Patreon.com/RememberTheGame Everyone around RTG Industries knows I love the NES, and the best games in the NES library are practically royalty around here. That exclusive list includes the Mario trilogy, both Contras, a ton of Mega Man, and of course, the legendary Mike Tyson's Punch-Out...  I have been trying to beat this game on and off for almost 35 years and still haven't reached the top of the mountain. For the longest time, Soda Popinski was my kryptonite. I couldn't beat him as a kid, and he just held court over me (is that a term?) every time I went up against him. I've finally slayed that demon, but the illusive Mike Tyson victory still evades me. For now, anyway. But that doesn't matter. Modern tough games make me crazy, but NES tough games are my torture of choice. I don't think I'll ever get tired of playing Punch-Out, and every couple years I fall into its clutches and spend a month or two swearing at little ref Mario. It's practically a perfect game and I'll tell you why on this episode. And before I get knocked out, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks where most of our listeners are located, so I share some stats. Is there a genre of game I discovered later in life and fell in love with? And what 5 Switch games would I recommend to a newcomer? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This was a short but action-packed episode, where we talked about the increasing intensity of childhood athletics, the economics of the player-agent model, and the impact of Name, Image, and Likeness, or NIL on College Baseball. Atlanta Braves pitcher Max Fried has emerged as a genuine candidate to win the 2024 Cy Young Award; Spencer Horwitz has firmly ascended to the majors; we're expecting Zach Hyman to step up if the Edmonton Oilers want to survive in the Stanley Cup Finals; and we offer congratulations to Yam Madar, an Israeli basketball player currently playing in Turkey, whose draft rights have been retained since 2020 by the Boston Celtics—who just won the NBA Finals. In the days when professional baseball was segregated into white and Black teams, a Black woman named Toni Stone made history. Stone was a sports phenom, and she rose through the ranks to become the first woman to play regularly in the Negro leagues, a series of men's professional baseball leagues. The teams attracted talented players including Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron. But Stone proved to be of the same caliber — when Aaron was picked up by Major League Milwaukee Braves, Stone took his position at second base with the all-male Indianapolis Clowns in 1953.“I had not heard of Toni Stone, and I was shocked and dismayed and then really not surprised at all, because that's what history does to black women,” said Lydia Diamond, author of the play, “Toni Stone.” “That's what history does to Black people. That's what history does to women of all colors. But then it angered me, and I felt like I had to take it on, and that it was my honor to take it on.”Until recently, Stone's remarkable story had been largely forgotten. Award-winning playwright, Lydia Diamond, takes on Stone's story in a new play featured at The Huntington Theatre.GUESTLydia Diamond, award-winning playwright whose works include “The Gift Horse,” “Smart People,” “Stick Fly” (Broadway) and “The Bluest Eye,” she is an associate professor of playwriting at the University of Illinois in Chicago, and her new play, “Toni Stone,” is running at the Huntington Theatre

Sports games are weird, because "old" sports games, like NHL '13 or Madden '14, are completely worthless today. But "older" sports games, like NHL '94, NBA Jam, and Tecmo Bowl, are timeless. Absolutely timeless. In twenty years, nobody will be playing this year's Madden game, but people will STILL be hosting Tecmo Bowl tournaments. THAT'S how good this damned game is.   I didn't play a lot of sports games as a kid, aside from hockey and wrestling, but I'm slowly making up for lost time in my old age. Tecmo Bowl happened to find it's way to the top of the list, and holy hell, I get it now. I get all of it. The tournaments. "No Bo". Why people still play these games over Madden. It's just, immaculate. So simple to learn, so fun to play. I'm mad at myself for not playing it sooner.    My buddy Brad DID play Tecmo Bowl as a kid, and we almost got through an entire episode without arguing with each other, because we both just agree that this game slaps, and it should have gotten an episode of RTG a long time ago. It's time to right that wrong.   And before we Bowl some Tecmo, I serve up another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'!   This week, I lay out my stance on reproduction cartridges of retro games. What do I think of the situation with Vince McMahon right now? And do I have any interest in attending E3 in person anymore?   PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring 3 NES sports classics: Baseball Stars, Tecmo Super Bowl and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!   