In the dynamic landscape of podcasting, content from past episodes can be a goldmine of untapped potential. Repurposing isn't just about recycling; it's about reimagining and enhancing what you've already created to meet the evolving needs and interests of your listeners. It's a strategic approach to content creation that saves time, fosters creativity, and keeps your audience hooked. How To Repurpose Old Podcast Episodes Compilations – The Ultimate Remix Creating a compilation episode is like crafting a 'best of' mixtape. It involves cherry-picking insightful moments from various episodes and blending them into a new narrative. This method not only highlights the best of your content but also showcases diverse perspectives on a specific theme, making it a powerful listening experience. Refreshing Old Episodes The podcasting world is ever-changing, and so are our views and tools. Updating old episodes with new insights, tools, or perspectives can transform them into relevant, updated content. This approach keeps your content evergreen, ensuring your advice and insights remain pertinent no matter when they're listened to. Listener Q&A – Engaging and Personalizing Incorporating listener questions and voice memos adds a personalized touch to your episodes. Responding to specific listener queries or elaborating on past topics fosters a deeper connection with your audience and makes your content more interactive and engaging. Guest Follow-Ups – Stories That Continue Revisiting past guests to update or follow-up on their stories adds depth and continuity to your podcast. It creates a narrative arc that listeners can follow, offering insights into how ideas, projects, or predictions have evolved since their last appearance. Repurposing Final Thoughts From creating compelling compilations to updating older episodes with fresh perspectives, engaging with listener questions, and revisiting past guests, these techniques ensure your podcast remains dynamic, relevant, and intriguing.  It's not just about reusing content; it's about reshaping it to add value and maintain a strong connection with your audience. Every year the tech industry awaits Apple events, one of which was this week. And let's just say that Apple is making significant podcast changes for its app and more, and has already gotten started. This week loads of podcasts in their directory are facing issues, whether it's missing episodes or the show is gone entirely. On top of that, Apple will be releasing podcast subscriptions in their next app update. Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider. Looking to be a guest on the show? Let us know. Recorded live from two well-separated and socially distanced podcast studios in northern and southern Michigan; here’s Podcast Insider. Facebook live recording. News: Apple Podcast Changes Apple hosted one of their annual events recently and released a big update to their Podcasts app. Learn more here. And, again here. Some shows are missing from Apple Podcasts. From what we can tell, they will come back once Apple gets everything in Podcasts Connect sorted out for everyone. “We are working towards recovering most missing shows by end of day or sooner.” This is a widespread problem, don't feel singled out. Facebook is getting its feet wet in podcasting. Overcast now using PodcastIndex API for some of it’s catalog, due to Apple’s API missing a lot of feed URLS (over 500k). Outlier Podcast Festival takes place May 27th and 28th.  Best Practice: When hiring a web designer, BE CAREFUL! If you are on WordPress using PowerPress, don’t let someone move you to another web platform (Squarespace, Wix or others) without talking to us for help BEFORE the move. Page builder apps (Divi and others) are great for web pages, but not great for podcast posts in WordPress. They tend to mess up the RSS feed for show notes and in one case, does not allow the mp3 files to get into the RSS feed. Use the stock WordPress editor (Classic or Block editor). Google search is the #1 way people discover episode posts. For SEO it’s better to use WordPress posts (and PowerPress) to publish episodes. Blubrry News: PowerPress 8.6 beta is available now. Get it here if you want to test. Questions to ask before outsourcing your production, from our blog. Question(s) of the Week  Question: What are your recommendations for storing episodes on your own, for example archiving your podcast? External hard drives, cloud storage? Answer, from Mike: The old adage, 'If it doesn’t exist in 3 places digitally, it doesn’t exist', applies here. In my case I keep a copy of all my files on a server drive at my house, another copy on a removable hard drive stored off site (I switch out the backup drives once a month) and of course, Blubrry has a copy of each episode on my hosting plan. I didn’t always do this and have completely lost the first 30 episodes of one of my shows. There are cloud based services that can back things up for you. Like Amazon Glacier, Backblaze or Carbonite. Those can be a good choice as well.  