How do I become a better listener? Orly Israel has learned that human connection is the key to overcoming loneliness, strengthening communities, and changing lives. After years of volunteering in crisis hotlines, prisons, and shelters—and experiencing his own personal loss—he's made it his mission to help people listen, connect, and show up for one another. Now, Orly is using this experience to amplify his message. He continues to speak, teach, and create spaces for people to connect, ensuring that no one feels invisible and that support is always within reach. In episode 562, we find out why Orly decided on Syracuse University, how he lost everything in the LA fires, what he learned about young men by volunteering on a Suicide Hotline and Prison Program, What is The Listening Table, the best ways to form connections with potential new members on campus, how we can best retain our members in fraternities and sororities, how to become a better listener, how Warmline helped 500,000 people get support before they reach a crisis point, and Orly's advise to people who haven't been able to build a following or be consistent in their content creation. Enjoy!

“There is no problem with pain. There is pain. If you are seeking something to avoid pain, that's the suffering. That's the search that must be called off.” It takes effort to avoid our emotional pain. We can try to avoid it, but ultimately the common strategies of withdrawing, protecting, and dissociating from feelings of hurt actually turn emotional pain into unnecessary suffering. This lively exchange taken from the Gangaji archives offers a clear demonstration of how we can recognize the strategies we use and then choose to give up the power to suffer.   Learn more about Gangaji, her in-person and online events, Prison Program, and more at gangaji.org.  To make a donation to support this podcast or other programs that support the recognition of the inherent peace alive in all being and the ending of unnecessary suffering, please visit our giving page.  With gratitude..

Lisa D’Onofrio is a writer, facilitator of creative journaling workshops, literacy advocate, festival director and the facilitator of the Read Along Dad’s programs with fathers in prisons in Victoria, Australia. Today we discuss Lisa’s love of words and books and the influence this has had in her life. From the influence of her parents who were big readers and encouraged her to read books at home and at the library, where this became one of her greatest passions, to the work she now does in prisons facilitating the Read Along Dad’s program with incarcerated people. Being able to give people the opportunity to express their stories has always been the driving incentive behind the work that she has done. She did a course in professional writing, and then lived in England for 17 years where she found her own way in her career path, before moving back to Australia in 2010 and setting up a children’s literature festival and was asked by the Friends of the Castlemaine Library (FOCAL) to go into prison and run a literacy program in prisons. This became the Read Along Dad’s program, based on the Storybook Dads program in the United Kingdom, which is a program for those in prison. The incarcerated person, for example a father, picks a book to read to their child and then reads it out loud while it is being recorded. The recording is then sent to the child along with the book and they can read along to the book while listening to their father’s voice. It is now run in two male prisons and one female prison in Victoria. Lisa mentions the courage that is shown by those in prison when reading and recording these stories and the way that it allows conversations to open up between parents and children. Lisa also talks about the challenges in running programs like Read Along Dads in prisons, such as bureaucracy but also the importance of rapport and persistence in running programs in prisons. Lisa also does a creative writing, shared literacy, and book club in prisons and gives people the opportunity to talk about things that are separate to the prison whilst facilitating connection between people. Anything that can keep an inmate from returning to prison benefits everyone - society, the taxpayers, the inmate's family, and the inmate - says Dan Bielenberg, founder of Business In A Box. A return guest, Dan was a hands-on home builder and designer before the housing downturn. He decided to work for the State for the job security and wound up being fascinated by reforming law offenders. He has seen change, even in the words used, toward the attitude of reformation. For one thing, the word "inmate" does not exist as of this year, replaced with the tag "adult in custody" - AIC. So his programs allow AICs to start a real business while institutionalized, the idea being they will have a way to make a living and be in charge of their own destiny upon being put back into society. Now four years old, the program has developed high standards; you're either serious or you're out, and the AICs know it. Anyone who runs with the prison gangs or does anything against the guidelines is out for at least a year. Being part of a special program is a privilege and Dan will not allow any individual AIC to bring down the standards. Filmmaker Lynn Novick’s new documentary “College Behind Bars,” set to air on PBS later this month, follows the journeys of men and women pursuing academic degrees while in prison. In doing so, it illustrates the life-changing nature of educational opportunity while also putting a human face on mass incarceration and, as the film’s website puts it, “our failure to provide meaningful rehabilitation for the over two million Americans living behind bars.” Prison education programs including the one featured in Novick’s film, the Bard Prison Initiative, are among efforts to address that failure across the nation. Locally, both St. Louis University and Washington University run programs that bring faculty members to several of the region’s correctional institutions to lead college-level classes. And like other such programs, they boast extremely low recidivism rates for participants who have since been released from prison. In this episode, Novick sits down with host Sarah Fenske to discuss her film and the critical issues it puts in the spotlight. An alumnus of the Bard Prison Initiative, Salih Israil, participates in the conversation, too, as does Paul Lynch, the director of SLU’s Prison Program.

On this episode of Rhian's Hope, I'm talking with Zach Skow, Founder and Executive Director of Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue, a non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates, trains and re-homes death row dogs from Kern County’s high-kill animal shelters, and Pawsitive Change Prison Program, a progressive and intensive rehabilitation program which matches death row dogs with inmates inside four California State Prisons. But before Zach started changing the lives of dogs and men, he had to battle alcoholism, addiction, and end-stage liver failure at just 28 years old.  Marley's MuttsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MarleysMuttsDogRescue/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marleysmutts/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/MMDogRescue   Pawsitive Change Prison ProgramFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pawsitivechangeprogram      Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pawsitivechangeprogram Alcoholics Anonymous Check out Rhian’s Hope online: rhianshope.com  facebook.com/rhianshope  instagram.com/rhianshope  twitter.com/rhianshope   Music from Jukedeck – create your own at http://jukedeck.com

In this week's episode, the focus is on the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program, which is operated under the umbrella of Monty's Home, a North Carolina-based organization that was inspired into being by the love and generous spirit of Monty, a dearly loved therapy dog and canine star who brought sunshine into the lives of many. After Monty succumbed to cancer, his human companion, Barb Raab, created an organization in his memory and today, through Monty's Home, sunshine continues to be shed on dogs and human beings through efforts like the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program. We learn how dogs are selected from kill shelters to undergo training in preparation for adoption into permanent homes. We hear how, after passing through a 19-test evaluation, each new "class" of dogs moves into the Pender Correctional Institution in Burgaw where they are trained by specially-screened inmates over a period of eight weeks. Upon graduation, the dogs go home to their adoptive families. Pawsitive Partners is credited with not only saving the lives of canines but saving the lives of humans as well. Questions or Comments?
