Zionism of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, and ultimately to the far-right nationalism of figures like Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. We also distinguish Rabbi Shapiro's critique from that of Orthodox anti-Zionist groups like Neturei Karta; Rabbi Shapiro's argument is based in the question of Jewish identity rather than anything eschatalogical. Along the way, we discuss Meir Kahane and how his violent ideology culminated in his assassination; Rabbi Shapiro's personal encounters with Kahanists in 1970s Brooklyn; and his message to left-wing Zionists — namely, his belief that left Zionism inevitably paves the way for the far right. A must-listen for anyone interested in theology, nationalism, and the contested meanings of Jewish identity.

Send us a text“I would like to see Christians and Jews having a conversation about how we can stop hurting one another…” Today's topic is on Anti-Semitic (Anti-Jewish) sentiment or theology in Christianity. We discuss how defining antisemitism is difficult, how understanding Jesus's Jewish context is imperative to understanding Jesus, we touch on Jesus' relationships with women and how the “feminist Jesus” came about, and finally we hear AJ's vision for how Jews and Christians can relate to one another. I have been sitting on this episode since July of 2023 (nearly two years). Part of why I haven't released it sooner was because the timing didn't feel right with the ongoing genocide in Gaza. I didn't want to give the impression that by doing an episode on antisemitism that I was pro-the state of Israel's actions of apartheid and genocide against Palestinians. Then I came to the realization that not releasing this episode holds up a false dichotomy that you can't at one time, be against Palestinian suffering and Jewish suffering. Ironically there is a lot of Zionist rhetoric in fundamentalist Christianity that operates alongside anti semitic theology. And, as Christians (not just fundamentalist Christians) it is important to take a look at how the way we talk about Jesus is implicitly or explicitly anti-Jewish. AJ talks about simply naming Jesus and his actions as radical can be problematic. If you are looking for a Palestinian voice on the podcast, in season four you will get to hear a profound conversation I had with Issa Amro, a 2025 Nobel peace prize nominee who is a Palestinian Muslim working for nonviolent action and protest against the Israeli military and settlers. Bio: Dr. Amy-Jill Levine is the Rabbi Stanley M. Israeli Minister of National Security and supporter of extremist, far-right policies Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the United States in late April. From the time he got off his plane in Florida and throughout events in New Haven, CT, New York City and Washington, DC, he was met with opposition, protest and resistance. Even some Zionist groups opposed his visit, which included stops at Trump's Mar-A-Lago, a Jewish society tied to Yale university, the halls of Congress, and a fundraiser in New York. Ben-Gvir is a Kahanist, a follower of the rabbi Meir Kahane who supported and encouraged and was convicted of acts of terrorism in both Israel and the United States. He famously has a portrait of Baruch Goldstein in his living room, who killed 29 Palestinians in Hebron in 1994, and he repeats the calls of Goldstein and Kahane to expel all Palestinians from their homeland. And following in those ideological footsteps, Israel's government announced this week that it plans to seize Gaza entirely for the first time since it was forced to withdraw in 2005.Support the show

Facing charges that certain cartoons contained anti-Semitic tropes, J. Larry Jameson, interim president of the University of Pennsylvania, denounced Booth's illustrations as “reprehensible.” In a statement about his firing, Booth writes: “The reality – and something that, unfortunately, is not unique to Penn – is that colleges and universities nationwide have been way too complicit with the largely Republican-led efforts to target students and faculty members engaged in any and all speech rendered in support of trans/black/immigrant, and women's rights, free speech, the independent press, academic freedom, and medical research – speech that also voices bold criticism of right-wing nationalism, genocide, apartheid, fascism, and specifically the Israeli assault on Palestine.”In this special edition of The Marc Steiner Show, Marc sits down with Booth in the TRNN studio in Baltimore to discuss the events that led to his firing, the purpose and effects of political art, and how to respond to the repressive crackdown on art and dissent as genocide is unfolding and fascism is rising. Producer: Rosette SewaliStudio Production / Video Post-Production: Cameron Granadino Audio Post-Production: Alina NehlichHelp TRNN continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Sign up for our newsletterFollow us on BlueskyLike us on FacebookFollow us on TwitterDonate to support this podcast

Free speech has become one of the most contentious issues in American politics, but what does it actually mean today? On the GZERO World podcast, Ian Bremmer sits down with conservative legal scholar Ilya Shapiro of the Manhattan Institute and New York Times free speech reporter Jeremy Peters. They discuss  how free expression is being defined—and challenged—on university campuses and by the Trump administration, particularly when it comes to national immigration policy. “The dynamic of ‘free speech for me but not for thee' is prevalent,” Shapiro warns, pointing to inconsistent enforcement of campus speech rules and a broader “illiberalism” taking hold in higher education. The conversation turns to the Trump administration's aggressive response to Israel/Gaza protests, including efforts to penalize non-citizen students for their political speech. Peters cautions that this approach may violate the very rights the administration claims to defend. “Rather than execute a clean policy to support free speech,” he says, “they're using blunt force to try to deport people who didn't do anything terribly wrong.” The potential legal battles ahead could determine how far the government can go in defining speech as a national security issue—especially for non-citizens.Both guests acknowledge that antisemitism on campus has become a flashpoint, but differ on how it's being addressed. Shapiro argues that while not all anti-Israel sentiment is antisemitic, many protesters are crossing that line: “It's possible to be anti-Zionist without being antisemitic, but it's very rare in my experience.” Peters agrees the issue is complex and evolving, noting that universities “seem much more focused on preventing antisemitism than they were just a year ago.” Together, the guests raise urgent questions about the balance between expression, identity, and institutional responsibility in a sharply divided political landscape.Host: Ian BremmerGuest: Ilya Shapiro & Jeremy Peters Subscribe to the GZERO World with Ian Bremmer Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred podcast platform, to receive new episodes as soon as they're published.

In this episode, we speak with Dr. Charles H.F. Davis III about the increasingly repressive conditions on university campuses, particularly in the context of Columbia University's caving in to federal pressures under the thumb of Trump's administration. We explore the broader implications of these concessions at the expense of liberalized notions of intellectual and academic freedom, student activism, and the role of universities as sites of political struggle. Dr. Davis highlights the historical and ongoing repression of student activism, particularly pro-Palestinian movements, and critiques the legal and institutional frameworks that perpetuate these violences. We also delve into the limitations of liberalism in fending off fascist infringement and the active participation of universities in maintaining these structures of domination. We also touch on the historical collaboration between Zionist organizations and U.S. universities, the erosion of diversity and inclusion initiatives, and the broader implications for the future of higher education. Dr. Charles H.F. Davis III is a third-generation educator, organizer, and artist. He is a faculty member in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education and director of the Campus Abolition Research Lab at the University of Michigan. His research and teaching broadly explore the racialized consequences of higher education on society, including the role of colleges and universities in limiting the life-making possibilities of Black and other racialized communities. After being embarrassed over his lack of an argument and insistence on semantic minutiae during his appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast, British political commentator Douglas Murray raced to the New York Post to pen an opinion piece demanding better “standards” for podcasters like Rogan. Except while decrying the lack of “truth” and “honesty” of Rogan and others, Murray lets loose with a torrent of his own dishonesty and half-truths.  Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss how laughable it is to suggest a code of standards for podcasters — meaning fealty to the Zionist party line — when such standards are noticeably absent in mainstream journalism. Plus segments on the UK following through on plans to dim the sun to combat climate change and a recent poll showing a sharp drop in Americans' support for Israel. Also featuring Mike MacRae, Norman Finkelstein and Stef Zamorano. And a phone call from George Clooney!
