We've been waiting for this episode, a 1947 RKO noir double bill with two of the all-time greats, Jacques Tourneur's Out of the Past, in which Robert Mitchum's cool detective and Jane Greer's psychopathic moll work at cross purposes in their attempts to escape their shady pasts so that they can be free to love, and Robert Wise's Born to Kill, in which Claire Trevor's morally flexible social climber and Lawrence Tierney's paranoid psychopath just work at cross purposes. Elise agrees with Bosley Crowther that Born to Kill, one of her Top 10 favourite movies, "is not only morally disgusting but is an offense to a normal intellect," but will Dave be able to convince her that Out of the Past is "flawless"?    Time Codes: 0h 00m 30s:      BORN TO KILL [dir. In 1947 RKO studios made a surprise classic with OUT OF THE PAST, directed by journeyman Jacques Tourneur and starring Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas and Jane Greer near the start of their careers.  For film noir fans, this movie's reputation has never stopped growing since.  Combining snappy dialogue, a double-crossing femme fatale and an unusual flashback structure, this sexy and suspenseful movie heats up fast and never takes its foot off the gas. But does this film still burn as hot for young audiences, with actors they may have never heard of and a censorship code that, no matter how far the filmmakers pushed it, leaves a lot more to the imagination than we're used to today?   Find out on this episode of Film Generations. Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

My top noirs are Double Indemnity and Out Of The Past, in that order, but Falcon is special. Right out of the hard-boiled school of writing, the character of the unstoppable but human private detective as a noir mainstay, one of the more fatale of the femmes in the genre, the moody lighting and framing, the inevitability of the conclusion of a twisted scheme. Hey, all it lacks is a voice-over and flashbacks! Oh well. Falcon launched from one-time Pinkerton agent Dash Hammett's typewriter in 1930. Run as a serial in the classic Black Mask pulp magazine, it was later published as a detective novel by Knopf. Hammett was often a denizen of San Francisco, setting the novel there and taking his given first name, Sam, for the name of his protagonist, Sam Spade. Hammett is often contrasted with a hard-boiled, slightly later contemporary, Raymond Chandler, whose own detective Phillip Marlowe was set irrevocably in LA. Chandler was more of a florid descriptor of the LA scene, while Hammett's prose was exceedingly spare, with little of the setting of San Fran or deep details of the background of the story revealed. However, this made Hammett's work perfect for a screenplay. Website and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

Following up on our great Brian De Palma episode with Megan Abbott & Alison Gaylin that was released last week, we have our second of three installments this month featuring two tremendous guests. Centered on one of our greatest film stars in the form of Robert Mitchum, you'll hear two different conversations with two brilliant women, recorded over the course of the summer to clock in at a combined total of two hours. If anyone deserves that much time & attention, it's Robert Mitchum!First up, we have blogger & historian Raquel Stecher, who joins me to cover some of the actor's most famous performances in the films OUT OF THE PAST, BLOOD ON THE MOON, RIVER OF NO RETURN, THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, & THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE. After that, actress-turned-producer Amy Robinson returns to share her thoughts on the man whose six-decade-spanning career she did a deep dive into during the pandemic. In addition to a general appreciation of what Robert Mitchum brought to film history, she chose to tackle one of his most unexpected & fascinating collaborations with his good friend Deborah Kerr, with whom he starred in the films HEAVEN KNOWS MR. ALLISON, THE SUNDOWNERS, THE GRASS IS GREENER, & REUNION AT FAIRBOROUGH. A wide-ranging conversation that touches on several other memorable films, stars, & directors, you'll want to be sure to listen to this one with a notebook & pen in order to write down all of the titles we work into these two terrific chats. Jacques Tourneur's 1947 film noir, OUT OF THE PAST, is up for discussion this week. We talk about the early screen performances by Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas, RKO Pictures, whether Film Noir is a style or genre, and much more. We'll also give our top 7 best neo noir films in our Silver Screen 7 and hand out our 5 awards to Out of the Past in our Nerd Out.

Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

Out Of The Past has the coolest, most laconic, world-weary noir character ever portrayed, the standard for the type. You can't take your eyes off him. And America never did. He's the prototype for the anti-heroes to follow, but was never equaled: Robert Mitchum. And he wraps this film up in his hand, puts it in his trench coat pocket, and makes me want to watch it over and over. It's got all the elements of a great noir, of course, but the star of stars in this is Mitchum. He makes the film. And he's got to drag the attention away from a basketful of talent to do it. email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

Oh, I've been waiting for this. I've seen this movie many times, but it's like an old familiar friend that you always have time for and is so enjoyable to visit. I've said on Twitter that if you've seen Double Indemnity and Out Of The Past, you're a long way down the road to appreciation of film noir. Is Double Indemnity the first film noir? There're a lot of other films that a purist would claim were forerunners, certainly 1941's The Maltese Falcon, which is just as atmospheric. Earlier than that, you could point to Fritz Lang's German Expressionist M or Private Detective 62, which are more like proto-noir. But in 1944's Double Indemnity by Paramount Pictures, you have it all in one beautiful, desperate hour and 47 minutes of film. email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

This one is longer, so you don't have to do the same this week, but feel free!  TLDR: Loved it)   -I'm still processing, but this was maybe my favorite episode in years.  It mixed everything good about the older, mission-oriented episodes of Shield with all the threats and tools that have been piling up in the last few seasons.    -I like that they brought Souza in as an obstacle at first, but it'll be fun to hopefully have him allied with the team in later episodes.  The line "She couldn't stay with Rick; she had to go with Victor" really gave me vibes of what I'm sure Souza experienced when Cap showed up to get Peggy back - in whatever timeline that would've happened in.  I do like that he was on to Hydra infiltrating Shield all the way back here in '55, although I wonder if that means he was one of the Winter Soldier's earliest victims offscreen.    -Simmons getting her Agent Carter on was fun, and it makes sense that in this age where word of mouth was bigger than anything else, she would be able to get away with it until running into someone who actually knew Peggy.  She gets less and less robotic in every episode since the season 6 finale, but then again, Coulson isn't exactly robotic either, so I'm still Team-LMD-Fitzsimmons.   -Other things I enjoyed:        -Simmons finding out where in time they are with the radio.  Seems like something I would have done.        -the deeper look into the past's white supremacy and the line "stupid white privilege"        -the continued storyline of Daisy getting opportunities to destroy the organization that turned both her parents into monsters        -the aftereffects of season 6 on May and Yoyo        -the idea that EMPs are the best weapon against chronicoms (sidenote: AIDA had EMP-proof batteries even before Radcliffe got ahold of the Darkhold.  Why are the Chronicoms not as smart as Radcliffe?????)   All in all, it was a great and fun episode, and exactly the kind of content I wanted from this season.  Can't wait to see where the Coulson cliffhanger leads and how they get him back from Shield before that ripple turns into a wave.    Until next time, true believers.  Excelsior!   OUTRO [49:52]   Haley, Lauren, Michelle and Stargate Pioneer love to hear back from you about how you would rate the episode we just discussed, your top 5 Marvel character lists, your science of Marvel questions, who would you pick in an all-female Avenger team, or which Marvel male you would like to see shirtless.

Titus & Terry Teachout turn to Out Of The Past, Bob Mitchum's best noir, his defining role as a chump, & a great variation on the femme fatale & the corrupted noble man. This is a rare story for juxtaposing the morality of the small town & the corruption of the city, the erotic lawlessness South of the border with the disheartening unhappiness of American life, & then showing how erotic tragedy grows out of this opposition between innocence & experience. The corruption of glamour is the them, & it's all-American.