You should back up your final mp3 files somehow, because you never know when something might happen where you need to re-upload a file. It’s good to have the original files where you can get at them quickly. ______________ If you have a question you would like us to answer on the show, drop an email to mike@blubrry.com  (Audio or text or even video if you want) and we may use it on the show. One of the popular messages shared by both therapists and media alike is that we are supposed to be in complete control of our own emotions before, or even IF we then turn to others and that it is necessary to love yourself first and only THEN will someone else be able to love you. But according to Dr. Sue Johnson, founder of the highly successful evidence-based couples therapy model, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), our new knowledge “stands that message on its head.” Dr. Johnson, in her latest book, Love Sense https://amzn.to/2RYEwq6, The Revolutionary New Science of Romantic Relationships, says that “we are designed to deal with emotion in concert with another person, not by ourselves.” Tony breaks down attachment issues at their very beginning, when we’re born, and then builds on why it is so important to have a secure attachment as a base to operate from in order to be more successful in navigating the complex world of human relationships. “We have cracked the code of love,” says Dr. Johnson. -Tony's new best selling book "He's a Porn Addict...Now What? Have you ever been scared by a friend? Chances are your first, or primary emotion, was fear! That's perfectly normal, after all, you're human. But what emotion follows after the initial fear response? Do you get angry because your friend scared you? Where did that anger come from? Was it because you were actually embarrassed that you dropped your phone, or that you let out a string of curse words that would make a sailor blush? Those feelings that swoop in immediately after a reaction are typically called your "secondary emotions" and those keep us away from staying in the present moment. Today we explore the world of primary and secondary emotions, and, how learning where they come from will help you better recognize and deal with them in a more healthy, present, way.In this episode, Tony refers to the article "What are Primary and Secondary Emotions" by Nadia Khan first posted on Betterhelp.com https://www.betterhelp.com/advice/general/what-are-primary-and-secondary-emotions/-This episode is sponsored by Blubrry Podcasting – Launch your Podcast the Blubrry Way. Unmeasurable Metrics: Tracking Intangibles [Episode 251]

Podcast Pontifications

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 16, 2020 8:30

The intangible benefits you get from your podcast are likely the most important evidence of your success as a podcaster. I can take this fairly complex topic and make it more simple to understand by talking about two different intangibles that you need to be tracking: reputation and resource.  For resource, I'm talking about the content you create. Even more specifically, you need to understand whether or not others perceive your content as resourceful. Is your content referenced by people after you produce it? Do people find your content such a resource that they use it as an example? When I keynote the Outlier Podcast Festival in Salt Lake City (http://outlierpodfest.com/) at the end of this month, I'm going to reference a lot of podcasts as examples of the things I'm talking about. Will yours be one? Are you making content for your show that other people, whether they are listeners or your peers, view as a resource?  For reputation, I’m talking about your reputation. Not the reputation of your shows or your episodes. This is your own reputation. Are you, personally, seen as someone with a good reputation amongst others in your own industry? Do you get invited to speak at events? Do people bring up your name in conversation when discussing your industry? And when it does come up, do others say nice things about you?  Are you seen as someone with a good reputation in your peer group? One of the mistakes I see a lot of podcasters make, especially in my peer group, is being so focused on making sure that their content is seen as a good resource that they neglect to build their own reputation. So much so that they, the person providing the content, oftentimes disappear. I can't tell you the number of shows that I listen to where I don't know the name of the host, the producer, or anyone involved. I know the name of the show, and I know the content is a good resource. But that person doesn't get any reputation points from me because I don’t know who they are. They failed to say their name enough for me to lock it into my long-term memory. They fail to brand themselves as a part of the content they produce.  As you look and listen back to your own content, ask yourself if it resourceful, and if your effort is increasing your reputation. Those are the things that I want you to understand.  