Your Genetics are a key part of my TUSHY Method (Y = Your genetics) and I'm so honored to have Dena Goldberg (also known far and wide as Dena DNA) joining me today! Some of the questions I know you have on your mind about genetics are: Nothing came back on my 23 & Me test. I'm good to go, right? Answer: Not so fast. 23&Me relies on "SNP testing," and only looks at "very specific bookmarks on very random genes." You'll want a more thorough test for preconception screening. I don't have any history of disease in my family. Do I need to do genetic testing? Answer: It's a good idea. There are syndromes such as Lynch Syndrome that are asymptomatic in 90% of people who are carriers. You'll want to know if you have those genetic markers before passing them on to your embryo and child. Can you make sure my embryo doesn't have autism? Answer: Autism is actually a description of a constellation of symptoms. So it's not an underlying condition in and of itself. There are hundreds to thousands of genetic causes to autism. We can catch some of these cases, but not all. Autism is multifactorial, meaning that many of these cases are probably caused by a combination of genetics and environment or in other words, nature and nurture together. There's that saying that you should never waste a good crisis. And, according to Winston Peters, the trucking companies are taking that advice and using the current fuel crisis as an opportunity to get what they've always wanted. Which is a rule change to let them carry more weight on their trucks. The Government's looking at allowing that as part of its response to the fuel situation, saying it would mean the truckies using less diesel. But Winston Peters say he's not on board with that, and we should be making greater use of rail. And I agree with him. In fact, I've long held the view that it's crazy the number of trucks we have on our roads and that we should be transporting more stuff on trains. It's crazy we have so many trucks because our roads, generally, are pretty tinpot, aren't they? Tinpot roads are not designed to cope with those heavy trucks. Let alone heavier trucks if these changes go through. Which is exactly the point the NZ First leader is making today about increasing the weight limits for trucks so they can carry more on each trip. Winston Peters says: “these weight limits are put there for good reasons, because of potholes and bridge strength and what have you." And what makes this even crazier, when you think about it, is the government is also talking about pressing pause on fuel tax increases next year. So, on one hand, it wants to let trucks carry more weight - which would undoubtedly mean more damage to the roads - and it wants to stop the fuel tax increase which would mean less money to fix the roads. How does that stack up? Answer: It doesn't. What's more, Winston Peters is accusing the freight industry of using the fuel crisis to get what it wants. He's saying today: "this isn't the first time the trucking industry's tried this on." I can't verify this for sure, but I'll take Winston on his word when he says that trains are two-and-a-half times more fuel efficient than trucks. He's also saying today, as the Minister for rail, that there are thousands of wagons available. So is he on to something? I think he is. And I think we need to see rail as a solution not just to any fuel shortage we might have to deal with in the short term - but long-term, as well. On an ongoing permanent basis, less trucks and more trains. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Questions? Comments? We love feedback! Email us at info@baishavaad.org Rav Aryeh FinkelQuestion: I went away for the summer and rented out my house to some tenants. I informed them that I wouldn't be coming home until a few weeks after they left; therefore, I asked them to turn off the air conditioner before they leave. They did not do so, and instead left the air conditioning running at 65 degrees for the three weeks until I came home. This led me to have a very high electric bill. Are they obligated to pay for this?Answer: It is possible that the tenants are liable because of the rule of garmi; however, garmi comes along with some leniencies, so that's a difficult avenue of liability to pursue. What we can determine is whether or not they are liable as an odom hamazik by leaving on the air conditioning and causing a colossal waste of electricity. The Gemara speaks about a case where a person releases water and, thereby, causes damage, and says that such a person is an odom hamazik. Releasing electricity would seem to be similar to releasing water and would also fall under this category. However, the Gemara says that one is only liable as an odom hamazik if the water damages as a “koach rishon”, the first burst of water. The subsequent flow of water is considered “koach sheni”, and is no longer categorized as an odom hamazik. In the case of the air conditioner, once it is running for