We I frist met Phil Long, I was tasting at the African American Association of Vintners and we just happen to stumble across the fact that we literally grew up around the corner from each other in Inglewood, California. Granted that was many years ago, and much has changed in society since those days, but we both ended up in the wine trade and found a mutual connection on both levels. Phil Long might be the only winemaker who can turn a tale about drafting homework into a master class on the thousand steps of wine. Pour a glass and get ready to uncover much more than the typical vineyard origin story—this episode offers a rare glimpse into the making of a modern winemaker. Listeners will discover how Phil's Southern California roots, his early career as a creative architect, and a fateful bottle of Boone's Farm all wove together into a relentless curiosity for wine that ultimately led him, step by step, into the heart of an industry both old and new. You'll learn what truly defines a winemaker—not the first three steps of fermentation, nor even the next 100, but the thousand intricate choices, failures, and stubborn bits of creativity that make a bottle personal. Phil peels back the mystique of wine, sharing both the obstacles and quirks—from launching Longevity Wines out of a garage to landing a partnership with the Franzia family and navigating the complicated terrain of distribution and branding. For those curious about the intersection of culture and wine, Phil opens up about building community as president of the Association of African American Vintners, showing that passion, persistence, and collaboration are the real keys to progress. You'll also come away with an insider's perspective on innovation and authenticity in a business shaped by shifting trends and timeless tradition—why a wine experience is more than a beverage, and how the memories, people, and places around the glass matter as much as what's in it. Whether you're wondering about non-alcoholic wine, the realities of vineyard margins, or simply want to know how someone goes from drafting tables to barrels, this conversation will change how you see every sip. ✅ Ever wondered how a winemaker turns a three-step garage project into an award-winning, internationally recognized label? ✅ Phil Long of Longevity Wines reveals the thousands of steps (and secrets) that define a true winemaker. ✅ Host Paul K sits down with Phil to talk about everything from humble beginnings in Inglewood, breaking barriers in the wine industry, and building a brand that's grounded in authenticity and family. ✅ If you think wine is just a drink, get ready to discover why it's truly an experience—and how perseverance and passion can shape an entire legacy.

Here's my full conversation with our awesome team member, Phil Long. Today I'm excited to sit down and talk with Phil Long, a great member of the Dave Hooke Team. We'll discuss why he joined the team, what he does, and what's in store for the future. Let's get started! So, Phil, how did you first become interested in joining the Dave Hooke Team? I joined the team in 2019, but I've known Dave for a long time. I knew from personal experience that he was a stand-up guy, and I knew his business focused on giving back to the community. Those values lined up with mine, so it seemed like a natural fit. You have a different role here than a real estate agent. Can you tell us a little bit about what you do? Dave and I formed a company together called Offer PA, and its goal is to give sellers more options than listing their homes on the open market. My job is to offer to buy sellers' homes in as-is condition for cash. For a seller who has a highly damaged property or needs to sell quickly, Offer PA could be exactly what they need. “There's always something new to learn, and there are always ways to make what we're doing more efficient.” As you've settled into the team, what's your favorite part? I love our morning positive focus meetings. We do them every morning, and people can talk about something as simple as what they had for dinner last night or something as fantastic as the birth of a new child. Either way, it's a great way to keep up positive energy and get everyone ready for the day. What would you say your biggest challenge is on a day-to-day basis? There's always something new to learn, and there are always ways to make what we're doing more efficient. However, it comes down to the little things we have to do every day because they are the foundation for everything else. Finally, what are you looking forward to in the next few years? I'm focused right now on building Offer PA and helping more homeowners. There's a lot going on in this market, so I want to give my best to people every day. I would like to thank Phil once again for joining me today. If you have any questions for Phil or about real estate in general, please call us at 717-216-0860 or email me at dave@davehooketeam.com.
