AROKX is a pure product of the NZ scene. Proving that if electronic music is meant for you it will find you. While his childhood friends were listening to gangsta rap/hip hop the sounds of deep melodic Techno were calling from the subterranean of Auckland. A spiritual calling to Shipwrecked festival resulted in a residency on the BOAT stage in 2015.Catching the eyes and ears of international promoters with his raw talent a jaunt to Melbourne was called for, Supporting HNQO / Hot Creations. After laying down a truly good closing set, Arokx was launched around the circuit in Melbourne performing @ hotspots such as Circus Sundays, Killing Time, Revolver, Rainbow Serpent Festival, Pelican Villa, Rubix Warehouse, 3Fold Radio KISSFM and the very first few Breakfast Club events to name a few.Getting booked for many other festivals & bush doofs, playing alongside his favourite producers and ending up getting on it with Kevin Spacey as well as staying at Ned Kelly's family home in Talbot...This honestly was a lot to handle for lil Arokx from Maraetai Beach. Advice from friends about Melbournes vortex and traps around the circuit was given but inevitably it got him a good one.Now with his head back on track after going deep within himself in the Northland bush production bunker underneath the stars to come back to his true self, Arokx saw his music production as literally the only way forward. Now a firm fixture on the NZ Scene and releasing his own music on record labels SUN EXPLOSION (Berlin), CULTRUN CULT (Chile/NZ), FAFO RECORDS (SYD). Arokx is somewhat getting started, now showing us his production on stage with his original tracks sitting nicely beside artists such as Antix/ Out of sorts, Maxi Basshead (hoodat), Tom Baker and others. This is one act that will keep you engaged until the very end, giving the audience a whole new world of sound & vibration to be immersed in.https://soundcloud.com/arokx
This week we are excited to welcome to the show, Tom Evans & Jacob Malmo - The Journey! After the best part of a decade first learning and then sculpting Australia's house and techno scene, Jacob & Tom decided to pool their creative talents and energies together to form something even greater…The Journey. Their original and outstanding productions in the studio certainly haven't gone unnoticed with chart topping hits such as ‘Secrets' and ‘Chasing' where they teamed up with fellow Australian producer Stace Cadet. They have also experienced international success with releases on well respected Berlin based labels including Stil vor Talent, Ritual Records, Einmusika Recordings and Poesi Musik. The pair also happen to be the head honchos and curators of UGENIUS Music and Valiant Records where they pass on their emotive production qualities, signing some of the most impressive local and offshore producers in their sphere. But it's behind the booth where The Journey shines brightest, having dominated stages at the famous Rainbow Serpent Festival, Pitch, Subsonic and Strawberry Fields to name a few. Internationally, the pair cemented two solid tours in 2018 and 2019 throughout Europe from Vienna to Amsterdam, Romania to Switzerland and an enviable 8 hour set in Berlin at the famous Sisyphos. It's only fitting that as Melbourne returns to freedom, we crack open a couple of cold VB's with the boys and hear all about their ‘Journey' (pun intended!)ENJOY!!!

Since his debut, Jed has gone on to play at some of Melbourne's most frequented venues, recently locking in a residency at Revolver Upstairs, whilst being a core member of Melbourne Dance Music Academy & Red Moon tribes. Through these avenues, Jed has hosted and supported some of our scene's biggest artists in Grouch, Perfect Stranger, Breger & Dekel to name a few. In 2019, he launched his baby SixthSense into the stratosphere, an event label focused on progressive, psychedelic, intelligent sounds with out of the box, immersive art technologies. Jed's love for the psychedelic, chakra aligning, swank-tech is evident in each set this dude plays, whilst being versatile as ever through track selections within this niche soundscape. The last 12 months have been massive for Jedidiah, with a release on Electric Power Pole Records, festival appearances at Rainbow Serpent Festival, Babylon Festival & Elysium Gathering, and running some of Melbourne's trademark underground events. With a strive for providing the best immersive experience for a dance-floor punter, you can be rest assured that the goods will be served up wherever his presence lies. If you’ve discovered my work through this show and you want to know more about the Life is a Festival philosophy and how I met so many fascinating people to interview (or if you just want to hear some silly stories on my birthday) this is the podcast for you! My dear friend David Colón used to have the most delightful weekly radio program on FCC Free Radio called Behind The Mynd. It was a celebration of San Francisco’s local musicians, artists, and creative humans. Every November I would come on the show to review my year. On this episode I had just returned from my biggest festival run as Creative Director of Fest300, Chip Conley’s guide to the world’s best festivals. This was truly the peak of that special chapter in my life and I’m so happy to share it with you now. I’ve offered a lot of my perspectives on the podcast lately, including my morning ritual and my musings on whether life is still a festival in this time of crisis, so why share this now? Well, it’s my good god dang birthday! And I wanted to offer a whiff of nostalgia for a more playful time, a time when we still gathered and when our bungler-in-chief had yet to squeak his way into office. On the program we talk about surrendering to psytrance at Boom Festival Official in Portugal, how to stop showing off at Rainbow Serpent Festival in Australia, why you shouldn’t try iboga in an Airbnb in suburban Cape Town, and finally, how to be “anally dearmored.” The show is filled with jokes, adventure, songs, surprise callers, and the foundational ideas of Life is a Festival. Enjoy!

