Show Notes Episode 480: Find Me…Fabio This week Host Dave Bledsoe was kicked out of a karaoke bar for attempting to perform a “Full Monty Version” of Rod Stewart's “If You Want My Body”. (Again) On the show this week we begin our tribute to Love (Exciting and New) with the man face and body synonymous with romance in the 90's: Fabio Fanzoni.  Along the way we learn that Dave thought he was sexy once. (He wasn't) Then we dive right into the history of the medium that made Fabio so famous. (Sense and Sensibility walked so Texas Splendor could inspire masturbatory fantasies.) Then we meet the man meat, Fabio.  From his origins as a slightly naughty altar boy in Italy, to his time in the Italian Army and finally his arrival in the United States with nothing but a few dollars and a dream. (Also the perfect body and the perfect face.) We trace his career from the covers of slightly smutty books to his meeting with the goose that killed the golden career. Our Sponsor this week is Gordon's Goose Guard, got geese, get Gordon's. We open the show with footage from Fabio's last ride and close with Andy Eversole, whose shirt isn't good enough for him. It's finally time to take a specific look at the fighting forces of one of the major players in our story. And since this is a new kind of episode for me, I'm happy that I'm taking the baby step of talking about one of the smaller examples. Italy gets maligned a lot during this period, and there are good reasons for this, but today I not only want to cover how its army worked, but also where these deficiencies came from.    Questions? Calogero "Carlos" Todaro, renowned for his expertise in all things relating to wine, joins Discover Lafayette to share his adventures in the U. S. over the past sixty-two years. Carlos is well-known in the Lafayette area for his hard work ethic and desire to be of service to others. For years, he and his brother, Gene, were the resident wine experts at Marcello's Wine Market in Lafayette. After the sale of Marcello's last year, Carlos retired from working full time, but is still providing his expertise for pairing wines with food for the grateful customers of Champagne's Market in the Oil Center. "I have always been fortunate to have met many nice, kind and generous people throughout my life. People have been kind to me in so many ways. I try to repay as best I can." Carlos has a rich family history. A native of Palermo, the capital of the Italian island of Sicily, he's lived in the U. S. since 1961 when the family moved to New Orleans from Sicily. Interestingly, Carlos' dad was already a U. S. Citizen, having been born in Pueblo CO in 1915; his dad's family returned to Sicily when he was young. After his dad served in the Italian Army in WWII, he realized he wanted to return to the U. S. Carlos joked that his dad wrote a letter to then U. S. Senator John Kennedy asking for help and he got his Visa a few months later! Pictured in Palermo, Sicily, 1956, is the Todaro family send-off of cousin Blaise Todaro, who was headed to New Orleans. Calogero "Carlos" Todaro would follow with his immediate family members in 1961 where they relocated to New Orleans to live with Aunt Lucy. No one in Carlos' family spoke English when they moved to the U. S. The "Marcello's name is a tribute to brother, Marcello Todaro, who attended USL and realized there was no authentic Italian restaurant in Lafayette. Brother Gene moved to Lafayette to assist with opening the restaurant, and along with Marcello, opened the original Marcello's on the Abbeville Highway in 1981. Carlos moved to Lafayette to open up a grocery store next door to Marcello's, bringing along his expertise as a longtime manager of A & P in New Orleans. "Mama (Rosalie Todaro) was a very good cook, using a minimum of spices and the least amount of money. Pasta with broccoli, for example, a staple of Sicily. Feed a whole family of five people within your budget. We ate very little meat and chicken was a treat." Marcello's enjoyed great success and moved into a larger space at Time Plaza where it remained until the oil bust of 1987/88 forced its closure. Todaro family pictured in Glen Ellen, CA for Marcello's wedding in 1990. Carlos moved to Memphis with his brother, Marcello, to sell wine for a liquor company and met many of the greats in the industry such as Jordan and Fetzer. In the meantime, brother Gene opened two liquor stores, one in New Orleans and one in Lafayette in the old La Promenade Mall. When Gene decided to reopen Marcello's Restaurant in 1993, Marcello and Carlos returned from Memphis to help in the family venture. Carlos reminisced how they started selling wine on the sidewalk outside of Marcello's to make extra money to float the restaurant's expenses. In 1994/95, Marcello's Market moved to its current location at 2800 Johnston Street and Carlos says, "It's been successful since Day One." It was the first wine retailer in the area, way before Total Wines or other box stores. With all of the acumen and discernment Carlos brought to Marcello's Wine Market, he says he never trained formally. "I am self taught. You don't really know anything until you go to wineries and see the process. I always learn from others. There is always someone who knows more than you." Dustin andJolie Poirier, Kyle and Stefanie Kellner, and Tim Metcalf acquired Marcello's Wine Market in 2023 from owners Carlos and Gene Todaro. Marcello's has been the place to go for decades for all liquor needs including wine, beer, spirits, mixers,

