So I can have a feed of the older stuff? What do you think? I swear I heard of someone doing this? Answer: 90% of shows globally deliver 90% of their lifetime download within the first 96 hours so it's really a matter are you truly getting significant downloads for that old catalog. It's very very rare for a show to have that type of organic long tail reach. The 300 is a practical limit, not a true hard limit but I'm going to guess if you set it to 800 or 1000 the feed would be too large for any app to pull effectively. Why, as a podcaster, should I care? Answer: Without getting too geeky, caching is a web technology that allows dynamically generated webpages to load quicker. It generates the webpage and stores it in memory for a time and serves it up to all visitors instead of generating the page every time. This also works for RSS feeds. When you change something in your RSS feed (add an episode) the RSS feed may be cached without the new episode. Once the cache is cleared, your new episode will be in the feed. ______________ Got a question you'd like us to answer on the show? I don't see anything about it on your site. Answer: Subscriptions in Apple Podcasts are 100% on Apple. Your website and your podcast host (no matter who it is) has nothing to do with this. Think of it like YouTube (sort of). You don't upload or do anything outside of YouTube to publish a video, it's 100% on their platform. This is Apple's version of this and its audio and/or video. The difference is people have to have a paid subscription to listen or watch your content on that system. Short answer is no, we will not be doing anything for Apple Subscriptions (or Spotify or Patreon or any other closed system). It's a different distribution method, technically, not a traditional podcast. All other podcasts work mostly like they used to. Apple pulls them in via RSS and people can listen and “FOLLOW” (instead of subscribe) just like before. ______________ If you have a question you would like us to answer on the show, drop an email to mike@blubrry.com (audio or text or even video if you want) and we may use it on the show. Often times transcripts contain too many filler words. We don't talk the same way we write (or read). DO NOT use a full transcript as your show notes (blog post). What I suggest is get the transcript and make it into a PDF or plain text file. Upload that file to your media spot on your server and put a link to it in your blog post. PDFs are highly accessible for the visually impaired and are a good way for any hearing impaired people to read (more or less) what you say on your show. This is not the same as captioning. You can also put that URL in the transcript box in the post if you are using PowerPress. One thing you can always say about how podcasting works, it's always changing. The last couple of weeks it seems that there is a sort of shift in how it works on basic levels. Or, does it work the same and only some apps are changing? Apple changed Subscribe to Follow for free podcasts. Apple added "Subscribe" for premium podcasting. Spotify say "Me too!" and adds Premium Podcasting for a very limited number of people. Apple may have changed how their app works when it comes to "followed" (ie. subscribed) podcasts work. *still not sure about that Apple really hid the "Add show by URL" function in Apple Podcasts. As a podcaster, it's good to have an overview of the industry as a whole. Such as, how many podcasts are there? That's an easy answer, over 2 million as of spring 2021. Question(s) of the Week Question: Craig on the Blubrry Facebook Group “If I post my podcast via WordPress and make the visibility "private" will it still post to my public RSS feed?” Answer: No. The post is published and the public is required for the episode to get into the RSS feed. Using PowerPress, it creates a podcast feed from your blog posts. That being what it does, all posts that are public and have a podcast episode file attached as an enclosure, will be in the RSS feed. Blogging and podcasting are the same things. If you make a blog post private, it does not show up in syndication feeds. If it’s public and published, it will go into the RSS feed. Question 2: “I recently switched website hosts and now my RSS feed is coming up with an error 404 Not Found. Any suggestions on how to fix this?” Answer 2: The problem is on the new host, your permalinks are set to default (plain) in WordPress settings. That causes your feed address to change to https://domain.com/?feed=podcast instead of https://domain.com/feed/podcast/. Set your permalinks to “post name” or anything other than “plain” and it will correct the feed address. ______________ If you have a question you would like us to answer on the show, drop an email to mike@blubrry.com (Audio or text or even video if you want) and we may use it on the show. Today, PowerPress 8.5 and Podcast Index Tags webinar Question(s) of the Week: Question: I bought a Blue Yeti microphone and I can’t get it to sound good at all. What can I do to make it sound better? Answer: The Blue Yeti is a condenser mic. Condenser mics require a quiet environment. So, if possible, record in a quiet place with lots of “soft” things around. A carpeted room with curtains over the windows, a closet perhaps. Also, you have to tweak the settings to help prevent extra sounds from getting into the mic. First thing, Yeti is a side-address microphone, which means you should speak into the side of the microphone with the Blue logo facing you. Get up close and personsal, (2-6 inches) from the microphone. Use a