a few minutes it definitely is considered koach sheni, which would seem to mean that the tenant cannot be held liable for the wasted electricity as an odom hamazik. However, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach points out that the rule that koach sheni is not considered an odom hamazik only applies to cases where the water flows forth and damages something else. Whereas, if the damage in question is that of the liquid itself that flows out, it would be considered his direct action. For example, if someone opens a tap to let wine out of a barrel, he definitely is liable to pay for all of the wine that is lost – even the liquid that flows out as a koach sheni. Here too, the electricity that is released by leaving on the air conditioner is the actual thing that was “damaged”; therefore, it can be compared to the wine in the example above and the tenant could be held liable as an odom hamazik.
When a founder refuses to let go, the business eventually hits a ceiling. In this episode of Founder Talk, Alex Sheridan sits down with Amanda Horan, Co-Founder + CEO of Line + Cleat, luxury USCG-approved life jackets, to unpack what it takes to build in a crowded category, challenge legacy assumptions, and create a brand that can grow beyond the founder.Key takeaways:00:00:00 Introduction00:03:40 Why would customers pay more for a premium product in a crowded market?Answer: Amanda explains that premium products win when they solve a neglected problem better through quality, trust, and design, not just price.00:07:47 What does USCG-approved actually mean, and why should founders care about consumer trust?Answer: It means the product passed formal testing for safety and performance, which becomes a major trust differentiator in a category full of confusion.00:12:05 How fast should founders move from idea to action?Answer: Amanda says her first real action happened within an hour, then research and outreach kept the idea moving instead of dying in planning mode.00:14:05 How can founders validate demand before building the full product?Answer: She looked at customer behaviour, workarounds, Etsy cover sales, and tagged brand photos to find proof that buyers wanted a safer, better-designed option.00:21:55 What is the most underrated marketing strategy for early-stage brands?Answer: Amanda argues that word of mouth, in-person events, and direct customer connection often beat overreliance on polished social media.00:31:20 What are founders really selling beyond the product or service?Answer: She says customers are buying the experience, identity, and emotional outcome they want to step into, not just the item itself.00:36:05 How do founders stop being the bottleneck as the business grows?Answer: Amanda points to mindset shifts, outsourcing, trusting strong partners, and deciding what truly needs founder oversight versus what should be released.00:58:20 How long should founders give a new business before giving up?Answer: Her view is at least 18 months of committed effort, because most founders quit before the business has enough time to take shape. For anyone thinking about scaling a business, building a team, or eventually selling your company, this entrepreneur podcast offers real founder lessons without hype. Founders lose great people in the day-to-day moments where pressure overrides self-awareness, feedback gets ignored, and defensiveness replaces trust. In this episode of Founder Talk, Alex Sheridan sits down with Farah Harris to unpack why emotional intelligence is one of the most underrated skills in business and why it matters more as teams grow.Farah Harris is an emotional intelligence expert, licensed therapist, founder of WorkingWellDaily, and the bestselling author of The Color of Emotional Intelligence. Together, they break down what EQ actually means and explore a core founder challenge: how do you lead well under pressure when your reactions, habits, and blind spots are shaping the culture around you?00:00:00 Introduction00:01:24 What does emotional intelligence actually mean for founders?Answer: EQ is not being calm all the time; it is understanding emotions in yourself and others and staying regulated under pressure.00:02:45 How can founders become more self-aware?Answer: Farah says self-awareness grows through repeated check-ins by noticing what you feel, where it shows up in your body, and what that data may be telling you.00:07:13 Why do high-performing founders fall into numbing habits after work?Answer: Habits like drinking, scrolling, or overworking can become avoidance patterns when leaders use them to escape emotions instead of processing them.00:18:39 How can a founder know whether they are actually self-aware?Answer: Farah argues that self-awareness without feedback is incomplete, so leaders need honest input from others to know how they are really landing.00:20:17 How do you get honest feedback from a team when you are the boss?Answer: It starts with psychological