Do you know what to do if a friend or a stranger is having a difficult psychedelic experience? Sometimes called a “bad trip,” these challenging journeys can actually be catalysts for healing and personal transformation. The key is to keep them safe and trust their inner healer. Sounds simple right? In fact, it’s a profound art, which requires specialized training and can be incredibly personally rewarding. In this episode, I speak with Zendo Project Director Sara Gael. The Zendo Project is a part of MAPS (the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) that creates a safe space within festivals and similar gatherings for people having difficult psychedelic experiences. “Trip sitting,” as it is sometimes called, is a specific kind of peer support that follows four key principles: 1. Create a Safe Space 2. Sitting, Not Guiding 3. Talk Through, Not Down 4. Difficult is Not the Same as Bad On the show, we talk through each principle in detail. We also discuss the differences between trip sitting and psychedelic therapy, the state of the psychedelic renaissance, and how to create a community around compassionate care. Sara has been working with MAPS to coordinate psychedelic harm reduction since 2012. She also supports the MAPS clinical trials of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD in Boulder, and spent two years working as a Ketamine-assisted psychotherapist at the Boulder Integrative Psychiatric Healing Center. Sara maintains a private practice as a psychotherapist specializing in trauma, integration, and non-ordinary states of consciousness. You can be a safe container for someone having a difficult psychedelic experience, you just need to learn how to make yourself empty. Forging a successful career as a DJ, event organiser and producer, Gavin is a pioneering force in the Melbourne scene and has performed in all corners of the globe. Today's show was recorded live at Rainbow Serpent Festival in January this year. The video is available to watch on Rainbow's YouTube channel. We're hoping to do a second part to this panel at Rainbow Serpent Festival in 2020 and focus deeper on current issues, but always with context to the broader story.Subscribe to our podcast, follow us on Facebook and Twitter and get in contact with us if you have something to share. Sorry for this cheesy intro. I was tired and getting a little too sensual with the microphone. Our topic was Australian Festivals and the Culture Wars. A topic familiar to regular listeners of this show. Our focus on this show is drug policy. We talk about policy in a broad sense: Our laws, social conventions, education, justice system and so on.Underneath this all is the reality of human lives. And for as long as there has been humanity, there has been a quest to explore new frontiers. But, there is always also a wondering, a pondering. How far is too far? Which paths should be less tread? And, in response, some choose to quest anyway, wondering whether what is said to be, really is?
Rainbow Serpent Festival 2019 Safe & Sustainable Partying - DanceWize FeaturingMelissa DentSteph TzanetisNick KentLinda Cowan DanceWize (formerly RaveSafe) is celebrating 20 years of being a government-funded, peer-based harm reduction service. With grassroots origins beginning in 1995 as ‘RaveSafe’, we’ll share the story of DanceWize/RaveSafe with you, including the inspiration for the original ‘RaveSafe’ name being from a video made for rave VJs and filled with messages about safe sex and other harm reduction themes. Our team members, original members and new, come from a wide variety of backgrounds and will share with you some of their work in the event harm reduction space from the 1990s to date. DanceWize uses a peer education model to reduce alcohol and other drug (AOD) related harm at Victorian music events and festivals. Over the past two decades of operation, hundreds of volunteers have attended hundreds of events; providing harm reduction education and care for thousands of Victorians to reduce the risks associated with the music scene.