This episode is pretty remarkable. I interviewed author and publisher, Mick Prodger, alongside Vito Cellini — who has lived a TV-series-worthy life. Vito was born in New York City and raised in Italy. He became street tough as a gangster by the time World War II kicked off and was conscripted into the Italian Army. Upon learning the Italians would fight against the Americans, Vito had deserted, and went to join the now legendary Tito's Partisans in Yugoslavia to fight against the Nazis. Towards the end of the war, Vito worked as a fixer for the Office of Strategic Services or OSS — the precursor to the CIA — as well as the British Special Operations Executive or SOE. During this period, Vito says he carried out “dirty work” — which meant taking out criminals operating the sophisticated black markets that stole and resold war supplies like weapons, vehicle parts, medicine from Allied shipments near Italian ports. After the war, Vito moved back to the US, where he became a prolific inventor and gun manufacturer with 19 patents to his name, including Cellini Stabilizers, which according to Vito, “made shooting a .45 feel like shooting a .22.” His clients and friends were Army Delta Force legends like Walter Shumate and Dick Meadows. Vito has been involved in some pretty crazy and shady events throughout history. In the 70s and 80s, Vito's life reads like a spy novel. He was embroiled in the assassination of a high profile journalist while advising Nicaragua's President; he negotiated deals with the Italian Mafia in Naples on behalf of the US government; and he carried a machine gun on hunting trips to Mexico alongside Ruben Zuno, a very powerful member of the Guadalajara cartel who was later believed to be involved in the murder of a DEA agent. Vito turns 99-years-old on August 14th and Mick tells me he is still driving — like an Italian — plays poker and goes hunting. We couldn't possibly cover everything in this interview. So treat this next hour or so to hear the man himself share his story. And if you're curious in the finer details, you can read about Vito's extraordinary life in his book Cellini: Freedom Fighter Follow on Instagram: @latenighthistory

Benvenuti a tutti to our listeners! We welcome you to Our Italian Legacy - Milwaukee Italians podcast. In this podcast, we will celebrate our Italian heritage, history and the impact by Italians in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We will share our families stories in hopes of keeping our and their memories alive. We will explore the families of our members- past and present. This podcast is brought to you by the Italian Community Center of Milwaukee, WI, sponsored by Joseph Emanuele, that's me, and music by Milwaukee Apfelblaser. In this episode, we will first be hearing from Vincent Emanuele, my uncle, being interviewed by Diane Vecchio, past professor at the University of WI-Milwaukee. Diane and Larry Baldassaro, both professors at UW-Milwaukee, lead a project called Oral History of Italians in Milwaukee. We were able to acquire these oral recordings and will be featuring them monthly in our podcast series. We are working with the families to continue the oral history where the families left off when this project was completed in 1991. Here is some background information on the project. In 1991, the UW-Milwaukee Department of French and Italian conducted the “Oral History of Italians in Milwaukee” project, a collection of interviews concerning Italian American life in early 20th century Milwaukee. It was funded by a grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Committee and co-sponsored by the Italian Community Center, the project was directed by Larry Baldassaro, now Professor Emeritus of Italian at UWM. He and Diane Vecchio, now Professor of History at Furman University, conducted 20 interviews with Italian immigrants to Milwaukee and children of early immigrants. The fascinating memories shared by these men and women provide a vivid portrait of what it was like to grow up Italian in Milwaukee from the 1900s through the 1940s. There are accounts of their difficult voyages to America, the community and character of the old Third Ward, how people made a living, and day-to-day life in an Italian home. I am the nephew of Vincent Emanuele and today I am honored to present his story and share more of what was to come later. Vincent Emanuele's parents were born in Sicily, and his father spent time in America as a child. After returning to Italy to serve in the Italian Army, Vincent's father met and married Vincent's mother, and together moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Vincent's father's work as a plasterer brought them to Milwaukee during the Great Depression. In his interview Vincent discusses his education, his memories of the houses in the old Third Ward, living in poverty during the Depression, his experiences with Italian-American discrimination, and his Mother's homemaking. At the time of his interview Vincent was on the Board of Directors of the Italian Community Center.

