In 1963, Capitol Records considered the Beatles “a band who looked and sounded weird with an odd name and no leader” and refused to release their records in America, despite being owned by EMI. As author Andrew Cook points out, “the truth is stranger than fiction”. New correspondence unearthed in his fascinating Capitol Gains maps out the tortuous wranglings of the deal-makers and “pantomime bad guys” behind the greatest and most successful marketing hype in history, all jockeying to take credit and manage their reputations. Some highlights here … … the truth behind Epstein's mythical phone calls … “the more successful the Beatles were, the more Capitol were proving themselves wrong” … why 1966 was the band's “Last Supper” … “from the Battle of Hastings to World War 2 to the Beatles ... it's the winners who rewrite history” … the American 12-track rule and how they repackaged product “to give it more grab” … the Beatles' commercial fate if they'd never been successful in the States … the pitiful (standard) original EMI deal – “18.75 of a penny per group member for every album” … the “Butcher sleeve”: how 750,000 were printed and the fortune lost in “Operation Retrieve”. And the Capitol exec whose kids made $1.5m from copies stashed in his garage … how Epstein was contracted to make 25 per cent of all Beatles monies ‘til 1975 … Bob Dylan's tangential role in the signing of the Beatles to Capitol … and the “cowboy film” that nearly happened. “I'll just wake up one day and say to myself that'll do me,” was the reply given by Greg Ryan when quizzed about a likely retirement date on a podcast posted on October 27th 2020.  He was then 54 years old and still riding in races. The winners were flowing and so were the opportunities from a wide range of prominent stables. That fateful day was to arrive just six weeks later. Greg was booked for six rides at a Mudgee meeting on Friday December 4th, including three for Sydney trainer Bjorn Baker. As he drove away from his Dubbo home for the 126km trip to Mudgee, not even wife Pauline knew this was to be her husband's final day as a professional jockey. The punter's favourite had to settle for a fourth and a third on his first two mounts, but was quietly chuffed when he came from well back to win a 1200m maiden on Without Shame for longtime supporter Sue Grills. His final three rides all finished out of a place, and still he hadn't breathed a word to anybody about his impending retirement. The fact that he hadn't taken a ride beyond the Mudgee meeting should have aroused suspicion. Perhaps people thought he'd been suspended or was simply taking a short break.  Inevitably it wasn't long before participants and punters alike were all asking the same question- where the hell is Greg Ryan?” Greg Ryan had retired, that's where the hell he was!- no bells and whistles, no fuss, no elaborate farewells. Despite self confessed withdrawal symptoms, the jockey with the second largest win tally in Australian racing history has stayed retired. He's about 12 kilograms heavier than he was in riding days, but quietly chuffed that he still doesn't carry an ounce of fat on that wiry frame- the direct result of an ongoing work schedule, and regular activity.  Greg had begun assisting son Isaac in his growing Dubbo tree services business, even before calling time on his riding career. He continues to work full time with Isaac and valued staff member Andrew Cook, although he's currently threatening to scale back, as his 60th birthday approaches. I've had several emails in the last six months about Greg Ryan's current whereabouts and lifestyle. I recall the earthy way in which he shared his story in that 2020 podcast, and I'd love to give it another run. If you missed it last time I know you'll enjoy the reminiscences of a former automotive mechanic who rode 4,035 winners and 5,825 place getters in a career that was very late getting started. During the podcast Greg makes loving reference to grandmother Betsy who was still going strong at age 94.The remarkable veteran, a classic example of the stoic and hard working women of her generation, had turned 98 shortly before her recent passing. For Greg Ryan fans this is a comprehensive summary of the career of a legendary country jockey.

Dr. QuinnCast: The Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman Podcast

Kelly and Mark discuss this unforgettable episode. We Hope you enjoy it!  In “A Place to Die,” the twelfth episode of Season 5 of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Dr. Michaela Quinn faces a crisis when a mysterious staph infection spreads through her clinic, causing the deaths of several patients. The episode begins with Franklin, a railroad station worker, dying from the infection after treatment for a splinter, followed by Mr. Jacobs, who succumbs after a hernia operation. Dorothy Jennings, treated for a minor cough, also falls gravely ill but survives. As fear grips Colorado Springs, townspeople avoid the clinic, suspecting it as the source of the outbreak. Dr. Mike, with help from Sully, Colleen, and Dr. Andrew Cook, investigates and traces the infection to contaminated items within the clinic, particularly the linens, after Mrs. Yung contracts it while cleaning sheets. Faced with no other solution, Dr. Mike makes the heart-wrenching decision to burn all the clinic's contents, including her books and diplomas, and fumigates the building with sulfur to sterilize it. Though the town remains wary, Sully's successful treatment for stitches begins to restore trust in Dr. Mike. Meanwhile, the episode explores the growing romance between Colleen, home from college, and Andrew, adding a lighter subplot amidst the medical drama. The story highlights Dr. Mike's resilience and the community's struggle with fear and loss in the face of an invisible threat. Director: Alan J. He shares the inspiring recovery story of Ryland Roach, who underwent brain surgery prior to the 2023 season, then discusses the instrumental players on the team, including Andrew Cook in goal and Matthew Mannarino on offense. He emphasizes the importance of balancing player and life development and shares his expectations for the season. For the second half of the episode, the Haverford School (Pa.) coach Brendan Dawson joins to discuss the importance of senior leadership and the team's focus on the process of improvement. Dawson also discusses the challenging schedule and the way that some of the 2023 season unfolded. Zooming in on the 2024 Fords, he emphasizes the strength of the midfield group with players like Conner Nolen, Jack Long and William Burfeind, as well the impact that future Navy Midshipman Aydan DiRocco has on the offense. The Northern Agenda

