Note: There is swearing in this episode. In 2017, The University of Minnesota asked comedian Maria Bamford to give their commencement speech. But the University may not have known what it was in for. In her speech, Bamford told the crowd of graduates how much the university offered to pay her (nothing), her counteroffer ($20,000), and the amount they settled on ($10,000), which (after taxes and fees, etc.) she gave away to students in the audience to pay down their student loans.Maria Bamford is a big believer in full disclosure of her finances, a philosophy she's adopted after decades in a Debtors Anonymous support group. In meetings, she learned important financial tips and tricks to go from thousands of dollars in debt to her current net worth of $3.5 million (a number which, true to her philosophy, she will share with anyone). She spoke with us about her financial issues, how she recovered, and why she believes in total financial transparency, even when it makes her look kinda bad.Disclaimer: Planet Money is not qualified or certified to give financial advice. Stuart talks about the effects of alcoholism on his life and the benefits of recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous.  His dad left the family early and his family was poor, so he felt these effects during his early schooling. Stuart formed friendships with kids in similar positions and started drinking around 16 years old and using marijuana when he was about 18.  Money was an ongoing problem though, even when he had a successful business as his alcoholism progressed.  Stuart found help with his alcoholism through Alcoholics Anonymous and his life improved, but his money management was still a out of control. A friend recommended Debtors Anonymous and Stuart found at last he understood why money couldn't stick to his fingers.Unsurprisingly, over 20 years sobriety, Stuart's life, work, and relationships improved. If you would like to find out more about Debtors Anonymous, then you can go online at debtorsanonymous.org.au for more information on recovery from compulsive unsecured debt.#Recovery #Alcoholism #debtors #LivingFree #compulsionYou can show your support to the Living Free show and keep us on air by:subscribing to 3CR 3cr.org.au/subscribe and/or donating to 3CR 3cr.org.au/donate Music on the show today:@15:00 – Les Thomas' (lesthomasmusic.com) new record The Circus (Has Moved On) - What's left when the spectacle of life, the metaphorical circus, moves on? Here is a little about Cheryl.  She often says, "Slowbriety" – She is 26 years in recovery. Her great dependency on human aid was killing her; it took on the form of para-alcoholism / codependency. She made it to Al-anon and after many years there went onto several other 12 step fellowships – Overeaters Anonymous and Food addicts Anonymous, and Debtors Anonymous. These fellowships helped, however she had lots of information with very little transformation.  After reading an article published by Bill W. in 1958 called “The Next Frontier: Emotional Sobriety” -- She arrived at the door of Adult Children of Alcoholics. This is where her life started to take on new meaning. she can honestly say that she is coming to – a state of consciousness, awakened spiritually. Step 2 –is not that I am crazy or insane rather the Latin term Sanitey = the condition of having a healthy mind.Reco12 is an organization with the mission of learning and sharing the similarities of addiction of all kinds and gaining and sharing tools and hope from others who are walking a similar path.  Speakers from our past meetings have represented many fellowships and identify with addictions with such variety of alcoholism, drugs, food, sex, gambling, theft, just to name a few.  Each Friday at noon central time, we hold a live, lunch-hour speaker meeting with a recovering addict from anywhere on Earth, pertaining to any or no faith tradition, and with any background, who shares their experience, strength, and hope on a specified recovery topic of their choice.  They share for 20-25 minutes on that topic, and then the live audience gets the opportunity to ask questions of that speaker for another 20-25 minutes.  Reco12 is a self-supporting service and we appreciate your help in keeping it that way.  We gratefully accept contributions to help cover the costs of the Zoom platform, podcast platform, web hosting, and administrative costs.  To contribute, you can go to https://www.reco12.com/support  or you can click the link to PayPal (https://www.paypal.me/reco12)  in the chat of the live meeting.  When you contribute, please specify the meeting number.  This is meeting number 89.  Resources from this episode:Al-AnonOvereaters AnonymousFADebtors AnonymousAdult Children of AlcoholicsSpiritual Gangsters link to meetingsBig Book SponsorshipBig Red Book of ACACODASLAAOutro music is “Standing Still” by Cory Ellsworth and Randy Kartchner, performed by Mike Eldred and Elizabeth Wolfe.  This song, and/or the entire soundtrack for the future Broadway musical, “Crosses:  A Musical of Hope”, can be purchased here:  https://music.apple.com/us/album/crosses-musical-hope-by-cory/528476262  This song is used with the  permission of Cory Ellsworth.Support the show (https://www.reco12.com/support)