Filmstruck (2016 - 2018) was something more than just a streaming service. It was on demand film curation for the film lover. It was the perfect blend of art, history, and culture. FilmStruck was a rare gem that provided film personally curated to fulfill all three of these. The cinematic landscape is changing and it will always be imperative to give a platform to films like this that have no other home. So Aaron and Brad mourn the loss of Filmstruck by digging deep into how it got here and taking one last dive into the films it provided from the pioneering science fiction of THINGS TO COME, the acidic western of THE SHOOTING, the noir classic of OUT OF THE PAST, the booze-filled holiday of WITHNAIL AND I, and more!

The co-managing editor of the FNF's NOIR CITY e-magazine joins us to discuss some of his wide-ranging articles from the past few years. We start with how Steve started writing for the FNF alongside his brother Michael after many years of working together on the classic horror magazine Monsters From The Vault (1:30), and we take a look at noir-themed lyrics in songs from the 1950s-70s era of classic rock (8:20). We discuss the career of one of noir's most accomplished cinematographers, Nicholas Musuraca, best known for Out Of The Past. We start with his early years as one of the founding craftsmen of RKO, groundbreaking expressionism in Stranger On The Third Floor, darkness and light in Val Lewton-produced classics including Cat People and The Seventh Victim, voyeurism in The Spiral Staircase, and panic and dread in The Hitchhiker (21:50). Then we delve into the wild history of EC Comics, whose horror-themed titles such as Tales From The Crypt led to industry-wide censorship under pressure from Congress in the mid-1950s. EC migrated their grisly tales into "adult-themed" magazines that paralleled 1950s noirs such as While The City Sleeps and Kiss Me Deadly, before ultimately shifting their focus to producing one of the most successful humor magazines of all time! OUT OF THE PAST is perhaps the most carefully structured of all films noir--a narrative divided (like protagonist Jeff Markum/Bailey) between an inescapable past and an impossible future, teetering on the slimmest hope for the present such that any action taken by its poor players tips them down into the abyss. Director Jacques Tourneur, cinematographer Nicholas Musuraca and screenwriter Daniel Mainwaring perfectly synchronized their efforts on this film, creating a narrative masterpiece where every image perfectly accompanies or contrasts every line of dialogue, where the whole is so self-conscious that it forces us to view each moment through every other, creating a true mise-en- abyme. It would be as impossible for the viewer to enter into such a story as it is for the characters to escape it, if it weren't for the decision to create a "Meta" narration at exactly the halfway point of the film, allowing the viewer to sort past from present in a film that constantly blurs that distinction in order to show how lives are always lived in servitude to what comes out of the past. For all of these reasons, the film is a constant source of inspiration, and a constant obsession, for those who watch it carefully. Artist and novelist Jonathan Santlofer joins Clute and Edwards to discuss how the film has repeatedly inspired his work, and Clute and Edwards consider how the case they would make for this movie is reframed each time they reopen their investigation into its means and motives.

This special episode of OUT OF THE PAST is full of holiday surprises. Clute and Edwards investigate the 2005 neo-noir Christmas comedy THE ICE HARVEST, then speak with Scott Phillips, author of the 2000 hardboiled novel on which the film is based. While the book contains its share of dark humor, it is largely a tale of the moral tipping point in the life of Witchita Mob lawyer Charlie Arglist (played by John Cusack), who discovers his capacity for ruthlessness when backed into a corner. The movie plays down the moral crisis and plays up the comedy, but director Harold Ramis manages to recreate some of the brooding atmosphere of the original story by staging a series of noir tribute shots. Phillips, and Clute and Edwards, all weigh in how successfully the film adapts the book in this double-feature holiday special. This inaugural episode features a roundtable discussion with the director, playwright, and lead actors of The Stolen Chair Theatre Company's off-Broadway play "Kill Me Like You Mean It." Inspired by film noir and the theatre of the absurd, the play is an artful mash-up that demonstrates how dark is the heart of absurdist theatre, and how absurd are the conventions of noir. This podcast--part interview, part radio drama--should please fans of film noir and mystery fiction alike.
