This week a slight departure as we go back forty years to the alternative comedy landscape of the 1980s and Tyler chats with Rowland Rivron, that difficult-to-define Swiss army knife of a man who has done a bit of pretty much everything: musician, comedian, actor, writer, voice-over artiste, panel game captain, television presenter, dancer and at least a dozen other things.  Rowland was partly responsible for one of the funniest hours of British television: The Comic Strip Presents Mr Jolly Lives Next Door, starring Rik Mayall & Adrian Edmondson. Tyler was keen to discuss this in particular with him in a conversation which also covered: Interviewing Spike Milligan Sharing a flat with Rik MayallRaw Sex and The Idiot Bastard Band Money for old rope voiceover workInterviewing Tony Blackburn in the middle of the ThamesThe Groovy Fellers and Set of SixWorking with French & SaundersWinning Let's Dance For Sport Relief doing Weapon Of ChoiceGetting drunk with Kevin McNallyShooting Stars & Jack and Jeremy's Real LivesCaravanning around Europe … And a whole lot more!

In this episode, Danny Hurst is joined by Ronnie Golden, aka Tony De Meur, of the post-punk pub rock band The Fabulous Poodles. They had several hits and appeared regularly on TV and radio. The Fabulous Poodles supported many bands including The Ramones and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Later, Ronnie transitioned into stand-up, comedy, acting and song-writing. He worked with Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders and was in The Young Ones, The Fourth Protocol and more. Later, he collaborated with comedy legends such as Arthur Smith, Rich Hall and, until his death, Barry Cryer, with whom he performed regularly as a double-act. Ronnie shares some fascinating stories about his career, the people he has worked with and his influences. He also explains how he learned maths through music and how the Comedy Store and The Comic Strip Presents… changed British comedy. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Despite writing a lot of music Ronnie, like many other musicians, cannot read music. Ronnie learned maths through music, he explains how during the episode. Never turn down the chance to do something new. Repeatedly, Ronnie took on projects despite not having 100% of the skills required. He simply learned what he needed to know. All performers have bad days, including Bob Dylan. Ronnie shares what it was like to see Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, John Lee Hooker, Jimi Hendrix and more perform in small London venues. A lot of the comedy of the 80s came out of people being sick of the Tories. In the 60s, going up west and to Denmark Street was a buzz. Today, London has become so corporate that it has lost much of its character. BEST MOMENTS “From doing comedy songs, I developed repartee, and it became a mix of stand-up and music.” “I recognised the mathematics in music, and I connected with it. 12 bar blues and that kind of stuff.” “I bought myself a harmonica, and I didn't take it out of my mouth for about a week until I learned it.” “You´ve got to trust yourself.” “That´s the way Dylan works – he likes to surprise himself.” “In the 60s, it was a complete buzz.” “I see less of places that I used to love going to and everything’s changed.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://x.com/ronniegolden1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Golden HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Having worked with some of the most difficult people in the UK, he is a natural storyteller and entertainer, whilst purveying the most fascinating information that you didn't know you didn't know. A writer and host of pub quizzes across London, he has travelled extensively and speaks several languages. He has been a consultant for exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum and Natural History Museum in London as well as presenting accelerated learning seminars across the UK. With a wide range of knowledge ranging from motor mechanics to opera to breeding carnivorous plants, he believes learning is the most effective when it's fun. Uniquely delivered, this is history without the boring bits, told the way only Danny Hurst can. The cast largely came from the developing alternative comedy scene, and included Rik Mayall and Alexei Sayle. Adrian was born in Bradford in 1957. He spent time as a child in Cyprus, Bahrain and Uganda, following his father who worked as a teacher for the armed forces. He attended a boarding school in Yorkshire from the age of 11, where he often rebelled against its rules and restrictions, but enjoyed performing in school plays. He headed to Manchester University to study drama, where he soon met Rik Mayall. They bonded over their shared interests in comedy, double acts, violent slapstick and the plays of Samuel Beckett. It feels like only yesterday we were getting stuck into some Porridge and now Series 2 of BritCom Goes to the Movies, draws to a close with 2004's Churchill: The Hollywood Years. A movie that was met with a lukewarm critical reception and a limited release, leaving it with a somewhat tarnished at worst, and forgettable at best legacy.   ...but is any of that fair? Both Rob and Guy remembered loving it. The film had the cream of TV comedy talent of the time and all masterminded by Mr. Comic Strip Presents Peter Richardson, with a blueprint similar to one of his best episodes, The Strike. Is it really as bad as all that? There's a deep dive into The Comic Strip from its early days as a cabaret show, to a mockumentary directed by Julian Temple, to the opening night of Channel 4. This show gave the world Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, French and Saunders, Robbie Coltraine, Keith Allen, Alexi Sayle, Phil Cornwell...the list goes on! There's the small matter of crowning the series quiz champion, with Rob needing an absolute miracle to defend his title. What a series it's been, with two new number ones, could we have a third? Everybody knows Cyndi Lauper's big hit, “Girls Just want to have Fun”, but not so well-known is her career since then - a star-turn on “We are the World”, a string of great albums including Billboard's Blues Album of the Year, and writing “Kinky Boots”, a hit Broadway musical, all contribute to her story.   Our album "To Listen To Before You Die" this week – Leonard Cohen's “Songs of Love and Hate” - is chock-full of understated songs and amazing turns of phrase. Show regulars will know that Mick loves it, and Jeff not so much.  Tune in to find out why. Jeff takes a look at Extreme Ironing as an up-and-coming sport, and the boys look at how one of Elon Musk's batteries could boost tourism to Central Australia by allowing a pizza shop and ice-creamery to open in the country's most remote parts.    References:  “1001 Albums You Must Hear before You Die” Robert Dimery, Leonard Cohen, Songs of Love and Hate, Jennifer Warnes, Paul Buckmaster, Elton John, “Hallelujah”, ”Famous Blue Raincoat”, Lloyd Cole, “Avalanche”, Nick Cave, “From Her to Eternity”, “There's a crack in everything / That's how the light gets in”, “The Young Ones”, 70's British comedy, Rick Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Nigel Planer, Polydor Records, Portrait Records, David Thornton, Patti Smith, Debbie Harry, Eurythmics, Annie Lennox, Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, Sinead O'Connor, Prince, Masturbation, Donny Sutherland's “Sounds”, “She's So Unusual”, The Hooters, Eric Bazilian, ”We are the World”, Quincy Jones, Memphis Blues, Yoko Ono, John Lennon, “Working Class Hero”, “Life with Mikey”, “Mad About You”, The Simpsons, "Wild Barts Can't Be Broken", “Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir” By Cyndi Lauper with Jancee Dunn, Richmond Hill High School in Queens, Broadway, “Kinky Boots”, 2013 Tony Awards, Best Musical, Best Actor, first woman to win solo Best Original Score Tony Award, Mattel, Cyndi Lauper Barbie Doll Extreme Ironing Around the World Extreme Ironing Skysurf Playlist

