Stanley Ulijaszek offers some reflections about swimming in Victoria in Australia on the coast at Queenscliffe. On a beautifulbeach, long and stretching towards a point to the left and another to theright, at Point Lonsdale. A swim with a Hopper-esque sailboat sailing in gentlebut business-like fashion, in front of the lighthouse that signals the pointwhere Australia lost a Prime Minister to the water and to the waves. RustCloud, Richard Serra, rusted iron slabs of sails sculpted by the wind. Strongerout there than here in gentle crawl parallel to the sandy shore. What three wordstell the world where I am? Iterative.underwrite.swimming. A day of sun andswimming to rain and a broken car key. From delight to distress and back again.

Who says you can't? Grant Siedle is all about challenging that narrative and proving that the impossible is within reach. One of his standout ventures is Rip Swim, an open water swim through 'The Rip' from Point Nepean to Point Lonsdale. This 3.5km stretch across the entrance to Port Phillip Bay is famed as one of the most thrilling and notorious waterways in the world (don't mind the sharks). In our chat, we dive deep into the mental, physical, and even spiritual aspects of taking on such formidable challenges. We also explore the transferable skills, critical thinking, and the art of 'learning how to learn' that come with these extraordinary feats. Bea started surfing around 5 five years ago, just as a social thing in Point Lonsdale, and then gradually made it become a more frequent thing thereafter. Bea was always a short boarder and did her first comp around the age of 7 at the wahu groms comp series at Ocean Grove and she was hooked from then on in! Bea won her first state title in 2016 and then went onto junior Aussie's that year. Eventually, Bea decided short boarding was too intense and didn't enjoy the culture so she went cold turkey and went to boarding school instead! When she returned she started picking up the longboard more often and going to Victorian point break Point Impossible. Bea ended up making the state team and competed in the Aussie titles 2019 for junior log and longboard and came 2nd and 4th respectively. After a year off in 2020 due to COVID, Bea ripped her way to winning both rounds of open women log and longboard at the state titles in an unbelievable display that saw her earn several near-perfect rides. Bea was super excited for nationals this year but will have her fingers crossed all is good next year. Her brother Ted is an up-and-coming star of his own and has deflected from short boarding as well to the fine art of logging. Ted has had some great results across both surfing crafts with several wins in the Wahu national grom comp series in Victoria as well as winning other regional and local events.Through the Surfcoast Longboarders club, Ted has won multiple club events and has also won under 18s longboarding and logger titles in the Victorian state rounds twice.Bea hopes surfing takes her to cool places to meet cool people. When international travel opens up, she'd love to do some comps and travel in the northern hemisphere in some warmer waters! I'm passionate about surfing for mental health and want to get involved with the ocean mind. Bea is remarkably smart and in the future wants to study biomed or something in the health field. Ted just wants to have fun and meet great people. In the 2020 lockdown, he could focus on longboarding as a physical and mental outlet, seeing him improve drastically. One day he'd love to do the Vans Duct Tape Invitational. Both have amazing futures in the sport and they are certainly a pair to watch out for in the future.

Requin: Requin are a three piece band from Brisbane that are playing an incredibly intricate math rock blend. Their harmonies will lull you perhaps into a false sense of security, but often bring you to a wholesome feeling of beauty amongst brutal time changes which always keep you guessing. They are comprised of Fionn Richards, Keeley Young and James Eyre Walker on a variety of instruments from keys, saxophone, bass pedals, guitars and drums. They released two singles, ‘Return to Sender’ in 2017 and ‘Blood, Sweat and Bees’ in 2018, all leading up towards an EP released in October of 2018 called ‘The Noisy Miners Swoop Him’. It was a 5 track beautiful recording which highlighted the complexities of their music and their direction which truly sounds unique. On stage they consistently blow people away and you can physically see the buzz around them grow as the crowds get bigger, as do the venues. One thing that no one can deny is that seeing Requin on stage is seeing three friends who truly love playing music together; their joy is palpable and one that spills out into the audience. Recorded Live at the Our Sound Festival on the 6th of April 2019. McKisko: McKisko, is an artist that really is hard to compare to. Her music is just that combination of sounds and energy that makes you existentially wander into a deep place of thought and end up with pure peace with the world because music exists. She has released three albums in her time, starting with ‘Glorio’ in 2009. She then won the Grant McLennan fellowship and moved to Berlin, which eventually formed the basis for her cult favourite album ‘Eximo’ in 2013. In 2019, we were lucky enough to receive another album called ‘Southerly’ released in February. ‘Southerly’ is an amazing body of work which showcases her incredible talent with an album that has such depth and you can feel the space and patience of the record. It was recorded in Point Lonsdale, a beautiful sea side town, and you can hear how the album ebbs and flows going in and out with the tide. This night we got to hear a few tracks from ‘Southerly’ and she was accompanied by a guitarist and a violin which was truly incredible. It felt like a collective moment for the audience that we were lucky enough to be a part of, and now so can you. Recorded live at Our Sound Festival at the Foundry.

According to Canadian anti-euthanasia campaigner Alex Schadenberg, Melbourne doctor Rodney Syme is a threat to society: a ‘cowboy’ and ‘the worst of the worst’. Why? Because for over a decade now, Syme has been publicly assisting terminally and chronically ill patients to die – despite the threat of jail for doing so. How did a respectable 80-year-old urologist come to be a law-breaking cowboy? Melbourne urologist Rodney Syme — Photo: supplied 'I thought: what is ethical about me being able to end my own suffering but my patients have to go on?' Rodney Syme Sandra Morris and Albert Leonzini, both featured in this episode — Photo: Emily Sexton It began 40 years ago, with a patient of his who was dying of kidney cancer. Her name was Betty. Syme could hear her screams from the foyer of the hospital. He didn’t know how to help her – but his conscience was pricked. Syme knew that, as a doctor, if he were in the same kind of pain, he could find drugs – or help from other doctors – that would mean he didn’t have to suffer like Betty. He began to wonder: why should he have access to this help, but not his patients? Over the last two decades, Rodney Syme estimates that he’s helped more than 100 people to die. Assisting a suicide carries a maximum five-year jail term in Victoria. But, despite publicly challenging the police to charge him, no charges have yet been laid. In late 2015, on national television, Syme admitted that he had helped Point Lonsdale man Steve Guest to die. He continues to provoke the law in the hope that a new and more compassionate one can be written: one that allows people with unbearable and untreatable suffering to request assistance to die. Please note: this podcast is not about suicide.