safety, consistent feedback culture, and a calm response when people say something uncomfortable.00:28:39 What should founders do when they disagree with feedback?Answer: Focus on impact over intent, add context where needed, and use better communication to close the gap between what was meant and what was felt.00:46:00 Why do employees resist change, new systems, or AI tools at work?Answer: Resistance is often a fear response, and leaders reduce it by explaining the why, lowering uncertainty, and helping people feel supported through change.00:58:10 What is one practical way founders can improve EQ today?Answer: Start by asking, “How am I feeling right now?” a few times each day and make feedback a normal part of team culture.Watch the full episode for a no-fluff conversation on emotional intelligence, founder lessons, leadership blind spots, and building a healthier team culture.
Most founders talk about delegation. Very few build a company that can actually run and grow without them.In this episode of Founder Talk, Alex Sheridan sits down with Daniel Tataje, founder of Mercy Dental Group, to unpack his path from arriving in the US from Peru, unable to practice dentistry, to building a 13-location organization with more than 135 team members. For founders and operators, this is a grounded conversation about scaling a business without losing purpose. Daniel explains why he never chased expansion for its own sake, why authentic marketing only works when the message is true, and why culture breaks when delegation is treated like a productivity hack instead of a duty to develop people. This episode offers practical founder lessons on team buy-in, perfectionism, leadership development, and building a business that people can lead well in the founder's absence.Key takeaways:00:00:00 Introduction00:01:35 What can founders learn from being forced to start over?Answer: Starting below his skill level pushed Daniel to learn every part of the business, which later made him a stronger operator and leader.00:11:15 How should founders think about growth in the early stage?Answer: Daniel focused on making one small practice excellent first instead of chasing scale too early.00:17:20 What helped Mercy Dental grow so quickly after launch?Answer: A clear mission, strong patient experience, and trust-driven execution helped double revenue within a year and created inbound growth opportunities.00:21:35 What does authentic marketing actually mean for a founder-led business?Answer: It means presenting the real identity of the business and then delivering on that promise so character, not spin, builds reputation.00:24:45 How do founders get employees to believe in the mission?Answer: The founder has to become the first true follower of the mission because teams rarely buy into a purpose the leader does not fully live.00:38:20 How do you build a business that runs without the founder?Answer: By inspiring and empowering capable people, trusting their strengths, and building leadership at every level.00:40:55 Why do so many founders struggle to let go?Answer: Control usually comes from perfectionism and fear, especially the belief that no one else can serve the client as well as the founder.Watch the full episode and subscribe to Founder Talk for more authentic founder interviews with operators who have actually built what they teach.

Question: What is required to be the worthy receiving of the Lord's supper? Answer: It is required of them that would worthily partake of the Lord's super, that they examine themselves of their knowledge to discern the Lord's body, of their faith to feed upon him, of their repentance, love, and new obedience; lest, coming unworthily, they eat and drink judgement to themselves. Today, we'll talk about Bergen, Norway. The FAQ is: Julie asked: How can I pack for several seasons in the same small pack? Answer: It's going to be a challenge if you are moving to different zones in your trip. When I was in South Africa in June, the winter weather was a challenge, as there was no heat in the homes where I stayed. I used hot water bottles in bed at night. I also wore all of my clothes. A week later, I was in Greece and gave away the warm clothes to a new friend from England. She was a South Korean, grateful. You can experiment with what you need right away and then buy additional items later on, as I did. Also, consider shipping a package with your warmer clothes to your destination. If you need more professional clothing, you can check your bag on the plane, but I rarely do so because of the cost and the time you have to wait at the airport. 