When it comes to money – especially feelings of insufficiency or inadequacy – there's often a lot more going on than the numbers. I was so lucky to host the incredibly inspiring Joan Sotkin in an intense conversation about our relationship with money and prosperity. She shared her unique philosophy and approach to helping people with their finances, and we learned a lot about things like· It's not about the money; it's our habitual emotions that are the issue· We have learned attitudes about ourselves and our relationship with the world that impact how we feel about money· Connecting with our emotions will do more to resolve our financial concerns than you'd expect· Bonus: Learn why, for Joan, making the business scalable and saleable isn't her priorityThe conversation got deep about childhood, feelings, and our fundamental approach to life. I've continued to think about what Joan had to say, and I think you will too. I'd love to have a conversation with you about this podcast and how it might relate to your business. Today, I'm talking about something very dear to my heart. It's about the chaos that we are living through and it's going to get much worse. Although many things are adding to the chaos, there are actions we can take in order to experience inner peace in the midst of the chaos. Highlights One day, when I was in meditation, I heard the following: We are going into a period of great chaos. Many people will leave the planet, and the chaos in the Middle East will get so bad that people will ask, “How could a benevolent God allow this to happen?” People are being trained to be points of light in the midst of this chaos. I knew, at that moment, that I was one of the people going through that training. There are a lot of opportunities now for us to recognize that these are chaotic times. I list some of those opportunities. Our individual response to everything that is going on is a matter of brain science. Our brains are designed to warn us of danger when the outcomes are uncertain. Uncertainty causes stress, and stress is a major cause of physical and emotional dis-ease. When you make changes and move in a positive direction, that energy affects the whole world. You get to decide how you want to be in the midst of the chaos. It's okay if you're upset about what's going on, but it helps to find a way to be okay with what is and to decide what actions you want to take. You get to decide if you're willing to learn how to develop inner peace no matter what's going on. In 1788, when the Constitution was ratified, there were only 238,000 people in the entire country. People have not been taught that they have the option of choosing how they want to feel. One of the best things you can do is to connect to people who were not just like you. Ask yourself, do I want to continue living and feeling the way I do now? I believe that there is a part of you that sees the bigger picture and will guide you to what you need to live a life that allows you to express yourself. Playing "ain't it awful" does not lead to a comfortable life. If you believe that energy matters, then take a look at the energy you are generating. You have the power to create the life you want, but it doesn't happen by just doing affirmations. Action is the key. Joan Sotkin, 81, is author of 8 books, a financial coach whose approach is based on brain science and podcast host of The Prosperity Show. “What you believe affects what happens in your life. Every decision has an emotional component.” - Joan SotkinIn 1976, Joan gave away all of her possessions and moved to California, where she immersed herself in meditation. While in Venice, during a deep meditation, she heard: “Go buy a pound of tumbled stones”. She soon built a successful business selling ‘Joan's Stones'. Unfortunately, she never understood cash flow. She realized she had to change her persona and become clear on how she wanted to be in the world. Joan learned how to eliminate hypochondria from her life and began studying the connection between emotions and health. With epigenetics, she says, we have the ability to ask, “What can I do to change that?”Today, Joan is a financial coach who guides people to uncover the habits that affect their emotions around money. In my course Rewire Your Brain for Prosperity & Financial Freedom, I introduced the 4Rs process for creating new emotional responses to familiar stimuli. In this episode, I focus on the process, especially the Release step. Highlights I define the 4Rs - Recognize, Release, Replace, Repeat. The Recognize step can take a while to complete for each instance. Feelings don't happen in your head. They have been when neuropeptides, which start in your brain, travel to receptor sites in the cells of your organs. Saying the feeling that you're experiencing out loud helps to release the neuropeptides from the receptors. You're actually expressing the feeling. I talk about different ways of using sound to release both feelings and the thoughts that can be looping around in your head. Bringing hidden emotions into the light has a very strong effect. Call to get to the