Mussolini's War: Fascist Italy from Triumph to Collapse: 1935-1943 is a remarkable new history from John Gooch, evoking the centrality of Italy to World War II. Outlining the brief rise and triumph of the Fascists, followed by the disastrous fall of the Italian military campaign. While staying closely aligned with Hitler, Mussolini remained carefully neutral until the summer of 1940. At that moment, with the wholly unexpected and sudden collapse of the French and British armies, Mussolini declared war on the Allies in the hope of making territorial gains in southern France and Africa. This decision proved a horrifying miscalculation, dooming Italy to its own prolonged and unwinnable war, immense casualties, and an Allied invasion in 1943 that ushered in a terrible new era for the country. John Gooch is one of the world's leading writers on Italy and the two world wars. His books include Mussolini and His Generals and The Italian Army and the First World War. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Leeds. In 2010 the President of Italy appointed him Cavaliere dell'Ordine della Stella della Solidarieta' Italiana. John lives in England. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

GB2RS NEWS Sunday the 15th of November 2020 The news headlines: Hope QSO Parties over Christmas RSGB responds to Ofcom’s second EMF consultation RCF help is available Following the successful Hope QSO Parties earlier in the year, the HF Contest Committee is launching two further short Christmas Hope Party series to run as part of the Society’s ‘Get on the air for Christmas’ campaign with the NHS. The first starts on Monday the 21st of December and the second on Monday the 4th of January. Each series has two phone, two CW, two RTTY and two FT4 events. For more information, including a link to the rules, see the RSGB website www.rsgb.org/gota4c. RSGB has responded to Ofcom’s second consultation document on limiting Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields. Our response can be found on the RSGB website http://rsgb.org.uk/emf. Please remember the deadline is tight; all responses need to be in to Ofcom by 5pm on Monday the 16th of November. The RSGB would encourage you to respond yourself and thank all those who have done so already. The Trustees of the Radio Communications Foundation have noted the surge in newcomers to amateur radio since lockdown. Newcomers may not be aware that RCF is a charity that is committed to supporting radio clubs in schools, colleges and universities. If any readers need help in establishing, resurrecting or improving a school, college or university amateur radio club they should contact the RCF. Details can be found at https://commsfoundation.org/contact-the-rcf/. The RCF continues to sponsor a number of Arkwright Engineering Scholarships and works with the UK Electronics Skills Federation. The IARU Region 1 Political Relations Committee attended an European workshop that is drafting the next radio spectrum programme for the 2025 – 2030 period. Topics included strategic spectrum issues, climate change and EMF. The IARU was pleased to be able to submit a contribution that is now available with inputs from other stakeholders at www.iaru-r1.org/2020/rspg-workshop-on-rspp. We received sad news this week. John Devoldere, ON4UN became a Silent Key on the 9th of November. Well-known as a lowband DXer, he had been in failing health for some time. In addition to his enthusiasm for operating, he may be best known as the author of Low-Band DXing and HF Ethics and Operating that was adopted by the IARU. Our thoughts are with his family and friends around the world. Dave Johnson, G4DPZ gave an online satellite talk to Mid Ulster ARC and the video is now available on the club’s YouTube channel. He covered the many amateur satellites in Low Earth Orbit that operate in the 145.8-146MHz and 435-438MHz satellite bands, plus the QO-100 geostationary satellite that uses 2.4GHz and 10GHz. Another talk is an evening with Laurie Margolis, G3UML, the BBC journalist and News Editor who was the radio amateur that broke news of the Falkland Islands invasion in 1982. See www.youtube.com/MuarcMedia/videos. The RSGB is taking part in December YOTA Month but the Covid-19 restrictions will make the event very different this year. If you are a parent with a newly-licensed youngster in your family, you can apply to host the callsign GB20YOTA safely from your own home. You must be a Full licence holder to apply for the callsign. You can book an appointment slot within a set calendar shown on the GB20YOTA page on QRZ.com. To register your interest, or to reserve an operating slot, contact RSGB YOTA Month Coordinator Jamie, M0SDV via email to yota.month@rsgb.org.uk. Now the special event news The 2nd of November marked