60-second confidence challenge Your challenge today Confidence Challenge in Bergen: The biggest challenge may be navigating Bergen's steep hills and unpredictable weather. Rain is part of daily life here, so it's easy to lose motivation when the skies open up. The confidence builder? Embrace flexibility. Bring a lightweight rain poncho, waterproof shoes, and plan indoor stops between attractions. Locals say, "There's no bad weather, only bad clothing." You'll find your rhythm — rain or shine. A video post! The Miro board used in the video can be accessed here:https://miro.com/app/board/uXjVJi6NCs8=/?share_link_id=616280785572(PS: Miro, I'd love another sweatshirt!)This framework explains why tools help in some situations and fail in others by grounding everything in the current state of a behavior. Every important behavior in an organization sits somewhere on a spectrum: it might be purely aspirational, weakly practiced, inconsistent, friction-heavy, fully stable, actively suppressed, or not even clearly defined. Each of these states is held back by different blockers—lack of clarity, lack of skills, lack of time, workflow friction, political risk, or social norms—and each requires a different kind of support. Using a behavior-design lens like COM-B, the idea becomes simple: tools only work when they address the real blocker. Sometimes their job is to scaffold early steps and turn aspiration into practice. Sometimes it is to remove operational drag from a behavior that already exists. Sometimes it is to create shared visibility and reduce political friction. Tools matter, but how they matter depends entirely on the behavioral context they are dropped into.Show Notes (AI Generated) The Core QuestionWhen do tools matter, and how do they matter?Answer: It depends entirely on the current state of the behavior you want to see.The Seven Behavior StatesA. Normal States* Aspirational / Not RealizedOnly talked about. No real practice.* Weakly RealizedPeople agree it matters and occasionally try it, but it gets displaced by urgency and habit.* Partially Realized / InconsistentHappens in pockets. Conflicting interpretations. Local successes that have not scaled.* Mostly Realized but Friction-FilledBehavior is accepted and happening, but it is painful due to workflow friction, manual effort, tool constraints, or time pressure.* Fully Realized / StableConsistent, predictable, routinized. Embedded norms. Change feels risky.Special States* Actively SuppressedCounter-behaviors, incentives, or power dynamics prevent the behavior.* Contested / UndefinedNo shared understanding of what the behavior even is or how it should show up.COM-B EssentialsA behavior emerges when people have:* Capability* Psychological: knowledge, mental models, clarity* Physical: skills, practice* Opportunity* Physical: time, tools, workflow space* Social: norms, permission, cues, legitimacy* Motivation* Reflective: beliefs, intentions, identity, political risk* Automatic: habits, impulses, shortcutsTools can influence any of these. How Tools Help Depends on the Behavior StateIf the behavior is…Aspirational / Not RealizedPrimary tool role:Turn aspiration into a repeatable practice.Strategies:* Provide structure and scaffolding* Make early steps easy* Visualize desired state* Reinforce identity and intentWeakly RealizedPrimary tool role:Lower activation energy and make it harder to forget or skip.Blockers:* Not enough time* Habit competition* Too many steps* Short-term urgency wins over long-term valueStrategies:* Reduce steps* Support self-regulation* Nudge and cue the behavior* Make it easy to startPartially Realized / InconsistentPrimary tool role:Create a shared frame without forcing uniformity.Strategies:* Clarify purpose* Help reconcile or visualize different interpretations* Provide minimally viable standardizationMostly Realized but Friction-FilledPrimary tool role:Remove operational drag.Blockers:* Workflow friction* Manual coordination* Confusing handoffs* Tool gapsStrategies:* Standardize routines* Streamline workflows* Make bottlenecks visible* Automate repetitive workFully Realized / StablePrimary tool role:Preserve what works while reducing risk and effort.Blockers:* Risk aversion* Fear of destabilizing the ritual* Manual grind that no one wants to mess withStrategies:* Automate low-value steps* De-risk changes* Protect institutional knowledgeContested / UndefinedPrimary tool role:Clarify, name, and frame the behavior.Strategies:* Make interpretations explicit* Help teams converge on a definition* Reveal misalignmentActively SuppressedPrimary tool role:Shift legitimacy, visibility, and power dynamics.Strategies:* Provide shared visibility* Depoliticize the behavior* Reinforce norms or incentives* Create social proofTool Change Vectors (How Tools Influence Behavior)Tools can work through different mechanisms depending on the blocker:Influencing Capability* Clarification* Instruction* Cognitive offloading* Guided workflows* ChecklistsInfluencing Opportunity* Automation* Better workflows* Reducing steps* Making time and spaceInfluencing Motivation* Social proof* Legitimacy* Identity cues* Reduced political risk* ReinforcementWhat This Means for AIAI's role will differ depending on the behavior state:* In aspirational states: scaffold early steps, provide examples, generate clarity.