Are you on social media? Our hosts each give updates on their main games from the first episode and then each choose one other game to discuss. Blake discusses the now defunct TCG Star Wars Destiny and how he has purchased product for a discount and built more thematic decks to enjoy the game and the game setting casually with friends. Dan discusses a platform puzzler by the name of Inside that he was impressed by the art of the game. That's right he appreciated art, you know it must be beautiful for him to even notice. After this discussion the hosts combine forces to discuss a new game whose Kickstarter has just completed, Solforge Fusion. Our hosts are actively creating weekly content on Blake's YouTube channel for this game and recording a game or two per video of us playing with the latest iteration as the game is still undergoing final tweaks and balances. Lastly Dan brings up a game from his distant past for the Games that Made us section and discusses SNK's Baseball Stars for the NES. San Diego has built a contender out of big contracts, star power, and one of the most charismatic young players in baseball -- offering a stark contrast to how another mid-sized market runs their roster, or did. For the Padres, it better work, and soon. As the St. Louis Cardinals visit San Diego for the first time since losing a playoff series, the Padres' roster has been diluted by several positive COVID-19 tests and as many as five regulars will miss the three-game series at Petco Park. A full-strength rematch will have to wait. But depth will be on display. San Diego Union-Tribune baseball writer Kevin Acee joins the Best Podcast in Baseball to discuss with St. Louis Post-Dispatch baseball writer Derrick Goold the Padres, their big-spending ways, their big moves, and whether they're big enough to overcome the behemoth of the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers. The guys hash out how they originally met and the landscape around the studio when they first got started in radio. Then, they discuss the powerful interview in Episode 42 with Steven Elliott author of War Story and the challenges our American heroes face when returning from duty. The guys chat about the front row fiascos involving Beyoncé and Nicole Curran & Kyle Lowry & Mark Stevens during the NBA Finals. Then, Mitch is joined by Mariners draftee Austin Shenton, Phil Barber from The Press Democrat in the Bay Area, and MLB 1st rounder from Lakeside HS Corbin Carroll. Finally, Mitch makes his U.S. Open pick and the guys close out by recalling some of the notable (and mostly uncomfortable) moments during the early days of the radio show! GUESTS Austin Shenton | Mariners 5th round draft pick & Bellingham native Phil Barber | Sports columnist for The Press Democrat (Santa Rosa) Corbin Carroll | D'Backs 1st round pick from Lakeside High School TABLE OF CONTENTS 0:04 | Wait a sec, you're not J-Ham, but you look very familiar sitting over there in the co-host chair for Episode 43! 14:35 | Reaction to the interview with Steven Elliott in Episode 42 which describes the battle many soldiers face when returning home from battle. 31:03 | Reminders to get in your picks for the Unfiltered Majors Challenge & to sign up for the Evening at Daniel's Broiler this Wednesday at www.mitchunfiltered.com! 33:03 | An exchange with a polite (and funny!) older gentlemen at The Issaquah Café got Mitch thinking about the massive shift in the way people communicate in modern society. 37:34 | Naming of the show (whether you like it or not!)   40:17 | Beyoncé dishes out a mean stink-eye to Warriors owner's wife Nicole Curran and it was all caught on camera. 44:51 | Warriors minority owner Mark Stevens can't keep his hands to himself when Kyle Lowry crashes into the first row and pays the piper for it. 54:14 | New Mariner Austin Shenton shares his inspiring story from humble roots in Bellingham to playing college ball in Florida then drafted by his favorite team as a kid. 1:16:20 | Longtime columnist for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat Phil Barber weighs in on the push by Mark Stevens on Kyle Lowry. Was the punishment dealt by the league appropriate? 1:39:44 | MLB 1st round pick for the Arizona Diamondbacks from Lakeside High School Corbin Carroll talks about his baseball journey thus far and what lies ahead in his quest to the big leagues. 1:55:48 | Who does Mitch select to win the U.S. Open which begins this Thursday at Pebble Beach?  1:57:33 | Mitch tells a classic story back in the early radio days about the angriest he ever saw Mike Gastineau. 2:04:13 | Hot Shot Scott just had to bring up the "Sean McDonough" incident which ranks high on the all-time awkward list. 2:10:58 | The guys recall an interview many years ago with Robert Shapiro that had a lasting impact and made Mitch's Father proud. 2:13:14 | Scott shares a story about the horrendous interview he had with Leigh Steinberg which clearly demonstrated the agent's lack of broadcasting acumen.

LIVE SPORT CHAT:Teen Athletes & the Abuse of Over-the-Counter Drugs From baseball stars to Olympians, media coverage of elite athletes increasingly includes reports of the use of performance-enhancing drugs to gain an edge over competitors. These substances are usually taken to boost athletic performance, increase muscle mass and strength, and diminish fatigue. Teen athletes in high school and even middle school are taking these drugs, too. There are many reasons for this, such as frustration over being at a plateau in training or curiosity about the drugs' effects. Some young athletes also may use performance-enhancing drugs if they think that others (especially competitors) are using them - and if they believe that coaches and parents will look the other way regarding the use of such products. Creatine - Creatine is a compound that helps muscles use energy and recover more quickly following exercise. Steroid precursors - Steroid precursors are substances that the body converts into anabolic steroids,Ephedra - Ephedra, also called ma huang, is a plant that contains two amphetamine-like stimulants: ephedrine and pseudoephedrine. The concern about ephedra products was so great that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned ephedra from being sold in dietary supplements in 2004. The scope of the FDA rule, though, does not pertain to traditional Chinese herbal remedies, so ma huang tea or other herbal products that contain ephedra can still be purchased. Some cold products also contain ephedrine or pseudoephedrine.
