In this mix, I give my respectful nod to Stomu Yamashta and my tribute to the wonderful voice we have lost, Linda Lewis from the last of the Go Sessions, In the last album of the trilogy, a stroke of genius was made by Stomu Yamashta, the decision to bring in Linda Lewis for the lead female voice. Later this year I will produce another mix where I will dig deeper into the Go series of albums. Click Vortex comes to a close for 2022 with a real roaster of the Kenny Rogers variety. This episode finds Jason tracing the journey of NYC punk guitarist Robert Quine, from the underground to the power pop mainstream, with digressions into the work Matthew Sweet, Lloyd Cole, string arranger Paul Buckmaster, Kelly Clarkson (!) and Mike Watt. Then Sam spins the dial on the ole satellite radio and uncovers the saga of Dodie Stevens, who scored a hit with "Pink Shoelaces" just shy of her 13th birthday and went on to record an answer song to "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town": "Billy, I've Got To Go To Town." And that's where Kenny comes in...Got a story to share with us? A strange story to confess? Anything else you want to share with the WASTOIDS crew? Just dial 1-877-WASTOIDS and leave a message.
On this week's episode, we discuss Elton John's third, 1970's Tumbleweed Connection. Elton John's second LP was a lushly orchestrated affair that launched Elton John's career into the stratosphere, largely due to the single "Your Song", which was a top ten single all over the world. Not wanting to be pigeonholed, Elton John, chose to make an album that was more stripped down. There are elements of gospel, folk country, and even funk. Long time Elton John collaborator Paul Buckmaster's string arrangment are present, but they are more subdued and rawer. The sound of Tumbleweed Connection couldn't be more different than the album before it. However, the thing that makes this album truly unique is the subject matter. The lyrics, by Elton John's songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, were influenced by both the westerns Taupin watched as a child, and the music of the Band. The songs center mostly on an idealized and romanticized version of post-Civil War America and the American West, one inhabited by cowboys, civil war vets, and gunslingers, but also one that focused on the simpler things in life. Tumbleweed Connection gives us a version of America filtered through the eyes of two young Englishmen that is at once charming, beautiful, and poignant.
We look at Elton John's “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” (1973) one of the most important and influential albums of the modern rock period. An album with serious lyrics, tight ensemble playing from the band, and cover art as good as it gets, this album marks a high point for Elton John. In his career of over 50 years, he may have matched, but never bettered, this album. We also look at the 80's, which get a bit of a bum rap from many people for “manufactured bands and music”. This is perhaps unfair, with a lot of great music, Live Aid, the Berlin Wall coming down and the arty New Romantic style following a direct line from punk right at the start of the decade! Spandau Ballet, along with ABC, Visage, Duran Duran, A Flock of Seagulls, Boy George / Culture Club were at the vanguard of a style that owed a lot to the simplification and availability of keyboards/synthesisers. Simple songs, no virtuoso playing but heaps of fun. From the burbling keyboards of “To Cut a Long Story Short” through to the blue-eyed soul of “True” and “Gold”, they provided a glamorous soundtrack for a new decade that still stands up today. Everybody knows Cyndi Lauper's big hit, “Girls Just want to have Fun”, but not so well-known is her career since then - a star-turn on “We are the World”, a string of great albums including Billboard's Blues Album of the Year, and writing “Kinky Boots”, a hit Broadway musical, all contribute to her story. Our album "To Listen To Before You Die" this week – Leonard Cohen's “Songs of Love and Hate” - is chock-full of understated songs and amazing turns of phrase. Show regulars will know that Mick loves it, and Jeff not so much. Tune in to find out why. Currently part of the incredible Woman To Woman project with Beverley Craven, Julia Fordham and Rumer , Judie Tzuke is not only one of the finest writers the UK has ever produced but also has one of the most distinctive voices full of warmth and believability. Here she talks about her beginnings writing poems which turned into songs forming the basis of her albums initially signed to Elton John's label with whom she toured with - yes that famous US show where he dressed as Donald Duck. Her seminal classic "Stay With Me Til Dawn" sounds as beautiful today as it ever did with its signature string arrangement by legend Paul Buckmaster. I have been lucky enough to write with her on songs I count to be my very best including "If (When You Go)" (recorded both by herself and with Beverley and Julia for the project) which has the loveliest story behind it and "Maybe This Christmas" with the truly breathtaking Harriet as well as writing classics with Lucie Silvas, Tom Baxter, Morcheeba and BT . She also talks about her battle with stage fright and how losing her voice on a show became the remedy for it as well as how surviving cancer and Covid have made her more fearless than ever. I've said it before, she's an angel, like a real life one. She's changed so many peoples lives, is always helping and nurturing new talent and continues to be one of my favourite writers and humans. I absolutely adore her and know you will too after listening to this. In honor of our tenth episode we finally dug out the Rocky theme, it was only a matter of time. It seemed the only fitting way to close out a short audio piece recorded at a rally in support of the PA Film Tax Credit held on the steps at the Art Museum on June 3, 2017. Featured soundtracks of films shot in Philly include Peter Gabriel's score for Birdy, Paul Buckmaster's theme for Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys and James Newtown Howard's score for M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable. We also devote a set of music to Sofia Coppola who just became only the 2nd women to be named Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. Hear music from her first short film Lick the Star, Lost in Translation, Somewhere, Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette.
London and Yorkshire raised this honourable musician evolved from early classical piano and drum lessons with the notorious Fanny Waterman and Jimmy Blades on to Jazz, Blues and Rock & Roll upon hearing John Coltrane, The Beatles, Cream and John Mayall and then guided by John Taverner who "taught" him to improvise by duetting on a full size/3 console church organ. The early 70's manifested his first band, Global Village Trucking Company which led to non-stop touring establishing them as one of the most sought after UK acts with their lifestyle documented by the BBC on ‘By Way of a Change'. As a session keyboardist he recorded and toured with the likes of Frank Zappa, Joan Armatrading, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Annette Peacock, Snowy White, Shusha, Paul Buckmaster and L. Shankar whilst also fronting his own bands. Joining a pool of Caribbean, Japanese and European musicians saw 80's virtuosic jazz/funk outfit The Breakfast Band formed with further tours and albums that gained fans in Japan and spawned club hits in London. A sabbatical from gigging had him drive his family on an 8 month trip in a converted Mercedes motor home to Israel, Egypt, Morocco and Europe absorbing music, culture and instruments inspiring him to document and record Tribal music from around the world. Settling in New Mexico he released traditional Native American songs on his own label, Tribal Music International and soon became Albuquerque University resident DJ with his own show, Global Tribal Music exploring links and origins of instruments and tribes. Based back in the UK, we welcome this global music maker.
Unenforceable Mandates. It's always difficult to know where we are even when our own government is watching and listening to us. Our lives are more complex and that makes us more vulnerable. Complexity makes us weaker. Simplicity makes us stronger. Politicians know how to be complex by confusing the American people. They say they're working for us. But you can't over reach if you have power. You can't mandate something you can't enforce and that's when people start saying "The emperor has no cloths". Things start getting dangerous when GROUP/THINK can't get what they want. MUSIC Hans Zimmer, Tyler Bates, Paul Buckmaster

