Last week, the MBTA board of directors voted in favor of offering a reduced-fare program for low-income adults across the transit system, including for The Ride -- the MBTA's paratransit service. It's a huge victory for advocates who have been pushing for such a program for more than a decade. Today, Boston Globe Transportation Reporter Taylor Dolven joins The Common for a transit news round-up. First, a look at what it will take to make a low-income fare program a reality. Then, Taylor tells us about the MBTA's decision to pay an additional $148 million to a company notably behind on their contracted promise to make new Red and Orange Line train cars for the system. QP: The Ghost Train

Coffee with Cascade

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 1, 2023 1:30

Full-text: Metro's 2023 Regional Transportation Plan calls for expanding many different high-capacity transit lines but includes no mention of reducing the most costly ones. As of this spring, the WES commuter rail from Beaverton to Wilsonville only sees 450 daily boardings. That is only 225 riders, assuming a round trip. To put that in perspective, the least popular of the five MAX rail lines, the Orange Line, has more than 5,000 daily boardings. Meanwhile, the Blue Line has almost 30,000. Metro intended WES to be a huge success, predicting between 3,000 to 4,000 daily riders by 2020. At the height of its ridership, WES barely exceeded 2,000 daily boardings and, right before the pandemic, consistently saw fewer than 1,500. This ghost train is not just a waste of space, but a huge waste of money. Each ride costs taxpayers $103. Multiplied by the daily boardings, WES costs taxpayers more than $46,000 every day it runs. Eliminating this line would cost money in the near term, but getting rid of a consistent financial drain would save taxpayers millions in the long run. Before expanding public transit, Metro should eradicate underperforming train lines first. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coffeewithcascade/message

Boston Herald Transportation Reporter Gayla Cawley broke an exclusive story which revealed rising defects in the Commonwealth's brand new MBTA Orange and Red Line vehicles and a lack of proper action from the MBTA's Chinese contractor to fix them. Paperwork obtained by the Herald shows the Chinese rail company CRRC did not resolve identified defects brought forth by the MBTA but rather “force-closed” some quality item reports. The documents also showed that in January 2022, CRRC only delivered nine of the promised 34 two-car Orange Line train sets, reused safety-critical hardware, and submitted “approval to proceed” forms to bypass inspections.