* In friction-filled states: remove manual overhead, automate stitching, reduce coordination cost.* In stable states: protect quality, ensure consistency, prevent regressions.* In contested states: help surface meaning, definitions, and distinctions.AI is another lever in the COM-B system — not magic, but highly state-dependent.The Core InsightTools always matter, but they matter in different ways depending on:* Which behavior you're trying to support* Where that behavior currently sits on the realization spectrum* What is actually blocking it (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation)Getting this right means choosing the right intervention instead of assuming tools “fix” or “don't fix” things. In the festive spirit of Thanksgiving weekend, let me start with two trivial pursuit questions. Who famously said “It ain't over till it's over”? And what was the context for this observation?Answer: It was Yogi Berra who said: “It ain't over till it's over.” And he said it in 1973 when he was managing the underachieving New York Mets. Their season had been a long slog. They could not win consistently. After one particularly dispiriting defeat, reporters asked Yogi Berra if their playoff hopes were finished. That's when he answered, “It ain't over till it's over.” His words would prove to be prophetic. For the 1973 Mets, it was not over. The Mets rallied late in the season, they ended up making it all the way to the World Series, which they lost in 7 games. The 73 Mets emerged from their long slog to embody their manager's wisdom: “It ain't over till it's over.”Long slogs are not limited to baseball teams.I recently have been thinking about the long slog a writer of fiction named Virginia Evans who wrote eight books that never got published. She poured all her energy into writing eight novels. And eight times the answer of the universe was no. Virginia Evans started to write her ninth novel, but she was so shaken by her history of rejection that she considered abandoning her dreams of becoming a writer—and applying to law school instead. What are our long slogs? What is our ninth try?
The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Why do "crash-through" leadership styles fail in Japan? Force does not embed change. Employees hold a social contract with their firms, and client relationships are prized. Attempts to push damaging directives meet stiff resistance, and status alone cannot compel people whose careers outlast the expatriate's assignment. Mini-summary: Pressure triggers pushback; relationships and continuity beat status. What happens when a foreign boss vents or shows anger? Answer: It backfires. Losing one's temper is seen as childish and out of control. Credible leaders stay composed, persuade, and conceal negative reactions with tactful language and controlled body cues. Venting does not move work forward. Mini-summary: Composure and persuasion equal credibility; anger erodes influence. How should a foreign leader gather input if people will not volunteer it? Answer: Do not ask for open-ended opinions; ask why a proposed step would be "difficult." In practice, "difficult" signals "impossible," inviting detailed critique. Capture objections comprehensively—then pivot to "how could we make it work?" Mini-summary: Elicit critique with "difficult," then redirect to solutions. What keeps change stuck, and how do you unstick it? Answer: Early replies will be half-hearted. Leaders must be politely persistent, repeatedly asking for deeper thinking. Consensus building is time-heavy, but once agreement emerges, execution accelerates because stakeholders are aligned. Mini-summary: Patient iteration builds consensus; agreement speeds delivery. How does language shape leadership effectiveness? Answer: Japanese communication is indirect and skilled at masking true reactions; English is more direct. Effective leaders read subtle cues, avoid blunt dismissals, and use careful phrasing to maintain face while guiding decisions. Mini-summary: Indirect language protects face; nuanced messaging earns traction. Why do headquarters expectations often misfire? Answer: Timelines ignore local trust-building. Without patience for hearts-and-minds work, targets set from afar become fantasy. Expatriate leaders are squeezed by HQ pressure above and local resistance below. Mini-summary: Unrealistic HQ clocks collide with local consensus cycles. What is the typical outcome of short expatriate rotations? Answer: Progress stalls. Just as momentum builds, leaders are reassigned, leaving little legacy and forcing teams to restart under a new boss. Stability and continuity are strategic advantages in Japan. Mini-summary: Short tenures reset progress; continuity compounds gains. In this revealing memoir, a fan favorite America's Next Top Model contestant pulls back the curtain on the iconic but deeply flawed reality competition show, exposing the manipulation and chaos behind the scenes.Tyra Banks's America's