the centennial of US radio station KDKA. The station originally began operations in 1916 as an amateur radio station, callsign 8XK. After WW1, the operators reorganised the station as a commercial AM radio station. To celebrate this historic milestone, Pittsburgh area amateur radio operators will take to the airwaves with a series of special event stations, K3A, K3D, K3K, and W8XK. These will be set up at several locations in Pennsylvania during November. Members of UBA Section KTK will be active as OP0PEACE until the 30th of November to commemorate the end of World War I. QSL via the operator's instructions and logsearch on Club Log. Now the DX news Remo, HB9SHD plans to be active as 8Q7RM from Kandolhu Island, IOTA reference AS-013, until the 29th of November. Activity will be holiday-style on HF using CW, SSB and digital modes. QSL via HB9SHD. Robert, S53R plans to continue working in his spare time as T6AA in the Afghan capital city of Kabul, until mid-December. Giorgio, IU5HWS is stationed in Iraq with the Italian Army and expects to remain there until around the 20th of January. The Iraqi Amateur Radio Society has authorised him to operate as YI9/IU5HWS until his requested callsign of YI9WS is granted by the National Communications and Media Commission. Now the contest news Please remember to check before the contest for any new rules due to lockdown and social distancing, which may differ around the world. The RSGB strongly advises obeying your own national and local government’s advice. The WAE DX RTTY contest ends its 48-hour run at 2359UTC today, the 15th. Using the 3.5 to 28MHz contest bands, the exchange is signal report and serial number. Today, the 15th, the UK Microwave group’s Low Band contest runs from 1000 to 1400UTC. Using the 1.3 to 3.4GHz bands, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. On Monday, the 9th FT4 series contest runs from 2000 to 2130UTC. Using the 3.5MHz band, the exchange is signal report and 4-character location. On Tuesday the 1.3GHz UK Activity Contest runs from 2000 to 2230UTC. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Thursday sees the 70MHz UK Activity Contest running from 2000 to 2230UTC. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Next Saturday, the 21st, the Second 1.8MHz contest runs from 1900 to 2300UTC. It’s CW only and the exchange is signal report, serial number and District code. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA & G4BAO on Friday the 13th of November. The Sun really shone last week, in more ways than one. Large sunspot group 2781 pushed the solar flux index to 91 with a sunspot number of 40 at the weekend, a figure that we haven’t seen for many years. This was coupled with quiet geomagnetic conditions with a maximum Kp index of two, but frequently it was at one or zero. These figures, coupled with a seasonal upturn in HF propagation, meant there was DX to be worked. 7Q7RU, the Russian Robinson Club DXpedition to Malawi, has been logged in the UK on many bands, including 15 metres. Australia has also put in an appearance on 10 metres, with VK6NC being worked on SSB with a 5 and 8 signal for Gary, G0FWX. New Zealand has also been workable on the short path with John, ZL2JBR being very loud on 20m SSB around 14.210 to 14.215MHz on many days around 0830 to 0930UTC. There probably hasn’t been a better time for HF propagation for quite a few years. As this report was being written, new sunspot group 2782 was just showing around the edge of the Sun and this could develop as the weekend goes on. NOAA predicts the SFI will be in the range 78-80 next week, although this rather depends upon how region 2782 develops. Geomagnetic conditions are unlikely to be quite as quiet next week, with NOAA predicting a maximum Kp index of three, rising to five on Friday the 20th. The first part of the week might therefore be the best choice for HF DXing. And now the VHF and up propagation news. The Leonids meteor shower reaches its peak in the hours before dawn on Tuesday, the 17th of November. So be ready for some good but short-lived meteor scatter conditions. The shower has a Zenithal Hourly Rate of 15, but it is known for producing meteor storms at various times in recent history. The last Leonid Storm was in 2001, but the first great meteor storm of modern times was the 1833 Leonids, kicking off the scientific study of meteors. The current spell of changeable weather is likely to set the template for terrestrial propagation this coming week. That is to say, periods of wet and windy weather when active weather fronts cross the country interspersed by brighter showery interludes. All of these features are capable of providing some good rain scatter conditions on the GHz bands. Because of this unsettled pattern, high pressure is banished to the south of the UK, over France, so if there are any vestiges of Tropo it will be most likely from southern England across the Channel. The Moon was at perigee yesterday, so path losses are still low, but with minimum declination on Wednesday, Moon visibility windows are short. 144MHz sky noise peaks at nearly 3300K on Tuesday but drops back to below 300K again by the end of next week. And that’s all from the propagation team this week.