D-Nox is an internationally renowned performer, respected by DJs, and clubbers alike for his highly creative, and innovative sets. The style of his DJ sets varies through progressive and tech house while incorporating aspects of techno, and trance. Aside from DJing, D-Nox is head of the Sprout and Plastik Park record labels with many of these releases finding their way into the playlists of top-class DJs, such as John Digweed, and Pete Tong, amongst many others. And then of course who can forget his work alongside Frank Beckers, under their D-Nox & Beckers moniker, a name that is synonymous with many of the scene’s classic tracks. The German will be in Australia in the coming weeks for the Enchanted Gardens party in Melbourne, which follows a highly-talked about set at the past Rainbow Serpent Festival. It’s been a long time coming, but we finally have D-Nox on board for a Balance Selections mix… Interview and tracklist: www.balancemusic.com.au

Nakadia - recorded on Sunday night at the Market stage, Rainbow Serpent Festival 2019
Those who have been in and around the dance music scene for any given amount of time, have definitely come across the name of Kasey Taylor. Not only did he compile the second Balance Series compilation, but to date, his career resume is an impressive read, ticking off gigs and residencies at almost every big show and club in his native Melbourne, before he moved to Portugal for a ten-year stint which included shows across the globe. Now in his 32nd year of DJing, Kasey’s career began in earnest in 1996 when he managed to impress John Digweed during a warm-up set leading him to invite Kasey to play at his monthly Bedrock night at Heaven in London. For over two decades Kasey has had the luxury of releasing music on his label ‘Vapour Recordings’, which is 150 releases deep. In 2004 Kasey started eVapour8, the first release going on to become number 1 on the Beatport Techno charts for eight weeks and number 1 on the main charts for a month. After taking some personal time away from the scene and a four-year break from running Vapour Recordings, the label has just been rebranded along with a new website which will be relaunched around mid-2019. As if he isn’t busy enough, after moving to Australia in 2013 he started a new label Lo-Fi 45, and it is already showing signs of treading the same successful path of his previous imprints. The label has a focus on new and exciting talent, which sees Taylor taking on more of a mentor role too, by signing promising locals like Lask and Peruw, seeing them sit alongside productions from seasoned producers like Jamie Stevens and Kasey himself. Kasey is currently in the studio whipping up lots of new releases for Vapour Recordings and remixes for Lo-Fi-45. Watch out for new material which should be released very soon. Kasey’s Vapourized podcast will also be back in 2019 with a rebrand and fresh new look. At Rainbow Serpent festival this year Kasey was booked to play on the Market Stage to an appreciative crowd of thousands. If you missed the set or would like to relive the moment, sit back and press play, we have the full two-hour recording for your entertainment. It was not only a special set for the many who witnessed it, but it was also a watershed moment for Kasey himself: ‘My podcast for Balance is my recent set from Rainbow Serpent Festival. It’s been a while since I played on Market Stage and it was awesome of Rainbow Serpent to give me a cracker time to announce my comeback after a break for 2/3 years for personal reasons. I put a lot of love and threw everything at this one and it was a bit different to what people expected I think, in a good way. It was a fantastic afternoon and the reception was incredible and I cant thank everyone enough who was there in support.’ Interview: https://www.balancemusic.com.au/podcast/balance-selections-087-kasey-taylor-live-at-rainbow-serpent-festival-2019/ Soundcloud: @kaseytaylor Facebook: www.facebook.com/kaseytaylorvapourrecords Instagram: www.instagram.com/kaseytaylor

We finish the year with a thumping techno mix from one of the rising stars of Melbourne’s thriving melodic techno scene. The Scottish-born Mha Iri has been turning heads with her uncompromising brand of techno which has seen her become a resident and regular at some of the city's best clubs and nights. 2018 could easily be seen as her breakout year, and next year is set to be even bigger with festival bookings including Rainbow Serpent Festival, Where The Wild Things Are and Babylon Festival. On the production front, she is releasing at a rapid pace with releases on niche, scene labels like Six Recordings and Australian-based Recovery Collective. Exorcise your 2018 demons with this head-banging mix of big, melodic and warehouse-sized techno. The Palomaesque is a Mezcal-based cocktail. Mezcal is not simply an alcoholic beverage among many others, Mezcal is Mexico’s spirit and endowed with nearly magical powers. As consuming Meczal is a social act, so is listening to Tara Brooks’ hypnotizing sets. Whether playing at an intimate club, a packed festival or a magical sunrise deep in the Playa, Tara Brooks music envelopes the crowd. What started as a hobby in Houston’s rave scene of the 90s developed to an impressive career. Tara’s bookings have taken her all over. She is a resident at Desert Hearts, a festival in Southern California. Tara also graced the decks of Citifox LA, the BPM Festival, the famous Robot Heart bus at Burning Man. In her Hometown Los Angeles, she is a resident at Subtract Music and every so often, Tara heads to international festival such as the Rainbow Serpent Festival in Australia most recently. The latest studio work includes releases and mixes on the likes of Akbal Music, Kindisch, Einmusika Recordings, Exotic Refreshment, Balance Series, John Digweed's Transitions as well as Deep House Amsterdam and Electronic Groove. It was one of her early Robot Heart sets when Tara worked her magic on us. In her Palomaesque interpretation she went groovier and more soulful than usual, always featuring that unique Tara touch: deep driving grooves, hypnotic rhythms and haunting melodies. What a treat! 