hidden emotions that started early in childhood. If you have any questions about the technique, then ask me those questions by writing to Joan@ProsperityPlace.com. ln this episode, I talk about the epidemic of aloneness that is in our country now and how we need to learn to connect to each other to make our lives work better. I also outline how this podcast might be changing and some of the activities that are coming up on Prosperity Place. Highlights I talk about a dive I did recently into aloneness. Once you process and emotion it, it no longer runs your life the same way. It's now time for me to combine what I've learned about the inner world with business skills. In this time of chaos, it's more important to get in touch with your inner self so you can be led to what you're supposed to be doing. To make more money, it's important to understand the world of money. If you're feeling stuck, then you probably are. If you don't keep moving forward by changing, you're going to stay stuck where you are. Self-care activities are just as important as business activities. Love yourself, let go, and connect – and wait to see what shows up. Most people don't know how to wait. I talk about the dysfunctional systems in the United States. How can we work together to make our futures better? If you want to make significant change in your life, it's best not to try to do it alone. Are you willing to look at your life and understand that you have the power to change it, if it isn't working for you now? Links Money Energy Tuneup Interested in the Group? Key Takeaways: Living paycheck to paycheck can cause a lot of stress on a cellular level. Joan shares her health journey. Joan’s father was a man’s man and one of his Sotkin family rules was ‘Sotkins don’t feel’! This meant Joan had buried all of her emotions in her body. Money was a big deal in Joan’s family. Do not let your money determine how you feel. Fear comes not from the situation itself, but how you respond to the situation. If you’re frightened in your everyday life, you’re going to be frightened about your money. Sometimes we are unaware of how much anger and shame we hold within ourselves. It takes time to work through that anger and to become free. You have to consciously manage your money or else it disappears! There is so much cultural belief about not being able to make money. Don’t let that hold you back. In 1976, Joan had enough and she gave away everything that she owned. When you listen to the slight voice inside, interesting and wonderful things begin to happen. Love yourself, let go, and connect. Episode Summary: Joan Sotkin received news from her doctor when she was in her mid-30s that her illness and chronic pain were just a part of getting older and to just ‘deal with it.’ She decided to take her health into her own hands and little did she know it would begin a lifelong journey into health, wellness, and our emotional connection to money. Joan is 77 years old today and I am so glad to have her share her wisdom with my audience. Join me for part two of my conversation with Joan Sotkin, host of the Property Show podcast. In this episode, we continue the conversation on a wide array of topics; particularly the aftermath of the 2016 election, and how we can move forward. We talk politics, religion, consciousness, meditation, prosperity, and so much more. And be sure not to miss part one! Joan’s bio: For the past 30 years, I have been examining alternative ways of dealing with life on many different levels. Defining success as merely making a lot of money and having social or career status has never made sense to me. As a result, I have been looking for something deeper and more meaningful and learning to integrate what I discover into my business and personal life. Prosperity Place is my humble contribution to those of you who, like myself, want to experience the “more” of life while creating satisfying and prosperous lives. I don’t believe that it is possible to separate career and/or business development from personal growth because who we are expresses itself through whatever we do. What you will find on these pages is the result of my search for physical, emotional, spiritual and financial comfort. I don’t pretend to have all the answers. What I do have is a series of learning experiences, the essence of which I like to share with people like you. In the early 1980s, while attending 12-step programs including Debtors Anonymous and Codependents Anonymous, I began to understand the connection between emotions and the life stories we create for ourselves, including our finances. Years of working to release my own repressed emotions helped deepen my understanding of how we act out family-of-origin issues through our businesses and finances. I love working with forward-thinking individuals who are willing to implement new ways of being with themselves and their commercial ventures. As I continue to learn and grow, my passion is sharing with others and helping them find both peace of mind and prosperity. Santa Fe, New Mexico, where I live, with its expansive skies, friendly people, and