Gabriele Corcos is the Creator, host, and producer of Extra Virgin on Cooking Channel/Food Network, an NYT Bestselling author, as well as a James Beard Award Recipient, and Food Futurist.   He joins me on the podcast this week for a rich conversation about his decision to change course and move back to his hometown in the Tuscan countryside with his family. During our time together we explored the notion of how changing course does help you confront new challenges and learn more about yourself. This option is always available, it is never too late. Gabriele’s interest in technology and utilizing it to live off the land is fascinating. He helps us reimagine ways to incorporate technology into what feels like a traditional endeavor.  We also discussed being practical versus continuing to dream. Join us for this thought-provoking and inspiring conversation.   Here’s more about Gabriele and his career journey: Gabriele has never been a great student. Born to a surgeon and a schoolteacher, he was raised with high expectations. He had to fulfill my role in society.  According to his parents, that only could be achieved by earning a college degree. He gave it his best shot. Gabriele even enlisted in the Italian Army and studied medicine for several years.  Yet, Gabriele freaked out when he approached graduation and deployment simultaneously.  Gabriele decided to devote himself to music. He sold his Ducati, his treasured motorcycle, which totally broke his heart, and left for Brazil to study drums. Gabriele kept traveling for a time, studying with drumming masters in Cuba and around Europe.   He has spent time in wonderful places and has had the opportunity to perform with great talent. Gabriele’s barn in Fiesole became a small museum of drums from all over the world.  Gabriele thought he finally found himself. Music set him free!  Then one day, in Florence, Gabriele met Debi Mazar, and she swept him away. They fell in love with the hot summer of 2001. He hugged his family goodbye and moved to California.  For the first time in his life, HE LEFT HIS FARM BEHIND without plans of returning anytime soon.  Once Gabriele arrived in the US It did not take him too long to realize that what he always had taken for granted, what he had always considered an inevitable boring and physically demanding part of his life in the Tuscan countryside would be an incredible asset on which he could build a career. Like most Italian men he was raised in front of the stove and already spent most of his life cooking.   Once again, Gabriele reinvented himself. All the work he had done in the vineyard, in the olive tree orchard, in his grandmother’s vegetable garden, all the stories, and recipes he had learned from generations of women in my family, all the heritage traditions he was exposed to by the farmers, the hunters, and their wives… all these lives again in the work Gabriele does, the recipes he cooks, and the way he celebrates Tuscany. This is perfect for anyone who has contemplated leaving a big city for life in the countryside of Italy. Gabriele has lived in both settings and now he is starting a new chapter of his life along with Debi Mazar his wife on the path towards restoring his family’s estate in the countryside.   Highlights: What has changed in the old country Tuscan countryside over the last 20 years. (6:57) How New York City compares to other cities in the world through the lens of a restauranteur/chef.  Plus, NYC vs. California and building a cocoon or being open to confronting yourself to people.  (9:04) Learning how to cook and leverage his talent despite not being a classically trained chef. (10:36) Needing to sell as many dishes as pasta to meet a quota vs. sharing a glass of wine and leaving you fulfilled – cooking as an act of love and how NY striped this away after 5 years with his Brooklyn-based restaurant. (12:48) What’s next after owning an NYC restaurant and how Gabriele wishes to explore tech + farming + hospitality. (15:54) Advice to his daughters on how to chart their own career paths – the value of clean air and arable land. (22:21) How New York helped him discover his own ambitions. (23:57) Gabriele shares how he was raised by a surgeon and therefore he was on the path to becoming a doctor in the Italian Army. (24:54) However, he chose not to sign his life away to continue on