Enormous thanks to John Higgins - Feature Writer for the eltonjohn.com website - who came onto the podcast to share his love for the 'Black Album', and to tell me some of the stories that he'd been able to hear during interviews that he carried out with Paul Buckmaster and Gus Dudgeon about their work on the project. We listened through some 'mixes' that I've made of the tracks, making use of the separate channels in the 5.1 mixes, which I feel make for a pleasing new outlook onto some of Elton's densest material. Apologies to anyone who's been waiting on an episode, or a reply from me. There are several excuses in the episode, I won't repeat them here. Part two of this interview will be up very soon!

Trading the cinematic aspirations of Tumbleweed Connection for a tentative stab at prog rock, Elton John and Bernie Taupin delivered another excellent collection of songs with Madman Across the Water. Like its two predecessors, Madman Across the Water is driven by the sweeping string arrangements of Paul Buckmaster, who gives the songs here a richly dark and haunting edge. -AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

This episode takes you back to the 2nd of November 1969, to a Miles Davis gig, at Ronnie Scott's jazz club, where Elton met a 23 year old Paul Buckmaster for the first time. How did Buckmaster get to be the guest of Miles Davis that night? What was the musical background of this graduate of the Royal Academy of Music? This episode is a musical journey through Buckmaster's early arrangements and his earliest 'cello performances on vinyl.
Let it bleed. Can't You Hear Me Knocking".

The interesting tale of "Landed" - the smash hit that never was and the big-budget Paul Buckmaster string arrangement.