Adrian Edmondson on the pursuit of laughter

In this essay Adrian Edmondson describes his pursuit of a certain type of laugh, a desperate, untamed, visceral laugh, and in doing so remembers one of the acts from those early days of the Comedy Store. It is one of the funniest things he has ever seen and led to his understanding of what comedy could be. He recalls how the performer played with the audience and their expectations to riotous, hysterical, effect. Except he cannot remember their name. No, really, he can't. For those who know Adrian Edmondson's work with his former comedy partner Rik Mayall, it won't come as a surprise that as a child he was delighted by The Goons and by rude words in comic songs. He went on to study drama at Manchester University. The influence of the absurdist dramatists he studied, and the Muppets and the Pythons, are all reflected in his comedy practice. He and Rik were part of the first wave of Alternative Comedy that changed the comedic landscape for ever. He starred as Vyvyan in The Young Ones, the series that blasted its way onto our screens, tearing into our preconceptions of what television comedy could be. He co-created and wrote the television series Bottom with Rik, which ran for three very successful series, toured as a stage show and was the basis for a spin-off film. Adrian Edmondson is now equally well known as an accomplished straight actor (in the RSC, BBC TV's War and Peace, Eastenders), and a writer of books for adults and children. “No-one knows what to call me. Even me. People say ‘Do we call you Ade or Adrian?' And I usually say, ‘Whatever you can manage'”. At various stages in his life, Adrian Edmondson has attempted to change his name. He ponders his family history and how he came to be called Adrian. He was ribbed at school for having what was thought of as a girl's name. Across this set of essays Adrian Edmondson considers moments of personal and social change. Not quite ready to commit to an autobiography he says, “there is an autobiographical urge somewhere inside me.” His career has taken him from 20th Century Coyote (punk meets comedy) to The Young Ones to Malvolio at the RSC via Eddie Hitler in Bottom. Adrian Edmondson studied drama at Manchester University where he met his comedy partner Rik Mayall. The influence of the absurdist dramatists he studied and his early love for The Goons, The Muppets and Monty Python are all reflected in his comedy practice. He and Rik were part of the first wave of Alternative Comedy where their glorious pursuit of laughter and anarchic performances changed the comedic landscape for ever. He starred as Vyvyan in The Young Ones, the series that blasted its way onto our screens tearing into our preconceptions of what television comedy could be. Adrian has since had a very significant career indeed. A career that has taken him in later years into 'straight' acting as well, at the RSC, BBC TV's War and Peace and EastEnders, and as a writer of books for adults and children. He has also had an award winning music career with his band The Bad Shepherds which fused punk and folk.