In this podcast about compulsive spending and debt, we discuss the nature of the disorder, how to recognise it and what we may do about it.We learn that:Compulsive spending and debt go hand-in-hand. If we did not have a spending compulsion, the chances are that we would not use unsecured debt. Most compulsive spenders and debtors use their behaviour to hide from emotional realities and do not want to be held accountable. To stop over-spending and debting, we need to starve the compulsion lest it overtake us and make our lives hell yet again.Participating in the fellowship of Debtors Anonymous can save us the pain of the consequences of unrestrained spending and keep us from hurting those who love us and depend on us.The ultimate answer for us who have been saved from ourselves lies in working the Twelve Steps, one step and one day at a time.

Laurie is grateful to say that when it comes to addiction she pretty much have them all with a few exceptions.   She initially got sober in Alcoholics Anonymous in NYC Sept 29th, 2001. About 2 wks after the 911 attacks. AA in downtown NYC was a vibrant scene and she was most grateful to be given a second chance at life.  Shortly thereafter it became clear that she had more problems than just alcohol and in 2002 entered Alanon (on her knees), as she was deeply entrenched in an addiction and obsession with a heroine addict she met in AA. From there she would enter Overeaters Anonymous, Debtors Anonymous, Adult Children of Alcoholics Anonymous and Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous. She has learned that there is no finish line in recovery.  She has come to know that her various addictive experiences can benefit others. When she makes helping others her primary purpose, miracles happen. She is forever indebted to a loving Higher Power for her life and her recovery. In this article, we discuss the often-avoided topic about money and its hold over us. We entitle this essay: "Does Addiction Hide in Your Wallet"?The key point is that it's not about the money, it's about the compulsion and the certain knowledge that I cannot stop doing this and start doing the opposite on my own.We cover the following topics:The odds are that in an addicted household, the disease has run through the family like a freight train, destroying any semblance of normalcy and wrecking the family finances.Being or becoming a compulsive spender and debtor, although not limited to addicts and their families is a common and tragic outcome of addictive disorder. It sows chaos across every dimension of family life. The fundamental dynamic of spending and being in debt uncontrollably is an infantile desire to not be held accountable for anything, really. That's why the 12 steps of AA are so pertinent; the same sentiment holds true for addicts and alcoholics. We are all children who do not want to grow up.The many symptoms I called out above are meant to see if you can identify with some of these behaviours and attitudes and to see if you could find some release from the bondage of debt.It is indeed not about the money which is but a signal of the problem. It's about the compulsion, and with the Tools of Debtors Anonymous, some of us have been blessed to find our release from this potentially tragic compulsion.

Is He a Money Drunk, Too?In this post, we learn more about what it means to be a money drunk, that is, using wanton spending and being in debt to feel good for just a little while, heedless to the financial consequences inflicted on the family. We cover these topics:Being a money drunk means that you use money as a drug, that you have a compulsion to spend and use debt to feel better about yourself, if only for a little while. When I say YOU, that means that anyone can be a money drunk, whether it's the addict in the family or family members themselves, whether or not they classify as addicts in the conventional sense.Because addicts and alcoholics – those who are still active in their disease – operate with damaged brains incapable of rational decisions, they are wildly irresponsible and chaotic when it comes to money and are in a great position to wreak havoc to the family's finances. The inconvenient truth is that the family is also in the grip of a powerful and onerous disease, almost as if they are sticking the needle in their own arms. The family should seek help for themselves apart from caring for the addict in their midst. I highly recommend considering Al Anon and/or Debtors Anonymous.Consider ways to protect yourself from the ruinous chaos that the addict inflicts upon your family, allowing the addict to experience the consequences of their own decisions.