Next Top Model was a cultural phenomenon with more than six million weekly viewers at its peak. Over its fifteen-year run, the show captured the glitz of the early aughts as well as its most toxic attitudes-from the glamorous but often questionable photo shoots to the cutting feedback from its highly respected if out-of-touch judges. But as its fans have grown up and as the next generation discovers ANTM, they've also begun to reckon with the enduring ways that the show has affected their body image and self-esteem.Sarah Hartshorne would have never guessed that her first foray into modeling would start with being blindfolded alongside three dozen other girls on a charter bus winding through Puerto Rico. Series: Signs & GloryTitle: “What Difference Does the Resurrection Make?"Scripture: John 11:25-26John 20:19-22Bottom line: The resurrection gives us power for today and hope for tomorrow.INTRODUCTIONCONTEXTSERMON OUTLINECONCLUSIONNOTESOUTLINESQUESTIONS TO CONSIDER DISCUSSION QUESTIONSMAIN REFERENCES USEDOpening prayer: Lord God, help us grow to be and do like Jesus, while abiding in him and leading others to do the same. INTRODUCTIONHow to Pray with Power by Nicky Gumbel"I received a call from someone in our church. He wanted me to go and pray for his wife who had suddenly been admitted to hospital for an operation. As it happened, I myself had an appointment nearby to have an injection in my shoulder. I'd had a ‘frozen shoulder' for almost two years. However, in the previous couple of days, it had suddenly got better. I explained what had happened to the consultant. He looked at me and said, ‘It's a miracle!' I said, ‘Don't frozen shoulders suddenly get better?' Over and over again, he repeated, ‘No, it is a miracle.' Here was a secular doctor trying to persuade a rather faithless pastor that what had happened could only be explained by the supernatural power of God!I thanked him very much for raising my faith, as I was about to go and pray in the hospital. As I walked through the corridors, I passed a hospital porter who was singing (quite loudly!), ‘Lay your hands on the sick and they will be healed.' I said, ‘That is exactly what I am about to go and do.' He looked deeply shocked and surprised. He obviously didn't think I looked like the sort of person who could possibly believe that!I went upstairs to pray for the woman and explained why my faith was riding high. She then said she had been reading James 5 (our passage for today), which says, ‘Is any one of you sick? Call the elders of the church to pray over you… And the prayer offered in faith will make you well' (James 5:14–15). By now the Lord had given (even me!) enough signs to pray in faith. The Holy Spirit came upon her with great power. She was not immediately healed (although she is better now), but it gave me a greater understanding of ‘the prayer of faith'.Watchman Nee wrote, ‘Our prayers lay the track down which God's power can come. Like a mighty locomotive, his power is irresistible, but it cannot reach us without rails.'"Bible in One Year 2020 With Nicky Gumbel: Day 325 • DevotionalBottom line: The resurrection gives us power for today and hope for tomorrow.“What Difference Does the Resurrection Make?”Answer: It gives us power for today and hope for forever. Big Idea: The resurrection of Jesus isn't just a belief—it's power for your real life. First, Jesus reveals himself further to his disciples by announcing that he is the resurrection and the life.I. "I am the resurrection and the life" - Jesus says he's life; his power is unstoppableJesus isn't just alive--he's life itself.Death is only defeated by life.Second, Jesus appears in his resurrection body to the cowering disciples following his resurrection. He gives them his personal presence to overcome their fear, peace in the midst of chaos, their mission as the broken to the broken, and His Holy Spirit and resurrection power over darkness and evil.1. Jesus shows up helping them overcome their fear. (John 20:19)“The doors were locked where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews.”Context: The disciples were terrified—Jesus was dead, they were next. But then: Jesus enters locked rooms. Resurrection power doesn't need your permission—it comes through fear.Application:Where are you hiding? What fear is keeping you locked up?If Jesus can enter that room, He can enter yours—your anxiety, your regret, your trauma.2. Jesus Gives Peace in the midst of chaos. (John 20:19, 21)“Jesus said to them, ‘Peace be with you.'”He doesn't say “Everything's fine.” He says, “I'm here.”Peace is not the absence of trouble—it's the presence of Jesus.Application:What if peace isn't about getting out of your situation, but inviting Jesus into it?Resurrection means your circumstances don't get the last word.3. Jesus restores their mission as the broken to the broken. (John 20:21)“As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”These are the same guys who abandoned Him—but He still