his Army path and worked to build his music career around the world. (26:29) His decision to switch from music to the food business and TV production in California – and we explore the notion of when what you know is not enough to be competitive. (27:28) Changing lives is scary but he likes the fight and learns more every time – now he is in the country and he is not a farmer, so this is a new experience for him too. (30:57)  How he thinks about careers – you should feel attracted and compelled about your work, exhausted but excited about your work. (39:33) Gabriele’s desire to use modern technology, for things like Climate Change, in the traditional Italian countryside. (41:31) What can be passed down to the next generation other than another luxury hotel with a helipad? (49:13) Food should not be discriminated against. (50:59) Changing lives helps you know yourself better…you keep confronting yourself with new things, you just need to be courageous and it’s a luxury or privilege. (50:10) How do you pick one interest to follow and focus on? (55:02) When his dream becomes a reality on his family estate what would his dream be for the kids who visit? (1:01:32) Finding your place in the world is one of the hardest things to do. (1:02:00) Love requires sacrifices…needing to be a dad vs. going on tour with Shakira. On Saturday the 14th, the Club Calls contest runs from 2000 to 2300UTC. Using SSB and CW on the 1.8MHz band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and your club information. Next weekend, the WAE DX RTTY contest runs from 0000UTC on the 14th to 2359UTC on the 15th. Using the 3.5 to 28MHz contest bands, the exchange is signal report and serial number. On Sunday the 15th, the UK Microwave group’s Low Band contest runs from 1000 to 1400UTC. Using the 1.3 to 3.4GHz bands, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Friday the 6th of November. Sunspots are a bit like buses. You wait forever and three come along at once! Last week we had active regions 2778 and 2779, which pushed the solar flux index up to 88. This week we have sunspot region 2781, which is a monster. At the time of writing, this region had pushed the SFI to 88 again, but it has been active in terms of solar flares. These have been minor C-class events, so not too much to worry about. The good news is that geomagnetic conditions have been very settled over the past week, with the Kp index running between zero and two. This no doubt helped ionospheric propagation. There was some good DX reported over the past seven days. TX0T, the DXpedition to Tatakoto Atoll, OC-298, in French Polynesia, has been worked by several stations in the UK. The Far East has also been workable, especially on FT8, where Indonesia, China and Japan have all been spotted. Next week, NOAA predicts the SFI will be in the range 72-76. The good news is that geomagnetic conditions are predicted to be quiet with a maximum Kp index of two. We may get some radio blackouts or sudden ionospheric disturbances as a result of M- or C-class solar flares from active region 2781, but these are difficult to predict. Radio blackouts occur when the strong, sudden burst of X-rays from a solar flare hits the Earth's atmosphere, blocking high-frequency radio signals in the D-region of the ionosphere. NOAA puts the probability of an R1/R2 radio blackout at 15%, and an R3 radio blackout at just 5%. Overall then, it looks like a good week for HF propagation. And now the VHF and up propagation news. There was a brief return of Tropo at the end of the last week. The first of this autumn’s opportunities was complete with fog below the inversion layer. Unfortunately, the related high and its Tropo is not due to last and indeed will have probably moved away during the weekend. It does, though, show the capability of a good temperature inversion with foggy air trapped below it to produce good Tropo. The last vestiges of it are now clearing away across the northern North Sea, but may still be just worth exploring for the 48th Marconi Memorial VHF CW Contest on Sunday. During the weekend, the weather pattern changes to a more unsettled type, which remains dominant through the coming week. This will bring GHz band rain scatter, but also some strong winds at times. As we approach the Leonids meteor shower on the 17th we also have a smaller shower, the Northern Taurids, peaking this Thursday, so meteor scatter conditions should be above average. It is also worth the occasional check for Sporadic-E on FT8 on 10m and 6m. The Moon’s declination is high but starting to fall, going negative on Thursday, so Moon visibility windows will shorten. The Moon is at perigee next Saturday so path losses are low. 144MHz sky noise is low for most of the week. And that’s all from the propagation team this week.