Winemaker/Founder Phil Long of Longevity Wines is a true Garagiste – he began his making wine in the garage with his late wife Debra in the mid-2000s. In 2008, the couple quit their full-time jobs and the couple opened their tasting room and winery in the Livermore Valley near their home. Livermore Valley is a sub-AVA of the Central Coast with a really unique climate (I lived in Pleasanton, the next town over, so I speak from experience!) – with cool nights and some San Francisco Bay influence bumping up against the heat from the east of the Central Valley. The wines were sourced using local fruit and Longevity grew from a few hundred, to a few thousand cases. Map from the Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association Phil is revered for his balanced wines from Bordeaux and Rhone varietals. His wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Debruvee (the GSM Rhone Style blend), and Philosophy (Bordeaux style blend). In 2018, the Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association voted Longevity Winery of the Year. With their artfully designed labels (done by Phil as a tribute to Debra), Longevity's wines are also a darling of Hollywood, with bottles being featured on tv shows and in movies. Phil is the President of the Association of African American Vintners (AAAV) and has been a key player in the discussion around the lack of diversity in the wine industry. We discuss his role as the spokesperson for the organization and the importance of making changes to improve the wine industry as a whole. Phil is a down-to-earth, smart, and talented guy. Despite how big Longevity may be in the future with the Bronco partnership, I don't think that will ever change! __________________________________________________ Thanks to our sponsors: Thanks to YOU! On episode 12, Bryan welcomes Phil Long to discuss their favorite films from Pixar. The American-based animation studio began releasing films in 1995 with "Toy Story", which was a game-changer for how animated films are made today. They've produced 22 feature films thus far, as well as dozens of short films. The studio has earned 21 Academy Awards, a large amount of critical praise and a majority of the films have proven to be box office juggernauts. With films like "Monsters, Inc.", "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles", it was a challenge to choose just five films when we could've spent hours and hours talking about our top tens! It's not easy to believe the story of Jonah and the whale, is it? We must ask ourselves: does the Bible portray this and other stories as historical or does it portray them as fables? We had a great conversation with Phil Long about the historicity of biblical tales and about the discrepancy amongst scholars on the reliability of the Bible as a historical book. https://www.regent-college.edu/

Winemaker/Founder Phil Long of Longevity Wines, began his journey making wine in the garage with his wife Debora. Now with over a decade of winemaking experience, and a list of awards too long to print, Winemaker Phil continues his journey with the constant of always improving in place. "In the business of winemaking, the minute you think you know it all, it's time to get out." The cellar practices and techniques that Phil uses in the production of wine are constantly re-evaluated and improved, to ultimately elevate the quality of the wines produced. The grapes are personally sourced and chosen by Phil. "Great wine starts with great fruit, there is no way around that." Grapes are sourced from only the best vineyards for use in the production of Longevity Wines. Phil began making wine in the Livermore Valley in 2006 under the Longevity label, using other facilities. It was only a matter of time before production was moved from other facilities to Longevity's own facility in Livermore. Yearly production has grown from 500 cases per year, to the current production of 2500 cases per year. Phil enjoys the challenge of making many different wines, and continues to strive for wines that are high in quality instead of high quantities. The Psalms have given voice to the prayers and petitions of generations of Jews and Christians alike. They represent the deepest longings of kings and desperate men, the righteous and the penitent, all “seeking the face of God” (27:8 and 105:4). But they often seem formidable poetically, as finely wrought articulations expressions of both grief and piety, but also ethically, where lamentation turns into imprecation. What’s the best way to access the meaning and significance of the Psalms? How does a commentary function alongside our reading of the text itself? And how did the early Christian witnesses summon or evoke their images and motifs in their writings? Why did they insist on reading their Christology back into the Psalms? We touch on the answers to these questions and others in an hour-long conversation with Tremper Longman III about his new book, Psalms: An Introduction and Commentary (IVP Academic, 2014) in the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary series, published by IVP Academic. We talk about the peculiar enterprise of writing Biblical commentary, the challenge of writing about the Psalms in particular, and Longman’s own personal arc from meeting Billy Graham to learning Akkadian and studying Babylonian mythology and literature. Tremper Longman is the Robert H. Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies at Westmont College. Tremper has authored or co-authored more than 20 books, including commentaries on Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Daniel, Nahum, Proverbs, Jeremiah and Lamentations, and Job. His scholarship has ranged widely from the literary study of the Bible to history and historiography, most notably expressed in his two textbooks A Biblical History of Israel, with Iain Provan and Phil Long, and Introduction to the Old Testament, with Raymond B. Dillard. Professor Longman was one of the main translators of the popular New Living Translation and has served as a consultant on other popular translations of the Bible including the Message and the Holman Standard Bible. He earned a BA in Religion at Ohio Wesleyan University, an MDiv from Westminster Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in ancient Near Eastern studies from Yale University.