calls them. The resurrection doesn't just restore life—it restores calling.Application:Have you disqualified yourself in your own mind?Jesus doesn't just forgive your past—He commissions your future.4. Jesus Gives You His Spirit and resurrection power over darkness and evil. (John 20:22)“He breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.'”The same breath that filled Adam with life in Genesis now fills disciples with resurrection power.Application:This isn't about trying harder to live better. It's about receiving the life only He can give. The Holy Spirit is resurrection applied—personal, powerful, present. Conclusion: “Do You Believe This?” (John 11:26)Back to John 11, Jesus asks Martha, "Do you believe this?"Jesus asked Martha that question before He raised Lazarus. He's asking you the same question today.Bottom line: The resurrection gives us power for today and hope for tomorrow. In September 2019 I was in a coaching cohort led by pastor and author Mike Breen. He was challenging us to imitate Peter's last healing (Acts) where he said, "Jesus heals you." (Instead of seeing himself as the healer)In preparation for that day's cohort, I wrote the following things I think would change in my life if I lived as if the sky had opened up and the resurrection power of God was available to me like it was to Jesus:I'd teach and preach with more authority given to me by Jesus MessiahI'd rely more on the Holy Spirit believing that he connects me with heaven.I'd be more likely to pray for healing over anyone—even a stranger. I'd be more evangelistically bold. I would assume that God will be putting opportunities in front of me over and over again to lead people to Christ. I would spend more extended time in prayer early in the morning/late at night.I would take more mini-retreats.I would gather with the saints for prayer more often and less formally.I'd fast and pray more.I would find myself more in the harvest than I am. Away from the church building and amongst the people. Especially needy people. The least, last and lost.I would be less concerned with the things of this world. I would live simply and not pursue trivial pursuits.I would be more about making disciples and less about building the church (though in making disciples I will build the Church).I would be more kingdom-minded. I'd constantly be looking for people of peace.I'd live fearlessly.I'd walk in truth, wisdom and love.I'd have a spirit of power, love and self-control. (2 Tim 1:7)I'd see suffering as an opportunity to fellowship more deeply with Christ instead of the pain that it is.What about you?Peter puts it all in perspective in his first sermon:““Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”” Acts 2:36-39 NIVInvitationHow do we respond? Answer 2 questions:Take out a card or piece of paper right now. Write down the answer to these questions: What is God saying to me right now? What am I going to do about it? Write this down on a sheet of paper. What I hear you saying, Lord, is ___________________.[my name] is going to believe/do __________________________________________________ as a result. Finally, share this with your Home or Mission group this week when you gather as a testimony about what God is doing in your life. You don't have to get too specific to give him praise.Lord's Supper, 1 Cor 11:23-26 is good passage. Also, say something like, "Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again." (past, present, and future)PrayNOTES"Imitating Peter," Sept 2019, MMQB I wroteMike Breen asked us to consider the following in preparation for our huddle tomorrow. Here are my thoughts…Mike points to Peter's last healing in scripture in Acts where he says, “Jesus heals you.”In Mark 15:33- we see the curtain in the temple torn from top to bottom after Jesus dies on the cross. This rending is symbolic of our new, unfettered access to heaven and God. An access that Jesus enjoyed while walking among us.Jesus had direct access to heaven. If not before, he received it at his baptism when the Holy Spirit descended on him like a dove. (Mark 1:11) There the “sky is torn” demonstrating an opening of access to Jesus that ushered in his earthly and amazing public ministry culminating in the cross and resurrection.Jesus lived under this open heaven enjoying a supernatural connection to God through his Holy Spirit. This rending of the curtain signified a breaking away from the Old Testament. A New Testament is at hand.So our access is now open to heaven as well. We now seem to have the same access that Jesus had while on earth. Is this what Peter is trying to say through Mark in his gospel, Mike Breen asks?Jesus removes the barrier of the sky and curtain between us and heaven. Therefore, what Jesus experienced uniquely is generally available. Peter is explaining what Jesus' practice is all about through Mark's gospel, he thinks. This reminded me of Mark 2 and the paralytic. “Which is easier to say…”Mike can't leave the question