abundance of healers provides me with the comfort and peace I have always craved. Thanks to the Internet, which I have been using since 1995, I can live in this wonderful town with my precious dog, Angel, and reach out to clients around the world. Every afternoon, Angel and I walk at our fabulous dog park that has one-mile-long trails with a full view of the city. The Think Outside the Lines podcast returns this week with an all-new episode featuring Joan Sotkin, host of the Property Show podcast. In her first appearance earlier this year, we discussed all things money, and if you haven’t heard it yet, I strongly recommend you go back and check it out. In this episode, we touch upon a wide array of other topics; particularly the aftermath of the 2016 election, and how we can move forward. We talk politics, religion, consciousness, meditation, prosperity, and so much more. And because there is so much to digest, Ive divided this episode into two parts. This woman has lived so much life, and offers such incredible perspective. I promise you will find many gems in these conversations. It’s time to think outside the lines, again, with Joan Sotkin. For the past 30 years, I have been examining alternative ways of dealing with life on many different levels. Defining success as merely making a lot of money and having social or career status has never made sense to me. As a result, I have been looking for something deeper and more meaningful and learning to integrate what I discover into my business and personal life. Prosperity Place® is my humble contribution to those of you who, like myself, want to experience the “more” of life while creating satisfying and prosperous lives. I offer an open invitation to anyone who wants to meet me at the park and walk with us! http://prosperityplace.com/ Seth Greene is a 6 Time Best Selling Author, Nationally Recognized Direct Response Marketing Expert, and the only back to back to back GKIC Dan Kennedy Marketer of the Year Nominee. Today we interview Joan Sotkin of Prosperity Place, who approaches money in a holistic way. Because listen, emotion matters when it comes to money. Joan’s Story Joan comes from a family of compulsive debtors. She was born in 1940, a time when women’s roles were pretty prescribed. Joan got married and started on the prescribed path. She became a teacher but didn’t like teaching any more than she liked being married. She felt out of place. Looking for something else, she started studying what she terms, “woo woo stuff,” like astrology and healing crystals. In the 1980’s she began selling crystals and minerals for healing and meditation and was making great money. In 2015 money, she was bringing in $50,000 a month! And then she went bankrupt. Joan didn’t know how to manage cash flow. Her father died and she has since learned that people often deal with a big trauma by overspending. Her field started to grow and she didn’t know how to compete. Eventually, the business closed. Early Adopter In 1995 Joan discovered online business and taught herself how to build websites. A year later she moved to Santa Fe with $200 and whatever possessions fit in her car. In 1997 she started Prosperity Place. It’s a place for her to teach people what she learned from her mistakes and successes. Joan was an early podcaster too. She started podcasting in 2005. When Word Press came out she started building websites for other people. Insanity Defined Joan found that old saying, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result” to be true. She sees people acting out emotions through business and financial decisions over and over. You have to get in touch with your emotions in order to sustain success. We can know intellectually what to do but it still has to be done by a person (us) and a person can get in the way of doing it. Money And Emotion Our thoughts, beliefs, and emotions are what form our decisions. If you’ve had emotional issues in childhood, they sometimes manifest themselves in the decisions we make. If certain needs aren’t met, we feel deprived. If there is abuse or neglect, there is a feeling of being trapped in a situation. These emotions have to be expressed one way or another. That way can be healthy or it can be unhealthy. If your “story” is always ending the same way and you don’t like the ending, you can change it. Worrying about the future doesn’t help the future. Life doesn’t happen to you, it happens to you. Stress As A Motivator Does stressing over a situation motivate you to work harder? In that case, stress can seem like a beneficial thing. If you weren’t stressing so much, you would sit around playing video games instead of working toward a goal that will allow the stress to be alleviated. Being chronically stressed can cause adrenal fatigue which can lead to chronic disease. Making decisions based on fear can lead to poor decisions. You Are Not Required To Worry Do you feel as though if you don’t worry, you’ll fail? Some people who are very afraid to fly feel this way. Through the entire flight, they concentrate on the plane not crashing. When it doesn’t, they’re convinced