'In deep space. Abandoned. Many crew? Negative.' That is the immortal line from the huge Space Manouevres anthem 'Stage One', an exemplary piece of production which arguably defined the late-90's and early-00's progressive house scene. John Graham played an integral part in that era, not only through the Quivver handle (check 'She Does'), but through monikers like the Space Manouevers, Skanna, Stoneproof and Tilt (from 93 - 2002). You might be even more blown away to learn about his work in Hollywood as a movie scorer: 'The Taking of Pelham 123', Twelve' and 'Shrek Forever After (2010); plus recorded music for video game trailers such as 'Transformers', The Call of Duty' series and 'Batman: Arkham City Riddler'. His credentials speak for itself, and of late a whole new generation is opening itself up to Graham's talent. Last year he became Beatport's third-highest selling progressive artist with 'Mumbo Jumbo' (it also went on to find itself in Beatport͛'s Top 10 best-selling progressive tracks at the end of that year). Released on Bedrock, it also became the label's number one selling single of 2017. His new imprint, Controlled Substance, just celebrated it's debut release with new Quivver track 'Hype', which is certainly living up to its name: 'Controlled Substance is already ranked 88th in the top progressive label on Beatport, after just one release - so it’s pretty hard to be disappointed with that.' And it's not hard to see why the label is charging to the front, 'Hype' is an impressive piece of production. With the news that Quivver will be doing the coveted closing set at the Rainbow Serpent Festival on his upcoming Australian visit, this mix should serve a the perfect primer of what to expect. This is deep, dark and driving in equal spades. There can be no doubt that Third Son is a name swiftly becoming more recognisable on global dancefloors. His mixture of deep, brooding melodies and tight, techno productions are starting to find favour amongst many - and his laser-precision DJ sets are in high demand. Joseph Thomas Price comes from good stock, a musical family based in London who trained him as a musician from a young age. As a teenager he developed a taste for jazz before being seduced by rock music, before Radiohead’s ‘Kid A’ really showed him the potential of electronic music. (‘That blurring of electronic and rock music was a real revelation for me at the time’) This healthy appetite for all shades of music has developed a sound which has piqued global interest, and he is already traveling the world as a full-time DJ only one year after the conception of the Third Son project. Price’s moody techno can also be found on scene labels like Noir, Einmusika and Syncopate - not to mention his own Polymath imprint. With an EP coming out on Gardens of God's label, Sodai, and Dense and Pika's Kneaded Pains imprint, it stands to reason that interest will only skyrocket more. Price will be heading to Australia to play at the Rainbow Serpent Festival alongside shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Launceston (check dates below). Ahead of his arrival the producer has taken the time to compile the 60th edition of our Balance Selections podcast series: expect deep heat from start to finish. What´s your favorite place? And where did you have the greatest partys? A: It´s hard to choose one country but I am definitly in love with Australia and Switzerland. To be part of the Rainbow Serpent Festival down under was one of my best experiences of my DJ career. Q: Obviously 90% of your music releases appear on Stil Vor Talent. What´s your special relation to this label? A: Since I've been part of it for close to 10 years now, the label has become a family to me and many of the artists are good friends to me, which shouldn't be taken for granted in these fast-paced, globalized times. Q: Are there any news you want to tell us – what´s coming up this summer? A: Beside our Stil vor Talent Festivals during the summer, I'm really looking forward to my first gig at Melt Festival this July. New music will be released in late August on Stil vor Talent, as well.

Australian DJ /producer Uone is the next guest to step up for a Balance Selections podcast. Known for his fun and energetic DJ sets, Uone has become a regular on lineups for some of the more upfront global festivals and events. With a sound that initially drew on elements from all genres of the electronic sphere, he has now found his niche in producing and playing deep, chunky and twisted tech house - and it is with this resolve that he has managed to carve out a name for himself on the international circuit. Raised in Melbourne’s Peninsula Coast, demand for Uone's sets has truly transgressed the borders of Australia with invites to play at Burning Man (Nevada), Fusion (Berlin), Glade (UK), Universo Paraleo (BR), Boom (Portugal), Ozora (HU), Eclipse (AUS), and more recently, the Rainbow Serpent Festival in Australia. He will be returning to Europe and the United States for a string of events over the Northern Hemisphere summer which includes Burning Man in the United States, the Secret Garden Party in the United Kingdom, and the Heinz Label Night in Berlin. Production-wise, Uone has released a steady stream of dance floor weapons which has led to him being signed with Beef Records and Chameleon Recordings, and his array of deep house and techno tracks has found a home on labels like Katermukke, Heinz, Light My Fire and Tonkind Records. As Uone celebrates his 15th year of Dj-ing, he delivers a mix that is filled with audible nostalgia as he opts for orchestral melodies and percussive blends that signal to the old and new. Watch out for tracks and remixes from a diverse group of artists like Tube & Berger, Loco Dice, Maya Jane Coles, and of course Uone himself – all bookended by a special Balance Intro and Outro which Uone has produced exclusively for this podcast.