unanswered why does Peter's last healing does he say, “Jesus Christ heals you”?Here's Mike's sermon question he's going to preach soon (Luke 3 message at Apex):“What would it be like if we left today with the actual belief that heaven is open above you and the Holy Spirit is continuously connecting to you?”So our homework is to wrestle with my ministry practice and teaching and ask what would it look like (my practice and teaching) if I started functioning like Peter was doing? I.e. Imitating Peter in Mark and ActsSo I need to re-read Mark and Acts 1-8. At first blush, I think I would say the following:I'd teach and preach with more authority given to me by Jesus MessiahI'd rely more on the Holy Spirit believing that he connects me with heaven.I'd be more likely to pray for healing over anyone—even a stranger. (2 Tim 1:7)I'd see suffering as an opportunity to fellowship more deeply with Christ instead of the pain that it is.OUTLINESQUESTIONS TO CONSIDERWhat do I want them to know? On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got what might seem like an unlikely pairing, but one that makes sense when you dive into it: Rick Mitarotonda from Goose and M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger. If you're not into the jam-band world, Goose might not be super familiar to you yet, but in that world, the Connecticut band is absolutely massive, moving from clubs to amphitheaters over the past few years. And while jam bands themselves are pretty common—the barrier to entry isn't super high—very few have reached these heights, and after a decade Goose already find themselves in the vaunted company of bands like Phish and Dead and Company. It's kind of obvious why: They are fantastic players, and their songs offer more than just extended noodling. It makes sense that they're not influenced just by their jam forebears, but by jam-adjacent indie kingpins like Radiohead. And they've even got the stamp of approval of Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, who asked them to cover his band's song “2021”—and to stretch it out to 20 minutes and 21 seconds. The latest Goose album is Dripfield from 2022, but as you'll hear in this chat, they've got a couple more in the works. Check out their song “Give It Time” right here. As the primary creative force behind Hiss Golden Messenger, M.C. Taylor has amassed an incredible catalog over the past 15 or so years. He was initially lumped in with the alt-country scene and later with the likes of Will Oldham and Bill Callahan, Hiss records kind of defy categorization, though I should mention that 2019's Terms Of Surrender was nominated for the Best Americana Album Grammy. Taylor's latest album as Hiss Golden Messenger is called Jump For Joy, and the title is reflective of what's inside: It's looser and more playful and even groove-oriented at moments, a new move but not an unwelcome one for sure. Check out “Sanctuary” right here. In this chat, Rick and M.C. chat about making studio records versus playing live, and they get into the fundamental question of how songs are written. Answer: It's different for everybody. They both reflect, oddly, on the Hare Krishna world, and Rick decides that Goose is more like a sitcom or a sports team than a band. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:48 – Start of the chat 4:04 – What are you listening to right now? 12:05 – Rick's musical awakening 19:01 – Long songs versus short ones. “It'd be sick to have some short bangers.” 24:36 – Goose's recent lineup change and how that might affect things. 36:16 – The difficulty of writing new songs while on tour. My dad had a heart attack at 45. It was scary. Thankfully, it was the warning kind of heart attack… This was a wake-up call for him and a wake-up call for me. Dad began riding an exercise bike, I began cycling. I understood this was a process. There were benefits to doing what I was doing. Just like I've experienced the benefits of cycling and later hiking. I've also experienced the benefits of something else I've talked about on this podcast, journaling. Hi, Neighbor. To journal or not to journal? Five questions to consider. This is the second of a 5-part series about journaling. Question Number 2: How Much Time Does Journaling Take? Answer: It actually takes less time than you might think. We will explore this question through stories about my Dad and son, Jonny, and how they have reacted to traumatic experiences. Learning from their stories, I incorporated those lessons into my own life. I believe this process will inspire you to journal too. Hope and healing are on the way. Your Neighbor, Tim P.S. What good is the Old Testament Law? Answer: It was wonderful, but it had its limits. It could only reveal sin, not remove it. It showed us our true character before a holy God and our desperate need for mercy. When we are offered new life in Christ by grace through faith, we are born from above to a new life that the Law could never give.