Leonarda Cianciulli, known as “The Soap-Maker of Correggio,” had a volatile childhood and lived in fear that the predictions of a fortune-teller who told her that every single one of her children would die, would actually come true. When her oldest son, Guiseppe, was drafted into the Italian Army ahead of the country’s entrance into World War II, Leonarda decided that, in order to protect her son from harm, she needed to offer up a human sacrifice, hoping that God would accept the death of someone else in place of her son. She would murder three women over a year-long period by telling these women that she had found a new prospect for them in a different city, either a potential husband or a new job. Leonarda used the fat she rendered from the bodies as she boiled them down to make soap and dried the blood of her victims, which she then added to her tea cake recipes. Both the soaps and the tea cakes were sold to customers in her shop. After her capture, she confessed to all three murders after her son was arrested for them and didn’t want to see him take the blame for her crimes.Join me on social media by following Mask of Sanity on Instagram (@maskofsanitythepodcast) and Twitter (@masksanitypod) for more updates on upcoming episodes! Some of the people who influenced his career and the wisdom he learned from those educators. The band programs at Meridien High School and the University of Southern Mississippi. Regionalism in school band programs and traditions around the country and the success of the major universities in the Southeast. Tom’s work with wind bands in Italy and the interviews in the ADA archives at the University of Maryland. Links: Thomas Fraschillo American Bandmasters Recordings Zaninelli: Roma Sacra Biography: Thomas V. Fraschillo, DMA, has served as a catalyst and mentor for members of the teaching profession. His high standards of performance have had a sustained influence on ensembles at every level, and his performances serve as models in both the professional or academic arena. Through his recordings, The Music of Luigi Zaninelli and The University of Southern Mississippi Wind Ensemble LIVE IN ITALY (recorded in Italy), and his publishing, conducting, and lecturing in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia, he is considered an international musician/scholar. His publications, translations from the original Italian of Alessandro Vessella’s Studi di strumentazione (Instrumentation Studies), and La Tecnica dell’orchestra contemporanea (The Technique of Contemporary Orchestration) by Alfredo Casella and Vittorio Mortari, both published by BMG Ricordi, Milan, have put his name in libraries of the entire English speaking world. As a writer/scholar Dr. Fraschillo is a contributing editor to the American Grove Dictionary, 2nd Edition and serves as a frequent conductor and lecturer in Italy. His most recent appearances in Italy have been with La Banda dell’esercito/The Italian Army Band in Rome. One of his most significant engagements with them signaled a very important milestone for the Italian Army in that Dr. Fraschillo was the first American-born conductor to have been invited to appear in a public performance by what is considered Italy’s most prestigious military concert band. The concert with Dr. Fraschillo conducting was the opening concert of the International Festival in Spoleto, “The Festival of Two Worlds, Festival dei due mondi.” His appearance was enormously significant for conductors of bands in that the opening performance featured such international artists as Gian Carlo Menotti, the renowned composer, the Orchestra and Giuseppe Verdi Chorus of Milan, and the Italian actress, Claudia Cardinale. Finally, in Italy Dr. Fraschillo often serves as a member of the judging panel for many international festivals, most notably the Concorso Internazionale di Composizione “R. Marenco” di Novi Ligure, and the Concorso Internazionale di Composizione Originale per Banda di Corciano. Aside from Dr. Fraschillo’s work in Europe, he is often engaged throughout the continents of Asia, and Australia. The Melbourne, Australia, Summer Youth Music Program has invited Dr. Fraschillo to be their guest conductor for their summer session for five years. In addition the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association has invited him to lecture and to adjudicate at their large ensemble festivals. Dr. Fraschillo’s other work in the Pacific Rim includes having served as clinician and guest conductor of the Central Armed Forces Band in Singapore and as conductor of the Singapore All-College Band sponsored by the Wind Band Association of Singapore. In 2009 and 2010 Dr. Fraschillo served as