pop-filter in-between you and the mic. Turn the gain (volume) of the microphone down lower than you think it should be. Test the recording and turn the input to your source down until your levels are about ¾ of the way up (depending on what sort of meter you have in the software). Lower is better. Once you have finished recording, run the file though a leveling program like Auphonic. This will boost the volume back up to standard if you record low (like you should with a Yeti). Do some test recordings to get proper levels without too much background noise and remember where those settings are (or take a picture). The Yeti would not be my first choice for a podcasting mic. A dynamic USB mic like the ATR2100X, Samson Q2U or the Shure MV7 would be a better choice if you can swing it. Yeti’s are not necessarily bad, but do take a bit more care and planning to get them to sound good at first. ______________ Be sure to subscribe to the companion show to this one, Podcast Help Desk where Mike goes a little deeper into the geeky and tech side of podcasting. What are the steps needed to do that? Answer: Here is a little checklist that will help you make sure you get it rebranded correctly. Change the feed title. Change the podcast artwork. Change the feed description and the Apple descriptions to match the new name. Change the website’s domain name. If you change the domain name on the site or move to a new site, do a 301 redirect of the RSS feed. (Leave the old domain/site up for at least 30 days with the redirect in place). Give Apple and the other syndication points time to update the name/image; normally three days or so. Interview: Next week we’ll have an interview with Jenny Wheeler and her show The Joys of Binge Reading Question(s) of the Week: Question: I want to rebrand my podcast. Spotify is different, you may have to change the feed address in Spotify if you moved the feed or contact your hosting provider to make the change. ______________ Be sure to subscribe to the companion show to this one, Podcast Help Desk where Mike goes a little deeper into the geeky and tech side of podcasting. https://www.podcasthelpdesk.com ______________ Promo code INSIDER for a free month at Blubrry.com Coming at you this week from Blubrry Studios in northern and southern Michigan. If you are consistent on what day(s) and times you publish, your listeners will know to expect a new episode at a particular time which will let them build you into their schedule. Just about any time is a good time, just try to be somewhat consistent. This also helps some of the syndication points (like Apple Podcasts) update quicker as they will learn when to expect new content and pull it into their directories (don’t rely on this, it doesn’t always work). Question(s) of the Week Question: Chris on Facebook: I normally keep 300 episodes in my RSS feed. All my episodes are on my website in the episode posts. I'm thinking about dumping down to just serving just the last 100 or less. What are your thoughts? Answer: via Todd: 90% of podcasts globally get 90% of their lifetime downloads within the first 96 hours. I only have 40 episodes in my feed and I am on episode 1509 (Geek News Central). If you have written good show notes with a good episode title and a good first paragraph Google will drive traffic to those older episodes. If you are keeping it at 300, be sure to use the episode maximizer feature in PowerPress. From Mike: I agree with Todd on this. Keeping 300 is most-likely not needed as most people will never go back that far in an RSS feed, some might but it all depends on the type of content. News or topical shows aren’t long-tail, however some narrative-type podcasts, how-to or informational shows (where the info does not go out of date) may have more of a need to go to the full 300. This show, Podcast Insider, has 52 episodes in the feed, a year’s worth. The rest (179 episodes) are available on our website. This keeps the feed’s loading speed faster and the file size smaller. Question(s) of the Week Question: From Joshua on Facebook “Curious - is there any way of knowing what CFNetworks is on our statistics?” Answer: CFNetworks is a Framework for developers of iOS apps. A lot of podcast apps on iOS use it such as, but not limited to Amazon, NPR One, Skipcast and more. Basically, it’s an iOS app that downloaded your episode but not necessarily the Apple Podcasts app itself. In a lot of cases these apps use a 'user agent' so we can tell you which app. However, some of them do not always use a separate user agent. They are legitimate downloads but we cannot be identified as a particular app, so we report it as CFNetwork in the stats. It seems impossible to find out the number, can you tell me how and why? Answer: Truthfully, ‘Subscribers’ is an impossible statistic to find out accurately. Various apps use completely different ways to “Subscribe” or “follow” a podcast. They all use different timing to hit (and PULL) the RSS feed. Some apps even let the user set the timing. So, I may be subscribed to your show and my phone checks once an hour. Someone else might subscribe and their phone hits the feed 2 times a day. This is impossible to know who is who from web logs. In Blubrry stats, pick an episode that is 30 days old, click on it then go to Distribution. From there add the numbers from Podcatchers and Mobile Apps. That is a good guess of subscribers. Also, look in Trending, Day-to-Day and you will see spikes on the first day. That first day is mostly subscribers and will give you another estimate as to the number you have.