I also want you to understand that you can go to RateThisPodcast.com/podpont (http://ratethispodcast.com/podpont) and leave a nice review. On whatever device you are using, that service will customize the options for you, so check it out. I also want you to buy me a coffee. BuyMeACoffee.com/EvoTerra (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/evoterra) is an easy and cheap way to show your appreciation for my content by funneling a few bucks my way. Allison Carlson (IG: @allisonbailey1) is more than a social media content creator, aka an “influencer,” she is also a wife, a future doula, a woman who has suffered through multiple difficult miscarriages, a survivor of betrayal, anxiety, depression and cutting, mother to a beautiful “rainbow baby” named Given, and yet someone who is also willing to be open and vulnerable in hopes of making a difference. In today’s episode, Allison shares how her challenges have truly shaped who she is today, and how she is continually finding that balance between living her life and sharing it. - Allison talks about what led her to influencing, and why influencing can carry such negative connotations. She also answers all of the questions that you’ve wanted to ask a successful influencer, like: do you feel like social media has an overall positive or negative effect on today’s society? How do you deal with “haters?” What advice would you give to someone who wants to become an influencer? How often are you approached by companies who want you to represent their products? Do you turn down opportunities to represent companies or products? Do you ever worry about “what’s next?” - Allison mentioned her sister-in-law, Justine, also a successful influencer, who can be found @jacimariesmith on Instagram. Just because your setup didn't change doesn't mean your environment didn't. Any crackling or buzzing? Record a little on the low side (level wise) and boost it in post. (Auphonic is a good choice) It’s better to have it too low than too high in most cases. Mic technique: be careful about echos off things like monitors walls. Talk into the mic and use a pop filter if you need to (all mics differ and can sound vastly different on different people). Blubrry News: Podcasting 101: New blog post from the Blubrry team. Todd will also be at Outlier Podcast Festival in LA Tomorrow and Saturday Sept. 13 and 14. Use the promo code "OUTLIER" for a discount on your tickets if you can make it! MAPCON (now Independent Podcast Conference) report. DC Podfest - will you be there? It's happen Nov 1st - 2nd 2019. Support: Importing Podcast vs. Migrate Media in PowerPress Import means moving the feed (posts) to WordPress via PowerPress. Migrate means copying of files from the old host to Blubrry.com’s servers. BOTH steps are needed if you have been using another company’s RSS feed for your show. After the RSS feed and files are moved, a 301 redirect is needed from the OLD feed If the old feed owner will not do a 301(Talkshoe and others) then we have a plan B to get *most* of your subscribers to move with you. Good news, we're working on enhancing our support pages. AND releasing  how-to video demos on the Blubrry features and system. Do you have something you think we need a video on? She talks about how when she first started performing, she wanted to be a serious actress but people kept telling her she was too funny. When she finally focused her sights on comedic roles, she got an agent and started working more often. Now she uses her ability to make people laugh to create hilarious commercials with her production company, The Radio Ranch. In this episode, Lisa shares stories about terrible auditions, rude yoga teachers and (almost) making out with Peter O’Toole. St. George, UT, May 19, 2018 — The Outliers Podcast Festival debuted this May where podcasters and digital influencers gathered to learn from the best, network with top level entrepreneurs and connect with like-minded individuals. The festival featured top podcasters, like Jeremy Slate of the Create Your Own Life Podcast. Slate keynoted the festival and he delivered “How to Create a Celebrity Personal Brand Without Breaking the Bank.” Slate started his podcast November 2013 and since that time has reached almost a million downloads and interviewed many of his dream guests like best-selling author Seth Godin, sales expert Grant Cardone, Sharktank host Kevin Harrington, health entrepreneur Tom Bilyeu and many more. After interviewing over 400 high performing entrepreneurs, artists and thought leaders, Slate has found common markers that lead them to their success and developing a strong celebrity brand. “It was so exciting for me to be in a room full of entrepreneurs that I have looked up to over the years and see them feverishly taking notes,” said Slate. “It was evident that event coordinator Ever Gonzales had spent a great deal of time putting together a seamless event that provided everyone a ton of value, no matter where they were in their entrepreneurial journey.” Command Your Brand Media was started by top podcast host, Jeremy Ryan Slate, host of the Create Your Own Life Podcast, and Brielle Takacs, veteran public relations strategist. With over 10 years experience in podcasting and public relations, the team started the agency to help successful business owners and entrepreneurs go from being the best at what they do to being the most well-known for being the best at what they do. To schedule Jeremy Slate for an upcoming event or to find out more about Command Your Brand Media at www.CommandYourBrand.Media.