It's local elections day which means plenty of town hall drama to digest - including a new mayor in Middlesbrough and closely-fought contests across the North. But what does it all mean for the balance of power in our region - and were people even able to vote at all due to the new ID rules brought in by the Government. Northern Agenda Editor Rob Parsons digests what we know so far with Zoe Billingham, director of the IPPR North think-tank. *** And Rob interviews journalist and author Bernard Ginns about his new book detailing one of the most vicious corporate battles in recent years involving a maverick Northern industrialist, Andrew Cook, as he tried to find off the powerful financial institutions that wanted to take over his company. *** The Northern Agenda is a Laudable production for Reach. It is presented by Rob Parsons, and produced by Daniel J. McLaughlin. Exodus 38 revealed the testimony of our faith: when people look at our lives, they should see a story of our faithfulness to pursue bearing God's image and His faithfulness to fulfill His reconciliation promise. This week, guest preacher, Andrew Cook shares with us how Exodus 39 keeps this testimonial language going in light of discipleship. Exodus 39 shows us that discipleship is a rhythm of reminding us where we came from and pointing us forward to the hope we have in Jesus Christ.

We have just arrived in France after a 10 hour journey in 34 degree heat! Wow, was that intense! We're now getting into our work routine but because we've been journeying, I have to squeeze my clients into one day, so can't record a new episode this week. Instead, I'm reshaping an old episode which is literally providing you with my step-by-step protocol for endometriosis management and healing. I've developed this approach after spending seven years working with the endo community and on my own healing journey, and studying with leading specialists such as Dr Jessica Drummond and Dr Allison Siebecker. I hope by sharing some of my core steps, it'll help you navigate your own healing journey and give you a foundation on which to build your own plan. It's the 100th episode! To celebrate I'm sharing the foundation steps I take with my clients to create their personalised holistic healing plan for endometriosis. In this episode I share some of my main areas of focus when creating an endo healing plan: Nutrition for endometriosis - ant-inflammatory eating, foods for hormones and blood sugar Gut healing - removing trigger foods, getting to the root problem and gut recovery Restoration - optimising sleep, managing stress and recovering from HPA axis dysfunction Detoxification pathways - hydrate, heal gut, remove toxins Structural support - visceral manipulation, pelvic floor physiotherapy, good surgery Cycle syncing - tracking with Fertility Awareness Method, eating for the different phases and syncing your life and movement Supplements - when to use supplements shown to target endometriosis, period pain and inflammation Remember, everyone is different and your healing has to tailored to you - your life, your body and your needs. Take from this what feels right for you in this moment and don't worry about the rest! This week, I've been joined by Andrew Cook: chief development and commercial officer at Repton, a co-educational independent boarding school for pupils aged 3 to 18 whose history stretches back more than 450 years. I previously spoke to Andrew in the summer of 2020 about generating commercial income for schools. In this episode Andrew and I explore the subject of broadening the fundraising mix. We begin by discussing Andrew's inspirations for making the move into the independent school sector and how his experience of attending an independent school on a bursary has driven him to utilise his professional experience to create opportunities for others. We then explore what led Andrew to diversify the income streams and broaden the fundraising mix at Repton beyond the traditional fundraising we see in independent schools. We discuss two different sources of fundraising:Firstly, I ask Andrew about his experience with events fundraising, including the time and budget events take, how they tap into the competitive nature of independent schools, the benefits of these events beyond just fundraising income and the effects of COVID on events.Secondly, we discuss how institutional or corporate fundraising is under-utilised in the independent schools sector. We explore how overcoming objections from institutions about donating to the independent school sector and developing an inspirational and comprehensive case for support is key.Episode HighlightsIntroducing Andrew Cook (03:51)What inspired Andrew to make the move into the independent school sector (04:36)What led Andrew to diversify income streams (07:00)Events fundraising (08:37)Institutional or corporate fundraising (20:40)004: The outlook for commercial income with Andrew Cook, Repton SchoolDownload your copy of the free eBook ‘The Strategic Independent School Leader' at www.consultjuliet.co.uk/ebook Catch up on previous episodes at www.consultjuliet.co.uk/podcastThank you so much for listening to The Independent School Podcast. The Independent School Podcast with Juliet Corbett

In this episode, I explore how two of my passions can be combined: strategy and the importance of focusing your resources on the things that will make a difference, and bursary provision within independent schools and the way that it can impact on social mobility. I consider the questions that you need to ask and the options you have going forward as you craft your bursary strategy.I begin by defining what I mean by bursaries and bursary strategies. I outline the differences between a bursary and a scholarship, and note the increasing shift towards means-tested bursaries in the UK and a subsequent shift towards fundraising campaigns and away from capital campaigns. After defining bursaries, I look at the how the 'four building blocks of strategy' can help structure your thinking around strategy. I look at the strategic choices you need to make as you define your big picture, long term vision for bursaries in your school. I outline possible accelerators and sticking points: internal strengths and weakness and external opportunities and threats. I look at how you can identify the general approach to overcoming the sticking points and, finally, I reinforce the importance of an action plan. I first met Andrew through CodeNewbie chats on Wednesday nights—my favorite night of the week—and we got to chatting about his work. I was really fascinated by a few aspects of his story. First, he had made this career transition from the medical industry to software development. I'm always interested to hear someone's story when they make a big jump like that! But on top of that, a consistent theme kept coming up in Andrew's story—and that theme was projects. Andrew's true passion, as he'll tell you, is in cloud computing. When he began building his skills for his first job in web development, he still working as a paramedic. During this time, Andrew began building projects to provide a publicly visible application of what he was learning.