that it was their worry that kept that plane aloft. They believe worry makes things happen or can prevent things from happening. Worrying is a waste of time. It’s creating a future that does not exist. You’re making it up! This doesn’t mean you stumble blithely along through life with no plan. But there is a difference between anxiety and concern. Whenever Joan starts worrying about money, she says to herself, “A large sum of money from an unexpected source.” Because that is as likely to happen as any doomsday scenario she could come up with thro... On this episode of Rhodes to Success, I interview Joan Sotkin, who is an author, coach, and business woman, and has helped thousands of people understand why they do what they do with their money and how to alter their financial behavior. Joan is the founder of Prosperity Place and author of the award-winning book Build Your Money Muscles. Her passion is helping people improve their relationship with their money and themselves. During the show, Jessica and Joan discuss business and bookkeeping, why we do what we do, money, and shame. Main Questions Asked: - What brought you into working on money issues with people? - Should everyone learn how to do his or her own bookkeeping and manage cash flow? - What are the characteristics or personality traits that cause some people to have better relationships with money? Key Lessons Learned: Business & Bookkeeping - It's possible to have someone in the bookkeeping role, but you have to know what the numbers mean. - The first step is to make a decision to take care of your business. - Business isn't something you go into where you love everything you do every minute. - Taking care of your finances isn't about knowing numbers; it's about data entry. - Managing cash flow isn't what a bookkeeper does. They just keep the books. - Mental math is a useful way to turn the left part of your brain on. - Your business is an extension of you, and if you're still in financial fear, you won't look at your numbers if you feel shame. Why We Do What We Do - In the beginning stages it's important to understand why you do what you do with your money now and how you can get to a point of being more functional. - Recognize the kinesthetic experience in your body when you talk about money. - Count your money and spend less than you earn. Money, Shame, & Feelings - If you feel shame about your finances, it is never about money. It is about relationships and how you feel about yourself and your relationship with others. - Don't stress and worry about the past; take action for what you want to happen in the future. - When you love, accept, acknowledge, and appreciate yourself, the world will mirror that back to you. - Our need for touch determines so much of our business and financial outcomes. We weren't meant to ‘go it alone.' - The longing for money is the same feeling as longing for touch. Subscribe to the show in iTunes or Stitcher Radio! Author, speaker, business and money coach Joan Sotkin said she was a mess before she realized how her emotions were holding her back from becoming a millionaire. She says that once we are aware of how we actually feel about money and success we can achieve our goals. For example, we have to look at our upbringing and the habits we developed in early childhood. How did our parents think and talk about money and wealth? Were there negative experiences we embrace that could be holding us back? It’s not who we are; rather it’s how we behave that creates the lives we have now. While some personality traits cannot be changed, and we wouldn’t want to, we can create a new identity. Joan says she was the girl who was always being rescued, so that became her identity. She wasn’t well emotionally and physically, and that sense of unhealthiness became a part of her identity. When she had the epiphany that these identity traits were holding her back from the wealth and happiness she craved Joan flipped the switch to move toward creating her new identity. She talks about how she had to get through what she calls the “moving stupids,” which she explains happens to us when we are in the process of creating our new identities. Hers came in the form of being one of the first new-age originators with Joan’s Stones that were in 600 stores. This business brought her $30K in income every month, yet she went bankrupt because she hadn’t yet learned the habits of a wealthy person, like managing her cashflow and saying no. She had to develop new habits. The good news is that she did and grew her wealth again by helping others prepare for and create the lives they want. The creator of Prosperity Place, Joan Sotkin teaches us how to remove our heavy, old, tired emotional baggage to allow true prosperity to enter our lives. She says that while we have no money is actually the best time to train our brains to prepare to handle the wealth, and then we won’t just create it, but we will actually be able to manage our money well. Everything starts with our feelings. We have to start shifting away from our past habits and break the negative feelings we may have about money.