Justin attends Debtors Anonymous not because he has a debt problem, but because he won't spend. He would hoard his money out of fear that he might not be able to control his finances.  His refusal to spend money often left him living without bare necessities.  Justin spent years living in a 200 square-foot apartment with bad ventilation only because it was the least costly place to live he could find.  But his fear might have been justified, as while on an overseas business trip he ran up a hotel phone bill of more than ten thousand dollars!  While attending meetings in another recovery fellowship, friends suggested DA as a means to help him understand money and proper budgeting.

It's an issue that we often face when coaching our clients. Spending, debt, and money shame is something many private practice owners face. Adding this topic to the series may seem a little counter-intuitive. But losing grasp on your financial management can happen to any of us whether it be from a crisis that arose or from sticking our head in the sand about the financial decisions we need to face in our daily lives. Mallory Grimste, LCSW shares her experience with debt, spending and variable income in private practice.

From the time he was young, Rennie Gabriel was struggling with how to handle money effectively. It was definitely not taught in schools and the CPAs he approached certainly did not have personal budgeting information that they could teach. When he got deeper in debt even though he made more money, it finally dawned on him that more money was not going to solve a problem of mismanagement. He began to model what works and started hanging around with people who had the attitudes he needed to adopt. Rennie started copying what the wealthy did and started understanding the attitudes that wealthy people operated by. That’s what led him to start a program called Debtors Anonymous, a twelve-step program for people who can't handle money to find mental, emotional, and psychological support from other people who’ve been through the same things. Join me for part two of my conversation with Joan Sotkin, host of the Property Show podcast. In this episode, we continue the conversation on a wide array of topics; particularly the aftermath of the 2016 election, and how we can move forward. We talk politics, religion, consciousness, meditation, prosperity, and so much more. And be sure not to miss part one!   Joan’s bio: For the past 30 years, I have been examining alternative ways of dealing with life on many different levels. Defining success as merely making a lot of money and having social or career status has never made sense to me. As a result, I have been looking for something deeper and more meaningful and learning to integrate what I discover into my business and personal life. Prosperity Place is my humble contribution to those of you who, like myself, want to experience the “more” of life while creating satisfying and prosperous lives. I don’t believe that it is possible to separate career and/or business development from personal growth because who we are expresses itself through whatever we do. What you will find on these pages is the result of my search for physical, emotional, spiritual and financial comfort. I don’t pretend to have all the answers. What I do have is a series of learning experiences, the essence of which I like to share with people like you. In the early 1980s, while attending 12-step programs including Debtors Anonymous and Codependents Anonymous, I began to understand the connection between emotions and the life stories we create for ourselves, including our finances. Years of working to release my own repressed emotions helped deepen my understanding of how we act out family-of-origin issues through our businesses and finances. I love working with forward-thinking individuals who are willing to implement new ways of being with themselves and their commercial ventures. As I continue to learn and grow, my passion is sharing with others and helping them find both peace of mind and prosperity. Santa Fe, New Mexico, where I live, with its expansive skies, friendly people, and abundance of healers provides me with the comfort and peace I have always craved. Thanks to the Internet, which I have been using since 1995, I can live in this wonderful town with my precious dog, Angel, and reach out to clients around the world. Every afternoon, Angel and I walk at our fabulous dog park that has one-mile-long trails with a full view of the city. I offer an open invitation to anyone who wants to meet me at the park and walk with us! The Think Outside the Lines podcast returns this week with an all-new episode featuring Joan Sotkin, host of the Property Show podcast. In her first appearance earlier this year, we discussed all things money, and if you haven’t heard it yet, I strongly recommend you go back and check it out. In this episode, we touch upon a wide array of other topics; particularly the aftermath of the 2016 election, and how we can move forward. We talk politics, religion, consciousness, meditation, prosperity, and so much more. And because there is so much to digest, Ive divided this episode into two parts. This woman has lived so much life, and offers such incredible perspective. I promise you will find many gems in these conversations. It’s time to think outside the lines, again, with Joan Sotkin.