Artistic Director for the weeklong Winter Band Festival at Disney, Hong Kong. Dr. Fraschillo has recently been recognized by election to the National Band Association’s Hall of Fame of Distinguished Conductors, a distinct honor that recognizes his lengthy career as a public school, university, and professional conductor. Dr. Fraschillo devoted a significant amount of his career to the education of young people in Mississippi. For example his ten-year tenure at Meridian High School was highlighted by a performance at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious music event for wind and string educators. The invitation was only the second to have been given to a band from Mississippi. Dr. Fraschillo’s Meridian students obtained successes not before reached, for he taught and helped place the first African-American students in the Mississippi All-State Band. Not only were they among the first minority members, but they were also the first African-Americans to attain the very highest positions in the group. Dr. Fraschillo has attained a significant level in the realm of international leadership in that he serves as a past president of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, past president of the world’s largest organization for band directors, the National Band Association, and President of the CBDNA Southern Division.

I think Fabio is one of the most interesting guys I’ve met in a long while and hearing his story and advice in recording this podcast only cemented this view. He’s been a musician, an engineer, a chef, an officer in the Italian Army and touches on all of this during our conversation. All of these experiences in his journey provided valuable learnings as he explains. He always had a passion for teaching, something ignited by the movie Dead Poets Society in the 80’s, and when he started working for IBM in the late 90’s, this desire resurface and it became very clear to Fabio that it was what he wanted to do. Within a year, he made this happen and his real educational journey started to move forward. He set his goal and his determination and drive made this happen. This happened again for Fabio in 2006 when he moved to the IMI and started out his journey as a trainer and coach. Now he’s doing something that’s relevant, important and key to his need and want as a coach. As he explains, it’s challenging and exciting day by day. He’s finding enjoyment in helping others fulfil their purpose and meaning. Every person is different and Fabio enjoys this variety in the role. He shared his key tip which is a JEM. In this episode of The Italian American Podcast, we speak with four-time Super Bowl champion Franco Harris. Harris began his professional football career when the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the first round of the 1972 National Football League Draft—the 13th player chosen overall. In his first NFL season, he became only the fourth rookie in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards or more. But what most fans remember even more than his stats was his roof-raising catch in the famous "Immaculate Reception" pass from quarterback Terry Bradshaw that gave the Steelers a 13-7 over the Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh its first-ever playoff victory. Harris was named the league's Rookie of the Year by both The Sporting News and United Press International. Steelers fans, and especially its large fan base of Italian Americans, adored him. His most loyal fans dubbed themselves "Franco's Italian Army" and wore army helmets with his number on them. Even Frank Sinatra joined Franco’s Italian Army. He rushed for 1,000 yards or more eight seasons and totaled 47 100-yards-or-more games. At the time of his retirement, his career totals in rushing and combined net yardage of 14,622 ranked third highest in professional football history. Harris earned All-AFC honors in 1972, 1975, 1976 and 1977; and All-Pro six times. He was named to nine Pro Bowls; and played in five AFC championships and four Super Bowls. In Super Bowl IX, when the Steelers won their first-ever league title, Harris rushed for 158 yards and was named the game's Most Valuable Player. In 1990, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Born in Fort Dix, N.J., Harris graduated from Penn State in hotel and hospitality and food. After retiring from the NFL, with Penn State teammate and NFL great Lydell Mitchell, he founded Super Bakery to produce nutrition-oriented foods for schools, hospitals, and other food-service customers. Best known for marketing a nutritious Super Donut, in 2006 Harris launched RSuper Foods to distribute the Super Donut and other products across the country.
